“With the recent global explosion of African music, I needed to include some contemporary sounds. I fell in love with Rema’s “Calm Down.” It has a unique flow and feel, not mimicking Western pop; it is rooted in Africa but also catchy and virtuosic. I love to sing it.

Father figures key to women’s childhood stability – Seyi Shay

Singer Seyi Shay has revealed why the presence of a father in a girl child’s life is immeasurable.

In an interview on Honest Bunch podcast, Seyi said having a father figure can significantly contribute to a child’s stability and access to better opportunities.

She argued that father figures provide guidance, moral values, and set standards for relationships and friendships, which can positively impact a child’s development and future.

Seyi Shay expressed concerns about the narrative that men are not important in the home, calling it an agenda that creates disparity and division within families.

She opined that this can lead to more broken individuals and emphasises the value of having a father figure in a child’s life.

She said: “Most women that have a father figure are generally more stable growing up. They have a lot more access to a lot more things like good education, good moral values and there’s a bar when they want to get married or when they choose male friends and stuff like that.

“All this agenda pushing of men are not important. You can do this. I think it’s bullshit because that’s just an agenda placed for there to be more disparity and more division in a home so that we can churn out more broken souls or more lost females and males”.

The mother of one credits her life experiences and the timing of her motherhood for allowing her to be a better parent to her daughter.

According to her, she sees herself as her daughter’s “cheat code,” able to provide guidance and share her experiences to help her daughter avoid some of the challenges she faced.

“Look at me. I’m just so very lucky that I didn’t have a child when I was like 20 or 23 because my daughter would probably grow up to be a mess. Like, having her at this age means that I’m her cheat code.

“It means that I’m able to, like, put her on to certain things and she can avoid certain routes that I took. Because I’ve done them. I’ve been through them. I can tell her all about guys, all about certain friends and how and why and be real and honest with her, and hopefully she will be 10 million times better than me without having to also go through the tribulations and trials that I’ve been through.

“And there are a lot of women like that, you know, today. And there are young mothers as well that are entrepreneurs,,” she added.

Comedian and actor Bovi has clarified his relationship with fellow comedian Basketmouth, saying there is no bad blood between them but that their paths have naturally diverged due to evolving interests.

In an interview, Bovi explained that his focus on family and career growth has pushed him to explore new creative outlets, particularly in the film industry.

He added that his tendency to get bored with routine has fueled his drive to try new things, build his personal brand, and establish himself as a standalone force in comedy.

“You get what I’m saying. Interests changed, especially for me. You know, I wanted to focus more, spend more time with my family.

“I wanted to also elevate myself. I easily get bored with things. So when I’m doing something for too long, I try to do something else”.

Bovi also shared his thoughts on financial independence, mentioning that he wants to capitalise on his own success rather than sharing profits with others.

He used the analogy of filling up a hotel to illustrate his point, stating that he can reap the benefits of his own endeavors without needing to collaborate with others.

According to Bovi, this shift in focus has allowed him to grow both professionally and financially.

“You know, so as you know, I started to do films. I went back to TV, and then I wanted to build my own brand in the sense that I needed people. I needed the world to know that I can stand with the mic endlessly by myself and talk. You know, also, there’s the, I also started to think of stuff like when I blow the whistle and say, I’m having an Eko hotel, it fills up. So why should I go and share money? Why should we be many doing one show? And then I guess I can keep all the money myself”, he added.

Seyi Law reflects on 20 years in comedy industry

Comedian Seyi Law has shared his two-decade journey in the comedy industry, highlighting the sacrifices he made to achieve success.

In an interview with HipTV, he recounted how he left his uncle’s home in Orile to live with his aunt in Ebute Metta, Lagos, in search of better access to performance opportunities.

Driven by determination, Seyi toured several universities, including Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, Olabisi Onabanjo University, UNILAG, and LASU, where he performed at social events to hone his craft.

Reflecting on his career, he said, “It’s been 20 years, and there have been a lot of sacrifices to get to where I am today. But when success comes, you most times forget the sacrifices. Like they say, a day of joy erases years of sorrow.”

“One of the things I did when I joined the comedy business was to leave my comfort zone. That time I was staying with my uncle in Orile, and I left there to stay with my Aunty, who lived in Ebute Meta. It wasn’t so much of a comfortable place, but I went there to have proximity to certain places.

“As we were growing, I had called Emeka Smith, who was my friend, to make certain moves. One of them is to leave Lagos and go to universities to seek opportunities to perform at their different social events. I remember we left Lagos to go to Obafemi Awolowo University, and those times we didn’t really have a place to sleep, and couldn’t afford a hotel.

“We slept in study theatres and looked for where to take a shower in the morning, strolled around during the day, came back, and repeated until we got the opportunity to perform at different places. We did the same thing at the University of Ibadan, Olabisi Onabanjo University, UNILAG, and LASU. One time at a LASU law dinner, 9ice came to perform, and I had to back up for 9ice.”

Inspired by veteran comedian Ali Baba, Seyi Law said he decided to mentor younger talents, providing them with support and opportunities.

He added, “I also decided to bring a lot of people to my comfort zone because I learnt that from Ali Baba and his ability to bring young comedians together.

“I also decided to do that as soon as I got my own apartment, a room, and a parlour. I had several comedians who came to live with me, even when I moved to Ikorodu. They’re all big boys now.

“For some musicians, my shows outside Nigeria became their avenue to get their first visas. It was probably my show that gave Kizz Daniel his first visa, Adekunle Gold, and Arole, who always talks about it”.
