Basketmouth urges colleagues to stop begging for money on stage

Popular Nigerian comedian Basketmouth has urged younger comedians to refrain from soliciting money while performing on stage.

In a candid moment during a recent podcast appearance, the comedian expressed his frustration with the growing trend, which he believes diminishes the art of stand-up comedy.

“All these new guys coming up, if you can stop begging for money on stage, that will do us good. Just go on stage and perform. Crack a joke and get out. I’m pissed off with how you guys have watered down the art,” Basketmouth said.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining professionalism during performances, adding that comedians should focus on delivering their material instead of engaging in the culture of hailing the audience in the hope of receiving money.

“Just go on stage and perform. Why are you hailing people and asking them to spray you money? If you want to beg, go to the streets,” he continued.

Basketmouth also shared a personal experience that further fueled his annoyance. “I was performing somewhere recently and someone started spraying me with money. I was pissed!” he revealed, clearly irritated by the incident.

  • KellyRae: Journey to stardom in 71 days

KellyRae: Journey to stardom in 71 days

“I had no idea I was going to win, I was just praying to stay for the first and second week at least,” were the words of Sule Kingston Oritsetimeyin, aka KellyRae, who won the night edition of Big Brother Naija tagged No Loose Guard.

In an exclusive interview following his triumphant win on the reality show, KellyRae opened up about his journey, his strategies, and the impact of his victory.

Kelly Rae’s story resonated deeply with fans across Nigeria and it won him the show. His reflections on his time in the house and his strategic decisions offer a closer look at the man behind the public persona.

One of the more intriguing aspects of Kelly Rae’s strategy was his decision to conceal his marital status. This move sparked debates among viewers and housemates alike. “That wasn’t a strategy to get me to the final,” Kelly Rae explained. “It was a strategy for me and my wife, to be able to connect with people because you saw there were times where I danced with Onyeka, Handi  and some other girls during the parties. If I had come in as a married man, you saw how the girls were giving Tjay space, they were not dancing with him. The guys wouldn’t have danced with my wife, they wouldn’t have been free. I didn’t want that, I wanted to connect, I wanted friends in the house, yes. I had intentions to actually tell them later, so it was not a strategy to get me to the final.”

Despite not expecting to win, he remained true to himself, focusing on leaving a lasting impact. “I was just praying to stay for the first and second week at least. Because if we had left the first week, in my head, what are we leaving behind and what are we leaving with? Like we have to leave with something and we have to leave something behind because even if we leave with all the money, it is what we leave behind that people will have to talk about and those are the things that open more doors for us.”

When asked why he thought he might not win, Kelly Rae said, “Because of what I’ve heard about Big Brother Naija, the kind of content that people love. I thought people like Wanni, Handi, Onyeka, maybe the Mbadiwe twins and those people who were in ships in the house, yeah. So I was just doing my thing, I was just being me.”

When asked about his financial situation before winning, Kelly Rae was frank. “I won’t lie to you. I have made millions, but I’ve never had one million like this in my account at once. But if I have to calculate, I know I’ve spent millions, but I’ve never had one physical, like physical once, it has never happened,” he admitted. “There are things about maturing into the thing you have faith about. So, I’ve taken my time to mature into it. So, don’t worry, I’ll still take my time. I’ll still sleep, wake up,  and I’ll process everything.”

Reflecting on his time in the house, Kelly Rae shared that he faced no significant challenges. “Honestly, I had no challenge, because everything that happened in the house, like I even told someone like Topher and some other housemates, before Big Brother would do some things, I would tell them to expect some things to happen, not like I saw them happen in previous shows, but my instinct just told me things were going to happen and I was ready for anything that would come,” he said.

Describing his feelings when his name was called as the winner, Kelly Rae admitted that he is still processing the moment. “Even till now, my brain is still processing,” he confessed. “Last night I could not sleep, I swear. I was rolling, I could not sleep. At some point, I’ll look in the mirror. At some point, I told myself, okay, being a millionaire looks good on you, though.  Someone who, from nothing, and then, boom, N60 million, my own IVM, so it’s been God.”
