  • ‘I’m tired of my nagging wife’

The troubles with our marriage started when I refused to sleep in my wife’s room 40 days after she was delivered of our child. I couldn’t because I knew it would be unhealthy to have fun when she wasn’t strong enough. So, I had to sleep in my first wife’s room.”

Those were the words of 62-year-old driver, Iyanda Busari, a resident of 20, Orilawe Street, Alagbado, a Lagos suburb, as he prayed the Customary Court, Alakuko, to dissolve his 17-year-old marriage to his wife, Bukola, over her “troublesome attitude.”

He told the court: “She rain curses on me and nags a lot. In fact, she is uncontrollable. My relations had to stop visiting our house because of her behaviour. The last time I slept with her was three months ago. I know she can’t turn over a new leaf. I don’t want this marriage anymore.”

However, the 45-year-old woman responded:”My husband’s first wife is the problem. She virtually complains about everything I do. Each time I complain about the woman’s attitude, my husband beats me. He doesn’t know anything about our children’s education. My husband keeps insisting they enroll in an Arabic school. “At one of the landlords’ association’s meetings, my husband said that armed robbers usually invade the neighbourhood because I sell local herbal mixtures. He sent me out of the shop I built and gave it to his wife. I leave the house every morning because it is always on ‘fire’. Since I received the summons, I stopped greeting him. He must refund the money I lent him during his mother’s burial because I am still struggling to have a means of livelihood.”

The marriage is blessed with three children.

The court’s President, Chief Awos Awosola, adjourned the matter till November 27 for further hearing.

  • Police, OPC foil robbery in Lagos

In attempt by some armed robbers to unleash terror on residents of Bode Thomas Street and its environs in the Palmgrove area of Lagos suffered a blow in the wee hours of yesterday.

The night marauders, The Nation gathered, sneaked into the street about 2.45am through the Awoyokun axis of Ikorodu Road, swooping on a building before they were dispersed.

The attempt came two months after some robbers wrote to residents of the area, threatening to “visit them soon like the coming of Jesus Christ.”

Following the notice that rattled residents, operatives from the Ilupeju Police Station promptly embarked on night patrol of the area.

“They (the robbers) came in when everyone was deep in sleep. The overpowered the two security guards on guard at both ends of the street, beat them thoroughly before gaining entry into a building. But they could not go beyond the building when help came from some neighbours and the police, following residents’ outcry for help,” a resident, who simply gave his name as Saheed, spoke with The Nation about 8am yesterday when they stood in groups discussing the incident.

“That was the first time I would witness a prompt response by the police in such a situation; they surprised us,” he added.

A member of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) in the area, who rose to the occasion with his colleagues, said: “It was about 3am. We were woken up by frightening sounds of gunshots from the axis. We mobilised and rushed down there. We gave the robbers a hot chase but they were lucky to escape. We were still around when policemen came.”

A lucky victim, who would not want his name mentioned, said one of the robbers was about assaulting him when the intervention came. “I thank God that I survived it,” he said.

A worried resident, Mrs Mariam Lawal, who pleaded with the police to sustain their patrol of the area, also urged more surveillance on the notorious Awoyokun/Ikorodu Road junction where, according to her, nightfall “brings evil and tears.”

“People avoid the spot whenever night falls, especially from 7.30pm. Some bad boys are fond of hiding there to dispossess pedestrians of money and other valuables. I have fallen victim twice. I want the police to keep an eye on the place at night to save us and others from attacks,” she said.

Following yesterday’s incident, it was gathered that elders in the community were making efforts aimed at strengthening security of lives and property in the neighbourhood.

  • Synagogue: ‘Strange aircraft’ belongs to Air Force, say police

Synagogue: ‘Strange aircraft’ belongs to Air Force, say police

•Building collapse was sabotage, church insists

The police yesterday identified the “strange aircraft” that allegedly hovered over the collapsed Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) building was a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) CH 130 Hercules.

A police witness, Olusola Agboyi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), while testifying before Coroner Oyetade Komolafe, said the aircraft, which was on a circuit training mission, flew at very low altitude.

“I recorded statements from 34 witnesses who claimed the aircraft was flying very low and had caused panic among residents of the Ikotun area,” said Agboyi.

He stated that preliminary reports suggested the foreign guest house might have caved in as a result of internal saboteurs – visitors or lodgers at the premises.

He said the saboteur, undetected, could have used explosives or chemical substances to bring down the building.

Agboyi said he interviewed one of the survivors, Taiwo Temitayo Taiwo, who claimed he heard a thunderous noise and saw lightening moments before the building came crashing.

The witness said he led the team that investigated the collapse and was also a member of the federal government’s panel.

He, however, noted that the police did not rule out the possibility of structural defect, but were yet to get a reply to the letter the agency wrote to the Lagos State Ministry of Works, requesting a test on materials used at the site.

Asked about the outcome of the federal government’s inter-agency panel, he told the court that findings were yet to be concluded.

Agboyi told the court that the Bomb Disposal Unit of the police visited the scene of the incident, but was yet to present its report.

He said after watching the CCTV footages of the incident, he was of the view that it was consistent with controlled demolitions.

“The building came down in seconds. From the analysis of experts, the collapse looked like controlled demolition. It should be subjected to the testing of experts outside the country,” Agboyi said.

  • Two sisters held for ‘smuggling’ drug to detained sibling

Two sisters held for ‘smuggling’ drug to detained sibling

For allegedly smuggling 11 wraps of Marijuana India hemp to their detained brother at the cell within Ikeja High Court in Lagos, two sisters have been arrested by the police.

The suspects, Shade Oyetobi (24) and Atinuke Adebanwo (32), allegedly committed the crime while visiting their brother, Babatunde Oyetobi at the inmates’ cell inside the court’s premises.

The suspects were apprehended by officers of the Nigerian Prison Services (NPS).

Babatunde is facing charges of assault and armed robbery before Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya.

The prison official who foiled the suspects’ plan, Mr A.R. Muhammad, said they had approached him that they wanted to see their brother.

Muhammad said Shade was holding a cellophane bag and when he queried her about its content, they told him it contained leather slippers.

He said upon his insistence that the bag should be searched, 11 wraps of marijuana and a jar of Vaseline were found there.

According to him, inmates usually insert wraps of marijuana in their anus with the aid of the Vaseline and excrete them inside the prison yard.

Shade, a hair-dresser, said one of her brother’s friends, simply identified as Jamiu, gave her the drug to deliver to him.

On her part, Adebayo, said she had three children and was the elder sister to Shade and Babatunde, adding that she used to come to court to meet her brother whenever his matter was being heard.

She, however, denied knowledge of her younger sister’s plan to smuggle the drugs to Babatunde inside the cell.

The suspects were later handed over to operatives from the Area ‘F’ Police Command for investigations and prosecution.

  • Civil defence arrests nine suspected vandals

Civil defence arrests nine suspected vandals

Nine suspected vandals and adulterators of petroleum products have been arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command.

The state commandant of the corps, Ikemefuna Donatus Izuka, said they were arrested at Amuwo Odofin in the Festac Area of Lagos with the products suspected to be stolen and adulterated.

Izuka, who spoke while the suspected were being paraded with the products at the NSCDC Command Headquarters, Alausa in Ikeja, said the products were intercepted in three trucks.

He said the development was the manifestation of part of its responsibilities – the monitoring and protection of oil installations and other critical infrastructure of the government.

The NSCDC chief decried what he termed the unwholesome practice of some economic saboteurs who are determined to cripple the nation’s economy.

He wondered why somebody would deliberately risk 21years in jail for illegal dealing on petroleum products. He, however, said the case was still under investigation, adding that immediately after concluding the investigation, the suspects would be charged to court.

Izuka admonished Lagos residents to desist from engaging in any illegal practice, adding that they should channel their energy into useful and lawful vocations that will be beneficial to them and other law-abiding Nigerians.

He enjoined the public to cooperate with the corps by giving useful information on any illegal activity being carried out in their areas for quick intervention.

  • My husband isn’t normal, wife tells court

A trader, Folake Adewale, yesterday urged the Alakuko Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve her seven-year-old marriage, alleging frequent beating and forceful sexual intercourse by her husband.

Folake (42), who resides at 26, Ogundipe Street, Alakuko, told the court: “I don’t think my husband is normal because after beating me, he comes back to his senses and tell me that he did not know he beat me. Many times, he forcefully makes love to me.

“There was a time that he returned from his village and insisted on making love to me that night and I turned down his request. I did not sleep for three days for him not to have his way and because he is fond of charms and he is dangerous. I don’t trust him.”

Folake told the court that her husband burgled her wardrobe and stole all her money, adding that her he stole her money at will. She also said she had always been paying for their rent and feeding her child.

“My husband has threatened to kill me uncountable times; so, I want the court to dissolve the union for me to have peace,” she pleaded.

Her 45-year-old husband, Kehinde Adewale, a butcher, admitted that he used to forcefully make love to his wife because she was denying him his right.

He said: “My wife used to starve me of sex for a month and since I don’t have any girlfriend, I force her whenever I am at the peak.”

Saying that he was always paying the rent and providing for the family, Adewale said he never stole her wife’s money and had never beaten her.

He insisted that he still loved his wife. The court president, Chief Awos Awosola, adjourned the case till November 25 for further hearing.

  • Lawyer urges court to declare ‘environmental Saturdays’ illegal

Lawyer urges court to declare ‘environmental Saturdays’ illegal

Rights activist Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to declare the monthly environmental sanitation exercise illegal.

He said the restriction of movement during the “clean-up” from 7am till 10am has no legal basis.

Besides, he said it grossly violates the right to freedom of movement as guaranteed in the Constitution.

The lawyer is seeking a declaration that the restriction of his movement, and that of other residents of Lagos State on the last Saturday of every month, constitutes a breach of their rights.

Adegboruwa said no law in Lagos State approves the compulsory detention of citizens at home for three hours for the purpose of observing a mandatory sanitation.

Inspector-General of Police Suleiman Abba, Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola and the Attorney-General Mr Ade Ipaye; Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and the ministry are the respondents.

The lawyer is praying for an order restraining the respondents either by themselves or their privies from restricting his movement and that of other Lagos residents on the last Saturday of every month

He is also asking the court to direct the respondents to forthwith allow him and other residents to move freely on the last Saturday of every month, in exercise of their fundamental rights.

In a supporting affidavit, Adegboruwa said he had been restricted on several last Saturdays from going out on the grounds of an Environmental Sanitation exercise.

For instance, he said on June 28 last year, he was invited by a television station for a 9am program on a Saturday.

“The next morning of June 29, 2013, I set out from my house in Lekki to honour the said invitation.  At the Ketu interchange on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, I was arrested and detained by police officers on the ground that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise was going on.

“The expressway was blocked by policemen, and officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), also used their pick up vans to block the road, to prevent access and to hinder free movement.

“I have a monthly arrangement with one of the companies licenced by Lagos State to clear refuse, and they deploy their trucks to my house regularly, to dispose of all the waste generated by my household.

“I am aware that the sixth respondent has granted several other private firms the right to manage waste disposal in Lagos State.

“I verily believe that the restriction of human and vehicular movement constitutes a breach of the fundamental human right of freedom of movement as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter,” he said.

Justice Mohammed Idris ordered that hearing notices to be served on the respondents and adjourned till January 28 next year for hearing.

Adegboruwa had successfully sued Lagos State over toll collection on the Ikoyi bridge.

Justice Saliu Saidu, in a March 27 judgment, held there was no law backing the tolling. The state appealed against the verdict and obtained a stay of execution.

  • ‘My husband watched our son die’

•Man to court: ‘No, I tried to make him live’

A middle-aged trader, Monsurat Abdulganiu, has taken her husband, Oyewole, before the Alakuko Customary Court in Lagos, to seek the dissolution of their 22-year-old marriage.

Alleging that her husband “is adulterous and irresponsible,” she said: “Since his relations were against our marriage because I limp, I couldn’t inform his siblings about his disruptive behaviour. When our house got burnt, my husband rented an apartment with another woman, leaving me with our children in a mosque. Since then, we have been separated and he stopped catering for our children. Early this year, I told him I needed some money to treat our first child who was ill, but before he sent the money, our son died.”

“It’s been nine years since we separated. My husband has never asked after our children’s welfare. Now, he wants to take them, leaving me with none. I want my children in my custody. I have been struggling to make ends meet,” she further said.

However, 47-year-old Abdulganiu denied the allegation, saying: “Yes, I couldn’t visit our son when he was ill because I was busy at work. I was still planning to take him to a hospital when my wife informed me about his death, but I had sent her N60, 000 for his treatment. I am responsible. I am not adulterous. I only married another woman because we were once divorced.”

The court’s President Olubode Sekoni fixed a chamber discussion for the couple and ordered them to bring four relations each. He adjourned the matter till November 24.
