“Fela was a model father; he was very different from the stories I heard of my elder ones. I feel bad for them. I can’t lie. I tell them all the time, I enjoyed it for you guys. Trust me, I held it down. I did not slack. By the time he had me, he was 44; he was always home, so my relationship with him was very different from that of my siblings very, very different. I know that for a fact”, he said.

Speaking on how the death of his father took a toll on him, Seun detailed his experience and how difficult it was for him to heal and recover from the tragic loss.

Losing him was a different kind of pain from which he had not recovered because nobody was as close to him as he was.

He added that the loss was so heavy for him that he grieved for a long period.

“I grieved for my dad because he was the closest person to me, and he was the first person I know that died, so for me, it was a really impactful experience losing my dad; it was like losing my best friend, my dad, and a family member, all in one. I really grieved for a long time. I grieved for my dad.”, he said.

Additionally, he said he wasn’t able to grieve his mother properly when she passed away because he was on a music tour at the time.

In his words: “The one I didn’t grieve was my mom. I had a tour. There was no time to break down. If I’m going to share some of my mental issues on your show, it’s like I think I’m grieving my mom in stages; kind of, I’ve not really had time to really delve into that, but the bad part is past, and I still grieve her from time to time. I don’t have complete closure for my mom like I do for my dad.”

Tinubu my political mentor fought for democracy – Seun Kuti

Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has opened up on his relationship with President Bola Tinubu, stating that he had known him for many years.

He revealed that President Tinubu was his political mentor while growing up.

The son of late afrobeats legend, Fela Kuti disclosed this while speaking on his relationship with the President in a recent interview with a media personality, Chude Jideonwo.

He recalled that Tinubu was a leading member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) that fought for democracy after the military annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election assumingly won by Chief MKO Abiola.

Kuti said: “My relationship with President Tinubu on a personal level is very robust. I grew up knowing him as an uncle. He was a very good friend of uncle Beko (Kuti). He was a political mentor to me growing up as a child.

“Many of the ideas that I understand today, it was these men that taught me as a child growing up. Knowing them fighting for democracy in this country with NADECO, even when Tinubu went on exile… Wole Soyinka, uncle Beko, Asiwaju, these were the men who fought for our democracy.

“During Tinubu’s first term as Governor of Lagos State, I performed at all his rallies. I’ve always been close to him personally. But I don’t have any political relationship with him. And even at that, I don’t think it’s anybody’s business. I’ve not been to his house in years except when I need to see him for national issues.

“So, these things that people say are just to tarnish your image. They make it seem like everybody must be paid for what they’re saying. No, no, no. What’s the truth is the truth. And I say it regardless of fear or favour of anybody”.
