  • Atiku in Rivers: I’m author of restructuring

PEOPLE’S Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has described himself as the author of restructuring.

He claimed that he would be Nigeria’s President from May 29 and that President Muhammadu Buhari must go.

The former vice president spoke yesterday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, near Port Harcourt International Airport, Rivers State, while campaigning along with other PDP leaders.

President Buhari will also be at the same Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium today in continuation of his presidential campaigns.

Atiku, who was also accompanied by one of his wives, Jennifer, got to the stadium at 2:27p.m. for a campaign slated for 10a.m., when many tired members of the party had left the venue, owing to the scorching sun.

One of the Masters of Ceremonies (MCs) repeatedly announced: “Close the back gate”, when the stadium was almost becoming empty.

When the PDP vice presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was asked to speak, he kept shouting in Pidgin English: “Rivers people, make una wait now”.

The rally was also attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was accompanied by his wife, Dame Patience; Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike; his counterpart in Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal; the Director-General of PDP’s Presidential Campaign Council, Dr. Bukola Saraki; the party’s National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, an indigene of Andoni LGA of Rivers state; and Rivers State Chairman Chief Felix Obuah, among other party leaders.

Atiku said: “Let me use this opportunity to pay tribute to a Nigerian, who is patriotic, who is fearless, who is courageous, who is hardworking and who believes in this country. That Nigerian is Governor Wike. Wike and I have a few things in common. We no dey fear ooo. Do you want somebody we dey fear to lead you? It means if he is afraid, you will all be finished. I want to commend him (Wike) for the hard work he has done in Rivers State. I have been part and parcel of this state (Rivers) since 1984. I have not seen one single governor, who has transformed this state to such a level that you can compare it with any modernised state.”

He added: “If you elect PDP, which I am sure you are going to elect, and if you elect Atiku, you know that I am the author of restructuring. I will give it (restructuring) to Niger Delta and I will give it to all parts of this country. We must restructure.

“It was the Obasanjo/Atiku administration that started the East-West Road. Till today, it is not finished. It is not finished, because you did not vote for PDP in 2015 to continue. APC came and halted it. If you vote for PDP again, we are going to finish it.”

He added: “Your ports that do not work to create jobs, the Port Harcourt Port and Onne Port, we will complete them so that we can create thousands of jobs for young men and women in Rivers State.

“You can see that APC has not done anything for you. They have not done anything for Niger Delta. They have not done anything for Southsouth. Every development that you have got in Rivers State, Southsouth or Niger Delta is PDP. So, continue to vote for PDP. I beg you.

“I want to assure you that I will protect the constitution (of Nigeria). You know sey nobody go court reach me in Nigeria, to protect our constitution. I will protect separation of powers. I will not interfere with the National Assembly, because I believe in checks and balances. I will not interfere with the judiciary, because it is part and parcel of our checks and balances. I will uphold the rule of law. I will not allow rule of law to be trampled by anybody.”

The PDP presidential candidate also alleged that the APC was preaching violence, claiming that it was not the first time that President Buhari would do so, stressing that Nigerians wanted peace.

He declared that “Buhari must go.”

Jonathan stated that Atiku would be Nigeria’s president from May 29, 2019, describing Rivers State as totally PDP.

He claimed that Nigeria had not made progress since he left office on May 29, 2015, after his humiliating defeat by Buhari, the first of its kind in Nigeria’s history, for a sitting president to lose election.

Wike said: “We have darkness and light (in Nigeria). APC is darkness. PDP is light. Do you want to vote for darkness? It is a war between dictatorship and freedom. Do you want dictatorship? Dictatorship is APC. Freedom is PDP. Are you Atikulated?”

Secondus described Atiku as the next president, alleging that APC was in disarray, with its leaders desperate and confused.

The PDP National maintained that Atiku had capacity, energy, being innovative, would be able to work for 24 hours daily and would be fully in charge as the Commander-in-Chief’

Saraki urged Nigerians to move the nation forward, claiming that his party’s presidential candidate would change Nigeria and put an end to the current poverty.

Obi said the only person, who could make Nigeria to work again, was Atiku.

Rivers PDP Chairman assured that people of the state would give Atiku 100 per cent votes.

The rally ended at 3:36 p.m.

  • Days to polls …Politicians keep courts busy

Five days to the elections, politicians and their supporters are in frenzied mood as a result of developments from the courts and elsewhere. Adekunle Yusuf, Musa Odoshimokhe, Nicholas Kalu, Calabar, Eric Ikhilae, Faith Yahaya, Abuja, Bisi olaniyi and Rosemary Nwisi, Port Harcourt report.

These are busy times for the courts.  They were busy yesterday and will still be today deciding electoral disputes. Senator John Owan Enoh’s governorship ambition in Cross River State was cut short by a Federal High Court sitting in Calabar. The fate of the candidates in Rivers All Progressives Congress (APC) will be decided today.

The police also unveiled its security plans for the elections, just as the controversies over endorsement of candidates are refusing to abate.

     Court sacks Owan-Enoh

A Federal High Court sitting in Calabar yesterday sacked Senator John Owan Enoh as the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Cross River State. The court recognised Niger Delta Affairs Minister Pastor Usani Usani as the candidate of the party.

It also sacked other candidates of the party currently recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The court also sacked the factional leader of the party led by Mr John Ochalla, which is loyal to Owan-Enoh.

In a two-hour judgment delivered by Hon Justice Simon A Amobeda, the court ordered that “INEC should only receive and accept the names and candidates for the 2019 elections that emerged from the lawful executive led by Godwin Etim John.”

It also ordered that persons parading themselves as the executive members of the APC in Cross River State should forthwith cease and that the lawful executive of APC in Cross River State remains that which is led by Godwin Etim John.

Usani and Owan-Enoh have been in a protracted battle over the governorship candidate position of the party.

Reports of the judgment were circulated on social media by appointees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led state government on Monday evening.

Further probes revealed to The Nation that in a two-hour judgment delivered by Hon Justice Simon A Amobeda earlier, the court ordered that INEC should only receive and accept the names and candidates for the 2019 elections that emerged from the executive led by Godwin Etim John.

It also ordered that persons parading themselves as the executive members of the APC in Cross River State should forthwith cease and that the executive of APC in Cross River State remains that which is led by Godwin Etim John.

The court also sacked the leadership of the party led by Mr John Ochalla, which is loyal to Owan-Enoh.

Reacting to the judgement, the Director General of Usani Campaign Organisation, Ekpenyong Cobham, said the enforcement of the judgement has been long overdue and appealed to INEC and the security agencies to do the needful by complying with the judgment.

The spokesperson for the Owan-Enoh Campaign Organisation, Dan Amor, said the “purported judgment” was an unnecessary distraction, which cannot stand in law.

His statement reads: “The attention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State, has been drawn to a purported judgment delivered by the Federal High Court, Calabar, seeking to enforce an earlier controversial ruling of a Bwari, Abuja High Court that recognised the Etim John’s factional the state executive council of the party and directing the withdrawal of the candidates of the late state chairman, Dr. Matthew Achigbe, from state/federal assemblies to governorship, from the 2019 general elections, and wishes to state as follows:

“That the Bwari, Abuja High Court ruling has since been appealed by the defendant in the Appeal Court in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja pending hearing.

“That the claimant, Pastor Usani Uguru Usani had sought an Abuja High Court sitting in Apo, FCT, to declare him the governorship candidate of the APC in our state and his case summarily dismissed by the court presided over by Justice Adeniyi on January 7, 2019.”

Supreme Court decides Rivers APC’s fate today

The Supreme Court will deliver judgements in the about six appeals by the two warring factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.

The appeals are mainly against the decision of the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, which upheld the judgment of the High Court of Rivers State which voided the primaries conducted by the faction loyal to Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and the other loyal to Senator Magnus Abe.

A five-man panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour, scheduled judgment for today after entertaining arguments from the lawyer to the faction loyal to Amaechi, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) and Henry Bello, who represented the faction loyal to Abe.

Fagbemi and Bello argued the appeal filed by the APC, in which the court said it will give judgment today, would be binding on the other appeals.

Fagbemi urged the court to void the judgment of the High Court on the ground that the trial court had no jurisdiction when it entertained the suit on which the judgment was given.

He contended that since the trial court had no jurisdiction, its judgement in the matter was a nullity and should be set aside.

Fagbemi urged the court to invoke Section 22 of the Supreme Court Act and give final judgment in the matter to end the multiple cases arising from the Rivers State APC primary election.

Bello, in his counter-argument, urged the apex court to dismiss the appeal of the APC on the ground that it has become academic in nature in view of an earlier decision by the court.

He contended that by the decision of the court on February 8, which upheld the order of the High Court, restraining APC in Rivers State from conducting any primary election, the current appeal by APC had died and should be buried.

Bello told the court that the respondents, led by Ibrahim Umar, who were aggrieved by the violation of the Electoral Act and the Constitution in the manner the APC conducted its pre- election matters in Rivers, had secured a consent judgment in their favour, a judgment, he insisted, still stands.

At the conclusion of arguments by parties, Justice Rhodes-Vivour frowned at the multiple appeals filed by both factions of the APC in Rivers on a single issue.

He said the multiple appeals were not only time wasting, they were capable of confusing the court.

The court struck out an appeal filed by Abe against the stay of execution of the judgment of the Federal High Court, which nullified the nomination of  Cole and others as candidates the APC in Rivers State.

The court upheld the argument by Fagbemi (SAN). Fagbemi had argued that the records of proceedings at the lower court, filed by Abe did not follow the rules of the Appeal Court to certify the said documents.

Ruling Justice Rhodes-Vivour noted that only a few of pages of the records of appeal were signed.

He said since most of the pages were not signed, it could be interpreted that they were Abe’s personal documents.

Justice Rhodes-Vivour ordered parties to the appeal back to the Court of Appeal for the determination of the substantive appeal.

Abe had appealed an interlocutory decision of the Court of Appeal, which stayed the execution of the judgment of the High Court which nullified the primaries of the APC in Rivers State

Cole hopeful of running for governor

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Pastor Tonye Cole, is hopeful the Supreme Court will allow him run in the March 2 polls.

Cole, through the spokesman of his campaign organisation, Ogbonna Nwuke, said: “We have received a formal brief from our lawyers who were at the Supreme Court this (yesterday) morning to press the arguments of the APC and its candidates in some cases that are currently pending before the superior court.

“We have learnt that no less than three different matters were entertained today by the apex court. The first was an application by Senator Magnus Abe’s lawyer against the stay of execution granted Pastor Tonye Cole and candidates of the APC by the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt.

“The second matter was based on jurisdiction, while the third matter witnessed the commencement of initial legal arguments in a substantive matter. We are happy with the pace that is being adopted by the Supreme Court. We are particularly pleased that the attempt to frustrate the stay of execution granted by the Court of Appeal at the Supreme Court was today (yesterday) refused.

“Senator Magnus Abe and his associates have been ordered by the Supreme Court to descend to the court below for the eventual determination of the substantive suit.

“From what transpired today (yesterday), hearing in some cases which were argued, would continue tomorrow (today) at the Supreme Court. Against this background, we urge Rivers people and our teeming party supporters to kindly remain focused and law abiding.

“We have confidence in our lawyers and enormous faith in our God. They (the unnamed aggressors) had lied to an unsuspecting public that ongoing litigation at the Supreme Court had been settled. We are wondering what they are still trying to do in court, if there are no issues before the Supreme Court.

“For us, it is not over, until it is over. We shall continue to push for equity, fairness and justice. It does not matter whatever our opponents do, we know that justice will eventually prevail.”

Supreme Court strikes out appeals in Ogun PDP crisis

The Supreme Court yesterday declined jurisdiction over two appeals by the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) against the Senator Buruji Kashamu backed leadership of the party in Ogun State.

The appeals marked: SC/968/2018 (PDP v. Eng Adebayo Dayo & 4 others) and SC/1203/2018 (PDP v. Pegba Otemolu and 3ors, were struck out by a five-man panel of the court led by Musa Datijo Muhammad.

The court said the appeals, being pre-election related were incompetent because they were not filed within the 14 days allowed under Section 285(9) of the Constitution, others referred to as the 4th Alteration Act.

Justice Muhammad said the court no longer possessed the necessary jurisdiction to hear the appeal because it has become statute barred, lifeless and worthless, having been caught by the 4th Alteration to the 1999 Constitution.

PDP in the appeal had challenged the judgment of Justice Buba Ibrahim of the Federal High Court and upheld by the Court of Appeal which conferred recognition on the Dayo Adebayo led Executive Committee of the party in Ogun State as the authentic leadership.

At the resumed hearing in the first appeal, the court asked the appellant’s lawyer Emeka Etiaba (SAN) whether the case was a pre-election matter to which he answered in the negative.

He said the appeal was about the leadership of the PDP in Ogun State and was not election related.

The lawyer to the respondents, Alex Izinyon (SAN), insisted that it was a pre-election matter because it relates to the candidate nomination for the next general election.

Izinyon drew the court’s attention to ground 8 of the application filed on December 14, 2018 by the appellant for accelerated hearing of the appeal, where the appellant said the subject of the matter is to determine who are the rightful candidates of the appellant in Ogun State.

He also referred to paragraphs 11, 12 and 13 of the affidavit supporting the application where the appellant also said that the matter is about the determination of which of the two set of candidates that emanated from the two executive of the party should Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should accept.

He also had informed the court that the appeal has become a mere academic exercise because it has been caught by the 4th Alteration Act which requires the filing of a pre-election suit within 14 days.

The court agreed with Izinyon and held that the case was a pre-election matter, on which the court no longer has jurisdiction in view of the effect of the 4th Alteration Act.\

Although Etiaba made spirited effort to sway the court to his side with argument that the suit was not a pre-election matter, the Supreme Court refused to accept his argument.

He eventually agreed with the court position and withdrew the appeal.

Justice Muhammad, in his ruling agreed with Izinyon that the appeal has become statute barred and lifeless, He consequently struck it out.

The same fate befell the second appeal when it was called later.

Dogs, horses for INEC headquarters, collation centres

Dogs and horses will be deployed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters and collation centres during the elections, the Force Animal Branch (FAB) of the Police has said.

The animals are expected to help control the crowd at the locations.

Speaking during a meeting in Abuja yesterday with Officers in Charge (OCs) of FAB on their roles during the elections, the Commissioner of Police FAB, Aishatu Abubakar, said dogs and horses were more efficient in crowd control operation.

She said: “We want to use dogs to control crowd because they are very effective. When you are confronted with issues of crowd, ten to 20 policemen cannot do what one or two dogs will do. Once a dog stands, people will behave themselves. Also for the mounted troop, a man on a horse can easily control crowd. So, the animals will be deployed to INEC headquarters and collation centres because that is where we have large number of crowd.

“We also have veterinary doctors to support and ensure that all animals are safe.”

On whether the animals will not scare people away and prevent them from voting, she said: “We expect understanding from members of the public. Our dogs are well trained and they won’t bite indiscriminately. If there is a problem or the dog is suspicious of somebody,  that is when they will come close. We expect the public to understand that the dogs and horses will be there to protect lives and property.

“To better reposition the department for efficient service delivery, the branch will be distributing to all its formations across the counter about 500 bags of K9 food, 1000 different categories of K9 operational gears, over 200 veterinary clinics equipment ranging from examination tables, stretcher, surgical, ambulatory and necropsy kits, 2500 variety of veterinary drugs and consumables.

“The Mounted section of the department will be distributing over 600 bags of the horse feed, guinea corn, millet and 500 varieties of mounted operational gears.”

The Deputy Inspector of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Abdulmajid Ali, urged the personnel to be at their best behaviour.

He said: “I want to remind you of the forthcoming election. Your performance will be monitored and we want to see how you will perform and how the items deployed will be utilised and not sold. All items deployed must be utilised and used justifiably because we want the election to be free and fair.”

Buhari sure of victory, says Ashafa

Senator Gbenga Ashafa has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s integrity will get him re-elected on Saturday.

Ashafa, who spoke during the All Progressives Congress (APC) door-to-door campaign in Magodo, Lagos, said APC was sure of victory.

He said the President has delivered on his campaign promises, noting that the fight against corruption, infrastructure development and bringing insecurity under control were landmarks of the administration.

Ashafa added that Magodo residents would troop out to vote the President, noting the people were comfortable with Buhari’s achievements in the past three and half years.

He said: “What we are doing right now is the drumming of support for President Buhari, who is sure of victory on Saturday. We are telling the residents of Magodo to disregard the campaign of calumny by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“We are here to also let them know that in the area of infrastructure development, agriculture, social welfare and passage of laws, the President has broken all records.

“Only five days back, I was at Iju, we took train from there to Abeokuta. A standard rail gauge has been put in place in the Southwest and this is the first time we are witnessing that. We have one in Warri/Itakpe, we have one across the length and breadth of Abuja and Kaduna.

“The rail gauge that has just been completed is one segment of Lagos/Kano. Nigerians should vote the President in order to enjoy the progress recorded under this administration. We are beneficiaries of roads construction and expansion.”

ARMPOO tasks Ogonis on peaceful elections

The Association of Retired Senior Military and Para-Military  Officers  of Ogoni (ARMPOO)  has urged the people of Ogoni ethnic nationality to maintain peace before, during and after the elections.

Its coordinator, Rear Admiral John Nicholas Bakpo, in a statement yesterday, condemned the unending spate of violence in the area, particularly Gwara and Kpong communities.

The association urged politicians to desist from inciting the people to engage in violence by promoting thuggery, ballot box snatching and kidnapping during the forthcoming general elections.

Bakpo urged youths of Ogoni to shun cultism, armed robbery and assassination.

  • Saraki replies APC leaders

Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki yesterday reacted to the remarks made by All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders during the party’s presidential campaign rallies at the Metropolitan Square in Ilorin, Kwara State.

APC leaders, including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole and Information, Culture & Tourism Minister Lai Mohammed had called for an end to the Saraki “hegemony” in Kwara by casting their ballot for President Buhari and candidates of the APC on Saturday and March 2.

But in a statement by his Media Adviser Yusuf Olaniyonu, the Senate President said theattacks on him showed the frustration of the APC leaders.

The statement stated that the APC leaders knew that their party would lose the elections.

It reads: “That is why in their desperate mood they are only hurling abuses instead of discussing issues and telling the people what they will do for them. They came to Kwara State to hurl insults at me and my people, instead of explaining to the people what they want to do differently and what contributions their flagbearers and other leaders in the state have made to our various communities to justify the people shifting their loyalty to their dying party. They promised nothing concrete that will improve the standard of living of the people and provide infrastructure.

“My problem with them has always been that after we worked with our people to support them to win in 2015, they refused to work on infrastructure and other policy issues that can bring direct benefit to our people.”

The statement alleged that of Tinubu’s grouse against  Saraki was that the latter blocked him from becoming Buhari’s running mate in 2015.

“As far as he, Tinubu, is concerned, I stopped him from realisng his ambition then. However, I believe my action then and now is in pursuit of national interest. Again, I supported President Buhari in 2015 because I believe he could make a positive change. I left the party when I realised he lacked the capacity and the desire to make any change,” Saraki was quoted as saying.

Saraki, theory had earlier been dismissed in a statement by the former Lagos governor’s ally, Mr. Tunji Bello.

Bello, who is Secretary to the Lagos State Government (SSG), gave an account on the role Tinubu played in promoting Prof Yemi Osinbajo as Buhari’s running mate in the run-up to the 2015 presidential poll. Osinbajo had also corroborated the claim on several occasions.

  • Why we’re adopting simultaneous accreditation, voting by INEC boss

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu yesterday explained why the electoral umpire adopted the simultaneous accreditation and voting for the forthcoming elections.

The model, the INEC boss said, was recommended by the Commonwealth Observer Mission to the 2015 general elections.

Prof Yakubu also said since the adoption of the simultaneous accreditation and voting, the commission had conducted 194 off season elections and had deployed the same process in all the elections.

He spoke yesterday during an audience with the Commonwealth Observer Mission to Nigeria led by former Tanzanian President, Dr Jakaya Kikwete in Abuja.

He also informed the 2019 Commonwealth Observer team that the simultaneous accreditation and voting has been enshrined in the Regulations and Guidelines for conduct of this year’s elections.

The INEC chairman recalled that the report of the 2015 Commonwealth Observer Mission contained 32 recommendations as well as identified institutions that should implement those recommendations.

Yakubu stated that out of the eight recommendations proposed to be implemented by INEC, the commission, after studying the report, implemented some administratively while those that require amendment of the constitution or the electoral act would have to go through legislative process.

He said: “The last Commonwealth Observer Mission had recommended that we should abolish that system that archaic system, that as citizens or voters are accredited, they should be able to vote at the same time and we have implemented this re commendation way back in January 2016 when we conducted one of the governorship elections in this country.

“Since then, we have conducted 194 off season elections and all have been conducted on the basis of simultaneous accreditation and voting or what you call continuous accreditation and voting.

“It didn’t require an amendment to the electoral legal framework for the commission to continue with the system of accreditation and voting.

“For that reason, the commission used its powers under the electoral act to make Regulations and Guidelines. It’s now in regulations for the conduct of 2019 general elections. The method of voting will be continuous accreditation and voting.”

Leader of the team and former President of Tanzania, Dr Jakaya Kikwete, said the team had come for an update on the preparations made by the commission.

In a statement, Dr. Kiwete said the mission will be impartial in its assessment of the elections, adding that an interim statement on its preliminary observations will be issued on February 18.

He said the18-man observers were drawn from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

The observers have a mandate to observe the opening, voting, closing, counting and the results management processes.

According to the statement, this year’s election will be the sixth time a Commonwealth Observer Group will be monitoring elections in Nigeria since 1999.

He said: “Our group was constituted following an invitation from the Independent National Election Commission, drawing together 18 eminent persons from across the different regions of the Commonwealth, including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

“We come in our own individual capacities, bringing a wide range of expertise in the areas of election administration, political development, law, human rights, civil society, gender, youth, as well as media.

“As a group, we are here to observe the organization and conduct of the election process as a whole, and will form an impartial and independent assessment of its credibility.

“The Commonwealth Observer Group will consider the pre-election period, polling day itself, as well as the post-election period. Our main task is to assess whether the elections have been conducted according to the national, regional and international standards to which Nigeria has committed itself, including its own laws.

“On election day, we will observe the opening, voting, closing, counting and the results management processes.”

It also said it will submit a final report to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, and thereafter share with the Federal Government, INEC, political parties and the Commonwealth governments before making it public.

The group expressed hope that its presence will confirm the unwavering solidarity of the Commonwealth with Nigeria as the country conducts the elections.

The group, however, encouraged all citizens to “play their part in ensuring peaceful and credible elections this weekend.”

  • Bukola Saraki’s empire must collapse, Tinubu tells Kwarans

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress(APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has told Kwarans to work towards breaking the hold of Senate President Bukola Saraki, who he accused of holding them captive for years.

He said the state will be rescued from Saraki, who he described as a traitor and serial betrayer.

Tinubu spoke on Monday during the presidential rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “This is celebration of Kwara state’s freedom. It’s been long they have been swindling your collective patrimony. And Bukola Saraki is being that.

“We are not here for conspiracy. We are not here to quarrel with the Saraki dynasty as Gbemisola Saraki is with us.

“She is a scion of the Sarakis. We are here to reject overlordship. We are here to say no to Bukola’s enslavement. He is a betrayal. We are chastising Bukola Saraki. This is the celebration of the fall of Berlin Wall.

“This is the celebration of the end to oligarchy; the Emperor that has been existing for years.”

National Chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiohmole told the crowd of supporters that the end of Saraki dynasty had come.

“For Bukola it is finished. I cannot wait till Saturday for Kwara people to celebrate their new found freedom. Also it will be a day for Kwara people and for Nigerian politicians that the evil that their political son has done to their political father has befallen him.

“Suffice to say that for 16 years Bukola has underdeveloped Kwara and has controlled governor more than the master controls his cook.

“He has reduced Kwarans to mere beggars in their own political and economic life.

“The confession of Bukola Saraki after his defection from APC exposes him as a selfish politician. To him politics is about juicy jobs.

“That is why I am happy to be here to see the actual translation of enough is enough.

“Everything that has a beginning must have an end. It is the day the people that have been at the receiving make up their mind to confront the oppressors that the oppression is over.

“That is the case of Kwara and the case of Bukola. I join you the people of Kwara to celebrate your new found freedom.”

Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed said: “on

November 17th by-election I said our party has broken the Berlin wall of Kwara politics.

“I said then that we will repeat the same thing during the 2019 elections.

“The elections are now here. It is time to retire those who have held the state down and make our people and our state very poor.

“They have been deceiving the people. They have been blaming the Federal Government for their failure.

“When they can’t pay workers’ salaries they blame the Federal

Government, when they cannot provide road they blame the Federal Government. Voting them is giving them license to continue to loot.

“They say the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has not done anything in Kwara state. Tell them it is a big lie.”

He reeled out the major infrastructural achievements of the government in the state.

State chairman of APC Bashir Bolarinwa said the state under the Saraki oligarchy had been underdeveloped, saying “as a first generation state our infrastructure and institutions do not depict our status.

“We unfortunately are too behind other states created much later. It is a pity. We prayed, we hoped and made a decision that we are indeed tired of this group of reincarnate of the biblical Pharaoh.

“But Kwarans have decided that our own Pharaoh must let Kwara go.

“Today’s rally is a culmination of our collective resolve of people to declare and let it resonate clearly that ‘enough is enough’ indeed.

Political thugs on Monday disrupted the Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) rally at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta.

The thugs believed to have sympathies for a party went around the stadium chasing away supporters of the APC governorship candidate in the state, Dapo Abiodun.

Many of them were injured in the process with those adorning the yellow attire of Abiodun specifically targeted.

The thugs were armed with dangerous weapons, forcing Abiodun’s supporters to run for safety.

Oshiomhole had hardly spoken for a minute before they started throwing stones at the stage, forcing officials to appeal to him to stop.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun took the microphone appealing to the violent supporters to calm down before Vice President Yemi Osinbajo took over.

Osinbajo, an indigene of the state, appealed for support, promising the Buhari-led administration will uplift the people.

  • PDP kicks against alleged clampdown on members

The People’s Democratic Party ( PDP ) has kicked against what it described as the on-going clampdown, unlawful arrest and detention of its officials and members in various parts of the country.

Accusing the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of instigating the clampdown, the PDP viewed the development as highly provocative and a direct invitation to anarchy and a political crisis capable of derailing the democratic order.

At a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, the PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, expressed concern over the arrest of the Director of Media Committee of the Kaduna State PDP Governorship Campaign Organization, Mr. Ben Bako.

Bako has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since weekend.

Ologbondiyan said, “We are aware that Mr. Ben Bako’s arrest is prelude to the planned clampdown on our campaign officials by the Buhari Presidency and the APC, whose aim is to instil fear in the polity, incite crisis and derail the electoral process, having realised that they have lost in this election ahead of the polls.

“It is instructive to state that the DSS has given no reason for Mr. Ben Bako’s arrest and detention, but only acted on the orders of the APC as expressed by the Assistant Publicity Secretary of Kaduna APC, Salisu Tanko Wusono, who openly stated that Mr. Bako deserved his ordeal”

The PDP spokesman said reports reaching the party indicated that some prominent chieftains of the party in Kaduna State have been marked for arrest and detention.

Among those listed as being targeted for arrest include two former Governors of the state, Ahmed Makarfi and Ramalan Yero.

Also listed were the chairman of the Kaduna chapter of the PDP, Chief Felix Hyat and a former chairman of the chapter, Alhaji Yahaya Makama, who the party spokesman alleged were being trailed by agents of the APC.

“We have also been informed of plots by the APC and the Buhari Presidency to track down and detain PDP critical stakeholders in other parts of the country, so as to put them out of circulation before and during the general elections.

“However, the PDP unequivocally cautions the Buhari Presidency and the APC to note that their plot, as well as the continued detention of Ben Bako, is setting the stage for a vehement resistance by the people, which is capable of triggering crisis and disrupting the fragile peace in Kaduna state.

“The PDP therefore demands the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Ben Bako by the DSS without hurt or further harassment,” Ologbondiyan added.

The main opposition party said it would hold the APC and the Buhari Presidency directly responsible should any harm befall any of its leaders or members, particularly in Kaduna State ahead of the elections.

Describing Kaduna State as a stronghold of the PDP, the party vowed never to stomach any further harassment of its leaders, officials and members; before, during and after the general elections.

It called on the National Peace Committee to note and speak out against the alleged provocations by the APC and the Buhari Presidency against its party, in contravention of the spirit and letters of the peace accord.

“The PDP states this because Nigeria belongs to all of us and we will not hesitate to call out our members, in their millions, should this aggression by the APC and the Buhari Presidency against our party is not curbed,” Ologbondiyan said.

  • Tension in Ogun as thugs disrupt Presidential rally

    Sacks Abiodun’s Supporters from Stadium

Scores of hoodlums chanting the slogan of a rival opposition governorship candidate on Monday disrupted the Presidential rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and sacked supporters of the Prince Dapo Abiodun, the governorship candidate of APC, from the main bowl of the MKO stadium, Abeokuta

Other APC members and supporters seated awaiting the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari for planned rally, were also chased away as the thugs hurled stones, shoes and other dangerous weapons at them.

Many were injured in the attacks, forcing thousands of people to leave the stadium while the President is yet to arrive.

In less than 10 minutes, all the seats and positions occupied by Dapo Abiodun supporters and other APC members were deserted as stones and objects hurled by the hoodlums, fell on them in torrents.

Some of the hoodlums were overheard brazenly boasting “this is Ogun and nobody can intimidate us” while throwing stones at the fleeing APC members and supporters of Abiodun.

Not even the announcement of the arrival of the wife of the Vice – President, Dolapo Osinbajo, at the time could elicit respite to the reign of terror unleashed on people.

Outside the stadium, dozens of armed soldiers and other security agencies battled to prevent the entry of another batch of hoodlums who were allegedly hurried to the venue to reinforce their colleagues who had seized the main bowl of the main stadium.

Many were appalled that a Fuji musician called to entertain at the occasion, prodded the hoodlums on with inciting lyrics even as those who ought to ensure orderliness at the venue acted as though they were on holiday.

There was palpable concern over the safety of the APC chieftains such as Senator Gbenga Kaka, Abiodun’s running mate, Noimot Oyedele – Salako, Chief Tolu Odebiyi and others, with many wondering if they were able to leave the stadium unscathed.

  • Understanding Nwodo’s obsession and Ihejirika’s wasted years

Chief John Nnia Nwodo, the President General, Ohanaeze Ndi’gbo, the pan-Igbo socio-cultural organization, most times rants like a confused comical fellow. When elders are barren of wisdom, it spells doom for those who have entrusted leadership in their hands.
It is regrettable that parts of Nigeria are assailed by insecurity problems, especially terrorism. But  Nwodo’s worthiest suggestions that could probably assist in extricating the country from this security quagmire is a sermon of hate, divisiveness and ethnicity.
There is every need to reexamine the thinking faculties of Nwodo. Probably, senility is causing some serious damages to the senses of this supposed leader of the great  Igbo nation.
Just recently, Nwodo granted a media interview and unabashedly, struck the portrait of a cheap ethnic warlord. He dispensed himself as a leader whose capacity is not beyond the prism of comprehending national issues from an infantile standpoint of ethnicity or sectionalism.
No one faults Nwodo for failing to see the impact of the counter-terrorism and insurgency operations in Nigeria today. There is a remarkable difference as evidenced now under President Muhammadu Buhari through the sacrifices of Nigerian troops commanded by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and leader of the counter-insurgency operations, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai.
    But it is usually difficult to compel men with mindsets like that of  Nwodo to perceive issues impartially. Now, commanded dwarf these efforts by Nigeria Army,  Nwodo, through playing the ethnic card barked irrational and, absurd comments. He derides the very essence of the ideals of nationhood.  In the media interview, Nwodo reduced his entire worth as a leader by emitting the gibberish that;
“If you are a Fulani and you are a Chief of Army Staff you absurd comments ever. When your tenure finishes it can be elongated, something that has never happened in the history of our country and does not have any justjustificationany establishment law that we know.”
And to demonstrate that Nwodo has pathetically lost control of his senses, he applied the ethnic balm in scolding President Buhari on the emergence of the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Ibrahim Tanko  Muhammad, after the inglorious exit of the former CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen.
Nwodo said, “There is one law for some people and another law for the others. If you are a Fulani, you can become Chief Justice of Nigeria, whether you went to our normal law inglorious or you went to Sharia school.”
With this outburst, Nwodo expressly displayed a piteous ignorance, propelled by a man whose vision and understanding is severely blighted by the blind passion for ethnicity. Can someone remind Nwodo that leadership succession in the judiciary is strictly on a seniority basis?
And what tells Nwodo, the Acting CJN,  Muhammad is a Fulani?  A Justice who had his bachelor’s degree in Law; proceeded to Law School;  was called to Bar in 1981  and parades Masters and Doctorate (Ph. D) degrees from the prestigious Ahprestigiouso University (ABU) Zaria is qualified by Nwodo as unfit?
But where Nwodo backstabbed himself is the perceptive failure to realize the marvellous job Nigerian troops under the leadership of Gen. Buratai. Nwodo has chosen to forget that the positive results posted by Gen. Buratai in the counter-insurgency operations were never contemplated by his kinsman, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika who was the COAS for nearly four years. Same can be said of Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah both Southerners, who inherited Boko Haram debacle at its embryonic stage, but rather allowed it fester uncontrollably.
What Gen. Buratai achieved notably in the decimation and defeat of Boko Haram insurgents in less than two years was not feasible when Ihejirika and another Southerner, Gen.  Minimah commanded troops against insurgents for nearly six years put together.
Nigeria had it worse under the reign of these Southern Army Chiefs, who went to bed when terrorists roasted Nigerians every day. If ethnicity or sectionalism should be the yardstick of appointing Army Chiefs, what did his kinsman, Gen. Ihejirika or, Minimah do when insurgents abducted 276  Chibok schoolgirls at a boarding hostel in Borno state. That over 100 of these Chibok schoolgirls have regained freedom is under the reign of Gen. Buratai. This is a soldiers serious with his assignment.
Unfortunately, Ihejirika and Minimah spent useful time debating the political forces which orchestrated the abduction of the Chibok girls, while terrorists successfully fled soldier to hideous camps as hostages. But the Nigerian troops led by Gen. Buratai immediately ransacked where 109 Dapchi schoolgirls were abducted by terrorists and rescued almost all of them.
Nwodo has forgotten that under Ihejirika, Nigeria had the worse and embarrassing moments with terrorists. Sad memories of terrorist exploits such as the historic Baga massacres, where an estimated 300 Nigerians were killed; the Nyanya motor park bomb explosions, the UN Building, the Police Headquarters’, the shopping mall in Wuse and many others were the signposts of the work of Nwodo’s sectional brothers from the South. But no Boko Haram bomb has exploded in Abuja since Gen. Buratai took over.
In 2014, Nigeria was embarrassed by Cameroun authorities for repatriating 480 troops back to the country who shirked from insurgents during a battle at a border town of Gambaru from what Army authorities shamelessly claimed it was “tactical manoeuvre.” Gen. Buratai has no such debasing records. So, who has performed better in securing Nigeria against terrorists?
It was under the Army’s leadership by these perceived Southerners that over 13, 000 were killed by insurgents in three years; over 20,000 were held hostage by terrorists and Boko Haram seized and occupied 17 LGAs in the Northeast in spite of the declaration of the state of emergency. The troops led by Gen. Buratai has reclaimed all the 17 LGAs under Boko Haram captivity and rescued over 16,000 Nigerians secretly held hostage by insurgents at various camps.
Ihejirika and the troops he commanded drread Sambisa forest, the safe haven of Boko Haram, now factional leader, Abubakar Shekau; but Gen. Buratai has demystified it by penetrating it to Camp Zero. So, if this is not effective leadership and hard work which deserves to be rewarded or qualify for elongation of tenure, then, Nwodo should cover his face in shame.
Maybe Nwodo was asleep and could not notice the poor performance of his ethnic or politicized security appointments  or their helplessness  in countering insurgency in Nigeria. These are irrefutable records.
It is absolutely pointless to vilify Gen. Buratai who came, took the bull by tthe horns and has proved his mettle beyond doubts Buratai crippled the capacity of terrorists to strike recklessly and confined insurgents operations to the remotest parts of the Lake Chad appointments oris easyarchitecture in warlords like Nwodo  to pass negative comments on the security architecture in tthe country under the Buhari Presidency.
But it completely farcical for anyone, such as  John Nnia Nwodo who sees nothing good in the office of the Chief of Army Staff to seek emptily berate a performing and hardworking hard working like Buratai.
Nigerians don’t care if Gen Buratai spends six-years as Chief of Army Staff, as long as he is winning the war on terror. What Nigerians want is result and that’s exactly what Gen. Buratai symbolizes in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the country. Nwodo’s argument for a politicized or ethnicized COAS is therefore watery, inconsequential and feeble to attract attention.
