    For Chika Mbonu, the former Managing Director of the defunct Assurance Bank, and his lovely wife, Amaka, these are indeed happy times. Recently sighted at Nnami Okonkwo’s 50th birthday party, the couple was all over each other like two young lovers who had just been struck with the cupid arrow. They were seen passing one gist after the other to each other.

    Their sight at the birthday bash definitely told a story of a resurging love affair. Without doubt, Chika and Amaka’s marriage has weathered many storms, as many will recall how the union almost reportedly hit the rocks. The world of Amaka was almost jolted by the report that Chika was done with her and was already considering a world in which the loving, dark-complexioned Amaka would not feature. It was speculated then that Chika, who had everything at his beck and call, was planning to dissolve the marriage for reasons best known to him.

    The period nearly ended their marriage, but for the timely intervention of friends of the family, who doused the tension and helped restore the marriage. All that has, however, been dumped into the dustbin of history, as the couple are now happy together.

    Although the 2015 general election is still some months away, politicians in Kwara State are already beating the war drums. The latest to throw his hat into the ring is international businessman, Alhaji Jani Ibrahim. The politician, whose name got a generous mention in the troubles that befell the now defunct Nigerian Airways, is perfecting plans to dethrone the incumbent Governor Abdulfatahi Ahmed.

    With his entry into the race, Jani has joined the list of politicians positioning themselves for the PDP’s governorship ticket ahead of the governorship election in Kwara State. The Offa-born former Managing Director of the Nigerian Airways is said to have initiated moves to reach out to all the powerful blocs in whose hands lies the power to get the ticket.

    With fat accounts and thriving investments in many sectors of the economy, including aviation, petroleum, construction and others, Jani is getting things fixed ahead of the battle for the ticket. But he will have a mountain to climb with the likes of Chief John Dara; Dele Belgore; Prof. Shuaib Oba Abdul Raheem; Senator Simeon Ajibola; Senator Gbemi Saraki and Senator Sulaim Ajadi also in the race.

    A holder of a first degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Greenwich University, England, Ajani owns Lubcon Oil, with factories in Nigeria and Ghana. It will be recalled that he was indicted by the Justice Nwazota-led Commission of Inquiry into the management of Nigerian Airways.

    Grand pageantry was recently at play when Nnamdi Okonkwo, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Fidelity Bank Plc, joined the golden club. Family and friends stood to be counted at the celebration.

    Ruby Garden, along Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos, hosted the 50th birthday of the quintessential banker. The event, anchored by Uchechi Yakub-Lawal and Comedian Akpororo, also had a brief documentary of the celebrant viewed by cheering guests who came from all walks of life to celebrate Okonkwo. The cutting of the cake was anchored by Ali Baba, while music was supplied by reggae gospel sensation, Buchi.

    The event had in attendance Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro; former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi; Ben Akabueze; Raginald Ihejiahi; Nkiru Anumudu; Kola Abiola; Alex Oti; Nicholas Okoye; Chidi Anyaegbu; Clint Obioha and many A-list celebrities.

    Nnamdi, no doubt has done well for himself. Prior to his ascendancy to the number one post at Fidelity Bank Plc, he was an executive director in charge of the South Directorate of the bank. Holder of a Bachelor of Science degree in Agric Economics from the University of Benin, and an MBA in Banking & Finance from Enugu State University, he has attended various business and management training locally and overseas, including Harvard Business School and University of Oxford, among others.

    He is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Programme of INSEAD Business School, Fontainebleau, France.

    In what has become a tradition, last Monday’s Eid el Fitr celebration once again provided Chief Rasak Akanni Okoya, the Aare of Lagos and Chairman of Eleganza Group, the opportunity to host the Muslim faithful in his palatial Oluwa Ni Sola Estate, Ajah, Lagos. After the Eid el Fitri prayers at the Oluwanisola Estate Mosq‎ue, family members, friends and Muslim faithful were hosted to a reception.

    Okoya started this philanthropic gesture decades ago and has remained committed to it ever since. And for those who might think that the gesture is a one-off event, the billionaire business magnate replicates this on a weekly basis. His estate hosts Muslim faithful every Friday after the Jumat service, where he serves free lunch.

    In a similar gesture, Lagos socialite and businessman, Sir Clement Olu Okeowo, recently held a thanksgiving service with his family and friends at the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Lagos. The high-point of the thanksgiving ceremony was his donation of a 3-manual pipe organ and choir vestments to the church. He followed it up with another round of thanksgiving at Our Saviours Anglican Church, where he also donated the same items.

    But for the death of Chief (Mrs.) Flora Olamide Harold-Sodipo, the month of July would have ended on a high note for Olori Oladunni Sijuwade, the beautiful wife of His Royal Majesty, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse 11, the Ooni of Ife. Her mother, Chief (Mrs.) Flora Olamide Harold- Sodipo, kissed the world goodbye on Thursday, July 24, in Lagos.

    Mama Harold-Sodipo (née Adefope), who bestrode Nigerian social landscape like a colossus, died at the ripe age of 92. She lived a fulfilled life, as she nurtured many souls to greatness. Olori Ladun, aged 58, the only female of three children, has been distraught since the death of her darling mother. She has been the more inconsolable in that she shared an uncommon bond with her mother, with whom she also shared a striking resemblance.

    Despite the fact that she was weak during her last days, Mama remained sharp and witty until death called. She was survived by Adedapo Harold-Sodipo; Olori Ladun Sijuwade and Adebayo Harold-Sodipo, many grandchildren and a great grandchild.
