  • 29 for Adamawa gov poll, 284 for Assembly seats

A total of 313 candidates under 29 political parties in Adamawa State will be contesting for Governorship and House of Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday.

Twenty nine candidates have been entered for the governorship election while 284 will be vying for the 25 seats in the state House of Assembly, according to the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Kassim Gaidam.

Four of the 29 governorship candidates are women, while 25 among the 284 candidates for the legislative poll are also women.

The foregoing are however mostly figures on paper, as among the lot entered for the governorship race, for example, only four or five are known to Adamawa people to be in serious contention.

They are incumbent Governor Mohammed Jibrilla Bindow of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon Umaru Fintiri of main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen Abdulaziz Nyako of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief Emmanuel Bello of Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Rev Abel Behora of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN).

Bindow, who was representing Adamawa North District in the Senate when he contested election and won to become the state governor in 2015, will be going into the election with power of incumbency boosted by performance anchored on good roads and regular payment of workers’ salaries but he will have intraparty opposition from a few powerful individuals to contend with.

Fintiri is a former acting governor whose short reign, 15 July to 1 October, 2014; earned for him a reputation for action and love for workers’ welfare and the popular nickname ATM to go with it, but he is said to have issues with an elite group.

Abdulaziz Nyako is the serving senator for Adamawa North whose father, Murtala Nyako, a former governor of the state, will be a strong deciding factor when Adamawa people go to the polls on Saturday, as Murtala Nyako’s reign (2007-2014) was popular among the people.

Emmanuel Bello of the SDP is a former House of Representatives member who has carried out easily the most comprehensive governorship campaign in the state.

He started early and was up to this week still strong on activities that should help his candidacy.

Rev Abel Behora of the ANN has created some form of visibility for himself but he is the least likely to go far among the five who have shown some fighting spirit.

The remaining 24 governorship candidates have not made any known move towards actualizing their supposed dream. Some have given up entirely, with ten earlier in the week announcing that they were stepping down their candidacies to support Umaru Fintiri of the PDP after they failed to sustain a deal with Bindow.

  • Police deploy 5,000 personnel for Saturday polls in Nasarawa

The Police Command in Nasarawa State says it has deployed about 5,000 personnel for Saturday’s Governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

“We want to assure all law-abiding citizens in the state that we are ready to provide the much needed security for the conduct of the governorship and state assembly elections.

“We also want to warn all those who may want to ferment trouble during the elections to desist from it.

“We have the will, training, capacity and the backing of the law to checkmate them,” Samaila added.

He said the police would not hesitate to deal with any person or group of persons that might want to cause security breaches and mar the elections in the state.

The PPRO therefore called on the people to turn out en mass on Saturday and vote peacefully.

  • Tension grips Akwa Ibom ahead of gov poll

There is widespread tension in Akwa Ibom State ahead of Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections. Fear of violence has gripped the state, following the reported influx of political thugs and deployment of extra security personnel to keep peace.

Such fears were heightened following the arrest on Tuesday night of 166 suspected thugs from Edo State.

Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko MacDon, however, said on a live radio programme on Friday that the suspected thugs have been released on bail, since there was nothing incriminating to charge them to court.

Some concerned Akwa Ibom indigenes have appealed President Muhammadu Buhari to rise above partisanship and direct security agencies to end the siege on the state.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the indigenes under the aegis of the Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement, said the suspected thugs from Edo admitted that more than eight buses have arrived Uyo undetected by security agencies.

  • Don’t let politicians turn elections to war, Dickson urges new police boss

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has appealed to the Nigeria Police to check the excesses of criminally-minded politicians during the Governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Dickson spoke on Friday when the 11th Commissioner of Police posted to the state in four months, Mr. Olushola David, led a team of officers to pay him a courtesy call in Government House, Yenagoa.

He asked David to assert himself as the chief law enforcement officer and warned him against allowing politicians to hijack his roles.

Constitutionally speaking, he said it was the place of the police to play a major role in all civil matters in the country, including providing security during elections.

He stressed that other security agencies only complemented the efforts of the police where necessary.

The governor assured the new CP of the state government’s support and urged the police to be thoroughly professional in discharging their duties to prevent a recurrence of the alleged irregularities that marred the February 23 Presidential and National Assembly polls in some parts of the state.

He emphasised the need for institutions and individuals to respect the rule of law noting that democracy, as well as national unity and stability, would continue to suffer a setback in the country’s quest for sustainable development if drastic measures were not taken to check the growing lawlessness and impunity.

Dickson restated his call on the people of the state to come out en masse to participate in the Saturday’s House of Assembly polls, decrying the attitude of politicians who see election as a do-or-die affair.

He said: “We expect the police in this state now led by you for this election purposes to play its crucial, primal role and take charge of election security and monitoring.

I have always said that I treat every Commissioner of Police in this state as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer. All other agencies have to support the police and the CP.

“So, as Commissioner of Police in charge of election duties, we expect you to lead and take decisive steps (preventive as well as enforcement steps) to ensure that hoodlums do not hide under the cover of elections to kill, maim and destroy property and destabilise our peaceful communities.

“Nobody should be allowed, no matter how highly placed, to sponsor criminals and gang leaders to foment crisis.

Election is not war. It is not where people arm criminals to constitute a direct challenge of the nation. Under your leadership, we expect that you will take steps to check such criminal acts between now and the election and thereafter.

“The level of impunity displayed by political actors is such that if it is not contained, it will lead to complete disregard of the law, its servants and agencies and even a threat to the existence of the state itself as an organised authority.”

Earlier, David assured the governor of his team’s readiness to provide adequate security and level playing ground for all political parties and voters to exercise their franchise in the elections.

The police boss said he had upon arrival in the state, held series of meetings with various stakeholders, including sister security agencies, to review what transpired in the last elections with a view to forestalling any recurrence of the identified irregularities in this Saturday’s polls.

He said: “The mandate of the IGP Mohammed A. Adamu is for us to come out here and discharge our duties professionally. And that is what I have told the officers and men today (Thursday). We want to assure the people of Bayelsa that the team deployed here will discharge their duties creditably.

“There will be adequate security. So, the fear of anything happening at the polling stations should be put to rest. We have been able to identify what the problems are and we are making sure that such things do not repeat themselves again.”

  • Election: We’ve made tighter security arrangements – Bello

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, has assured residents of the state of tighter measures put in place for their security during and after Saturday’s state assembly elections.

Kogi is among the states where governorship election will not hold.

Bello in a statewide broadcast said that security operatives have been given the powers to do all that is possible to prevent any form of violence during the conduct of the election.

He expressed satisfaction with measures put in place by the security services to forestall a repeat of pockets of violence witnessed in some parts of the state, during the presidential and National Assembly elections, a fortnight ago.

He expressed sadness over the recurring “bloodletting” arising from communal clashes, particularly in Sheria and Bassa areas in the Kogi East Senatorial district, where twenty people were reportedly killed on Thursday, and fifty houses razed.

He directed security operatives to “haunt” down those responsible for the carnage in the affected areas.

Governor Bello expressed regret over events in the judicial sector of the state, noting that the suit filed against the administration by the state chapter of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), over alleged non payment of six months salary, was not unrelated to the refusal of members of the union to forward their payroll to the authorities, during the pay parade exercise conducted by the government.

The Chief Judge (CJ) of the state was joined in the suit filed by JUSUN against the governor.

He said that money meant for the salary payment of the “innocent” state judicial workers, were however ‘sitting in the banks.”

    My fellow Kogites,

We remain grateful to God for the overall peace and security which we have enjoyed in Kogi State, both before and after the Presidential and National Assembly Elections on the 23rd of February, 2019.

I am impressed that our security services have quickly plugged identified loopholes through which isolated instances of violence marred the last round of elections, especially during the campaigns.

Through the efforts of vigilant operatives, and the cooperation of the various parties and their candidates, the last two weeks of campaigning for the next Elections have been generally peaceful across Kogi. Once more, I thank the men and women in uniform who protect and serve us in Kogi State for their vigilance. We look forward to their usual gallantry tomorrow.

In other words, even though we have more candidates contesting for election into the Kogi State House of Assembly tomorrow than we had for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections a fortnight ago, we have had peace despite the higher stakes for us as a State.

It is therefore clear to everybody now that electoral violence is a choice which individuals make out of their own desperation, and not because of any set of circumstances. Irrespective of appearances, people who provoke or perpetrate electoral violence do so because they lack inherent nobility of character and have an unwillingness to let the electorate decide.

I wish to assure all Kogites that we have made tighter security arrangements against the elections tomorrow. The Police and other law enforcement agencies have been fully mobilised and are on red alert. They have our mandate to do anything and everything necessary within the law to keep our people safe and ensure peaceful polls.

Accordingly, I urge parties, politicians and their supporters to continue maintaining the peace as any attempt to endanger the populace before, during and after the Elections will be met with stiff resistance.

Staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and all categories of Electoral Officers and ad hoc staff who are sent to Kogi State can expect full security coverage wherever they are stationed.

As long as they play by the rules and perform their duties with conscience they have nothing to fear. We will however hold anyone who facilitates electoral offences responsible and pursue their prosecution to the full extent of the law.

I must now address the senseless and perrenial conflicts with which some communities in Bassa Local Government Area have continued to trouble the peace and tranquility of Kogi State.

The people of Sheria and Oguma communities in particular must understand that we are now living in the 21st Century and there are legal ways of settling ethnic disputes over anything, including farmlands and fishing grounds.

Government has mediated and done everything to resolve these conflicts in the past. However, the senseless bloodletting which happened overnight yesterday simply tells us that the attackers are not ready to listen to reason.

Let it be known as of today therefore that our patience with these killings and burning of settlements is over. Enough is enough. We shall deal decisively with this matter henceforth. If people will not live together in peace, we have a duty as Government to enforce the peace and stop them from disturbing those who want to.

I hereby direct our security agencies to spare no resources in hunting down and arresting the culprits in these recent attacks. We are going to try them for murder and request for the maximum penalty since they have no qualms taking human lives.

In pursuit of long-term solutions, we are also considering the imposition of certain executive orders in the overriding public interest which are designed to finally abate this intolerable nuisance.

In the days ahead, I assure Kogites that we will so trouble those who trouble our peace in this atrocious manner that they will find themselves so occupied with too much troubles of their own to plot or execute further mischief.

I shall digress briefly at this point to address the lawsuit filed against the Administration yesterday by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) over alleged non-payment of their salaries. I am not surprised by the timing of the case considering the season were in, and the politicisation of institutions all over the place.

The refusal of the leadership of the Kogi State Judiciary to forward their staff payroll for the Pay Parade with the collusion of JUSUN leaders is well documented. I have pleaded unsuccessfully with them for months now to do the needful and spare their innocent members this trauma. The Kogi State House of Assembly has also tried to intervene only to be stopped by injunction from the Judiciary curiously obtained while courts claimed to be on strike. I have petitioned the Chief Justice of Nigeria to intervene since November last year, but we are yet to receive any feedback.

We are therefore happy that the Chief Judge of the Kogi State was also joined to the suit by JUSUN. We look forward to being educated on how a pay parade across all branches and cadres of our Civil Service is prejudicial to the independence of the Judicial Arm, but not the Legislative.

In any case, monies amounting to several months salaries due to Kogi State Civil Servants working in the Judiciary are sitting in the banks. My preoccupation is how to get that money to innocent staffers without breaching applicable service rules or our Collective Agreement with Labour. I trust the Almighty God that reason will prevail sooner than later.

On the elections tomorrow, I encourage our people to come out en masse and vote for their representatives without fear of duress, or of threat to their lives and properties.

    God bless Kogi State.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    Thank you.

  • Aisha Buhari seeks appointment for APC card-carrying members

The Wife of the President, Dr. Mrs. Aisha Buhari has advised the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to consider only card-carrying members for political appointments.

She made the call at a dinner to celebrate the victory of the President at Daura, his home town on Thursday 7th March, 2019.

A statement by her spokesman, Suleiman Haruna, said that the event which took place at the Daura Stadium, attracted women and youth supporters of the APC from across Katsina state.

Noting that the constitution of the party specifies that appointments to offices in an APC led government should go to card-carrying members, she advised that the party constitution should be respected.

She also expressed appreciation over the support that the party enjoyed in the last Presidential election, especially from women and youth.

The wife of the President assured them that government will do more to improve their lives.

“I wish to thank the women and youth of this country for the number of votes they gave President Buhari in the 2019 election and to assure that he will continue to do his best to make Nigeria a better country.” she said

One of the speakers at the event, Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika praised the electorate for choosing President Buhari, whose integrity, he said, is time-tested.

He commended Mrs. Buhari for her initiative of engaging women and youth during the presidential campaign, which resulted in the massive votes recorded.

Goodwill messages were delivered by many politicians including Woman Leader of the APC Women and Youth Presidential Campaign Team, Mrs. Binta Muazu, and Senator Fatuhu Mohammed, representing Daura Zone.

The event was attended by wife of the Governor of Katsina state, Mrs. Zakiyya Masari, wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Mannir Yakubu and wife of Minister of Interior, Mrs. Hadiza Dambazau.

Various artistes performed at the event.

  • Rivers: APC Chieftain calls for violent free poll

A two-time governorship aspirant in Rivers state and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Prince Tonye Princewill has asked politicians and stakeholders in the state to do everything possible to ensure the peaceful conduct of this weekend’s governorship and state Houses of Assembly election in the state.

Princewill said in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja that violence will not help the state as bad news travels fast and sends the wrong signal from Rivers state to the outside world

He said “The news in the country on Rivers state is often fashionably negative and we as leaders can not simply blame it on the media. We all have a responsibility too. While some are fascinated by the headlines, we are the ones who have to suffer the impact of these negative headlines and tarnished reputations.”

The Prince of the Niger Delta as he is fondly called by his associates explain that without security, we cannot attract business, without business you can not create jobs and without jobs, you can not have peace.

He said “Two Northerners competed keenly for the office of President and it is in Rivers that our people were killing each other. How does that make sense? Having said that, people will not realize that most of Rivers state was peaceful. In Asari Toru where I was, Phalga and Abua LGA where historically violence has been the norm, people from opposing parties were seen sitting together at the collation center and cracking jokes. You don’t hear that do you because bad news travels fast. Leaders should think beyond today and ourselves.”

He also called on the international community to sanction people who obtain power through violence and the blood of innocent people saying that sanctions, travel restrictions and account freezes are what will hit a politician where it hurts. “We are tired of their barking. They need to start to develop teeth.”
