We want to help them realise their full potential. If some of them would embrace trades, the church may provide financial assistance of about N50, 000 each.”

The incident occurred about 3am when a high-tension wire fell on the roof of house 8, Olumokun Street, Amukoko, sparking off fire.

The girl, simply identified as Fatima, was said to have visited her elder sister, popularly known in the area as Mama Ibrahim.

The victim, who was said to be on vacation from Niger State, was electrocuted while holding an iron stand of a canopy on which the cable had fallen.

When Mama Ibrahim noticed that Fatima had fallen on the iron and was motionless, she screamed her name but without a reply.

“When Fatima did not reply, Mama Ibrahim moved to where she was and tried to rescue her and was also electrocuted. Tears flowed freely as neighbours who could not salvage the situation watched helplessly as the sisters died,” an eyewitness said.

It was gathered that residents had complained that both the high-tension wire and the transformer were too close to the building.

A resident, Shola Ahmed, confirmed that both victims hailed from Niger State, adding that the late Mama Ibrahim’s husband is an inter-state driver who was outside the state when the incident occurred.

She said the fire from the incident was put out by residents and policemen led by the officer in charge of Amukoko Police Station, Mr Nosiru Ayoade, a Superintendent (SP), before electricity officials arrived the scene and switched off power supply to the area

Ayoade was said to have prevented the angry residents from lynching the electricity officials who rushed to the scene.

The traditional ruler of Nupe people in Amukoko, Wokili Nupe Mohammed Abdullahi, called to inform the late woman’s husband about the incident.

He also directed that the corpses be removed and moved to their Niger State hometown for burial according to the Muslim rite.

Three held ‘for burgling gold stores’

Three suspects have been arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Lagos State Police Command for allegedly stealing jewellery valued at over N23 million from a shop.

A police source said the incident occurred at a shop owned by a woman, simply identified as Mrs. Ekong, on Unity Road, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja in Lagos.

It said the prime suspect, Moses Obanda was arrested in his hideout at Agege, a day after, while the others were apprehended last week.

Obanda and the other suspects, Ogbulaja Ogaba and Izuchukwu Ezeobi, are currently being interrogated by operatives, following a report by the

Obanda, who was a security guard at the gold shop, was alleged to have carried out the operation alone as the two others he invited did not show up.

The police source also claimed that he had been charged with kidnapping and murder in the past after his gang killed a victim along the Ibadan-Sagamu Road after collected a ransom.

Explaining the tricks of the gang, the source said its members would secure employment as security guards in gold stores and supermarkets with the intention of robbing them.

The suspects usually use fake certificates, fake house addresses and unregistered SIM cards to seek employment, making it almost impossible to trace them after they had struck, said the source.

The source said after the shop was burgled, Obanda invited his accomplices to a hotel at Bolade in Oshodi, where they discussed how to share and sell the gold.

“Ogaba got 35 pieces of the gold, which he sold to one Jubril Garba for N80,000. Obanda took the remaining to Yaba and sold it at a giveaway price of N1m and another for N105,000,” it said.

After the deal, Obanda allegedly moved his family to Benue State to evade arrest, opened a hair-dressing saloon for his wife and started plank business.

Obanda, who lives at Olufunmilayo Close, Agbado Ijaiye, a Lagos suburb, said he secured employment into the store in October, 2013 with the fake certificates belonging to his younger brother.

“On December 22, last year, we bought chemicals with which we softened the wall. But I knew where they kept the keys of the stores which I used to open the place. That was the first time I would open the place. I decided to do the burglary alone because I had done a similar burglary before, which took me to the Alausa Police Division. I spent five days in detention,” he confessed.

Benue State-born Ogaba, who said Obanda invited him for the operation, explained: “One morning, he told me that he had carried it out alone, asking me to meet him at a location. There, he gave me 35 pieces to sell for him. I did and got N80,000, but I could not find him to deliver the money. He told me later on phone that he had gone to Benue and that I should enjoy the money. I used the money for my siblings’ examinations.”

Izuchukwu, who hails from Anambra State, who said he was not involved in the act, however, said: “I only provided him with a buyer called Ibrahim, but I did not get any money from whatever amount he sold it. I am innocent.”

Ebola: Lagos takes campaign to Eko Club

The Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) has stepped up the sensitisation campaign on safety precautions against the spread of the dreaded Ebola Virus.

The state Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Wale Ahmed, who led the commission’s team to the Eko Club in Surulere, stated that creating panic over the disease by the public is not good for the state.

He said: “It is an advocacy and sensitisation drive to let people know certain basic things they can do to ensure safety in the community. And to ensure safety, people need to follow safety precautions to the letter.

“One of the ways to safety is to follow the basic safety instructions. That is why we are here to let club members know that putting safety signs in the hall will make safety easy in case of emergency. Lack of those signs is what causes stampede and death in case of emergency,”

The commissioner urged residents to report any suspect of the virus to the state government for immediate and appropriate action, adding that they should not panic.

The Director General of LSSC, Mrs Dominga Omolara Odebunmi, urged members of the club to take safety precautions seriously and take the message to their various homes.

The club’s President, Mr Babatunde Faruk Grillo, who was made its safety ambassador, said it would take safety issues with all seriousness and continue to sensitise its members on the need for safety.

Apart from unveiling a statue of the club’s president, Ahmed presented game kits, ludo, chess, snake and ladder to the club.

  • Council chief dismisses ‘suspension’

    Council chief dismisses ‘suspension’

The crisis rocking the Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State heightened yesterday as its councillors reportedly sent a letter to the chairman, Tajudeen Ajide, suspending him from office indefinitely.

A source said the “suspension” was aimed at denying the chairman of the opportunity of being appointed the council’s executive secretary after the expiration of his administration in October.

The councillors were alleged to be acting the scripts of two prominent lawmakers representing the area at higher levels who have been at loggerheads with the chairman over some issues.

Yesterday’s move, the source added, might not be unconnected with the success of Ajide’s recent poverty alleviation programme despite the said lawmakers’ effort to abort it.

In a telephone chat, however, Ajide, confirmed the incident, but said he was “on top of the situation.”

He said the councillors had earlier asked him to defend himself of some phoney allegations today, adding that he was surprised to receive another letter suspending him from office indefinitely yesterday.

Ajide, who said he remained undeterred, described the development as unconstitutional, insisting that he remained the chairman of the council.

He urged residents, especially his supporters, to be calm and go about their legitimate businesses, assuring that the matter would be resolved urgently.

  • Residents lament bad roads

    Residents lament bad roads

Leaders and residents of Oshorun, Ilemere and Orupodi in Igbogbo-Baiyeku Local Government Area of Lagos State have decried the poor state of the major access road leading to the areas.

They said the road – Ibeshe-Oshorun Ilemere and Orupodi road – has worsened the social and economic life in the communities, especially during the rainy season.

The communities urged Governor Babatunde Fashola to look into their complaints before leaving office.

The residents, during a protest at the weekend, added that the activities of dredgers in the areas, with their heavy-duty vehicles plying the road daily, have compounded the state of the road.

A Community Development Association’s (CDA) Chairman, Mr. Martins Leye Adedipo and Secretary, Mr. Sam Olawa Sigbeku, explained that the major road and other adjoining roads are deplorable, while sections that are motorable are in very poor state.

Adedipo said most commercial vehicle operators and motorcyclists operating in areas had abandoned the road while the few remaining “hike their fares astronomically.”

The CDA chairman said: “Private vehicle can no longer ply this road and other access roads since the vehicles are constantly taken for repairs.

“Residents, often times, resort to trekking long distances in the morning while going to work and coming back, leading to valuable man-hours lost and increasing the stress level of the residents.

“Most times, school buses breakdown, taking its toll on the children’s education and health. Pregnant women sometimes give birth on the road while being taken to hospitals.”

The communities called on the state government to quickly come to their rescue to fix the road and reduce the suffering of the residents.

They claimed that one of the communities – Ilemere – is seriously under Lagoon threat, due to activities of dredgers.

Another community leader, Pa Joseph Adeola, several entreaties have been made to the government to assist the communities with no response.

“We resorted to self-help most times but the project is far more than what our resources could fix,” he said.

  • Ladipo traders to Fashola: fix our road

Ladipo traders to Fashola: fix our road

The authority of the Ladipo Auto Spares Market, yesterday urged Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to fix the damaged roads linking the market.

The affected roads are: Akinwunmi linking it with the Five Star bus stop on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway; Ajibade Close, and a long portion of Ladipo Street, linking Toyota bus-stop, Oshodi.

The President of the Ladipo Central Executive Committee (LACEC), Mr. Iyke Animalu, who spoke during the traders’ their monthly sanitation, said the situation of the roads had reached a devastating peak as their spares’ container trailers could no longer access the market.

Animalu said the traders could no longer get spares to sell and thus, losing a lot of revenue on a daily basis, while their clients suffer.

He stated that the traders might not be able to meet their obligations of paying their taxes and rates to both the Mushin Local Government and the state government if the situation persists.

“A contractor came with a tractor and graded the Akinwunmi Road without tarring it and went to a television programme that he had already completed the work, which is a blatant lie by the contractor,” he recalled.

Animalu also said that the “park and pay” operators brought to Ladipo Road by politicians had been flouting the memorandum of understanding signed by the traders and state government by parking on both sides of the road, thus obstructing traffic.

The LACEC boss called on Fashola to save the situation immediately before things went out of hands.

  • Joy as lawmaker empowers constituents

    Joy as lawmaker empowers constituents

Over 1000 loyalists of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been empowered at a Mega Empowerment Programme powered by the lawmaker representing Lagos East Senatorial District, ýSenator ‘Gbenga Ashafa.

The event, which took place at the Iberekodo Primary School, Ibeju-Lekki, drew beneficiaries from across the 11 wards in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government area and Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

Among the items distributed to the beneficiaries were: deep freezers, vulcanizing machines, hair dryers, barbing kits, power-generating sets and sewing machines. Financial grants were also offered 500 women members.

Ashafa said the gesture was aimed at reducing unemployment in the society, adding: “Before now, we have done a general empowerment programme throughout the five council areas and 11 LCDAs across the district. At Epe and Eredo on March 8, 2013, over 300 women benefited. We have put place a weekly empowerment programme since March, last year, where men, women, youths and various associations received business tools and equipment.

“This is our own effort to ensure that unemployment is considerably reduced by discouraging our people from seeking white-collar jobs that are visibly unavailable. If every individual can rely on his skills rather than certificates, unemployment will reduce in the society.”

He added: “Our weekly empowerment programme is just one of the numerous initiatives we have implemented since 2011. Till date, we have successfully executed 76 constituency projects across the district. Some of these projects include:30 boreholes, 11classroom blocks, two drainage channels, four ambulance points;  22 transformers, three street lamps on arterial roads, one skill acquisition centre and one science laboratory.”

Advising the beneficiaries, Ashafa said: ”It will be a thing of joy to see all the beneficiaries doing well with these empowerment tools within a few months from now. Our monitoring team will visit the beneficiaries to ascertain how they have utilised the tools and devise a way of assisting them in the event of any challenge.”

The chairman, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon Kemi Surakat, APC chieftains and traditional rulers from the area, described the initiative as laudable.

A beneficiary, Miss Adebayo Aminat, said: “I am more than glad at the moment. I wasn’t expecting this at all; now I can go to any length to announce that the All Progressives Party is the true party that can bring the dividends of democracy ýto the common man in the street. I pray that God Almighty will continue to enrich Senator Ashafa for doing this for us”.

Mr Hassan Sodiq, who had been hiring his vulcanizing tool to survive on a daily basis, showered encomiums on the lawmaker.

  • Two Beninoise held with human parts

Two Beninoise held with human parts

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two Benin Republic nationals, Gerard Djassau and Sassau Djimon, for allegedly being in possession of a human skull, which portrayed them to be human parts dealers.

It was gathered that Djassau, a native doctor in Benin Republic, was arrested on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway with a human skull concealed in a box.

Following interrogation, 32-year-old Djassau confessed that he got the skull from a herbalist friend in his Cotonou home.

Djimon, also a native doctor who resides at Owode Egba in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, was said to be expecting Djassau to deliver the human parts to him was also arrested.

The suspects, it was learnt, were first arrested by policemen from the Badagry Police Division on August 1, before their case was later transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Djassau, a father of two, said he brought the skull to Lagos for Djimon, for them to use it to get more ‘spiritual powers.’

Speaking through an interpreter, he said: “I have come to Nigeria only once – last year. During that visit, I came as a native doctor to see a fellow practitioner in Abeokuta. That was also the time I met Djimon, compatriot. So, I told him I was travelling and would come later to meet him.

“I needed more powers to treat more ailments; and I said I was going to get the parts which would be needed to seek these powers. I knew very well that it was a crime because my heart was not even at rest as we approached Lagos. Eventually, I was caught. I did not kill the person. We don’t kill people in my community. They get the parts from whoever was killed by any mysterious means such as thunder, lightning and other spells. Such people are not to be buried so that they will not defile the land.”

Djimon, 28, claimed he was truly expecting Djassau to pay him a visit, but said he was not aware that he was coming with a human skull.

Djimon, a father of five, said: “Although I am a Benin national, I grew up in Lagos; that is why I can speak Yoruba. I work as a native doctor too in the Owode Egba area of Abeokuta. I treat barren women and people with epilepsy, blood pressure and other ailments.

“When Djassau came to my house last year, he consulted our fellow native doctors and said he needed more powers for his work. When he was leaving, he told me he would be bringing an idol for me from Benin Republic, which would be used to get the powers. I did not know he was bringing a human skull until policemen stormed my house to arrest me.”

Their arrest, it was learnt, followed an order by the former Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Umar Manko, directing the SARS operatives, led by Abba Kyari, to take over the case and unravel the matter.

Policemen attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, Lagos Mainland, were stunned last Friday when a five-year-old girl allegedly defiled by a 22-year-old man demanded a gun to kill him.

The victim asked one of the investigating police officers (IPOs) to give her his gun so that she would shoot the suspect and end the case, adding that he was not fit to live among human beings.

The incident occurred after the suspect, simply identified as Okafor, was arrested and brought to face the complaint during interrogation.

Police investigation showed that the victim was with her trader-mother when Okafor called her to accompany him somewhere.

He was said to have taken the victim into an uncompleted building in Dansa area of Badagry, forcefully raped her, dragged her on the floor and left her with bruises.
