Justice Taiwo Taiwo has recused himself from a suit challenging the qualification of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Taiwo, a judge of the Federal High Court, Abuja, withdrew from the case on Thursday following a petition against him by one of the lawyers in the APC legal team.

The judge decried the attempt by a lawyer to call his integrity to question and maliciously tarnish his image.

He said: “As judges and lawyers in the temple of justice, it is our duty to protect the integrity of the court and that of the judiciary.

“It is disturbing to receive a petition from a party in the suit seeking the transfer of the case; the contents of the said petition are wicked and unsubstantiated.

“It is very disturbing that a counsel will write this petition and even back it with an affidavit.”

CSO identifies 13 councils as potential violence hot spots

    From Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

Ahead of the September 19 governorship election in Edo State, a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Yiaga Africa, has identified 13 local governments where violence is likely to occur.

The Executive Director, Samson Itodo, speaking on Thursday at the unveiling of Yiaga Africa First Pre-Election Observation (PREO) Report, urged security agencies to employ preventive measures to neutralise existing security threats, to enable the electorate exercise their constitutional right to vote in a peaceful and secure environment.

He advocated improved inter-agency collaboration and cooperation to forestall rivalry and unhealthy competition in the management of election security.

Itodo said: “The spate of pre-election violence is escalating: The two dominant parties in the governorship race, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are guilty of violent rhetoric, hate speech, vandalism and violence.

“At a PDP rally in Apana, Etsako West Local Government, clashes between PDP and APC supporters led to attacks and vandalism.

“Based on our observation reports, 13 of the 18 councils are considered as potential hot spots of violence. They include Etsako West, Etsako East, Etsako Central, Owan West and Akoko-Edo in Edo North Senatorial District.

“In Edo South Senatorial District, our reports suggest Oredo, Orhionmwon, Egor, Ovia North East and Ikpoba-Okha. While in Edo Central Senatorial District, Esan Central, Esan North East and Esan West are potential hot spots.

“Given the threat to safety and security in the Edo election, Yiaga Africa urges the federal and state governments to desist from partisan use of the police and security forces to manipulate the electoral process.”

He urged parties and candidates to conduct issue-based campaigns rather than engage in voter inducement and recruitment of thugs and cultists for violence ahead of the election.

  • Oba of Benin to politicians: rein in your thugs

Oba of Benin to politicians: rein in your thugs

    From Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has asked politicians to rein in their “thugs” and refrain from pre-election violence in the run-up to the September 19 governorship election in Edo State.

He urged politicians to give peace a chance, saying occupying a public office should not be a do-or-die affair.

The first-class monarch spoke in his palace yesterday at a parley with the governorship candidates of the 14 parties in the election and other top politicians in the state.

He said he had been having sleepless nights for some days over violence and thuggery in the state.

The two main contenders – Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu – embraced at the Benin palace.

Also in attendance at the peace meeting were Edo Deputy Governor and Obaseki’s running mate Philip Shaibu; APC deputy governorship candidate Mallam Gani Audu; former national chairmen of APC/ex-governors of Edo State, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Adams Oshiomhole.

The Southsouth Zonal Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih; Edo Chairman of APC, Col. David Imuse (rtd.) and his PDP counterpart, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi; among other top politicians, were also at the meeting.

The Oba of Benin said: “Today (yesterday) is a historic and significant day in the history of Benin Kingdom. From the ancient throne of Benin Kingdom, we appreciate your respect and we also respect you. Those who are falling short should respect the tradition of the Benin Kingdom.

“I have noted that Benin’s (Edo State’s) politics has been in the news for quite some time for all the wrong reasons. I have been having sleepless nights for some days. We are all from Edo State. We are not strangers.

“I became so worried when the conflict between Oshiomhole and Obaseki started. I have a personal relationship with almost everybody here (at the palace). I am not sure I will call (Phillip) Shaibu my son again, because of the way he (Shaibu) is going. Shaibu refused to honour his assurances to me. You do not say something to me and you go against it.

“Why do you want lives to be lost by arming thugs, who will later hide the guns? Enough is enough. Let the September 19 governorship election in Edo State be peaceful. Be mature and be proud of Edo State. Do not make Edo State a laughing stock.

Read Also: ‘No alternative to peaceful conduct of Edo, Ondo polls’

“Shaibu, behave yourself. Calm down. I learnt you control thugs. Tell your boys to a ceasefire and drop their arms. Let your boys calm down. Must it be a do-or-die affair? Do not turn Benin into a city of thugs. Do not kill yourselves, because of public office. Stop the shootings. I am very sad about what is happening in Edo State. This is the worst scenario. Let us eschew violence and give peace a chance.”

The eminent monarch said there must be a violence-free environment, ahead of the crucial election, to shame people, who would want to laugh at Edo people.

He said there must be a positive change after the peace meeting, adding that emphasis must be placed on peace and tranquility.

Recalling the genesis of the face-off between Oshiomhole and Obaseki, the Oba of Benin said: “I had some memorable times with Oshiomhole as governor. People were asking me who would take over from Oshiomhole in 2016. I asked Oshiomhole to propose not to impose whom he had in mind as his successor, but he said he was still thinking about it, promising to let me know at the appropriate time.

“Two or three weeks later, Oshiomhole came back to me and said he had thought about it and gave his position with analysis. I will not bother you with the details. He mentioned three aspirants, but he zeroed in on Obaseki. Oshiomhole gave the strongest reasons in the world, why it must be Obaseki and nobody else; particularly that he was then the chairman of his economic team. I was not against Oshiomhole’s choice and the imposition of Obaseki, but I said no word.

“Halfway into my seeing off Oshiomhole that day, he stopped and asked why I said nothing about his choice of Obaseki. I told him I would give my opinion in future. Some royal members of Obaseki’s family and many other persons were against Obaseki’s choice by Oshiomhole. I am keeping some sensitive parts out.

“Again, after three weeks, Oshiomhole came to me, but I said I still had no opinion. I told him that his decision on Obaseki was not a proposal, but an imposition. That was why I had no opinion. Oshiomhole said Obaseki would do much better than him and continue his legacy projects.

“Oshiomhole invited Alhaji Aliko Dangote to speak with me on his choice of Obaseki. Dangote came to Uselu (in Benin) and he spoke with me on Obaseki for over one hour, but I kept quiet. Oshiomhole and Obaseki also visited me in Uselu, but I still kept quiet.

“Since Oshiomhole brought only one governorship aspirant (Obaseki), I had no choice. I knew Obaseki when I was in Atlanta, USA.

“Dangote stood as a guarantor for Obaseki to be of good behaviour and that if Obaseki misbehaved, I should contact him (Dangote). I still kept quiet.

“Oshiomhole and Obaseki were initially very close. What I thought was going to be a smooth ride, turned to unprecedented conflict. I tried to intervene several times and I went to President Muhammadu Buhari over the matter.

“At a point, both of them started avoiding me, but I kept praying for Oshiomhole and Obaseki for God to resolve the problem between them, but it kept deteriorating. Family members can quarrel, but there must be resolution today (yesterday). You are all Benin palace family members.

“I cannot have you fighting. I want to plead with the politicians to sheathe their swords because the international community is watching. We have done traditional prayers to avert violence before, during and after the September 19 governorship election. I am pleading with Edo politicians to control youths and their thugs.

“I do not expect John Odigie-Oyegun to be on either side, but to call both sides to a ceasefire. Enough is enough. Let the election be peaceful. Dan Orbih, please do your best to reduce the temperature in Edo State. Let there be peace and tranquility because everybody is afraid. Show respect to the traditional institution, without lip service, just to get votes.

“Odigie-Oyegun, my in-law, I will hold you responsible, if you do not use your elder-statesmanship status to stop the violence in Edo State.”

The first-class monarch said there was the need for the 14 governorship candidates and their running mates to debate, to sell their manifestos, instead of fighting, while asking the governorship candidates to give him an undertaking that they and their supporters would not engage in violence.

Obaseki said he swore an oath to protect the lives and property of Edo residents, which he noted he would always do, as the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the state.

He said he would try his best to ensure peace.

Shaibu said: “I will do as you (Oba of Benin) have directed, by telling my boys to calm down.”

Ize-Iyamu hailed the monarch for the timely initiative and intervention.

He said he and other APC leaders would speak with their supporters to always give peace a chance, as they had been doing.

Speaking at 12:28 pm, he walked up to Obaseki, whom he described as his elder brother and embraced him.

Orbih said it would be in the interest of the people of Edo State to ensure peace before, during and after the September 19 governorship election.

Oshiomhole said he had been preaching free and fair governorship election, with emphasis to be placed on one man, one vote, without violence.

He described himself as a product of peaceful election, winning in the 18 local governments.

Oshiomhole hailed the Oba of Benin for the peace efforts. Odigie-Oyegun assured the monarch of a peaceful election. The one-time governor said he would continue to speak with all political actors in the state.

Obaseki condoles with Oshiomhole, Ize-Iyamu over crash

    From Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

Governor Godwin Obaseki has condoled with former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the party’s standard-bearer, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, over the accident involving a back-up security vehicle and top chieftains of the APC on Tuesday.

Obaseki, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed that God would grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.

He prayed for quick recovery for the injured

Obaseki said: “I received the news of the accident with shock and commiserate with the former governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the candidate of the APC in the coming governorship election, Ize-Iyamu, over the unfortunate accident involving their security aides and top chieftains of the party in the campaign team.”

APC, Obaseki’s wife trade blame over order to close free medical outreach

    From Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Edo State chapter, and the wife of the governor of Edo State, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, are trading blame over the order to close free medical outreach in the state, for campaign.

Edo APC, on Wednesday in an online statement by the Chairman of its Media Campaign Council,  Prince John Mayaki, condemned the disruption of its ongoing free medical outreach in Edo Central Senatorial District by the police, acting on the instruction of the governor’s wife.

It said the medical outreach, initiated and kicked-off on Tuesday by the wife of APC’s governorship candidate, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, to provide free health screening and other medical services to the people, especially the vulnerable denied access to health care for years, was disrupted in Uromi by policemen deployed by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and the Area Commander of the Uromi Division.

APC alleged that the policemen were acting on the instruction of the wife of Edo governor, who was attending a political event in the area and felt displeased by the complete overshadowing and abandonment of her event by the people, who thronged the free medical outreach.

It condemned the governor’s wife’s  action, declaring that it bordered on arrogation of powers with no constitutional basis, insensitivity to the plight of the people and a cruel prioritisation of political showmanship over the health of the poor and vulnerable, abandoned for four years by her husband, Godwin Obaseki.

APC said: “By directing the police to shut down the free medical outreach, Mrs. Obaseki arrogated unconstitutional powers to herself and sadly displayed the poor attributes, including cruelty, intolerance and insensitivity to the plight of the people that earned the Obaseki administration the infamy of being one of the worst seen in Edo State.

“The cruelty and insensitivity is further magnified by the fact that Mrs. Obaseki ordered the shut down, because she felt slighted that her political event in the area was completely overshadowed by the medical outreach, as the people, men, women and the aged, expectedly chose to cater to their health than attend a vanity political show that holds no value to them.

“To order the closure of a free medical event catering to the poor over petty political concerns, especially vanity showmanship, is cruel and totally condemnable.

“The medical outreach, initiated by Prof.  Ize-Iyamu, was designed to provide care for the poorest of the poor and vulnerable citizens with various health conditions. These people have been abandoned by Governor Obaseki and they live in communities where there are neither doctors nor health centres, because the governor, in his characteristic failure, fell abysmally short of his promise to build 192 primary health centres with just 22 in four years.”

APC also condemned the actions of the governor’s wife in the strongest possible terms, urging Police Commissioner Babatunde Kokumo to rein in on his men to resist carrying out such cruel assignments and insist on the ethics of the profession, no matter who is asking.”

  • APC, PDP disagree over governorship debate

APC, PDP disagree over governorship debate

    From Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

Governor Godwin Obaseki and the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have disagreed over governorship debate.

Edo APC, on Wednesday in an online statement by the Chairman of its Media Campaign Council, Prince John Mayaki, stated that the Nigeria Elections Debate Group was forced to call off its scheduled debate between contenders in the Edo governorship race, after Obaseki announced a sudden pull-out from the debate, citing unpreparedness.

The governor, speaking on Wednesday about the matter at the palace of Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, insisted that he was not invited to the debate.

APC, however, said: “The debate, previously scheduled for September 2, with the candidate of the APC, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, among the first to confirm his attendance, will no longer hold.

“It was the first of debates meant to showcase the contenders, particularly candidates of the two major parties, before the electorate to speak directly about their manifesto and answer difficult questions on their intentions and the viability of their plans for office.

“Obaseki is ashamed of his poor records and he is unable to defend them, without first perfecting his script of half-truths and lies. The governor is terrified of the prospect of being confronted with his failures in four years, hence his cowardly pull-out, on the grounds of lack of preparation.

“Incumbents who performed in office seize any opportunity to showcase their achievements to the people, especially in national debates meant to deepen the democratic culture and offer the electorate a front-row seat at an event where those seeking their votes are made to answer difficult questions on why they are deserving of the office they seek.

“But in the case of Obaseki, having failed in all ramifications, most notably his central promise of creating 200,000 jobs, he is playing hide and seek with organisers of debate events, citing unpreparedness and campaigns.

“The sad truth is that Obaseki is never prepared for anything, including governance. To debate, he needs his thousands of aides, most of whom he hired at the dawn of his forgettable tenure, to help him perfect a script of lies and untruths.

“He (Obaseki) does not have a known or documented manifesto. His comical MEGA (Make Edo Great Again) plan, which in any case is an admittance of failure, was hurriedly put together as a response to the widespread criticisms of his lacklustre campaign and the lack of any documented policy promise. Since the launch they staged where Obaseki mumbled, stuttered and unwittingly betrayed the fact that he was also seeing the paper for the first time, we have not heard anything of it.”

The Edo APC also said that Obaseki knew that he could not spend an hour at a debate without name-calling or be able to speak of his own achievements.

    •PDP chair commiserates with Ize-Iyamu

     Bisi Olaniyi, Benin

PASTOR Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called off his rally at Usen, following a crash.

An accident on Tuesday occurred near Oluku junction, as a trailer ran into the campaign entourage of top chieftains of the APC, killing two policemen. Two others were injured.

A statement signed by the Chairman of the APC Media Campaign Council, Mr. John Mayaki, said the party had suspended the scheduled event, to honour the dead.

On behalf of Ize-Iyamu and the APC, Mayaki condoled with the bereaved families, saying they were not alone in their grief.

He said the party would ameliorate their grief.

The campaign council said the policemen involved in the crash would never be forgotten for their sacrifice.

It urged everyone to pray for the repose of the soul of the dead, adding that they should also pray against the recurrence of such tragedies.

Mr. Victor Oshioke, the media aide to former national chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, last night narrated how his boss narrowly escaped death in the convoy accident, on his way to the party’s campaign venue.

Oshioke said Oshiomhole was on his way to Usen in Ovia Southwest Local Government in continuation of the campaigns of Pastor Ize-Iyamu.

He said in a statement: “Some minutes past 12pm today (yesterday), there was an accident involving the convoy of Comrade Oshiomhole along Benin-Lagos By-pass, before Oluku junction. The convoy was heading for Usen, where Comrade Oshiomhole was expected to appear at a campaign, alongside Pastor Ize-Iyamu, when a trailer driving in the same direction veered off its course, hit the back-up Toyota Hilux carrying seven policemen, forcing it off the road, into the bush and rammed into the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) carrying Comrade Oshiomhole, causing substantial damage.

“We are sad to report that two police personnel in the Toyota Hilux lost their lives, while two others are in critical condition and are receiving treatment at a hospital in Edo State.

“Comrade Oshiomhole and other persons in the convoy, apart from those indicated above, did not sustain any injury.

“It is pertinent to state, without fear of contradiction that the convoy of Comrade Oshiomhole was maintaining legal speed limit when the accident occurred.

“While we pray for the quick recovery of the injured policemen, we extend our condolences to the families of the departed.

“Comrade Oshiomhole has visited the injured policemen in the hospital. He has deployed some of his aides to be on standby at the hospital to ensure that the injured policemen are given the best medical attention possible.”

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi and members of the party in Edo have commiserated with the APC and its governorship candidate, Pastor Ize-Iyamu, over the accident.

They described it as very unfortunate.

Aziegbemi and other members of PDP in a statement by the Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, sympathised with the families of the victims.

They prayed that God would grant the members of the families of the deceased policemen the fortitude to bear the losses and grant the victims eternal rest.
