NBA seeks urgent police action over missing lawyer

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, has called for urgent intervention by security agencies to secure the safe return of its member, Mr. Ugwuoke Henry Onyebuchi.

The missing lawyer, popularly known as “Odogwu Lawyer,” was last seen at about 9 pm on December 10 in Lagos, and his whereabouts have remained unknown since then.

NBA, in a statement by the Chairman, Uchenna Ogunedo Akingbade, said a formal complaint has been lodged at the Ilasan Police Station, where preliminary investigations are ongoing.

It added that the case has also been formally escalated to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for further action.

Describing the development as extremely troubling, the NBA Lagos noted that the disappearance of a legal practitioner raises serious concerns not only about the personal safety of the missing lawyer, but also about the broader issue of security and the protection of members of the legal profession and Nigerian citizens at large.

“In light of the current security realities in the country, this development is extremely disturbing,” the statement said.

Stressing that cases of missing persons require swift and decisive action, the Branch called on the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to urgently intervene by deploying all necessary investigative resources to determine Mr. Onyebuchi’s whereabouts and ensure his safe recovery.

It warned that with each passing day without progress, the chances of a safe outcome could diminish, and therefore urged relevant authorities to treat the matter with the urgency, seriousness, and priority it deserves.

NBA Lagos further assured that it stands ready to cooperate fully with security agencies in the investigation and would continue to monitor developments closely until the matter is resolved.

The Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District V, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, has advised mothers and caregivers to fully utilise the Primary Health Care Centre (PHC) facilities provided by the Lagos State Government, noting that the centres are strategically established to ensure accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services at the grassroots level.

This statement was made recently during a medical outreach programme organised by the Lagos State Health District V for residents of ibeshe riverine area of Oriade LCDA.

  • Lagos Island, Red Cross launch fire safety awareness

Lagos Island, Red Cross launch fire safety awareness

The Lagos Island Local Government has partnered with the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Lagos State Branch, to intensify fire safety awareness across the council area, as part of efforts to curb recurring fire disasters that have led to loss of lives and properties.

Vice Chairman of Lagos Island Local Government, Mr. Arulai Folami, disclosed that the fire safety sensitisation exercise is one of the council’s cardinal programmes aimed at proactive disaster management.

According to Folami, the local government resolved not to wait for disasters to occur before responding, hence the decision to organise a Fire Safety Walk to educate residents, traders, and market women on preventive measures.

“We don’t want to wait until disaster happens before we come in. That is why we are taking a bold initiative to sensitise residents and market women on the do’s and don’ts of fire safety to avoid fire outbreaks on Lagos Island,” he said.

He recalled past fire incidents on Lagos Island that resulted in loss of lives and destruction of properties, stressing that the council has adopted community sensitisation as a key emergency management strategy.

“One of our strategies is to go out there and educate the people on the importance of having fire extinguishers in their homes, shops, and even fire boards. These can serve as the first line of response before the fire service arrives,” Folami added.

The vice chairman expressed optimism that the campaign would significantly reduce losses, noting that many market women have already begun purchasing fire extinguishers for their shops.

“Our chairman is very proactive, and we already have the cooperation of market women. We want other markets on Lagos Island to take a cue from this so that the huge losses to fire disasters can be avoided,” he said.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Lagos State Branch, Mrs. Adebola Kolawole, said fire outbreaks have become frequent on Lagos Island, often caused by carelessness, heat, and other human factors.

She described the local government as a critical stakeholder in disaster management, noting that Red Cross officials often encounter council representatives at disaster sites.

“This partnership has been ongoing for eight years, and successive chairmen and executives have supported us. This year, the local government has shown even stronger commitment by supporting us financially and physically,” Kolawole said.

She urged other local governments in Lagos State to emulate Lagos Island’s example by identifying disaster-prone areas within their jurisdictions and working with the Red Cross to prevent emergencies.

“Beyond fire outbreaks, we have building collapses, explosions, and pipeline vandalism in other areas. If all local governments take responsibility, it will help Lagos State as a whole,” she added.

The Branch Communication Officer of the NRCS, Lagos State Branch, Mr. Olushola Tejuosho, noted that fire disasters remain a global threat, citing major incidents in Nigeria and abroad.

“In December 2017, over 1,000 shops were destroyed by fire in Kaduna State, displacing more than 1,000 families. Globally, fires have claimed lives in India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and more recently, Hong Kong,” he said.

Tejuosho added that in Lagos State alone, a fire outbreak last year destroyed 14 buildings at the popular Tom Jones Market on Lagos Island, underscoring the urgent need for prevention through education.

He further called on traders, community members, youth groups, and civil society organisations to support the campaign.

“Fire disasters are preventable. Through education, preparedness, and collective action, we can save lives and protect livelihoods,” he said.

Suspects of Onuwaje’s murder must face trial, says Delta community

Amid claims and counter claims, the people of Ugborodo Community in Warri Southwest Local Government Area of Delta State has insisted that the masterminds of the murder of Emiko Onuwaje must face trial to secure justice for the bereaved family.

They vowed not accept the return of a prominent indigene of the community back home, until the culprits were fished out by the Police to face prosecution.

The leaders of the community made the declaration on Monday during a peaceful protest at Ogidigben in Ugborodo Federated Communities of Warri Federal Constituency.

Clad in all-black, the aggrieved Ugborodo indigenes, marched through several streets in Ogidigben, singing solemn songs and brandishing leaves.

Addressing reporters, the Vice Chairman of Ugborodo Community Management Committee (UCMC), and spokesman of Ogidigben Community Council of Elders, Austin Ajuremisan, maintained that there was no way justice would come, without bringing the culprit to book.

He said:  “The man (Emiko Onuwaje) killed has children and family. The killing is purely murder, not community differences. When the armed men invaded our community, we thought they were bandits, only to see some of our brothers, claiming to fight for the palace.’’

“We are calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to do the needful. The dead are crying for justice and justice must be served.”

The Eghare-Aja of Ugborodo, Eghare Daniel Uwawah, recalled that  the incident happened  when some Ugborodo indigenes, including the late Emiko Onuwaje, were on their way to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in Ogidigben for a peaceful protest, that they were allegedly attacked, leading to Onuwaje’s death.

Prominent Itsekiri leader, Chief Ayirimi Emami, who was in grief, asserted: “My pipeline surveillance company has written several petitions against the prime suspect, who does illegal bunkering. Whenever you tell him to retrace his footsteps, they will say you are fighting the palace, as if the palace is aiding criminality. Does the palace send people to protest or partake in criminal activities?

“The President is against illegal possession of firearms. Once they find out it’s not Ayiri, nobody wants to act. One of the boys caught has made confessional statements in view of the murder of Emiko Onuwaje.”
