  • ‘Let’s boost youths’ talents’

Nigerians must develop the creative talents of youths, the Director-General, Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Mr. Afam Ezekude, admonished yesterday in his goodwill message on this year’s World Intellectual Property Day.

According to him, this year’s theme, “Creativity: the Next Generation,” “underscores the strategic importance of the younger generation of inventors, scientists, authors, musicians, artistes, etc, to the future of mankind and the sustenance of national aspirations in our increasingly knowledge-driven world.”

He said intellectual property remained Nigeria’s most valuable resource which must be harnessed in a responsible and sustainable manner, adding that the spirit of creativity and excellence should be inculcated in Nigerian children, including all supports to enable them realise their God-given talents.

He added: “Our school curriculum should be balanced in both academic learning and the sharpening of creative skills. Greater attention should be paid to extra-curricular activities in our schools and institutional support given to talent hunts at every level of education.”

Ezekude added: “Convinced on the need to invest in the next generation, the Nigerian Copyright Commission will continue to partner with relevant institutions to strengthen the copyright system and give hope to our teeming creative talents”, he stated, adding that with the country’s abundant creative talents, “the nation will not only reproduce the likes of Achebe, Fela, Ogunde and Ladi Kwali, but is already at the threshold of taking creativity and innovation to the next level on a global scale.”

  • How we kidnapped Okonjo-Iweala’s mum, by suspects

How we kidnapped Okonjo-Iweala’s mum, by suspects

How was Queen Kamene Okonjo, mother of Minister of Finance Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, kidnapped from her palace on December 9, last year?

Startling details of her kidnap were given yesterday in Lagos by her abductors, who were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The suspects were paraded at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, by Police Commissioner Umar Manko.

They said they lied to the queen that President Goodluck Jonathan sent them to arrest her and bring her to Abuja because her daughter embezzled billions of naira which she must pay for.

They are Chiejina Victor Onochie, 32, from Ogbeofuu Village in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State; Oko Chukwuma aka Chuks, 32, from Isele Mkpitima in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State; the gang leader, Ogbuem Jideofor aka Marvelous, 22, from Ezi in Aniocha Local Government Area of Delta State; Michael Ojeabulu, 23, from Esan, Edo State; Buhari Amajoda, 27, Hassan Oseni, 29, and Ibrahim Abubakar, 28, all from Adamawa State and Endurance Oke, 22, from Edhere Aviraha Village in Delta State.

They said they were 13 that carried out the operation. One is dead, The Nation learnt; four are at large. They include one popularly known as Buba.

The queen, according to Jideofor, asked them what offence her daughter committed because it was the same president that invited her the minister from London to help manage the country’s economy.

Despite her enquiry, he said, they bundled her into their vehicle and zoomed off.

Jideofor said they fed her with fried rice, bread, gala, 5-Alive juice drink, adding that they initially demanded a N200 million, ransom, but her son, Onyema, later dropped N13 million along a bypass.

He said two persons came in a vehicle to drop the money and left before they went there to pick it.

Jideofor said: “When we went to kidnap Okonjo-Iweala’s mother in the palace, we were eight – Peter, Buba, Mohammed, Olopa, Idowu, Idowu’s driver and Ifeanyi and I. Four of us carried guns; I carried AK47 rifle. It was a smooth job.”

On how they shared the ransom, he said: “Victor got N700,000 as an insider who brought the job; Chuks, N500,000; Ifeanyi, N1 million; Mike, N400,000; Peter, N2 million; the late Idowu who was shot dead by the police in Benin, N2 million; Mohammed, N2 million; I got N2 million, Olopa, N1 million; another Buba, N300,000; Chiboy, N250,000; our armourer, Ibrahim, N50,000, and Endurance, N250,000.

Onochie, who said he was a security guard at the Delta State Polytechnic, and a relation of Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, added: “Chuks lured me into kidnapping through my girl friend, Joy, who was doing her Industrial Attachment (IT) at Adanson Hotel, Ogwashi-Uku. He told me that one job brought him to Ogwashi-Uku and I asked him for the type of job. He said he wanted to carry somebody and he asked about my auntie, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Mrs Edna Mojekwu. I replied him that I had spent five years as security man in the institution and that the woman was merely managing herself. I said it would be better for us to look for another victim. I then suggested the mother of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. We then started thinking on how to carry the woman.”

Chuks, he said, then asked him how they would accomplish the ploy and he suggested that they presented their NYSC certificates to Mama Okonjo-Iweala, giving the impression that they wanted the ex-minister to get them jobs.

He said an argument ensued when they initially planned to go to the palace, leading to the postponement of the operation. Two weeks later, on Sunday morning, they stormed the palace in two cars.

“I carried Chuks on motorcycle to Azagba-Ogwashi-Uku Road and Chuks came down close to African House. After discussing with them, Chuks entered my motorcycle and we went back through School Road to Azagba. Jideofor and his men then went for the job at Obi’s palace while I went back to my house. I and Chuks later went back to Ogbeofuu, but before reaching there they had carried the woman,” said Onochie.

“That day,” he added: “Mama came down to give drinks to workers renovating the palace. When they entered and climbed up, they did not see her, but were told that she was downstairs, unknown to the workers that they were kidnappers. They told the woman that they belonged to the Special Force from the Presidency; that they were there to arrest her because of the money her daughter, Ngozi embezzled. They did not give me a dime after the operation.”

Ojeabulu, a Higher National Diploma (HND) student of Agriculture, said: “My role was to take care of victim in the bush. Jideofor would bring food every day. Mama Okonjo-Iweala was kept in a bush in Kwale, just 30-minute drive from the palace and Delta police did not know.”

Endurance, who said he was the gang’s driver carrying victims in their operational car, added: “I studied accountancy in Delta State University. My first work was to carry a woman to Nkuzu Village in Iseluku area of Delta State. My second job was Okonjo-Iweala’s mother. They gave me N250,000.”

On how they got rifles for their operations, Jideofor said, it was Buba who bought them from the Onitsha main market at N400,000 each. The seller, he said, sold cotton as a cover-up and would not sell weapons to unknown customers.

Those still at large, Buba said, included Peter, who allegedly killed their last victim, simply identified as Mrs Regina Obi-Dainty, before they were arrested by the SARS operatives alongside Olopa, now in prison custody. Buba’s driver, and Idowu, who they said, was killed by policemen during a cross-fire in their den in Benin, Edo State.

Narrating how they carried out the two operations tagged, “National Assignment,” in which they killed Mrs Regina Obi-Dainty, the mother of Dankwa, a popular businessman, Jideofor said: “I am a businessman based in Port Harcourt; I used to buy goods from Mandilas, Lagos. I have led kidnap operations five times.”

“The first victim, a woman at Asaba, was brought by one boy and we got N7 million. The second, a man, was brought by Buhari in the same Asaba and we got N6.4 million. The third was brought by Chuks, also in Asaba. The victim was Chuks’ uncle and we got N3.2 million. The fourth was Okonjo-Iweala’s mother and we got N13 million. The deal was brought by Chuks, Ifeanyi and Victor. The fifth one is the one Peter killed – Mrs Regina Obi-Dainty – claiming that he did it to revenge his brother’s killing by the police.”

Jideofor told The Nation that he was introduced into kidnapping by a friend called Kalous in Asaba, adding that Kalous was spending money like a cocaine baron before he revealed the source of his wealth to him. He said he had only one car, adding that he invested all his money in boutique business.

He said: “On the other operation in which Mrs Regina Obi-Dainty was killed, I brought the job because her son, Mr. Dankwa is my brother, but he was very stingy with money.”

Chukwuma, said: “I graduated from Ambrose Ali University in 2007. I studied Accountancy and I did my Youth Service at Idah, Kogi State in 2008/2009. I later went back to my village to search for job. When I could not secure job, I went to Lagos to meet my sister, Mrs Ijeoma Iwegbu. One day, I went home – Ogwashi-Uku – to see my girl-friend, Uju. There I met Victor Chiejina.

“As we were chatting and drinking, Victor said he had one kidnap job but did not want to involve local people from the village. I then told him that I knew one Ifeanyi (now in prison for being in possession of Indian hemp). Ifeanyi said he would contact Jideofor. They did not want me to participate. They only told me that they had carried the Mama Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. I was not given a kobo after the job.

“They collected N2 million from the late Mrs. Regina Obi-Dainty’s son and did not give me a kobo. I did not know that they shot the woman dead. I told them to pay into my sister’s bank account. When she went to withdraw the N300,000, she was arrested and they used her to track me down. They arrested me when I went to collect the money my sister withdrew from bank, not knowing that she was with SARS men.”

Buhari, who claimed to be a security man in Asaba, said he got N250,000, while Hassan said he only got N30,000.

Manko said yesterday: “Sequel to the arrest of one Chiejina Onochie and Chukwuma Okoh on March 27, at about 100hours by men of the Special Investigations Bureau (SIB), Lagos State Police Command, and their subsequent confessions that they gave the information that led to the kidnap of the mother of the present Minister of Finance, Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in Delta State among many other kidnappings, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, CP Umar Abubakar Manko, directed O/C SARS Ikeja, SP Abba Kyari to go after the kidnappers, especially Jideofor, the gang leader.

“On the strength of this, O/C SARS expanded his tracking network and deployed three SARS Decoy Teams to Delta, Edo and Rivers states which eventually led to the arrest of one Jideofor Ogbue aka Marvelous, the gang leader of the deadly kidnappers, at his hideout in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on April 2. Also five more members of his gang were arrested viz: Michael Ojeabulu, Endurance Oke, Ibrahim Abubakar, Buhari Hamadora and Hassan Oseni at different locations in Edo, Enugu, Delta and Anambra states.

“They confessed to the kidnapping of the mother of Nigerian Finance Minister and collected N13 million ransom and many other kidnappings, including the most recent, where the victim, an elderly woman, Mrs. Regina Obi-Dainty, was killed by the kidnappers after collecting N2 million ransom. Jideofor was arrested in Port Harcourt after he had perfected plans to proceed to Awka, Anambra State.”

Manko added: “There is no hiding place for any criminal in Lagos no matter where he runs to.”

  • Pipeline explosion: Vandals shoot at rescuers

Pipeline explosion: Vandals shoot at rescuers

Fire is still raging at Ijeododo in Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State where a pipeline exploded on Monday night.

Fire fighters are said to be finding it difficult to access the scene because of the thick forest.

Rescue operations were initially stalled by vandals who shot at a team comprising the police and officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

NEMA Director-General Ibrahim Farinloye, who was at the scene said the explosion occurred at about 11pm on Monday.

Rescue operations, he said, began yesterday because it was late and dark on Monday night and the team could not access the scene.

He said: “The pipeline exploded in the dead of the night, but rescue operations could not be carried out and was scheduled to start by 5.30am yesterday.

“But the scheduled rescue operation was botched by the vandals who shot sporadically to scare the team.

“However, NNPC officials were contacted and they shut down the pipelines to limit the damage and further loss of products.

“We could not carry out the rescue operation or an assessment of the devastation because the vandals were shooting at us.

“The rescue team had to take cover because their safety is important. It was when things calmed down that we moved in to do our job.”

By last night, he said clearance of access route to the point has begun, adding that rescue operations has also started.

“At the 7th Avenue end of FESTAC Town, one hundred and fifty (150) pieces of 50 litre-Jerry cans and 46 bags that can contain 150 litres of fuel were recovered. Efforts to reach the Commandant, NSCDC, Obafaiye Shem, failed.

Officials of Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA) said the flowstation had been shut, adding: “the fire should die off soon.”

Some metres away from the fire, thick black smoke enveloped the air.

A resident, Comfort Onwumere, who claimed to have lived in the community for more than 10 years, said: “We did not sleep here yesterday. I ran out with my children without wearing cloth.”

“We had to run because pipelines surround this community and the entire community can be engulfed if care is not taken,” said another resident, Kazeem Olukabi.

They said the fire was not the problem, as it is the third time it is happening this year, adding that the problem is why government will allow vandalism to continue without any resistance.

“The only time vandalism does not happen is during the heavy rains. But the simplest solution is to construct a road from Ijegun to Abule Ado in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area,” said Idowu Taofeek, Ijeododo Community Development Association Chairman.

He appealed to government to heed their requests for the road.

They were thankful that no casualty was recorded.

The fire destroyed all Power Holding Corporation of Nigeria (PHCN)s electricity cables that supply electricity to the area.

“The last time it happened, we had to contribute about N500,000 and that took about five months before we could have light. This time we do not know how long it will take,” Taofeek said.

Officials of the NSCDC, Navy Merchants, and a water truck of the Lagos State Fire Service are at the scene to manage the emergency.

NSCDC’s Lagos Command Public Relations Officer Mrs. Kehinde Bada said no arrest was made.

She said a large quantity of petroleum products were recovered and would be handed over to NNPC after investigations, adding that evacuation of the recovered product has begun.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), said she was yet to get the details of the incident.

  • Ex-Ikeja council boss murdered

    Ex-Ikeja council boss murdered

•Police arrest five  • Governor, Tinubu, others mourn

A former Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Health, Toyin Hamzat, was yesterday killed in Sagamu, Ogun State, by gunmen.

He was said to have been shot in the head at Sabo, Sagamu, shortly after leaving the Sagamu Town Club.

It was learnt that he was on his way to his country home when he was killed.

The killers, sources said, blocked him with a taxi painted in Ogun State colour and shot him at close range.

The hoodlums were said to have left without removing anything from him.

Five persons, including the late Hamzat’s female acquaintance and her husband have been arrested by the police.

Though, the suspects’ identities could not be ascertained, police sources said they are being interrogated at the Homicide Section of Ogun State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Abeokuta.

Spokesperson for the Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Muyiwa Adejobi said the deceased was on his way to an unknown location after seeing his female friend.

He said: “The deceased was shot dead in the presence of the woman. The woman and her husband along with three other persons have been arrested and are presently being interrogated at SCID.”

Adejobi said investigations showed that the woman’s husband owns the vehicle used by the assassins.

He alleged that the man had earlier contracted the assassins, who had been on the trail of the deceased. The hoodlums, he added, caught up with the late Hamzat around Sagamu.

Nothing, he said, was removed from the late Hamzat’s car.

He said: “Investigations showed that the deceased had gone to see the lady unknown to him that the woman’s husband had placed him on close watch for some time. However, investigations would prove the motive behind the killing.”

Hamzat’s remains were buried in Ijebu-Aiyepe yesterday evening.

Reacting to his former aide’s death, Fashola described it as most unfortunate, shocking and heart rending.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Hakeem Bello, he said it was an irony of life that such a man of peace who gave so much in the service of his nation and community could come to such a violent end.

While condoling with the bereaved family and his Ogun State counterpart, Ibikunle Amosun, Fashola described Hamzat’s death as a personal loss to him, Lagos State and the Southwest family of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The Governor prayed Allah to grant the late Hamzat Al-Janah Firdaus; the widow and family the fortitude to bear the loss.

ACN National Leader and former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in a statement, decried the rising insecurity in the country, saying he was shocked by Hamzat’s death.

“Early this morning (Monday, November 19), I received the shocking news of the death of one of our most illustrious sons and progressively-minded politicians, Hon. Toyin Hamzat, former chairman of Ikeja Local Government,” he said.

The statement reads: “Toyin Hamzat’s death, like many that occur daily in similar circumstances, must serve to re-awaken our leaders and security agencies to be more alive to the challenges of securing life and property. The insecurity on our roads and in our homes is appalling. Our lives are not secure.

“Toyin was a reliable hand and a trusted ambassador of our party. He was faithful in his assignments. I pray for his soul to rest in peace.”

Lagos State lawmakers also condemned the killing. Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly Kolawole Taiwo said the late Hamzat worked assiduously for the state.

The state, he said, had lost a great potential and prayed God to grant the bereaved family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji said he couldn’t sleep when he heard the news, accusing the Federal Government of playing politics with people’s lives.

“The issue of security is not being taking seriously in this country and the Federal Government also plays politics with the security of the country. Many lives have been cut short due to insecurity,” he said.

Chief Whip Rasaq Balogun, representing Surulere Constituency II, said the late Hamzat performed well when he was Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State.

“The late Hamzat contributed to the development of the state and he was one of the chairmen that had no skeleton in his cupboard,” he added.

Another lawmaker, Omowunmi Olatunji-Edet, urged the government to take security seriously, saying: “I am sad by his death because he was an easy going person and a party faithful.”

  • Lagosians cry out as fuel scarcity bites harder

Lagosians cry out as fuel scarcity bites harder

A typical day in the city of Lagos is one with a lot of hustle and bustle, noise, and endless traffic. Lagosians are always whining about the irritating condition of traffic in the city. Well, that’s a typical day, what about a non typical day?

Well, it’s a not a typical day in the city of Lagos anymore, as fuel price takes a hike. The welfare of individuals are terribly affected, as well as businesses.

“It’s been so crazy, for like a month now I’ve not taken my car out. My full tank is normally N6, 000, now that N6, 000k only gets me 40litres. I have been taking BRT to work and it’s telling on my health because it’s not what I’m used to. The price of everything goes up due to the fuel hike.” Laments Pekun, a Lagosian. “I get home really late. My sleep is short, plus transportation fare is double the normal price. I can’t save much anymore,” he added.

I caught up with Abel, a student of UNILAG on a bus to Bariga. When asked what his experience had been so far with the current fuel hike, he replied, “Oh!..simple. Increased transport fares on buses and bikes. It has been depressing going out. And then Fashola had to ban bikes.

Well, other Lagosians didn’t keep their replies that simple when the same question was thrown at them. They were furious about the present predicament of the nation, and had a lot of criticism for the government as well as the citizens.

“Well for me, I think Nigerians are to be blamed. If we had allowed the removal of subsidy then, the government would at this time, have no excuse for not providing the commodity. But now, we have fuel selling for as much as N130 in some parts of the country, what’s the difference between N130 and N141?

We all get comfortable easily in this country… We never follow any agitation to a fruitful end. Once we make noise a few days, we just shrink into our shells and move on with the status quo,” said Hezekiah, a public relation consultant.

He continued, “Jonathan will not do everything for us, it’s high time we started thinking of alternative energy. That’s what most countries are doing now. Everything is not done by the government, private sector handles all these research and sells their theories to government. We in Nigeria will sit down and wait for government to research for us. An incompetent government for that matter.”

Well, what more can possibly be said of a country which cannot harness its own resources adequately. We own crude, yet it is a scarce and expensive commodity for us. What a shame! Speaking from personal experience and observation, the traffic in the city of Lagos is worse than ever. I spent an hour in traffic on my way to work yesterday. Going back home was worse, not to mention, the bus fare was twice its normal sum.

Filling stations were packed jam. And one could say the queue was on a standstill. It was both a pathetic and annoying sight. People who can’t afford the increased fare, has resorted to trekking. Let’s face it, it’s not like salaries were increased. So, at the end of the day, it’s a lose – lose situation for the Nigerian citizen. When will all this end? If ever it will.

  • ‘Okada riders damage 42 govt buses in Lagos protests’

‘Okada riders damage 42 govt buses in Lagos protests’

IT was time yesterday for government agencies in Lagos to count their losses after Monday’s protest by commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders.

The protest also continued yesterday in some parts of the metropolis.

The riders, in their hundreds marched on Alagbado and Alakuko, outskirts of Lagos, accusing the police of shooting one of their colleagues.

The atmosphere was tense. The dead motorcyclist was identified as Alagede. He was allegedly shot by a policeman attached to the Alakuko Division.

The incident occurred at Kollington bus-stop on the Abeokuta Expressway. The veracity of the claim could nt be confirmed at press time.

The protesters threatened to burn down the Alakuko police station, if the officer was not produced.

As of the time of this report, they have vandalised a LAGBus and a bonfire was made at Alagbado Bus stop, opposite AIT road.

An eyewitness told The Nation that the LAGBus was stopped at Kollington Bus stop, Alagbado and passengers were forced to alight.

The management of LAGBUS Assets Management Ltd. said 37 of its buses were damaged.

The company is one of the operators of buses using the dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane in the metropolis.

Another operator, the Lagos Metropilitan Area Transport (LAMATA) said five of its buses were vandalised.

Managing Director of LAGBUS, Mr. Babatude Disu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that despite the damage, no passenger was injured.

Disu said the company was still taking stock.

Mr Kolawole Ojelabi, the External Relations Specialist of LAMATA said: “Although commuters were stranded at our bus stations because ticketers were not on ground, we had to begin operation immediately normalcy returned in order not to increase people’s hardship.”

Meanwhile, those who spoke with NAN condemned the action of the motorcyclists.

Mr Oladele Banjo, a civil servant who resides at Sango and works at Ikoyi, said he had to trek from Ikoyi to CMS because the few buses on the road on Monday were held up in traffic.

Another civil servant ,Mrs Ibukun Adegbesan, condemned the act, saying it was unlawful for certain people to hold the state to ransom for their selfish reason.

“The law is operating and commercial motorcyclists have to abide by it, after all some states have enforced the law and yet heads did not roll. A banker, Mr Ralph Edet, said the vandalism was a foolish way of reacting because the buses were for the masses.

“Nigerians should learn not to destroy government property as a way of showing their grievances because it causes a setback to the economy,” Edet said.

NAN reports that due to the protest, most commuters were stranded while others had to take a long walk to get to their destinations.

NAN also reports that the hardship continued on Tuesday morning as many passengers were stranded while other commercial bus operators hiked their fares.

  • Robbers kill ASP, Inspector in Lagos

Robbers kill ASP, Inspector in Lagos

    •Police parades 130 hoodlums

An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and an Inspector fell yesterday under robbers’ bullets in new Oko-Oba, Agege, a Lagos suburb. The Police Command claimed last night that two robbers were also killed.

The officers reportedly displayed rare bravery as they engaged the robbers despite their superior firepower.

It was gathered that four policemen were on patrol around 2am when they sighted; a Hilux pick-up and two Toyota Sienna buses which they mistook for their Area Commander’s.

Police sources said they parked as a mark of honour for their presumed boss, only to be at from the vehicles.

The ASP and the Inspector, who were said to have taken cover behind the patrol van, returned fire.

Source said the robbers hit the ASP in the leg and he fell down and the robbers riddled his body with bullets.

The Inspector was also gunned down; the others, a Sergeant and a Corporal, escaped.

The Nation learnt that a reinforcement arrived at the scene after the robbers had fled.

Another version of the incident said the patrol team was on its way to respond to a distress call when the bandits, who were in three vehicles, opened fire on them at Paying Junction near Olaniyi street.

Police spokesperson Ngozi Braide confirmed the death of the police officers, adding that two of the robbers were also killed. The command has arrested 130 suspected members of a robbery syndicate known as “One Million Boys.”

A few weeks ago, residents of Ajegunle sent a distress call to the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, on the gang, which they claimed has been terrorising the suburb.

The suspects were brought into the Command Headquarters in a Black Maria and two commercial vehicles.

Weapons recovered from them included five live ammunition, two double barrel guns, and 10 machetes.

Parading the suspects, Manko said their arrest was the fulfillment of his promise to get them.

Their arrest, he said, followed a raid of night clubs, a hotel, and Boundary in Ajegunle. He said a bag of weed suspected to be Indian hemp, one pistol, and a gun accessory were recovered. Manko assured the residents that the police would not relent until all the hoodlums are flushed out.

Some of the suspects claimed the “real armed robbers” ran away during the raid, denying that they are not members of the notorious gang.

A suspect, Onyekachi Amaechi, said the gun recovered from his compound belongs to a gang member he identified as Sanni. He said Sanni kept the gun there while on the run. According to him, residents that do not have “reasonable amount” risk torture, maiming, and raping by the gang.

Emmanuel Monday, 17, and Jude Ifegun 18, both residents of Ladiga Street, denied being members of the gang. They claimed they were arrested because they kept late night.

  • Community laments incessant flooding

    Community laments incessant flooding

    •Govt: help on the way

FOR residents of Ifelodun Street in Dopemu, Agege, a Lagos suburb, whenever it rains, it is a nightmare.
Their houses and streets are usually flooded and properties destroyed.
This is what they experience every year.  They urged  the government to intervene after taking our reporter round the area yesterday.
The Chairman, Dopemu Community Development Association (DCDA), Revd. Adetunji Fagbemi, and other members of Ifelodun Street Landlords Association, said the area should be declared a disaster zone, adding that help “should urgently be extended to the area to address the plight of the people presently living there to prevent any disaster.”
Fagbemi said: “For the umpteenth time, we are appealing to the Lagos State Government to come to the aid of the people of Ifelodun Street, Dopemu by completing the canal that seemed to have been abandoned for a very long time, leading to a yearly nightmare for the residents who have been at the receiving end of heavy flooding in their area.”
He blamed the flood on the abandoned canal.
According to him, the canal which came to an abrupt  end near a pharmacy should have been channelled to link Valley Estate, by Cement Bus Stop on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, but it was abandoned, leaving the people to bear the brunt.
He said while the canal which used to be an earth canal was cleaned and cemented upland  from Oko-Oba and Orile-Agege area few years ago, it was abandoned at Ifelodun Street only to be continued at Cement Bus Stop.
“The result has been that all the water coming from Ogba, Oko-Oba, Pen-Cinema, Oke-Koto, and Orile-Agege end up flooding the Ifelodun area, with all houses in the area usually submerged any time it rains,” Fagbemi said.
He said though no lives have been lost to the flood, the challenge of climate change and the prediction of an intense rainfall by the Nigeria Meteorological Institute (NIMET), have compelled the people to again raise the alarm that the whole area might be under threat if the flood is not checked.
He said the street, which is an alternative road that motorists could take to bypass the busy Dopemu Bridge in getting to the Abeokuta Expressway, by Iyana Dopemu, has become impassable because of the collateral damage done  flood in the past.
Another resident  urged the government to alleviate the sufferings of the residents.
“You need to see the apprehension on the faces of residents any time rain threatens to fall. The entire road would become impassable and accessing their homes would be an uphill task for them. Sadly, I grew up to see this place like this, and I can say nothing has changed in the past 25 years that I have lived in this area.
