  • My wife sent me packing, says man

•‘He said he won’t allow a woman control him’

A 32-year-old woman, Folashade Olaleye has prayed the Alakuko Customary Court in Lagos, to dissolve her 12-year-old marriage.

She is seeking to part ways with her husband Sunday Olaleye, who she accused of deriving pleasure from cursing her.

She said they have been quarrelling since they started living as a couple.

Mrs Olaleye, a trader said a day was never complete without a disagreement.

She said: “His mother has been against our marriage from the outset. I couldn’t back out because I was pregnant. None of his relations attended our child’s dedication but his mother came to assist me after our first child’s birth. As I speak, I don’t relate with any of his relations.

“My husband knows the nature of my business; occasionally, I travel out of the country for three to four days and he always complains each time I return despite using the money to cater for our children’s needs. I once advised him to join me in the business because I have a friend whose husband monitors her shop each time we travel. Instead, my husband said he wouldn’t allow a woman to control his movement. I was sad.

“Since he left home last October, he comes to my place every morning and night to rain curses on me in the presence of our children. I will take care of our children. He is free to visit them whenever he pleases. I don’t need him in my life anymore besides it’s been a year since we slept with each other,” she said.

Olaleye, a 36-year-old motorcyclist, in his defence told the court: “Yes, we disagree a lot and she rains curses on my folks too. It is also true my mother came to nurse our first child but she stopped coming because of my wife’s attitude. On several occasions, both families have advised us on how to reconcile our conflict but my wife never worked on her flaws. I stopped taking alcoholic drinks and smoking because of her. I tried so many ways to let peace reign but instead, she would shout at me asking me to give her a breathing space. She never asked me to join her business.

“She doesn’t have time for our children. She attends more than four social gatherings in a week. In fact, she is footloose and adulterous because I hear a lot of things from neighbours and I once caught her in company of a man at the junction where I work. I did not leave the house willingly. My wife sent me away. Whenever I returned a bit late from work, she sends me back. My clothes are still in her place because I couldn’t take anything when she sent me away. The last time we slept with each other was four months ago and not a year as she claims. I still love her because of our children if not, dissolution is best for us.”

    The marriage produced three children.

The court’s President, Chief Awos Awosola, asked Olaleye to pack his clothes at the petitioner’s house and adjourned the case till March 12.

  • Court discharges suspected kidnapper

Chief Magistrate A.O Komolafe sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has struck out a kidnap charge preferred against Adebayo Orekoya for lack of dilligent prosecution.

Orekoya was arraigned last June 30 for allegedly attempting to kidnap a Lagos socialite, Adelekan Victor, popularly known as “Ade Lexus”.

The police alleged that Orekoya conspired with other persons at large and attempted to kidnap Victor.

The police alleged that Orekoya last May 10 persistently followed Victor from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital to Pekas Club on Allen Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos with the intent to kidnap him.

The charge reads: “That you Adebayo Orekoya and others already charged to Magistrate’s Court 2, Ikeja in Charge No. MIK/B/132/2014 on May 10, 2014 at about 23:30hrs at Pekas Club Allen Avenue, in the Lagos Magisterial District did attempt to kidnap one Ade Victor by persistently following him from Ibadan in Oyo State to Pekas Club, Allen Avenue, Lagos in an attempt to kidnap him.”

The offence, according to the police, is punishable under Sections 271 and 410 of the criminal laws of Lagos State 2011.

    Orekoya pleaded not guilty.

Despite several adjournments, the police failed to produce witnesses, the Investigating Police Officer, (IPO) also failed to appear in court.

Discharging the defendant last Thursday, Chief Magistrate Komolafe said it was clear the police were not ready to prosecute the case.

Defendant’s counsel Terry Badmus told reporters that the court’s decision justified his claim that the police cooked up the charge against his client.

He said he would file a suit against the police for malicious prosecution.

  • Youth leader injured in crash

    Youth leader injured in crash

Lagos State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Chairman Comrade Taofeek Gbadebo was injured in an accident on Isiwu-Ikorodu Road last Thursday night.

An 18-seater bus heading towards Epe hit Gbadebo’s car at Adamo bus stop at 8: 45 p.m.

His Mitsubishi Gallant, with number-plate NYCN 01, was damaged.

Gbadebo sustained injuries in his eyes, nose and arms.

The windscreen of his car was shattered and the driver’s door condemned.

The tyre, shock absorber and side mirrors were also affected.

The bus veered into the bush and hit a log, resulting in the shattering of the rear windscreen.

Gbadebotold The Nation that no one was injured in the bus.

“It was shocking; I can’t really say how it happened. All I know was that it was in the night. I saw the bus coming and the next thing I heard was a bang. We hit ourselves. When I saw the wreck of my car, I immediately took a bike to the nearest hospital for treatment; because I noticed that blood was oozing out of my nose, even as I experienced sharp pains in my eyes and arms,” he said.

The NYCN leader blamed the accident on the bad road.

According to him, the bus driver was trying to avoid potholes and collided with him

“There are lots of potholes on that road; it’s actually a federal road and most vehicles avoid plying the road due to the potholes. The driver was trying to do same, which led to the collision,” he said.

Asked if he is pressing for any compensation, Gbadebo said: “I am not.”

“I just thank God that no life was lost. Will I be pressing for compensation from the grave if I had died?” he asked.

  • Pastor loses N5m to fraudsters

A pastor, who allegedly intended to exchange N5million for $50million, has been duped by a five-man gang.

Three of the gang members were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command.

They are Chukwuma Anierobi, 52, Thomas Adekunle, 52 and Thomas Benz, 50.

Police said they were arrested for allegedly duping a pastor based in the Southeast of N5million, under the pretence of buying a land and erecting a structure for a foreigner at $50million.

A gang member, Ifeanyi, who is at large, brought the idea; Benz got a foreign number that was used to call the victim to ask if he was interested in the deal.

They lodged in a hotel in Ikeja and invited the Pastor. When he came, they handed him a box containing $50million dollars and he took a flight back to the East. On getting home, he realised that the dollars were photocopies. Since then, he has not been able to reach the gang.

Benz, who pretended to be London-based, said his role was to clear the money.

“I called the victim (pastor) and told him that he will collect the cargo through Air France as the clearing agent. After I informed him that his money had arrived, I went to meet him where he lodged telling him the money for clearing was N870, 000. I also said officials of Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) wanted to open the box but since I stopped them, they requested N5million and he pleaded to pay N3.5miliion.

“Pastor said he operates a joint account with his wife and asked me to prepare the papers which I did. He paid all the money we requested, carried the box and got a flight back to the East. When he opened the box, he called saying that the dollars were fake. I asked him to shut up and I switched off my phone. We all collected N700, 000 each as our share.”

Adekunle from Itaido in Ekiti State said: “I was the one he called when he opened the box. Our intention was to continue to extort money from him but the way he reacted made us end the game. I also assisted in clearing the defaced dollars with chemicals.”

Synagogue: Coroner inquest to end March

THE inquest into last September 12 Syna-gogue Church of All

Nations (SCOAN) building collapse will end next month, the Coroner, Chief Magis-trate Oyetade Komolafe said yesterday.

He, however, said the in-quest could not proceed yes-terday because of a letter from SCOAN’s counsel Ola-lekan Ojo, praying for an ad-journment.

Chief Magistrate Komo-lafe adjourned till tomorrow for cross-examination of SCOAN’s Chief Security Of-ficer (CSO) Sunday Okojie.

Lagos State government raised the inquest to unravel the cause of the building col-lapse in which 115 persons mostly from South Africa died.

In his letter, Ojo claimed that he was appearing in an-other case at the Federal High Court and appealed to the coroner to adjourn to a more convenient date for him.

Ruling, Chief Magistrate Komolafe said: “This court cannot continue indefinitely. I just want to say that I am not going to sit for more than two weeks. Anybody that will not come during that period, we will skip his or her testimony and move ahead.”

  • LUTH resident doctors protest unpaid salaries

LUTH resident doctors protest unpaid salaries

Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) yesterday staged a peaceful protest at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) over alleged unpaid salaries and management negligence.

They carried banners bearing inscriptions, such as Many sufferings of LUTH doctors, Non-payment of our salaries and Many doctors are still being owed up to seven months.

Their president Moronkola Ramon said all the doctors have not been paid.

Ramon said members who did update courses with their own money have not been refunded.

He said: “The management normally pays for the update courses, some of us went ahead to pay on our own with the hope of getting the money back from the management, but up till now they are yet to be refunded. It is quite unfortunate that Nigerians don’t know what we are passing through.

“When doctors sit in the clinics to attend to patients, it is not as though all is well; doctors are going through a lot.”

“When you come to the ward and there is no light and you see a doctor attending to patient using torchlight, he or she is exposed to so many things including Hepatitis, HIV and it takes a lot to handle such conditions with no one caring for our needs,” he added.

The situation, Ramon said, might get to a stage where members won’t be able to pay their way to works.

“The management can’t continue to run the institution with the blood of the doctors,” he said

ARD Vice president Omodara Olaniran said the doctors have been suffering in silence.

The protest, he said, was not against patients, but the management and the government.

Olatunde Olagbemi, a Senior Registrar, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) wondered why similar institutions were not having the same problem, saying their colleagues in Lagos State Government have received their December salaries.

Olagbemi said doctor’s salary is prepared by the local management which is the administrative staff of a particular institution. Even if the money is released centrally, the eventual payment is done by the management, he said.

Reacting, LUTH Medical Advisory Committee Deputy Chairman Dr Olufemi Fasanmade said the issues raised by the resident doctors were already being addressed by Accountant-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Health (FMOH).

“As we speak, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) is in Abuja to follow up on these issues. The doctors have been carried along in all these and thus the reasons for the protests are strange,” Fasanmade said.

  • Fate dealt me a cruel blow

Fate dealt me a cruel blow

He was a responsible husband and father to his children. He was humble to a fault. I am finished now. My life is empty without him. They have robbed me of my joy. Where do I start from now? I don’t know why fate dealt me a cruel blow.”

These were the words of Mrs Angelina Otomewo whose husband, Charles died in hospital two days after he was reportedly shot by some uniformed men near Ikorodu, Lagos.

The late Otomewo, 50, is survived by a widow and three children.

Last Wednesday when he and other motorists ran into the uniformed men at Majidun near Ikorodu, the late Otomewo, who was a businessman, was returning from his Fadeyi, Lagos office.

Speaking with The Nation at their Ishawo, Ikorodu residence, yesterday, Mrs Otomewo recounted the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death: “Around 9pm, I received a phone call from my husband saying “I dey Agric they don shoot me ooo”.  I was shocked but I managed to drive to Agric bus stop. When I couldn’t find him at the place, I checked the nearest hospital where I saw him receiving treatment. The following day, we got a referral letter to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-araba where we were told he will undergo surgery. About 2am on Friday, we were asked to get some pints of blood.

“I thought my best friend was going to survive. It got to a point he put off his clothes on his hospital bed because he was writhing in pains. But, on Friday evening, four hours after the surgery, he died.”

She said her husband plied Ikorodu road for over 12 years without an incident before last Wednesday’s tragic event.

“At times, I am yet to believe my joy of 17 years is really gone. We celebrated his birthday last month. He was full of joy. He kept thanking me for being a good wife. He plied that route for over 12 years. This was our first experience. I am not suspecting anyone but God knows and destiny will always prevail.”

One of the late Otomewo’s tenants, who simply identified himself as Tosin, described him as a nice person.

He said: “I have always heard some landlords are trouble to their tenants but Mr Charles was different. He made us feel at home. Since the incident, those who rented shops in the front of the house have not opened because they are still in shock. He treated every issue with utmost importance. After his family, his tenants came next. I will miss my ‘nice’ landlord.”

The army yesterday sought direction to the scene from survivor, Alhaji Aminu Salis, who is recuperating at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

He was called by one of the soldiers who visited him on Monday at the instance of General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Lagos, Major-General Tanmi Dibi.

“That you Garuba Abdulraman on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did threaten to injure one Alimat Muazu with a cutlass and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 56(1) of the Criminal law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011”.

  • Another victim dies of gun wounds

Another victim dies of gun wounds

ANOTHER person reportedly shot by uniformed men at Majidun near Ikorodu, Lagos, last week, has died, bringing to three number of casualties.

Daniel was said to have died in hospital yesterday.

One person was shot dead at the scene last Wednesday; the second died in hospital last weekend.

Yesterday, the army began a probe of the incident, promising to get to the root of it.

Two soldiers in uniform and a man in mufti were at the General Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos to see Alhaji Aminu Salis, an engineer.

Salis and his wife were among those reportedly shot by the uniformed men.

His wife has since been discharged.

Salis told The Nation that the late Daniel lived beside Oando Filling Station on Isawo Road, Ikorodu.

“One of my neighbours called this morning (yesterday) to inform me about the death of another person that was shot. He gave his name as Daniel. The late Daniel and two others are the ones we know that have lost their lives in this crazy incident. You can imagine the number of people that may have lost their lives that we don’t know yet. Many people were carrying wounds to different places after the gun shots; some moved to the direction of Ijede, some to Odogunyan, another set to Ikorodu proper,” he said.

Salis, an engineer, told The Nation that policemen who checking his vehicle wondered how he survived the gun shots.

“After carefully looking through the car, the policemen told me to thank God for still being alive. They told me that the gunmen are professional shooters. Besides that, you remember they said the bullets in my car belonged to the military,” he said.

Told that the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division in Lagos, Maj. Gen. Tanmi Dibi, said the gunmen were not soldiers, Salis asked him to send his men to collect some of the bullets from the Owode-Onirin Police Station for verification.

“We are in a modern world whereby when you see a bullet, you know where to trace it to. Let the GOC do that; that will aid their investigation,” he said.

The GOC, he said, directed his men to get first hand information on the incident, adding: “I told them how it happened and they promised to get to the root of the matter. It is a good omen for the military to have sent their men here (hospital); they have once again proven that the military institution remains disciplined and would not allow any individual or group to denigrate it,” he said.

Lagos State police spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent, yesterday said, no arrest had been made. He said the police would do all they could to unveil the gunmen.

The case, Nwosu said, has been transferred to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).
