  • 2019 Polls: Four missing after Delta boat mishap

    Four persons have been declared missing after a boat returning from a voting exercise capsized in the Benin River in Delta state.

    The Nation gathered that the victims, who were returning to Koko, the headquarters of Warri North council area of the state, were in a boat loaded with 22 persons, including three policemen, coming from Ebrohimi community, also in Warri North council area.

    Sources said the boat accident, which happened at about 1:20am on Sunday morning, occurred around Ureju community, also in Warri North. The passengers, who said to be community members, were returning to Koko after exercising their franchise during Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections in Ebrohimi community.

    Earlier on Sunday, reports had gone out on some local online media platforms about the accident, claiming that the passengers were officials and ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and some security agents, all of whom were returning with election materials to Koko.

    However, both the INEC are the state police command, on Sunday, debunked the earlier reports as false and misleading.

    Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Delta state, Dr Cyril Omorogbe, while responding to the report said none of his staff members had been involved in any boat mishap in the state, saying no material had been lost to accident in Delta North.

    “I understand that my staff members are not involved, they were all safe and the ad-hoc staff were safe. The actual details have got to me right now. And I don’t think the mishap affected the materials because it happened later in the day, from what I know,” he said.

    Also responding to the development, spokesman of the Delta state police command, Mr Chuks Orisewezie (ASP), gave details of the events leading to the accident as well as details of the passengers on board the ill-fated boat.

    “A boat loaded with 22 persons, which left from Ebrohimi community and heading for Koko, capsized around Ureju community at about 01:20 hours.

    “The occupants of the boat were three policemen and 19 community people. 18 persons, including the three policemen have been rescued, while search is still on for the remaining four missing persons. Two of the rescued victims have been taken to the hospital for medical care.

    “I must clarify that there were no INEC staff or NYSC members on board, just as there were no election materials. Investigation is already on”, he said.

  • Bagudu wins in 10 Kebbi councils

    Gov. Abubakar Bagudu of All Progressives Congress (APC) has won in 10 local government areas of Kebbi State in the governorship election, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

    Prof. Haruna Bichi, the Collation Officer for the election announced in Kebbi on Sunday that APC scored 30,720, while Isa Galaudu of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 4,526 votes in Gwandu LGA.

    He said in Birinin Kebbi LGA, APC also scored 79,092 while PDP polled 6,019 votes.

    In Argungu LGA, APC scored 30,101 while PDP pulled 23,397 votes, while in Shangal LGA, APC scored 27,012 and PDP polled 3,506 votes.

    Also in Aliero LGA, APC scored 21,923 against PDP’s 3,479, while in Suru LGA, APC scored 39,359 and PDP scored 5,198 votes.

    In Kargo LGA, APC got 21,899 while PDP scored 805 votes and in Augie LGA, APC scored 28,479 and PDP polled 11,875 votes.

    In Bunza LGA, APC scored 23,980, while PDP scored 2,114 votes. And in Dandy LGA, APC scored 33,315 while PDP pulled 5,921votes.

  • Adamawa: PDP leads after result from eight LGAs

    Hon. Umaru Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a slight lead over his major challenger in the Adamawa State governorship election, incumbent Governor Umaru Jibrilla Bindow of the All Progressives Congress (APC), when result from the eight local government area to be announced on Sunday came to light.

    Bindow had led the votes chart up to the 7th LGA, Song, but Fintiri lept over Bindow with the votes from Michika where he scored 24,504 votes against Bindow’s 13,224.

    Overall, however, Fintiri had only a slight lead with a total of 152,897 votes from the eight LGAs announced thus far, while Bindow had 150,431 votes.

    The eight LGAs from where the results had thus come by some minutes to 2pm when collation was paused for a lunch break Sunday, were Shelleng, Yola South, Gurei, and  Mubi North where Bindow had winning votes, as well as Mayo-Belwa, Yola North, Song and Michika where Fintiri has larger numbers of votes.

    The results from the eight LGAs have largely conformed to type in terms of voting patterns for the big two political parties, except that the APC won Yola North in the presidential election of February 23 as against the reality with this governorship election.

    The result thus far, with 13 more LGAs to go, also confirms predictions that the governorship election in Adamawa State would be a close race between the APC and the PDP.

     

     

     

  • Ekere loses local govt as INEC cancels elections in his ward

    The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Obong Nsima Ekere has lost his local government, Ikot Abasi to his opponent, Governor Udom Emmanuel of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    Emmanuel scored a total of 9,335 votes to beat Ekere who polled 7,549 out of 17,469 total votes cast in the election.

    The collation officer for Ikot Abasi, Dr. Edwin Nssien disclosed that elections in Unit 004,Ward 1 in Edemaya clan which is Ekere’s polling unit was cancelled.

    Elections were also cancelled in three other wards 2, 3 and 4 all in Edemaya clan.

    Dr. Nssien attributed the cancellation to electoral malpractices including hijack of election materials.

    However, the APC agent for the governorship election, Archbishop Samuel Akpan rejected the result announced saying it does not a true reflection of the exercise which took place in Ikot Abasi on Saturday.

    Akpan also accused the collation officer for Ikot Abasi, Dr. Edwin Nssien of being a card carrying member of the PDP on a mission to work for the success of the PDP in Ekere’s local government.

  • Polls: REC commends security agencies’ conduct in Enugu

    The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Enugu State, Dr Emeka Ononamadu, has hailed the synergy between security agencies and INEC during the general elections.

    Ononamadu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Sunday that security breach during the elections was negligible, attributing the situation to the cooperation of security agencies.

    NAN reports that the joint security agencies for the election included  the army, air force, police and Department of State Security, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

    The others are Federal Road Safety Corps, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Prisons Service, Federal Fire Service and State Vigilant Services.

    Ononamadu said that  security breach during the entire election period “is just about two per cent’’.

    According to him, the cooperation and unity-of-purpose shown by the joint security agencies is unprecedented.

    “The set of security personnel that participated in the general elections  in the state lived up to expectations.

    “They displayed a high sense of professionalism, which must be appreciated by INEC.

    “It is of late we had little security skirmishes in some rural areas, which is  negligible anyway.

    “ I am quite impressed in their general conduct,’’ he said.

    The REC said that the agencies contributed greatly to the peaceful and successful conduct of the elections in Enugu State.

  • Lagos Assembly Poll: APC wins Surulere ll

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Mrs Mosunmola Sangodara-Rotimi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of Surulere Constituency ll election in Lagos State.

    The Returning Officer, Prof. Ademola Adewara from the University of Lagos, made the declaration on Sunday, at the Surulere Local Government Collation Centre in Lagos.

    He said that Sangodara-Rotimi polled 21,925 votes to defeat Olalekan Aremu, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 9,507 votes.

    ” I, Prof. Ademola Adewara, the Returning Officer of Surulere Constituency ll election held on March 9, announce that Mrs Mosunmola Sangodara-Rotimi of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” he said.

    According to him, Mr Awobutu Adedeji of African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 1,533 votes, Mr Andrew Onyejiuba of YPP came fourth with 509 votes while Mr Chukwemeka Chiduabo of ADP came fifth with 206 votes.

    Also, Prof. Adetola Daramola, from the University of Lagos, Returning Officer for the Governorship election at the Surulere Local Government collation centre, said that some results were cancelled at three Registration Areas namely: Gbaja Ikate and Aguda.

    “Results were cancelled at six units in Gbaja totalling 4091 votes, eight in Ikate – 4, 573 votes and three units at Aguda-2, 032 votes.

    “So, 17 polling units were affected and 10696 votes were cancelled.

    “The reasons for the cancellation is due to over voting in some areas and that some Polling Officers absconded with card readers and result sheets,” she said.

    Reading the results for the governorship election, Daramola said that APC recorded 39,986 votes, PDP – 13,733 votes, ADC – 462 votes, ADP – 313 votes, AD – 104 votes, APA – 100 votes, NDC – 101 votes, YPP had 187 votes and other parties recorded less than a hundred votes.

    “We will submit this result to the INEC headquarters in Lagos,” she said. (NAN)

  • APC retains two Lagos assembly seats in Kosofe LG

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared candidates of All Progressives Congress (APC) winners of the two house of assembly constituencies in Kosofe area of Lagos State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the results were declared at the INEC Collation Centre in Anglican Primary School, Ogudu.

    The Returning Officer for Kosofe Constituency 1, Prof. Ayodeji Olukoju, from the University of Lagos, said that Ganiyu Okanlawon emerged winner with 12, 834 votes, defeating his closest rival, Moyosore Ogunlewe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 7,684 votes.

    “I, Ayodeji Olukoju, a Distinguished Professor of the University of Lagos, hereby certify that I was the Returning Officer for the Kosofe 1 Constituency House of Assembly election held on March 9, 2019.

    “I declare that the election was contested. I, therefore, declare that Ganiyu Okanlawon of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest votes, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” he said.

    Also, Mr Olatunde Braimon was declared the winner of Constituency 11, with 29,385 votes to beat his closest rival, Mr Oluote Karma of the PDP who scored 7,156 votes.

    The Returning Officer, Dr Oluwakemi Adekile of the University of Lagos, announced the Kosofe Constituency 2 result.

    Adekile said, “That Olatunde Braimon of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”

  • APC wins two Assembly seats in Mushin

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winners of the Mushin House of Assembly Constituencies 1 and 2 in Lagos State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN reports that the results of the Constituency 2 was declared at the Mushin Local Government Secretariat at about 10:15a.m.

    Also, results of the Constituency 1 was declared at St Martins Primary School, Idamegoro, Mushin, at about 11.00a.m.

    Dr Owolabi Kuye, the Returning Officer for the Mushin House of Assembly Constituency 1 and 2 is from the Department of Business Administration, University of Lagos.

    Kuye said a total number of 28, 678 votes were recorded in the election, with 1,113 void votes.

    According to him, 27, 565 valid votes were announced for the Lagos State House of Assembly by the INEC for Constituency 1.

    The returning officer said that Mr Nureni Ayeni Akinsanya of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 20,003 votes to beat his closest rival, Blessing Olawunni of the Accord Party who scored 5,075 votes.

    “That Nureni Ayinde Akinsanya of the APC having satisfied the requirements of law and scoring the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected having polled 20,033 votes,” Kuye said.

    Also, Kuye had declared Olayiwola Abdul-Sobur Olawale of APC the winner.

    Kuye said that a total of 66,947 votes were cast with 1,600 votes rejected and 65,347 votes valid.

    He said that Olayiwola Abdul-Sobur Olawale polled 23,875 votes, followed by Suleiman Monsuru Olawale of the Accord Party, who scored 6,749 votes.

    Kuye said, “That Olayiwola Abdul-Sobur Olawale of the APC having satisfied the requirements of law and scoring the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected having polled 23,875 votes.” NAN

  • APC wins two more seats in Osun Assembly

    Mr Adetoyi Adeyinka, of All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared winner of Odo-Otin Constituency seat in Osun House of Assembly by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

    Prof. Mabayoje Aluko, INEC Returning Officer said on Sunday that Adeyinka scored 13, 619 votes to win the seat.

    Aluko said his closet rival, Mr Adewale Egbedun of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), scored 8,304 votes to place second.

    Similarly, INEC has declared Mr Gbenga Ogunkanmi, of APC as winner of Ayedire Assembly seat.

    Prof. Femi Agboola, INEC Returning Officer said Ogunkanmi scored 10,090 to emerge winner of the seat.

    Agboola, a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife said Ogunkanmi’s closet rival, Mr Solomon Ogunbiyi of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 4, 171 votes to place second.

  • Kano: victory’ll be ours, Ganduje assures supporters

    Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has called on supporters of All Progressive Congress (APC) to be calm while collation of results of the gubernatorial and state Assembly elections are still ongoing.

    Ganduje, who spoke through his Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, assured that there is no cause for alarm as reports are very positive and encouraging, adding that APC will ultimately emerge winner, God willing.

    He, however, reminded supporters of all political parties and the entire people of the state that it is only the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, or its representative, has the mandate to announce results of elections and declare winners.

    Ganduje, therefore, urged people to always be law abiding and desist from taking law into their hands and any act capable of breaching peace in the state.

    As he expressed strong optimism that the APC will finally emerge victorious, he advised people to wait for the announcement of the final official result from the INEC before embarking on celebrations based on wrong assumptions and falsehood.
