Kwara flags off digital, coding course for pupils across 50 public schools

Kwara State Government on Tuesday flagged off a Coding and Digital Literacy training programme for at least 50 public primary and junior secondary schools across the state.

The programme was organised by the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Digital and Innovation, Hon. Ishola Kayode.

Flagging off the programme on behalf of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, Senior Adviser and Counsellor to the Governor, Alhaji Sa’adu Salau, said the digital coding initiative was to strengthen the impactful investments of the administration in the education sector.

Salau said the initiative  targets over 150 students in each of the 50 schools for the pilot scheme.

“We are now faced with the reality of the digital revolution. So, what we have done today is to flag-off the training for digital literacy in 50 schools in Kwara State,” he said at the symbolic launch at the Bishop’s Smith Junior Secondary School Ilorin.

“It is our expectation that with the foundation laying of a digital society for this generation, the children of Kwara State would not lag behind among their counterparts globally.”

Other public schools in the capital city where the pilot scheme launched included Queen Elizabeth School, Ilorin Grammar School, and Sheikh Alimi L.G.E.A Primary school.

Hon. Ishola, for his part, said the programme was to ensure that public school students are not lagging behind in the digital world.

“They should be digitally literate, they should be able to solve problems in their communities because the problems can be solved with the knowledge of technology and if you don’t have that knowledge, you can’t actually solve the problems,” he said.

“The selection of 50 schools was to serve as a pilot scheme. 15 schools are selected from Kwara Central, 13 from North, while 22 are picked from the southern part of the state.”

He said the programme will be expanded after the data driven assessment.

Principal of Bishop’s Smith College (Junior Session), Mrs Akanbi Janet Ayoola, said the project is one of the best decisions the Governor has taken in the era where information Technology and artificial intelligence have become a necessity of life.

Opadili Dorcas Boluwatife and Akinola Kolawole Abdulrahman, among other students who spoke at the ceremony, thanked the state government for the initiative.

They promised to make good use of the opportunity that they said would enable them to compete favourably with their counterparts globally in the digital revolution.

MacPherson University to graduate 24 First Class, 116 Second class, others

MacPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State, is set to graduate a total of 281 students at its combined 8th and 9th Convocation Ceremonies and Conferment of Diplomas, First Degrees, Higher Degrees, and Presentation of Prizes, scheduled for Friday, February 28, 2025.

Of the graduates, 24 will be receiving First Class honors, 116 will graduate with Second Class Upper, 65 with Second Class Lower, and 13 with Third Class degrees.

Addressing journalists at a press conference to announce the event, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Francis Igbasan, revealed that the Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities in Ekiti State, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, will deliver the Convocation Lecture titled “A Nation in Transition: Managing the Yearnings of its Restless Youths.”

Prof. Igbasan noted that the vision of the university, owned by Foursquare Gospel Church Nigeria, is to build a people of excellence and integrity for service. The university’s mission is to provide qualitative, functional, and sound education with godly virtues that will prepare men and women for leadership and a positive impact on society.

He said, “Before next year’s Convocation exercise in 2026, we intend to establish a Bachelor’s Programme in Telecommunication Engineering and Electrical Engineering. We have plans to also Civil Engineering, Industrial Relations, and Pharmacy, and commence Postgraduate programmes in Mass Communication, Economics and History, and International Studies.

“We are not unaware of some unwelcoming anti-social vices prevalent among the youths that have started creeping into the University Campus.

“Here at McPherson University, no room for such behaviour. About 14 students have been placed on suspension in this academic session alone. So, we don’t condone indiscipline here.

“This is because our certificate is a testament to our integrity and an affirmation that the recipient has been found worthy in learning and character.”

Igbasan again sought the inclusion of private Universities as beneficiaries of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

He lamented that the continued exclusion of private varsities as beneficiaries of the two federal government interventions will amount to depriving students of private institutions who are bonafide citizens of Nigeria of their rights.

He maintained that the federal government has no reason to exclude private varsities who also contributed to the growth of the nation from the intervention.

He appealed to the government to consider private Universities as beneficiaries, saying private institutions need the intervention to develop their infrastructures and train their personnel.

He said, “Excluding us from the intervention is like shortchanging the students, these students are citizens of Nigeria who will also contribute to the economy of the nation after leaving school.

“Private Universities are crying, the fund is not only meant for public institutions alone but private Universities inclusive. Excluding us from the fund is discrimination, it is bad, every student should have equal access to the fund.”

  • SHAPING CHARACTER, SHAPING THE FUTURE: The Transformative Power of Imbibing Maxims from David Adegboyega’s ‘Sound Character’ Book at Immaculate Grace Academy, Lagos

SHAPING CHARACTER, SHAPING THE FUTURE: The Transformative Power of Imbibing Maxims from David Adegboyega’s ‘Sound Character’ Book at Immaculate Grace Academy, Lagos

Article written by Tamaraebiju Ekpo-Jide @Tamaraebiju_ @Tamaraebiju Jide. A 300- level student of Mass Communications at Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, Nigeria

“Beauty without character is worse than rotten eggs” is an adage familiar to many of us from childhood. It means a person’s true beauty lies in internal qualities rather than superficial outward appearances.

Ralph Waldo Emerson’s ‘Good character is the only real security’ quote proves that character is not merely an abstract concept but a prime quality everyone should possess, regardless of race, culture, colour, religion, or age. It is the bedrock on which our interactions with others lie because we are easily perceived as good or credible by how chaste our character is.

Instilling sound character in young people can feel like navigating a complex labyrinth. This is because adolescence is a sensitive period for a child when peers and media can subconsciously influence their perceptions and behavioural patterns. The challenge faced by adults, parents, and teachers is not just about teaching children right from wrong; it’s about equipping children with the tools they need to make right and ethical decisions wherever they find themselves, even when they are miles away from home. In this scenario, the necessity for effective character education becomes paramount.

The management of Immaculate Grace Academy, Ojokoro, Lagos grasped this necessity. Hence, they introduced the book ‘Sound Character: Maxim for a Successful Future’ to their students over 11 years ago. In the book, David Adegboyega, the author, foregrounds that sound character is foundational to personal and professional development, identifying that integrity, perseverance, and ethical behaviour are essential ingredients for long-term success. It is also filled with relatable anecdotes and real-life examples illustrating how sound character can lead to positive outcomes. For instance, consider a young boy who learns the importance of honesty after facing the consequences of a ‘small’ lie.

‘Sound Character’ recognises that character development is not a one-size-fits-all process. It acknowledges each child’s unique challenges and provides a framework that can be adapted to various situations. Not only that, but ’Sound Character’ also emphasises the role of adults as mentors in this journey. The book believes that when adults model positive behaviour and openly discuss values and the rewards of possessing sound character, they subtly create an environment where sound character will thrive. Hence, the byline on the cover page that says, ‘what we put into education today will reflect in our culture tomorrow.’

To help shape the character and future of students at Immaculate Grace Academy, Ojokoro, Lagos, Nigeria, the teachings of the Sound Character book have been integrated into daily school life. The school created a daily roster for each student so that every school day on the assembly, students are required to read and reflect on its teachings. In addition to teaching character, it helps the students in learning public speaking, confidence and leadership. The school’s management has found its concepts to be age-appropriate, that even the youngest students can grasp and practice the qualities listed in the book.

To show the school’s love for the Sound Character book, nuggets and cartoon illustrations from it were used to brand the school’s fence. ‘Sound Character’ teachings extend beyond academic performance; they address critical societal issues like stealing, lying, examination malpractice, and corruption by promoting love, honesty, hard work, delayed gratification, dignity of labour and perseverance amongst other character strengths.

The positive feedback from both parents and students has been noteworthy. Many parents have expressed satisfaction with how the Sound Character book has positively impacted their children’s lives. Anene Khosiso, a final-year student at Immaculate Grace Academy, shared her experience using the book, saying, “Sound character has impacted me greatly; it has taught me so many character strengths that I wasn’t even taught at home. It has taught me resilience, perseverance, integrity, faith, and diligence; qualities I want to embody daily.” Anene emphasised that the book motivated her during tough times and shaped her into who she is today.

“When I feel down or manipulated, Sound Character inspires me. It offers me more than life itself,” she added. Anene referenced a Yoruba adage: “one person gives birth to a child, but the child is trained by a thousand persons.” It is not the sole duty of the parents to train the child. It is the responsibility of every responsible adult’’. She

encouraged students and schools, saying, “I urge students and schools to read and recommend this book because it can take you far in life and turn your millstones into milestones. And remember, if there’s anything worth imitating, it is sound character.”

Similarly, Momoh Solomon, another final-year student, reflected on how ’Sound Character’ has influenced his life. He said, “It has helped me recover from mistakes and move forward positively. A life built on sound character is a life designed to endure.”

He noted, “The book has introduced me to many admirable qualities I was unaware of. Starting with resilience, it has empowered me to bounce back from mistakes and difficult experiences, allowing me to navigate life more effectively. Although I have made numerous mistakes in the past, I have learnt from them and focused on the future. While life may try to manipulate you, having sound character and believing in those values will motivate you.”

He also encouraged students and schools to embrace the book’s teachings: “I urge students and schools to utilise ‘Sound Character’ because it will help shape your attitude. With the right attitude, you can overcome challenges, as a life grounded in sound character will outlast itself.”

The transformative power of ’Sound Character’ is further exemplified by Oyewunmi Oreoluwa Toluwalope, an alumnus now a Pharmacologist and an Event Planner. “The sound character program was a game-changer for me… I attribute my personal growth and successes to the foundational lessons learned through sound character,” she said.

As a notable Immaculate Grace Academy graduate, Oyewunmi was introduced to ’Sound Character’ during her secondary school years,

specifically from SS1 to SS3 (year 2014 to 2016). The annual daily repetition of the curriculum helped to internalize the book’s content. Through ’Sound Character’, she learnt values such as integrity, compassion, and responsibility that she has been able to apply within and beyond school, guided by the Holy Spirit. She expresses deep gratitude to Immaculate Grace Academy for aiding character development in her life and, by extension, the rest of the students.

Having used the Sound Character book for over eleven years, Immaculate Grace Academy has no plans to discontinue its use. The school’s administration believes that a generation of morally sound individuals would brighten Nigeria’s future if all schools adopted similar practices.

The Sound Character book is more than just a character-building book. It aims for a greater good, a catalyst for change. For those considering whether to invest in this transformative work, have no doubts. The positive testimonies from parents and students alike speak volumes about its worth. It is shaping individuals and laying the

groundwork for the greater good of our society at large. Imagine a society with equally groomed individuals of remarkable character!

‘Sound Character’ also encourages families to engage together in conversations about values at home. Imagine sitting around the dinner table discussing kindness or resilience through fun activities presented in the book. When parents embrace these teachings, they set powerful examples for their children. Children who see their parents embodying values such as compassion and responsibility are more likely to imbibe these strengths.

Every conversation about values and lessons on building sound character counts in this endeavour. Therefore, every adult must commit to building children with ’Sound Character’ as a guide because their future and ours depend on it.

The Sound Character book has been approved by the Lagos State Ministry of Education for junior and senior secondary schools for use in Guidance & Counselling. The book has done over 35,000 copies in prints with e-book version available at https://selar.co/q8ba. Parents, Organizations and State Governments can brand copies and donate to schools as part of their social sustainability initiatives. The book has been adapted to a 31-days wall calendar for use in bedrooms, classrooms and offices. Past sponsors of the book include First Bank of Nigeria Ltd., Mrs. Olufunso Amosun (Wife of former Governor of Ogun State), Hon. Jide Jimoh MHR (then Chairman, Yaba LCDA) and Brand Collections by Nene (on Instagram). David Adegboyega, author of the book, is ebullient and unrelenting in his vision to contribute his quota to the raising of a new generation of Nigerians to whom corruption is no option. The Forum of Student Leaders in Kaduna State has called on the Kaduna State Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Kaduna State University (KASU) to resolve the ongoing crisis that led to the strike at the institution.

In a statement issued to journalists in Kaduna on Friday, the student leaders expressed appreciation for the sacrifices and efforts of lecturers in advocating for better funding and improved working conditions in universities.

“We also acknowledge the fact that since he assumed office, Governor Uba Sani has demonstrated his commitment to the welfare of Kaduna State students, especially indigent students. He slashed the tuition fees of students in tertiary institutions and has been implementing an educational revitalization program in Kaduna State.

“Our passionate plea for speedy resolution of the dispute is based on the fact that we are the ones who are most affected by this strike. Our academic calendar has been disrupted, and our future is being put on hold. We are pleading with ASUU to consider our plight.

“We understand that the issues at stake are complex and require careful consideration, but we implore both parties to prioritize our education and find a middle ground that will allow us to return to our studies.

“Governor Uba Sani is well known for his pro-people, pro-poor disposition. His administration is anchored on fairness, equity, and justice. He has been prioritizing the interests of the poor, vulnerable, and underserved in Kaduna State. Human Capital Development is one of the key pillars of his administration. He wants the children of Kaduna State to get quality education to realize their potential to the fullest. We are therefore confident that he will look at the demands of ASUU with understanding and compassion,” the students said.
