  • N100 tears couple apart

Shock waves ran through the Alagbado Customary Court in Lagos, yesterday, when Omolara Adekunle, who wore a forlorn look, prayed the Alagbado Customary Court, Ile-Iwe, Lagos, to dissolve her marriage of 10 years with her husband, Sunkanmi.

The union, which is blessed with three children, has, for many years, been enmeshed in troubles.

With tears cascading her face, Omolara  said: “I have never enjoyed the ‘fun’ and attention deserving of a married woman. With three children, my husband gives me N100 per day. Even when he is financially buoyant, he prefers to spend it on Indian hemp. I can’t remember the last time my husband bought a dress for me or even appreciated my efforts towards the family. I always complain bitterly whenever he sniffs in the sitting room. Instead of taking to correction, he beats me mercilessly to the extent of using a bottle on my head. As the father, I want the responsibilities of our children in his care, but I want them in my custody.”

However, Adekunle, who wore a pitiful look, said dissolution of the marriage was the least in mind. He claimed to give her N500 per day, but could not afford N15,000 monthly for three children.

“We have lived happily together as a family. Through thick and thin, she stood by me. All she said is true, but I seek forgiveness. I am jobless and can’t afford to cater for their needs. I need my wife in my life because she has always given me her back to lean on,” he pleaded.

The court President,  Mr Olabode Sekoni, therefore, adjourned the case till July 21, for judgment.

The Federal special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Adeniji- Adele in Lagos paraded yesterday an armed robbery gang.

Among them is Odeyemi Itunnu, who was described as an Ekiti politician.

The police linked the gang to the snatching of exotic vehicles in many parts of the country.

Itunnu (a.k.a Gomina) who the police said is an executive member of Efon-Alaaye Local Government Area of Ekiti State, is also alleged to be a political thug.

The other suspects are:Omoniyi Ajewole, Oluseye Jacob, Oluwadamiliare Rasaki, Ajisafe Olawale, Ogunniyi Sunday, Tolani Babatunde, Abubakar Umar and Ayodeji Olumudi.

The Nation learnt that the suspects were arrested following a complaint by a victim, who was robbed of two vehicles and other valuables on June 27, last year, at his Ile-Ife, Osun State home.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, an Assistant Commissioner (ACP), who paraded the suspects, said they were arrested following  discreet, sustained and painstaking investigation. He said  17 exotic cars and other exhibits  were recovered.

Mba said the gun recovered by operatives was given to one of the suspects by Itunnu but the suspected robber preferred to be addressed as a political thug.

It was gathered that the arrest of Ajewole, 28, from Ilesa in Osun State, led to the smashing of other members of the gang.

Itunnu confessed that he provided Ajewole with a locally-made gun, which the police have recovered, to protect him during  elections.

He said: “Omoniyi (Ajewole) is my political thug. I brought him to my place and gave him a gun to secure me. Actually, I have never participated in any robbery operation, but he used to escort me with the gun.”

Ajewole, the first to be  caught by the police, confessed  that he had been working as a political thug.

He said: “He gave me the gun to use in protecting him during any campaign against violence. But I had not yet used the gun before I was arrested in September, 2013. I am not a robber.

“I prefer to be called a political thug. I was the only one the honourable gave a gun actually, and he was also paying me salaries.”

It was learnt that after their arrest, the FSARS recovered 17 of the cars stolen in various parts of the country, most of which were Toyota and Honda models. Three assorted guns were also recovered from them.

Mba said the suspects would soon be arraigned in court.

He said: “This is a case that started on June 27, 2013 when a Nigerian was robbed of two vehicles and other valuables after which he reported it to the police.

“This arrest is one of the achievements of the FSARS. It led to the arrest of nine suspects who were clearly linked with not just the armed robbery reported, but a series of such in several parts of the country.”

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested seven men for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl in the Ajegunle area of the state.

It was gathered that parents of the girl suspected that something was wrong with her owing to the uncoordinated way she was walking, following which she interrogated her.

Her father, a resident of Oduduwa Street, GRA, Ikeja, said his daughter confessed to him after he threatened to flog her.

The father said six of the men live in the same house with them, while the other suspect lives in the next compound.

He added that his daughter confessed that they had been having carnal knowledge of her for over one month, adding that the youngest of the suspects is 27 years old.

The angry father said her daughter disclosed to him that after the first man raped her, he invited others to follow suit at the same venue.

He said the girl also alleged that the suspects usually threatened to tell her father that a man had sex with her if she did not allow them to have their turns.

Policemen attached to Ajegunle Police Station arrested the suspects at the weekend and detained them, while the girl was taken to a private hospital on Ugbenwankwo Street, Ajegunle, for treatment.

  • ‘I often beat her, but she’s my love’

The middle-aged food vendor, Olakemi, has prayed the Customary Court, Alakuko, a Lagos suburb, to dissolve her relationship with her husband to save her from being beaten to death.

The woman, who took her husband, Yinka Afolami, a motorcyclist resident in Alakuko, to court for frequently beating her and stealing her money, said: “We did not marry under the native and customary law, but when I was expecting his child, he took me to live with his mother as a couple. Each time there is an argument, he does not settle it amicably; he beats me, leaving scars on my body, claiming that my presence brought evil omen to him because he lost his job at a printing press. “He often steals my money at midnight, but whenever I accuse him, he beats me without pity. After severally warning me not to come close to his house, I left for a church, but I’m still responsible for our child’s upkeep.”

However, Afolami told the court that he had warned her severally against staying out late but she wouldn’t listen. “That is what caused the beating. I buy food stuffs and cook, but she would eat the food. She is too busy to take proper care of our child. I don’t know about her stolen money, but I still want this marriage because I love her,” he said.

The court’s President, Chief Godwin Awosola, advised Olakemi to pack out her personal belongings within two weeks and told her husband to refund her stolen money. He adjourned the case till July 17.

The President of the Heroes Forum, Mr. Gboyega Amoboye, has asked the National Assembly and the National Conference to provide in the nation’s constitution, a public holiday for the celebration of its heroes to foster unity.

In a statement, Amoboye, a media consultant, said for the labour of our heroes past and living not to be in vain, conscious effort must be made to remember and celebrate them annually “just as the United States (US) does annually to the memory of the late black American activist, Martins Luther King Jnr.”

He said that there was no reason we should be unable to celebrate ours if the country used to celebrate British Heroes as Empire Day.

Amoboye also sought a national burial for the late former Minister of Information, Prof Dora Akunyili, whom he described as the “best female president Nigeria had looked up to,” in appreciation of her selfless and most patriotic service to her fatherland.

  • Residents deny attacks on electricity staff, station

Residents of Mafoluku Oshodi in Lagos State, under the aegis of Mafoluku Community Residents’ Association, have denied attacking officials of the Ikeja Distribution Company (IKEDC). They described as “a cocktail of lies,” company’s claim that members of the community assaulted its workers during a protest on June 21.

The residents said the protest was to call attention to their plight, having been paying outrageous estimated bills for many years.  The association said it had met many times with officials of IKEDC in order to resolve the problem to no avail.

It said the rally was peaceful, adding that at no time were the police invited.

The movement to IKEDC’s office, the association said, was at the instance of reporters, who witnessed the protest, noting that the group met no staff at the office. The group maintained that contrary to claims of the power company, none of the journalists reported a brearkdown in law and order.

On the temporary shutdown of Mafoluku injection substation, the association said it was done as a “punitive measure to discourage Nigerians from exercising their rights to proper billing system.”

The group said the residents had been responsible for fixing and maintaining electricity cables and other spares of the company.

The residents said they would no longer be responsible for the provision and maintenance of IKEDC facilities.

They sought a 50-percent reduction on all estimated and coded bills from January till when pre-paid metres would be available.

The residents also insisted that the 50 percent reduced bill would only be paid after a duly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between them and IKEDC.

Besides demanding a public apology from the company for spreading what they called malicious information about the community, the residents are seeking immediate restoration of power in the area. The resident said they are open to dialogue with the company.

  • Training for commercial drivers

To promote road safety and improve road users’ habits, Lekki Concession Company (LCC) has completed the second edition of training and re-certification for 100 of the 200 drivers selected from commercial bus operators from motor parks located in Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki.

Head of Commercial, LCC, Mr. Charles Imevbore, said: “We maintain regular dialogue with recognised road transport unions and private operators, thus providing an avenue for continuous coaching on road safety guidelines and best practices, including features such as proper use of roundabouts and illegal parking,” he said.

He added: “Improving road safety in a sustainable way means that road users need to adapt their behaviour accordingly, and to learn to drive more responsibly. LCC alone cannot achieve this; others (law enforcement agencies, the wider community etc) have a major role to play.”

“We hope that our modest contributions so far and those we plan to develop, will bring positive change and save lives. We encourage commercial operators to register on our eTag, an electronic toll payment device, which charges N80 exclusively for commercial buses at the toll plaza.”

“With eTag, drivers won’t waste time queueing on the cash lanes, thus they can make more trips, thus translating into more income for them,” he said.
