MCSN floors hospitality outfits in court over use of copyright works

Barely three weeks after the Audio Visual Rights Society (AVRS) of Nigeria won a legal battle against hospitality outfits over the use of copyrighted works by its members, the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria Ltd/Gte (MCSN) has also won against some hospitality outfits in court.

The attempts by certain users of copyright works to stop Collective Management Organizations (CMO) from licensing them are falling flat on their faces in the courtroom.

In the case of the Bolton White Hotels, Johnwood Hotels Limited and Bolton Apartment vs Musical Copyright Society Nigeria Ltd/Gte (MCSN) in the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, presided over by Honourable Justice Emeka Nwite, the court ruled that the action was entirely incompetent and it was accordingly dismissed.

The Applicants, Bolton White Hotels, Johnwood Hotels Limited and Bolton White Apartments had obtained an interim order preventing MCSN from licensing them for use of musical works and sound recording in their hotels.

The Plaintiff had asked the Court to restrain MCSN whether by itself, servants, privies, successor- in- title, or any one or organization/agency howsoever acting through them or on their behalf, from harassing, intimidating, threatening, and compelling the Plaintiff to enter into contractual relationship with them by forcibly subscribing and procuring from the Respondent, a Copyright Licence which the Plaintiffs do not need for the transaction of their business. The Applicants also sought an interlocutory order of the Court restraining the MCSN from forcing or compelling the plaintiffs to submit to their demands to all together pay the sum of Sixty-four Million, Four Hundred and Three thousand, Six Hundred and Thirty-Four Naira, Fifty-Seven Kobo (64,403,634.57) for which there is no basis.

The Applicants, in addition, based their action on the fact that having subscribed or paid subscriptions to pay-tv, they require no further licence to use music received through pay-tv in their hotel business.

In reaction to the Motion on Notice, the Respondent’s counsel on February 3, 2025 filed 34 paragraphs Counter Affidavit and formulated a sole issue for determination, to wit: Whether having regard to the circumstance of the case, the Applicants are entitled to the reliefs sought?

However after the arguments, Justice Emeka Nwite, agreed with the Counsel to the Respondent and found the suit unmeritorious and consequently struck out the application.

  • Naira Marley: Innocent in the court of public?

Naira Marley: Innocent in the court of public?

On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Azeez Fashola aka Naira Marley opened up on his relationship with ex-signee, Promise Aloba aka Mohbad, who passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

The tell-it-all kind of video from Naira Marley is coming barely 25 days to the second remembrance of Mohbad’s death.

On the allegation of bullying the late singer, Naira Marley plainly said, “I’ve never sent anybody to bully him.” He went further to deny ever bullying the late Mohbad at any point of their relationship.

In an over one hour video, which was released on the Marlian Music HQ on YouTube, the controversial singer explained his relationship with the late Mohbad as well as how drug addiction and drug abuse seemingly cut short the life of the talented singer at just 27 years old.

In the new video, Naira Marley alleged that on June 7, 2020, he learned that Mohbad was abusing an illegal substance called Ice in a bid to battle stress.

“He told me he was taking a substance which I finally found out to be Ice (crack). I wasn’t angry, I called him and advised him and told him about the danger because I know the damage it has done to people I know from the United Kingdom. He said he got into it because of stress, but said he would stay out of it. I didn’t force him to do anything,” the singer said.

Naira Marley went on to give instances of how Mohbad’s alleged addiction to substance abuse led to his various psychotic states.

He cited an instance of Mohbad’s arrest on February 24, 2022 by officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) alongside Zinoleesky and one Subomi. Naira Marley, who said he was in Sweden at the time, noted that Mohbad was taken along because he had a physical altercation with the officers.

He said, “Mohbad went live (on Instagram) under duress shortly after he was released. While having a panic attack he accused me and others. During the live session, Mohbad said, “’If I die, everybody na Marlian Music, Naira Marley kill me.’

“On their way to the hospital, he also accused his girl, Zino, and a lot of people. He even accused our wives. Shortly after that, whilst in a vulnerable state of psychosis, he made a statement calling Zino a snitch,” Naira Marley disclosed.

Naira Marley said despite the antics, Mohbad, his parents and his partner, Wunmi, apologised for the singer’s actions.

Following his seemingly tell-it-all video, a number of individuals, who had vilified Naira Marley have begun eating the humble pie and expressing their guilt in judging the singer without valid evidence tying him to the death of Mohbad.

Leading the bunch is the founder of an Ibadan-based radio station, Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Oriyomi Hamzat, who had earlier placed a ban on Naira Marley’s songs. Hamzat expressed his apologies on the radio saying, “I am very sorry for all my provocative statements or words to Naira Marley. And now at the Agidigbo radio station, we have lifted our legs up to march Satan and overcome obstacles.”

In the same vein, Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to ex and late President Muhammadu Buhari said those who wrongly accused Naira Marley owe him an apology, at the very least.

It should be noted that Naira Marley had been absolved of any involvement by the police and court in the death of the late Mohbad many months before the video. The question on the lips of many fans after the video remains, is Naira Marley now innocent in the court of the public?

Owolabi Salis expresses shock over Chief Kanran’s death

United States-based lawyer, Owolabi Salis, has expressed shock and disbelief over the passing of Nollywood veteran, Kehinde Olusegun Akinremi aka Chief Kanran.

In a brief chat, Salis narrated a pathetic account of his last minute effort to save the life of the actor whose demise was announced only a few days ago.

Narrating his last moment encounter with the deceased actor, Salis recalled how Chief Kanran had reached out to him for support to which he did at two different times.

“On July 27, he sent two voice notes that he was severely plagued by appendicitis, which had subjected him to intensely unbearable pains, and would therefore need to under-go an urgent medical operation that would cost N700,000 and that he needed N350,000 to balance the hospital bill.

“On the same July 27, I immediately dispatched a sum of N350,000 to him as requested. On July 28, he sent a voice note of appreciation thanking me for my timely kind assistance. On August 1, he sent another voice note of appreciation.”

Salis further said the announcement of the sudden death of Chief Kanran got him completely shattered in an inexpressible shock from which he is yet to recover.

“On learning about the sad news of his death, I had promptly dispatched a sum of money, on August 18 as my token assistance for his burial,” Salis said.

He called on Nollywood and the government including well meaning Nigerians, corporate bodies and notable institutions across the nation, to make fervent effort to immortalise the theater veteran.

He described Chief Kanran’s exit not only as the passing of an era but also shocking, lamentable and devastating.

“Personally for me, Chief Karan captured and hypnotized my imagination, just like the generality of theatre buffs all over – with his amazing skills in those good old days, that his plays became an irresistible staple of recreation for me,even decades after my sojourn in the U.S. till this very moment,” he said.

  • Amplify conference pushes for stronger event production industry

Amplify conference pushes for stronger event production industry

Lagos witnessed a convergence of some of the brightest minds in live event production last week as the Amplify Conference 2025 took centre stage at Zone Tech Park, Gbagada, between August 12, 2025 and August 13, 2025.

Organised by Olusiji Ewedemi, the two-day event, themed “From Hustle to Industry: Building an Efficient Event Production Industry in Africa,” drew producers, sound engineers, lighting experts, set designers, artiste managers, aspiring artistes, and even legal practitioners, with a shared passion for raising industry standards.

Speaking with The Nation, Ewedemi described the gathering as a milestone for the pan-African initiative.

“I like to call this gathering the flagship conference of Amplify. It’s not the first gathering but it’s the first full-grown conference for Amplify,” he said. “Amplify is a pan-African focused project aimed at increasing the quality of live event production in Africa. The industry is not fully tapped, not because talent is lacking, but because the infrastructure and support it needs is insufficient. That gap exists largely because of a lack of knowledge, and that’s why a platform like this is necessary — to start important conversations, encourage collaboration, and build a community.”

The conference featured an impressive lineup of industry experts, including Eunice Adeyemi, Dr. Edward Sunday, Dr. Yemi Amusan, Rotimi Akinfenwa, PD Wallson, Uchenna Ososanya, Charles Duke, Michael Olanrewaju, Akinyemi Ayinoluwa, Joy Igho-Orienru, Itunu Joe, Gilbert Princewill, and Oreoluwa Jejeloye. One of the speakers, Waire Emonefe, General Manager of Mahogany Production and Events, emphasized the importance of recognizing the unsung heroes behind successful shows.

Amplify Conference is a breath of fresh air. Many industry events focus on planners and decorators, but production crews rarely get the spotlight. What this event has done is give a face to those working behind the scenes, and here we are having conversations that affect us directly,” she said.

Over the two days, participants engaged in masterclasses, networking sessions, and panel discussions, all aimed at equipping attendees with tools to enhance the technical and managerial aspects of live event production.
