    •15-year-old undergoes kidney transplant

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has successfully performed its first open-heart surgery,  its Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Akin Osibogun, said yesterday.

Osibogun, said the feat was novel in the hospital’s history, adding: “Three open-heart surgeries were performed on an 18-month-old baby girl, a seven-year-old boy and a 23-year-old undergraduate.”

He told reporters that the patients were in stable condition, adding that they would leave for home today.

Osibogun expressed satisfaction that LUTH has joined University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Nsukka in Enugu State and University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State in carrying out such surgery.

Doctors at the hospital, he said, were joined by experts from Hopitaux Universitaires de Geneve, Switzerland, Greece and Istanbul, Turkey to achieve the feat. There was a visiting team of specialists from the Mansoura Hospital, Egypt, he added.

He said that it would take a while before LUTH doctors were left to perform the surgery alone, adding that it is part of technology transfer for doctors to be supervised by those teaching them.

Osibogun said some doctors were sent to Mansura Hospital and India for training, adding that they have now improved on their expertise to deliver qualitative care.

He said cardiac and renal surgeries were the major reasons why people seek treatment abroad, adding that this is followed by knee/ joint replacement surgery.

The CMD said a kidney transplant was also carried out on a 15-year-old who came down with nephritic syndrome, adding that the patient had been on dialysis for over six years before the transplantation.

He said the reason some organs fail after transplantation is because they may not properly match or the patients’ refusal to take their drugs as advised by doctors.

    ‘Death, please come now’

•Breast cancer patient needs N7m to survive

Some months ago, I was only worried about my children; now, I am in deeper pains. Every second now, I pray for death to come quickly and take me away. God will take care of my children should I die. Death must come now, if help refuses to come my way”

Writhing in pains amid tears yesterday, Mrs Oluwabunmi Olabiyi, who has been battling breast cancer for over three years, prayed for death.

Holding our reporter by his leg, the mother of three said: “This pain is too much for me to bear any longer; please, help me beg death to come now!”

Mrs Olabiyi’s looked despondent as she stared at her swollen arms in self-pity. “God will raise people to help you; be hopeful,” a relation pleaded as he broke down in tears.

Mrs Olabiyi realised something might be wrong when her last child, Emmanuel began to refuse to suck her right breast.

Whenever she tried to force the breast on the boy, he resorted to crying.

“He was always crying each time I attempted to force it on him. Suddenly, I noticed a lump in my right breast, following which I sought medical attention,” she told The Nation.

She was told at the hospital that she had developed breast lump, but she wasted no time to get it removed on April 22, 2010.

Mrs Olabiyi thought her troubles were over until a few months later when another medical diagnosis revealed a cancerous growth in the same breast.

At that point, her fortunes began to decline. However, her family rose to the occasion. But with no financial help from anywhere, she underwent her second surgery on June 10, 2011, during which the breast was removed.

Her hope of returning to business got a boost when she raised a loan.

When she felt better days had come, armed robbers broke into her shop near her Ijoko, Ogun State home. Mrs Olabiyi was still smarting from the setback when yet another medical diagnosis gave her a shocker: Her second breast has been infected with cancer!

As the infection festered, she sought help from the public through an account with the Zenith Bank under the name: Bunmi Olabiyi, with number, 1004542305. Reason: She needs N7million to help her undergo treatment in India.

Family sources said the efforts yielded about N300,000,  which has gone into chemotherapy, a temporary treatment aimed at weakening the cells of the cancer. She has been doing this pending when she can raise the N7million.

The Nation gathered yesterday that she might be sent out of the Bariga, Lagos-based hospital where she has been for some time, for lack of funds.

Mrs Olabiyi was born about 34 years ago in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where she obtained her first school leaving certificate.

The third girl in a family of six, with only two survivors, she lost her mother at a tender age, following which she was sent to Lagos to learn a trade.

Luck smiled on her as she grew to become a successful business woman.

She got blessed with three children – two boys and a girl – before her ailment started.

  • Man allegedly stabs girlfriend to death in hotel room

The Police have arrested a man for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend to death during a fight at Alapere, a Lagos suburb.

The incident occurred at a hotel on Tuesday evening. The suspect was handed over to the police by a hotel worker.

The victim’s family alleged that the suspect lured her to the hotel and attempted to chop off her breasts and fingers, apparently for ritual, adding that in the process the fight broke.

The hotel workers were said to have had a shout from the room, following which they forced the door open and met the deceased in a pool of her blood.

Efforts to save her failed as she reportedly died before reaching the hospital.

Her remains were deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary.

A bereaved relative, who asked not to be named, said: “What we heard was that on reaching the hotel, the suspect ordered for a drink. As our daughter was sipping hers, he brought out a pair of scissors and started cutting one of her breasts. She started screaming at that point. Not done, he cut one of her fingers and attempted to gag her so as to finish his satanic mission. Her scream alerted people who came to her rescue.

“We were told she gave this version when she was being rushed to the hospital. We were also told the boyfriend attempted to escape but was apprehended by the hotel staff before policemen from Alapere arrived. Her death has plunged everyone into sorrow and agony. All we want is for the police to interrogate him and find out why he killed our daughter.”

Police’s spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), confirmed the incident, saying: “Yes, we have such a case, but that is not how it happened. What happened was that a man stabbed his girlfriend with scissors in a hotel room during a fight and the lady was rushed to a hospital where she later died. The man is in our custody and investigation has begun.”

  • Motorcycle parts dealer arrested with cannabis

Motorcycle parts dealer arrested with cannabis

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended 39-year-old motorcycle parts dealer based at Nnewi, Anambra State, while attempting to smuggle 11.06 kilogrammes of dried weeds that tested positive for cannabis to China.

Ogbodo Chibuzor David, who concealed the drugs in various food items, was arrested following the discovery of cannabis inside his bags at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

NDLEA commander at the airport, Mr. Hamza Umar said that the suspect was to board a Qatar Airline flight when he was nabbed.

He said: “We have apprehended one Ogbodo Chibuzor David with dried weeds that tested positive for cannabis. He was found with 21parcels of cannabis hidden inside his bags on his way to China. His travel route as contained in his ticket is Lagos to Doha and from Doha to Guangzhou.”

The suspect told investigators that he wanted to sell the drugs and use his profit to buy motorcycle parts in China.

“I gave a business partner $30,000 to supply me goods and he disappeared. That brought my business to its knees and I have been struggling to take care of my wife and a child since a year ago. I met many people for financial assistance but nobody was willing to help until I was wrongly advised. A friend told me to smuggle cannabis to China,” Ogbodo stated.

Ogbodo, who hails from Enugu State, added: “I bought the cannabis for N200,000. My friend told me that I would make a profit of $10,000 after selling the cannabis in China. I was only interested in getting money for my motorcycle parts business.”

Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, expressed delight over the suspect’s arrest, adding that he would have faced capital punishment if caught with drugs in China.

“Drug trafficking is criminal and many traffickers have died prematurely. I am glad that we prevented the suspect from facing capital punishment in China,” he stated.

While calling on the public to avoid drug trafficking, Giade assured that the Agency would continue to protect citizens’ lives, adding that the suspect would soon be charged to court.

  • ‘Permanent parks ‘ll ease traffic in Apapa’

‘Permanent parks ‘ll ease traffic in Apapa’

•Fed Govt plans relocation of Tank Farms

To quell the traffic logjam bedeviling Apapa area of Lagos State, the federal government yesterday urged the state government to build permanent holding bay for trucks and tankers to park.

The Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, made the call at the headquarters, Western Naval Command (WNC), Apapa, after being led on an assessment tour by the Flag Officer Commanding, Rear Admiral Sanmi Alade.

Obanikoro, who said the bay would keep the trucks and trailers, who hinder free flow of traffic off the roads, stated that the 500-truck park being constructed by the federal government at Tincan Island would serve as holding bay.

While noting that the deplorable state of the roads he visited (Coconut, Liverpool and Creek), also compounded traffic situation in the area, the minister assured that the federal government would speed up rehabilitation actions to save the situation.

He said: “There are plans and we are also working with all the stakeholders to ensure that the area is kept under check. It is not easy to close all these things overnight but what is important is to call for more vigilance on the part of the operators. Let me assure that all the security agencies in this country are alert to what is at stake and everything humanly possible is being done to contain such misfortune.

“There is need for the state to have a permanent holding bay for trucks. It is when that is provided that there can be a radio link between the port and the bay so that whenever the port is ready to have them, a radio message would be passed across and the affected trucks can go into Apapa. We cannot afford not to do that and we need to do it as quickly as possible. I believe that Lagos State Government will act fast.”

“The park at Tincan Island is still under construction. We will do everything possible to complete it in the shortest time possible but is not a permanent holding bay. For some time now, we have been looking at the security implication of allowing trailers and trucks use the road as parks rather than for movement. With the activities of Boko Haram and other elements, we believe strongly that people may want to negatively take advantage of the chaotic situation around the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA).

“I am happy that the Nigerian Navy (NN) moved in and so far, all the standing trucks have been moved and passage way created to ensure smooth vehicular movement in the area, thus, eliminating the security threat of having trucks and containers littering the entire area. Naval officers have been assigned and are still on the road to ensure free traffic and they have almost completed eliminated the congestion except for the issues we have with the roads, which is affecting movement,” he added.

Obanikoro further said: “As you can see, Julius Berger (construction firm) is trying to bring relief. I have it on good authority that there is significant improvement and I commend the navy for bringing in other stakeholders to contain the situation. Though there is significant socio-economic benefit of having traffic-free movement in and out of the port, the main element that prompted the navy to swing into action is security.

“Blame game does not solve issues. It is a common problem and we need every stakeholder to be part of the solution. We all have responsibilities to the people of Lagos and Nigerians. So, the state government should join hands with the NPA and other stakeholders in finding a lasting solution. It is not the navy’s duty to clear traffic and so, their effort towards ending the gridlock cannot be permanent.”

Also speaking, Alade said it took the navy about four days to achieve sanity after flagging off the operation to clear the congestion, adding: “For now, we are still on the road. The operation is still active and until we call it off, naval personnel we remain on the road.”

However, the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN); the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) as well as the truck and trailer drivers accused one of the concessionaires of compounding traffic situation in Apapa.

The deputy chairman of RTEAN, Anthony Agbanosi, said the concessionaire has a holding bay that can accommodate about 300 trucks but does not allow them in because it makes more money from the renewal of loading permit.

“However, between now and September, all the empty containers would no longer line up along the road but they will park at the International holding bay and if there is any need to bring an empty container to the port, the vehicle will produce its empty container certificate.

“The holding bay is along Badagry road and this is to ensure that any vehicle that has no business at the port does not enter APAPA to cause traffic. Hence, any vehicle parked on the road would be impounded and the owners prosecuted,” Agbanosi said.

An Apapa resident, Kayode Animasaun, said they were working actively with the committee set up by the navy to ensure free flowing traffic, adding: “The traffic situation has been paralyzing, but I commend the navy because they have remained committed to reducing the plight of the people since they started controlling the situation.”

•Allegedly forge government documents, bank cheques

Three suspected fraudsters who specialise in forging bank cheques to defraud account owners have been arrested in Lagos by operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).

The suspects allegedly act as travel agents operating with forged letters of introduction from government departments in Ekiti State to obtain visa for their victims.

The suspects, Kola Ademola (33), Kola Osho (57) and Adesola Oyedepo, are now telling detectives their levels of involvement in the alleged crime.

They allegedly stole cheques from unsuspecting persons and used same to withdraw money from their accounts.

They were arrested after a tip-off by detectives on July 24 following a directive to the Officer in Charge of SARS Abba Kiyari, a Superintendent (SP) by the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko.

Ademola was arrested with two dud cheques, while Osho was caught with forged documents bearing Ekiti State House of Assembly and Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.

The confession of Ademola who was arrested in the pipeline area of Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb, led to the arrest of Osho at his makeshift office on Allen Avenue, Ikeja.

The suspects told operatives that their connection with some insiders in the banks where they operated facilitated their withdrawals.

Ademola, who hails from Ikire, Osun State, said he is an Education Consultant who is married with two children. He added that he holds a degree in Business Administration from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, from where he graduated in 2006 and served his compulsory one-year National Youth Service in Otupo Benue State in 2007.

Confessing, he said: “I am an Educational Consultant. I enroll students for final examination and extra-mural classes. I also do tutorials. I met one Samson who helps me to get the dude cheques. That his job. These bank cheques are usually brought to us by our boys. They are original cheques and we deliver them to insiders who now work on them and deliver cash. But because of the present cashless policy, we can withdraw less than N100,000 which would not require the confirmation or presence of signatories. This is the third cheque I would be bringing to Osho, but he said he had no insider in that particular bank. The first cheque I gave him, he said the account did not contain any money. The second one too was not successful so we have not made any money on this thing”.

Osho, who hails from Ado-Ekiti, said: “I wanted to use the documents found on me to apply for United Kingdom visa. I believe that if I used the letter-head, the embassy would speed up my application…I knew I was cheating when I got those documents, but I had no option”.

However, Oyedepo, an Ibadan, Oyo State indigene, said: “I am an accounting graduate from a Polytechnic in Oyo State. I graduated in 2007 with a Higher National Diploma (HND). I don’t know what the police are talking about. I had come to Osho to transact business and they arrested me. I do not deal in dud cheques; I am innocent.”
