Lawmaker hails Otu on Calabar carnival

Cross River State House of Assembly Chief Whip, Hilary Bisong, has attributed the economic relevance of Carnival Calabar to the vision of Governor Bassey Otu.

He described the festival’s 20th anniversary as a turning point in state history.

Bisong, who represents Boki II State Constituency, said last year’s carnival had moved beyond entertainment to delivering value for residents, small-scale enterprises (SMEs), and tourism.

The Chief Whip, in a statement entitled “Celebrating Excellence: Governor Otu’s December of Culture, Unity, and Growth,” noted that last December indicated more confidence and purposeful governance in Cross River.

The festival, the lawmaker continued, reflected a move by the Otu administration to reposition culture as a driver of enterprise and development, reinforcing the state’s status as Nigeria’s leading cultural and tourism destination.

Bisong said visible infrastructure upgrades, enhanced security arrangements, and efficient coordination throughout the celebration were indicators of planning and leadership that prioritised both visitor experience and local participation.

He described the 32-day anniversary as historic, highlighting vibrant performances by carnival bands, expanded cultural showcases, and improved hospitality services that boosted economic activities across the state.

The lawmaker praised Otu for inviting former governors to the carnival, saying this was a step in the right direction.

“It is symbolic of continuity and shared ownership of the state’s flagship cultural event,” he added.

Besides, Bisong said the financial impact of the carnival was clear, as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) recorded a boost in patronage.

He noted that artisans gained visibility, hotels had high rates, while thousands of temporary and indirect jobs were created.

He added that Carnival Calabar 2025 demonstrated the potential of culture to catalyze growth, empowerment, and social cohesion, adding that the festival has evolved into a great asset under Otu.

AIG Kwaimo debunks claim police buy uniforms, warns officers against indiscipline

The newly deployed Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 12, Vungmoh SM Kwaimo, has dismissed assertions that personnel of the Nigeria Police Force purchase their uniforms, describing such claims as misinformation rooted in ignorance.

Kwaimo, who now supervises the Bauchi and Gombe State Police Commands, stated that police uniforms are centrally produced and issued directly to officers, adding that no member of the Force is required to procure his own kit.

“We discovered that people who don’t know are engaging in nonsense talk that the police buy uniforms. The police do not buy uniforms. Policemen are issued uniforms,” he said.

He explained that uniforms are provided for all officers and distributed periodically, noting that store officers across commands are routinely invited to Abuja to collect supplies.

“What are they producing uniforms for, if not for everybody? Every time there is a distribution, officers in charge of stores are invited to Abuja to come and take,” he added.

Kwaimo recounted that during his tenure as Commissioner of Police, Railway Command, Ebute Meta, officers had gone three years without receiving uniforms until he intervened to ensure they obtained their rightful allocation.

“Just before I left Ebute Meta, for three years they had not been coming to Abuja. I was able to get uniforms for them. We must portray the image of the Force as an amiable one,” he said.

The AIG made these remarks shortly after assuming duty on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, as the 31st AIG of Zone 12, taking over from AIG Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, who retired upon reaching the statutory age.

Addressing officers of the zone, Kwaimo vowed that his administration would not tolerate indiscipline, corruption, slackness, or absenteeism.

“I do not condone officers leaving their place of duty to engage in illegal activities. It will not be tolerated,” he stated, emphasising that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, maintains zero tolerance for bribery and corruption.

He further underscored the importance of grooming and smart appearance, urging officers to dress properly and conduct themselves professionally to enhance public confidence.

“There are times when policemen appear shabby. Every year, uniforms are distributed, yet you still see officers not dressing smartly. This must change,” he said.

Kwaimo also stressed the need for effective supervision, adding that senior officers must guide and monitor junior personnel to uphold discipline and morale within the Force.

Diri orders mandatory health screening for cabinet after deputy governor’s death

Following the death of his deputy, Governor Douye Diri has directed all members of the Bayelsa State Executive Council to undergo a compulsory medical check-up.

The governor issued the directive through the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, during an executive council meeting in Yenagoa.

He stressed that public officials operate under demanding schedules, making routine health screening essential to ensure fitness and prevent avoidable fatalities.

Governor Diri said that while death remains an unavoidable reality, individuals can adopt preventive measures to safeguard their well-being and prolong life.

He disclosed that an autopsy on the late deputy governor had been completed, adding that the findings would be released at an appropriate time.

Reiterating his call for restraint, the governor warned against politicising the passing of the state’s number two official. He announced that a burial committee led by the Secretary to the State Government had been constituted, and that the funeral date would be communicated soon.

He said, “We thank everyone who grieved with us and pray that in 2026 we will celebrate and not mourn. All of us must be mindful of our health to prevent avoidable deaths. Members of the State Executive Council should go for a compulsory check-up. This directive must be carried out. I ordered an autopsy, and the result is ready. We will make it public at the right time. While we were mourning, some people chose to politicise the death of our deputy governor instead of showing compassion.”

At the meeting, the Commissioner for Health presented an award plaque and a dummy cheque of $400,000 won by Bayelsa State as first runner-up in the Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge for the South-South region. The competition is supported by UNICEF, the Dangote Group, and other international partners.

Governor Diri described the achievement as uplifting, noting that the administration’s investments in health were yielding tangible outcomes.

He added, “This is the best award we have received, and it comes with a financial reward. It reflects the exceptional performance of the Commissioner for Health. When you work hard, results follow.”

Prof. Brisibe credited the state’s recognition to the governor’s sustained commitment to strengthening the health sector.

He also presented to the governor the Distinguished Leadership Award in Governance in recognition of his outstanding performance and contribution to the growth of the National Association of Nurses and Midwives in Bayelsa and Nigeria.

  • Ex-NBA official killed in Abuja vehicle attack

Ex-NBA official killed in Abuja vehicle attack

A lawyer and former Treasurer of the Abuja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chigbo Princess Mediatrix, has been reported dead.

According to an online platform, barristerng.com, her lifeless body was discovered by the roadside along the Kubwa expressway within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The platform said the discovery was made by a commuter heading to work, who noticed the body lying near the Dawaki area, opposite Gwarimpa Estate.

According to the platform, “preliminary findings suggest that the deceased may have fallen victim to suspected mobile armed robbers, popularly known as ‘one chance’ operators, who are notorious for targeting unsuspecting commuters within the Federal Capital Territory.

“Eyewitness accounts indicate that the circumstances surrounding her death point to a violent encounter.

“A handbag believed to belong to the deceased was found some distance away from her body, reinforcing suspicions that she may have been robbed and possibly pushed out of a moving vehicle.

“The incident has sent shockwaves across the legal community and the wider public, once again drawing attention to the persistent security threats faced by residents and commuters on major highways in Abuja.

The Nigeria Police Force, Dawaki Division, has been duly notified and has since taken custody of the body. Investigations into the cause and circumstances of her death are expected to commence immediately.

“The police have appealed to members of the public who may know the deceased or her family to come forward. Relatives are advised to contact the Nigeria Police Force, Dawaki Division, located opposite Gwarimpa Estate along the Kubwa Expressway, Abuja, for identification and further information.”

Meanwhile, a group, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has expressed displeasure over the continuous daring operations being carried out by “one-chance armed robbers in the FCT.”

HURIWA said the development indicates a clear absence of any sort of preventive security strategy and a strange lack of political and competent leadership in the nation’s capital.

HURIWA said the federal government did not have to wait for these killings of citizens to continue unabated before a major political decision was made to appoint a much more focused, committed, non-partisan patriotic technocrat to provide good governance, security of lives and property, sustainable development, and tranquillity to the good people of the FCT.

It described the recent killing of two women in the FCT, including a nurse, by gangs of armed one-chance robbers as clear signs that those appointed to provide good governance, stability, and security of lives and property of the residents and citizens of the FCT are engaged in other external activities unrelated to the core objectives of the essence of their appointments by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The group recalled that the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives Federal Health Institutions Sector on Tuesday expressed heartbreak over the killing of Nurse Chinemerem Chukwumeziem of the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja.

HURIWA stated that the killing of this Nurse and many others could have been prevented if the political authorities in the FCT were made up of persons of dedicated service and by non-political administrators committed to delivering selfless services to citizens of Nigeria resident and engaging in lawful business activities in the FCT.

It added, “But, as it has become notorious, those assigned with the onerous task of protecting the lives and property of Abuja residents are totally distracted by the politics of the next year’s general election, thereby neglecting their primary responsibility as enshrined in the constitution of Nigeria.”

The group recalled that it was not just one person but indeed two women who were found dead in separate locations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in incidents suspected to be linked to the activities of notorious “one chance” criminal gangs operating within Nigeria’s capital.

One of the victims, Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem, was a nurse with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, whose killing subsequently drew condemnation from the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), FCT Council.

The second victim, identified as Princess Ochigbo, was said to be found lying lifeless by the roadside, with indications suggesting she might also have fallen victim to “one chance” hoodlums.

In the statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA urged President Bola Tinubu to appoint Mr. Nyesom Wike as his Director General for his presidential bid for 2027 so that a fresh, competent, totally focused professional administrator and technocrat is appointed to provide the much desired governance standards in the FCT, given that the lives of citizens are no longer safe

The group wonders why the security forces in the FCT seemed to have gone to sleep and have proved to be incapable or unwilling to map out an effective preventive security strategy to curb the incessant cases of bloody attacks by one chance armed robbers in the FCT.

The group said the government should give the citizens the right and licences to carry military-grade AK-49 guns to protect themselves because the right to self-defence is constitutionally imperative and indeed provided for in Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution under Section 33, which is binding and enforceable.

HURIWA recalled that globally, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) of 1948 is essentially, is the foundation and the fundamental of contemporary human rights law, including the right to life.

It added that in Nigeria, the right to life as a constitutionally guaranteed right is protected under Section 33 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended). While Section 33 strongly affirms the sanctity of life, its subsections 2(a) (b)(c) provide certain exceptions which legal scholars say pose formidable challenges to the absolute nature of this right.

HURIWA argued that since the FCT administration has demonstrated a clear absence of any sort of preventive security strategy to curb the constant killings of residents by one chance robbers and other armed criminal non-state actors, the president should direct that citizens be granted the legal permits to bear arms for self-defence.

Several killed in attacks on associates of late politician

A wave of violent attacks targeting individuals connected to the late Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, Topmost Ayinde, has resulted in multiple deaths across Ekiti, Osun and Cross River states, raising growing concerns about insecurity and possible targeted killings.

Security agencies in the affected states say the motive behind the attacks remains unclear. Investigations are ongoing, and as of the time of filing this report, no arrests have been made.

Former Aide and Family Attacked in Ekiti

On January 2, 2026, Jide, a former personal assistant to the late politician, was reportedly abducted alongside his wife and their twin sons by unknown gunmen in Ekiti State, according to a family source.

The attackers allegedly stormed the family residence and demanded information about Ayomide, the son of the late Topmost Ayinde, who is believed to be residing in the United Kingdom. Jide’s uncle said the gunmen showed photographs of Ayomide and repeatedly demanded to know his whereabouts.

Jide reportedly told the assailants that he had lost contact with Ayomide and had no knowledge of his location.

During the attack, one of the twin boys was reportedly killed, while Jide’s wife was also shot dead. The assailants allegedly accused Jide of hiding information.

“They were determined to harm anyone connected to the family,” the uncle said, adding that the family had previously reported threats to security agencies before relocating to Ekiti.

The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation had been launched. No arrests have been recorded.

    Fatal Shooting in Calabar

After escaping the attack, Jide reportedly relocated to Calabar, Cross River State, where he contacted his uncle to recount the abduction and the killing of his wife and child.

However, two days later, he was shot dead by unknown assailants in Calabar. An eyewitness said a man on a motorcycle approached Jide and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the killing and said investigations are ongoing. No suspects have been apprehended.

    Earlier Killings in Osun

The recent incidents follow an earlier attack on November 21, 2024, in Ilesa, Osun State, during which the wife and daughter of Topmost Ayinde were killed at their market stall.

Police authorities confirmed the incident at the time and said investigations had been opened. No arrests have since been announced.

    Growing public concern

Residents across the three states have expressed growing concern over the repeated violence and the lack of arrests. Many have called on security agencies to intensify efforts to uncover the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Although no official connection has been established between the incidents, police authorities maintain that all cases remain under investigation.

Lagos police identify officers accused of extorting N3.3m from couple

Lagos State Police Command has identified the officers attached to the Area H Police Command, Ogudu, who were accused of extorting $2,000 (about N3.33 million) from a couple they allegedly wrongfully arrested in December 2025.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed this in her X handle, adding that the officials have been brought to the Command Headquarters for quizzing.

The alleged extortion came to public attention after details of the incident surfaced on X.

According to the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), a friend of the couple, identified as Abiodun Alabi (not real name), said the incident occurred in the early hours of December 18, last year. The couple was reportedly travelling out of Lagos when they were stopped by police officers.

Alabi said the officers allegedly profiled the man, seized his phones and took him and his wife to the Ogudu Police Station. He claimed the woman, who was pregnant at the time, was made to sit outside while the man was taken inside and compelled to write an incriminating statement without a lawyer.

He further alleged that the officers initially demanded $5,000 in USDT but later agreed to collect $2,000 after negotiations. The money was reportedly transferred to a wallet address provided by the officers, after which all traces of the transaction were allegedly deleted.

Following the incident, Alabi said he petitioned the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU), which linked him to the Station Officer at Area H Command, Olumide Jegede. A meeting was later arranged at the station on December 23, where the couple reportedly identified some of the officers involved.

Alabi alleged that the officers attempted to justify their actions and later claimed the money had been shared among several personnel. As a result, they allegedly offered a partial refund.

FIJ said N2.2 million has so far been returned to the victims.

Calls placed to SP Adebisi, to confirm if the complainant had reported to the command headquarters were not answered as of press time.

The nursing mother, whose name is still yet to be known, and her child were seized while on their way to the market.

Also, a veteran photojournalist, Malam Umar Usman Iyale, has been abducted by bandits in Danhonu II community, Millennium City, in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Umar, a retired staff member of Africa Independent Television (AIT), Kaduna Station, and formerly of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Kaduna, was taken from his residence about 9:00pm on Monday, according to sources.

The Ondo incident has sparked fear among residents who have expressed concerns over the insecurity on rural roads in Akoko.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police Jimoh Abayomi, said he could not confirm the incident, describing the available information as sketchy.

However, a close relative of the victims, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the abduction.

Residents said the gunmen carried out the operation quietly but in a coordinated manner, gaining access to the compound at a time when some members of the journalist’s family were yet to return home.
