  • Ibadan mourns over tragic death of Lekan Abass, wife

The city of Ibadan was thrown into mourning with the sudden death of its illustrious son and daughter, Otunba Lekan Abass and his wife, Folake, in quick succession. Ten days after the Ibadan-based socialite gave up the ghost as a result of cardiac arrest, his wife, who had been in coma for weeks, also died.

Otunba Abass’s death was said to have occurred after a call he received from his sister-in-law telling him that Folake’s health had seriously deteriorated. As he drove to the hospital in company with some friends, Otunba Abass reportedly developed partial stroke. His condition deteriorated so rapidly that he lost control of the car he was driving and it crashed into a wall. The first aid assistance his friends gave was futile as he breathed his last a few metres from the closest hospital.

The tragic incident was compounded by the eventual death of his wife who was said to have fallen into coma after some drugs were administered on her to manage her deep vein thrombosis (blood clot). Folake died penultimate Friday after two weeks in coma.

  • Bukky Osunkeye goes anonymous

Where is Bukky Osunkeye? That is a question that has agitated the minds of many society watchers for some time now. After her ubiquitous face on the social scene, Bukky has for some time now become a scarce item in social circles. Her absence is so total that her whereabouts or current engagement is not even within the realm of speculation.

When Bukky, daughter of Chief Olusegun Osunkeye, a former managing director of Nestle Nigeria Plc, entered the social scene with a bang some years ago, not a few people had thought that the self-driven lady would etch her marks in the social landscape.

And she actually did. She made an immediate impact and leveraged on that momentary buzz to open her T-shirt and leather outfit called De’La Zaria on Sanusi Fafunwa Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. But two years after, the once busy celebrity fashion house was closed down. She then moved to television broadcasting as a co-anchor of Style Me, a fashion television programme, for just a season.

She has since given partying or any social outing a wide berth. No one seems to know what she has been up to lately. Could it be that she has found a place in the corporate sector where her dad was a giant and still pulls the strings as a member of the boards of numerous companies in the private sector?

  • Data Okorodudu Returns

    Data Okorodudu Returns

Data Okorodudu made what sports analysts would call a cameo appearance at an event in Lagos recently, and from what was seen of her, the amiable woman appeared to have come to terms with the reality of her life as a widow. Her once mournful mien had given way to a cheerful disposition, a development that gladdened the hearts of her friends and acquaintances at the occasion.

Since Jeye, her husband and Chairman of Adata Group, died a few years ago, Data had recoiled into her shell. Jeye had succumbed to death after a long battle with leukemia. Data’s spirited efforts to save him from the jaws of death were abortive. Impressively, she is holding firm in the midst of one of life’s scariest moments.

  • Gbenga Daniel, Titi Oseni’s husband shun 50th birthday

Gbenga Daniel, Titi Oseni’s husband shun 50th birthday

Former Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Titi Oseni, celebrated her 50th birthday in Lagos penultimate Friday. It was a high-octane event that brought to the fore the social relevance of a woman who had moved from business to the highly volatile politics of Ogun State before she reverted to private business.

The thanksgiving service was held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, King’s Court, Ikeja, Lagos, while the reception and dinner sessions took place at The Civic Centre, Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. The black tie event was classy and lived up to its billing. Bigwigs from the political and corporate sectors were there to celebrate the urbane first Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly.

But the absence of two men who supposedly played key roles in Titi’s rise to prominence was conspicuous. The absence of her husband, Kunle Oseni, seemed to reinforce the rumour that all had not been well with their 24-year-old marriage. There were reports to the effect that their marriage experienced a strain during Titi’s political sojourn in Ogun State. But Titi, who had her tenure as Speaker truncated with impeachment, once rebuffed the rumour as a figment of the imagination of some wicked rumour mongers. The absence of Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who was instrumental to the rise of Titi to political prominence, also fuelled speculation that the two might have fallen apart.

Tunde Ogbeha celebrates wife at 60

Last Saturday, Senator Tunde Ogbeha kept politics aside to throw a lavish birthday party for his darling wife, Esther Tunde-Ogbeha. It was one event that brought old and new friends of the Ogbehas under one roof to celebrate a woman who has been like a pillar to the Kogi State politician.

Tunde Ogbeha has always spoken of his wife in glowing terms, and he used the occasion of her 60th birthday to show how appreciative of her he has always been. The thanksgiving service was held at the Church of Resurrection on Victoria Island, Lagos. It was followed with a grand reception at the Civic Centre on Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, also on Victoria Island, Lagos. It was a parade of politicians drawn from the two leading political parties in Nigeria, the PDP and the APC.

The Kogi State Government was represented by a high-powered delegation. The PDP chieftain enjoys a cult-like following in Kogi State, particularly in his Yoruba-speaking Okun area. The Chairman of Confluence Cable Network clocked 67 years on September 1.

  • Interesting take on George Clooney’s wedding

Interesting take on George Clooney’s wedding

Social media reports on the George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin wedding has focused solely on George Clooney’s being an internationally acclaimed actor and not much was mentioned of his new wife, except for the fact that she was a beautiful lawyer. The Business woman media

Here is The Business Woman Media attempt at correcting the unbalanced media representations of the pair’s who tied the knot in Venice this weekend:

“Amal Alamuddin, a 36 year old London-based dual-qualified English barrister and New York litigation attorney who has long been a high-profile figure in international refugee and human rights law has gone against the trend for professional women in her field and married… an actor.

Amal is an educated and successful career woman we’ve long admired. The high-flying barrister has notched up many career highs, including representing the controversial WikiLeaks whistleblower Julian Assange, and also has multilingual fluency in English, French and Arabic.

Amal attended St. Hugh’s College, Oxford University, earning her BA/LLB and receiving the Exhibitioner, Shrigley Award. She also attended New York University School of Law earning her LLM and receiving the Jack J. Katz Memorial Award.

A true testament to her character is her decision to find time to serve on the expert panel of Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (formed by UK Foreign Secretary William Hague) to gather evidence of sexual crimes committed in conflict zones.

Singing her praises yet? Well you aren’t the only ones…

Julia Roberts called her “beautiful and smart”. Translation: she is beautiful and smart.

Mark Stephens, the solicitor who hired Amal to represent Assange: “She is a fabulously bright woman, she’s independent, has a Rolls-Royce mind and intersocial skills to die for.”  Translation: she is awesome.

Amal AlamuddinAmal is also a style icon for corporate women across the globe, with her easy elegance set off with her love of quirky footwear – a nice touch to her personal brand.

Now back to this marriage …

Little is known of Amal’s earlier relationships (we assume she was climbing that corporate ladder and smashing glass ceilings) but she’s tying the knot with an actor, whose name is George Clooney, we’re told.

He’s probably a nice man, but seems to be a bit clingy, as since she met him it’s hard to find a photo or footage of Amal without him hanging around in the background.

We only hope he doesn’t hold her back from conquering the world. We think this George Clooney fellow has scored big time.

He’s been quoted as saying he was ‘marrying up’… we agree”

  • Pillars of high society dazzle at Ita-Giwa’s daughter’s wedding

Pillars of high society dazzle at Ita-Giwa’s daughter’s wedding

The city of Lagos was painted in beautiful colours last Saturday over the wedding of Senator Florence Ita-Giwa’s daughter, Kokoeka, and her beau of many months, Chimaobi Obioha. The event presented an opportunity for the high society to reciprocate Mama Bakassi’s kindness and support for which she has been known for ages.

Senator Ita-Giwa is one socialite always counted on by friends for moral and financial support. Little wonder they trooped out to return Mama Bakassi’s good gesture.

The matrimonial ceremony was held at Methodist Church of the Trinity, Tinubu Square, Lagos, followed by a one-of-its-kind reception at Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos. From the nation’s corridors of power to its socio-economic milieu, men and women of clout and substance showered the couple with luxury items.

Notable names at the event included Hajia Abah Folawiyo; Oba Otudeko; Funsho Amosu; Senator Ken Nnamani; Onari Duke; Folorunsho Alakija; Aliko Dangote; Sam Iwuajoku; Andy Uba and Nike Akande, among others.
