  • You’re a warrior, Yul Edochie tells Funke Akindele

You’re a warrior, Yul Edochie tells Funke Akindele

Actor and film director, Yul Edochie has written a note of encouragement to his colleague, Funke Akindele over her decision to remove all campaign pictures from her Instagram page following her defeat alongside her party in the March 18 gubernatorial election.

Akindele was the running mate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Lagos State governorship candidate, Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran aka Jandor.

While Jandor, won at his polling unit, 001 located in Irewe, polling 87 votes beating the APC candidate who secured 66 votes; Akindele, lost her polling unit 019 in Ita Aro square, Ikorodu, after garnering 19 votes against APC‘s 77.

Though she said that she had no regrets about running for political office noting the journey to the ballot was an eye opener, she, however, deleted all her campaign posters and politics-related posts.

But her colleague, Yul recounted his experience when he contested for governorship in 2017, and encouraged Akindele not to be put down by her loss at the poll.

He suggested that her decision to delete all posts about her political joinery and exploit was not the best as they are part of her battle scars as a warrior.

Yul, referring to the mother of two as a warrior, urged her to wear her battle scars proudly.

He added just like he still anticipates being the president of Nigeria someday, Akindele shouldn’t despair because she would also hold a political office in the future.

He said: “To my dear colleague, @funkejenifaakindele. I want to congratulate you for the bold political step you took, running for Deputy Governor of Lagos State. You did great.

“I noticed you deleted all your campaign pictures from your Instagram page. Of course, I can’t sit in my house and know your reason for doing so, neither is it my business. But as a concerned colleague and friend I want to encourage you and through you encourage others out there.

“A warrior is always proud of his or her battle scars. The scars are proof that he or she went to battle and came back alive. You’re a warrior.

“Your campaign pictures are part of your battle scars. Wear them proudly. Those pictures deserve to remain on your page forever. It’s a historical moment for you. A rare privilege.

“No matter what anybody says to you. Don’t be discouraged by those who are laughing at you for not winning. Na childish brain dey worry dem. Cowards will always laugh at the brave ones. That’s the only way they console themselves for being cowards.

When they grow up they’ll laugh at themselves for not having the courage to try what you did.

“There are no failures in life as long as you never give up. It’s either you win or you learn. The person who fails is that person who has not tried at all.

“Out of the millions of Lagosians you were picked to be Deputy Governorship candidate. It’s a human and spiritual honor to be given the opportunity to serve the people. It marks the beginning of your political journey. Never give up.

“In 2017 I ran for Governor of my state, from start to finish and it’s one of the best things I’ve done in my life. One of my proudest moments. I learnt a lot. My campaign pictures are still on my page, my battle scars. I wear those scars proudly. And I’ll never give up. One day I’ll be the President of Nigeria.

“Funke, you will sit in your office someday as Deputy Governor or Governor or President and look at your first campaign pictures and you’ll have tears of joy in your eyes. You will be proud of your journey. Never give up. I wish you the very best. May God lead you always. Cheers.”

AFRIFF COO Ukpaa discusses business of filmmaking at Coal City Film Festival

Teo Ukpaa, the Chief Operations Officer for Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), recently joined Nollywood practitioners to discuss the business of filmmaking at the Coal City International Film Festival.

Ukpaa joined other facilitators that include Izu Ojukwu, and Chichi Nwoko for the Masterclass session on business of filmmaking at the film festival.

According to Theo “Often times people focus merely on the show and glamor as well as the razzmatazz that comes with filmmaking, and end up dying broke. A strong national economy depends on a strong creative economy – and it all starts with a story. The film and television industry supports 2.4 million jobs, pays out $186 billion in total wages, and comprises over 122,000 businesses.”

Continuing, Ukpaa said, “As a Filmmaker, one of the best moments is directing real stories of real individuals, getting them to the big screens and smiling to the Bank”. He believes that passion can burn out when expenditure and hard work does not produce financial returns.” These are part of the important basics he wants to teach at his Masterclass at the coal city film Festival.

Theo Ukpaa is an African filmmaker, playwright, and entrepreneur.

  • Filmmaker urges Nigerians to embrace peace

Filmmaker urges Nigerians to embrace peace

Following skirmishes that rocked the just concluded elections, filmmaker Chris Oge –Kalu has called on Nigerians to embrace and spread the message of peace beyond the elections.

This call was made by Oge –Kalu at the Peace For Free lecture series recently held in Lagos in Lagos State.

Kalu who is the convener of the event, with the theme: Sustainable Peace Beyond Elections said the need for Nigerians to embrace peace is essential in the move to avoid conflict over election.

“First of all, I am a Nigerian and the election you are talking about took place in Nigeria. So, I am part and parcel of the Nigerian society, if Nigeria burns, I will burn. At this point, in order to ensure that we don’t burn, we have to come out from where we are, from whatever profession we belong to and embark on a noble cause like this to ensure we don’t burn.”

Continuing, he said, “The thing is this, the recipe for a peaceful coexistence of a united Nigeria is the ability to look beyond primordial sentiment because there is no society that does not have conflict. It can emanate from anywhere; it can be tribal, ethnic, religious but in our case, sometimes we take it out of context because of the kind of small things we hear. You have to remain resolute to the cause of one Nigeria. We have to embrace peace because it is a peaceful society that will allow us to think how to progress in the first place but in the midst of chaos, you cannot think of anything. The takeaway on this Peace for Free series we are embarking upon is to see that people understand that this is a democratic process.”
