  • Lack of business knowledge affected many thespians – Odule

Lack of business knowledge affected many thespians – Odule

Veteran actor Dele Odule has lamented the lack of business acumen among early Nollywood actors, saying it cost many of them, including himself, the opportunity to fully commercialize their talents at the peak of their careers.

Speaking in a recent interview, the respected thespian traced the challenge to a general oversight among Yoruba film practitioners who, at the time, prioritized fame over structured financial gain.

“Not involving the business into our craft affected all of us, including myself,” Odule said. “When Toluwani was released, I was among the few who enjoyed stardom. I’m supposed to be very rich because, as at that period, I was being paid more than anyone in the industry after the movie came out.”

Odule noted that his edge in language and youth should have positioned him for greater financial reward. “The charges I was supposed to make were meant to be much more because I had the opportunity of being able to speak some English, which wasn’t really common in our Yoruba movie industry back then and I was also very young at the time,” he explained.

He further revealed that despite not having a university degree at the time, he was widely perceived as highly educated. “Even then, I didn’t have a university certificate, but I was seen as one who had,” adding that “Years later when I went back to school, two of my children met me in school, but I graduated before them.”

Tolu Obey: I began growing grey hair at 14

Tolu Obey, singer and son of legendary juju maestro, Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey, has revealed that he began growing grey hair as early as age 14.

Speaking in a recent chat, the young musician said the transformation started subtly from the front of his head and became more pronounced with time.

“I started having white hair at the age of 14. At that time, it was only at the front of my hair but I usually had a low cut so it wouldn’t be obvious,” he shared.

Tolu further disclosed that the decision to grow out his hair into an afro was inspired by the need to distinguish himself in the music industry after people began using his name to secure performance gigs.

“When I started singing, some people were using my name to get gigs, so I thought of what I could do differently. That was when I decided to keep an afro like my dad used to,” he explained.

Over time, he said, the white hair spread across his head, giving him a distinctive look that many find hard to believe is natural. “Some people think I wear a wig and even try to pull it off. But the hair is God-given. I didn’t apply anything,” he clarified.

Sharing fond memories of his father, the singer recalled how the music icon composed a special song for him at the start of his career. “My dad composed a song for me when I started my music career. He woke me up very early in the morning at 5am and taught me how to sing it. My dad is very nice, gentle and very disciplined,” Tolu said.

  • Meet YouTube Nollywood queens

    Meet YouTube Nollywood queens

Nollywood is entering a new digital era, and Nigerian actresses are taking control like never before. Using YouTube, they’re reaching global audiences, creating their content, and turning their platforms into successful businesses all on their terms.

In the past few years, actresses like Ruth Kadiri, Omoni Oboli, and Bimbo Ademoye have built a stronghold on the platform, producing original content that is raking in millions of views and transforming them from screen stars into full-fledged media entrepreneurs.

    A new kind of spotlight

Once limited by roles handed down by producers and the politics of traditional movie marketing, leading actresses are now seizing the digital reins to tell their stories in the best possible way using YouTube. They’re writing, directing, and financing their productions, everything from short romantic dramas to full-length films and releasing them straight to YouTube audiences. Interestingly, the reigns of the Nollywood actresses have attracted more viewers to the YouTube audience.

Ruth Kadiri’s YouTube channel, Ruth Kadiri Films, is a standout example. Her platform has become a hub for Nigerian drama lovers, featuring emotionally charged stories like ‘Love and the Crown’ and ‘The Girl That Saved Me,’ each attracting millions of views.

Omoni Oboli, a long-standing force in Nollywood, also creates compelling content for the platform while continuing to produce feature films.

Bimbo Ademoye, known for her comedic timing and range, has collaborated on numerous YouTube projects, drawing in a younger digital-savvy crowd.

This direct-to-fan model has become an efficient way to bypass the bureaucracy of the Nigerian movie industry and avoid the financial bottlenecks of streaming platforms like Netflix.

YouTube vs Netflix: The battle for independence

While Netflix has opened Nollywood to international audiences, offering licensing deals and global visibility, it comes with restrictions. Many actresses who have worked with Netflix have little control over distribution timelines, creative decisions, or royalties beyond the initial agreement. YouTube, by contrast, puts everything in the hands of the creator.

YouTube gives Nollywood actresses creative freedom, global reach, and the ability to earn directly by producing and owning their content. It allows them to build personal brands, connect with fans, and control their storytelling without relying on traditional film structures or streaming platforms like Netflix.

With tools like real-time analytics and flexible upload schedules, these actresses can tailor content to audience demands and monetise through ads, sponsorships, and memberships. This direct engagement helps them grow loyal followings and stay relevant in the digital space.

However, YouTube also comes with challenges like unstable earnings, high production costs, algorithm dependency, and piracy. Unlike Netflix’s structured payments and support, success on YouTube requires creators to manage everything on their own, making it both empowering and demanding.

A new wave of Nigerian actresses is using YouTube to take control of their storytelling and build independent brands. The success of creators like Ruth Kadiri, Omoni Oboli, and Bimbo Ademoye shows that Nollywood women are no longer waiting for opportunities to create them.

While Netflix offers global exposure and structure, YouTube gives them creative freedom and direct fan engagement. Many now combine both platforms, using Netflix for reach and YouTube for control and content ownership.

In an industry long dominated by male producers and gatekeepers, Nollywood’s leading ladies are building their tables and sitting at the head. Through YouTube, they’re turning views into value, breaking industry norms, and proving that in the age of digital content, talent combined with strategy is a powerful force.
