  • Ambode set for low-key birthday celebration

Ambode set for low-key birthday celebration

It was American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who wrote that the heights reached and kept by great men were not attained by a sudden flight. While their companions slept, they were up at night, toiling. Longfellow’s assertion is a reflection of both the character and rise of Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, from relative obscurity to the leadership of the richest state in Nigeria.

Even while he worked his way up as an assistant treasurer in a local government, Ambode was tenacious and unrelenting, focusing on his goals and aspirations with supreme concentration. And the higher he rose, the more his humility and sense of responsibility.

Since he assumed the mantle of the leadership of Lagos State, Governor Ambode has set about putting smiles on the faces of residents with a string of projects that have made him the toast of Lagosians, who have been singing his praises.

The unassuming number one man in Lagos and loving husband of Bolanle Ambode turns 54 on June 14. But rather than throw a lavish birthday party, the humble governor is likely to seize the chance to once more demonstrate his love for humanity as he has been doing for the past few years. For the third year running, he plans to use his birthday to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer.

Ex-Odu’a GMD celebrates 61st birthday in style

There is no doubt that Dr Adebayo Jimoh, the immediate past Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Odu’a Investment Limited and currently the Chairman Board of Directors of Osun State-based Omoluabi Mortgage Bank Plc, is a thoroughbred technocrat. But many people do not know that the man fondly called Mr Turnaround by admirers has unbridled love for school pupils. That much he demonstrated when he celebrated his 61st birthday recently.

While most of his peers throw big parties to celebrate their birthdays, Jimoh surprised all and sundry when he went with well-wishers to Wisdom Ace International School, Ibadan, to celebrate his birthday with the pupils, who received the celebrant with joy. Before he cut the birthday cake with the pupils, Dr Jimoh advised them on the need to face their studies and to always be polite and civil in their interactions with colleagues and parents.

The founder of the school, Mr Tunde Jimoh, thanked the celebrant for deeming it fit to celebrate his birthday with the pupils of his school; a gesture he said would be indelible in the memories of the pupils and the history of the school.

    Mike Adenuga remembers mum

Memories are like an underground river that keeps flowing long after it has stopped showing on the surface. And few memories are as precious as that of a dutiful son of his deceased caring mother. That explains why every June 8, the mind of Globacom boss and one of Africa’s wealthiest men, Mike Adenuga, is occupied by fond memories of his departed mother, Madam Oyindamola Juliana Adenuga.

Although it has been 12 years since his doting mother passed on, the bond between them remains as solid as a rock. The Globacom chairman does not miss any opportunity to show the world that he still cherishes the memories of his mother.

If it is true that behind every successful man there is a woman, then Madam Juliana, a disciplinarian and apostle of hard work, proved herself the driving force that ensured Adenuga’s pride of place in the comity of the powerful and influential.

In appreciation of this, Adenuga has since set aside June 8 of every year to celebrate the memory of her mother as well as that of his father, Pa Michael Agbolade Adenuga, who passed away on June 7, 1979. This year was no exception as a prayer session was organised for the repose of their souls.

  • Hon Jibrin lies low

    Hon Jibrin lies low

Former House of Representatives Chairman of Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Abdulmimin Jibrin, has decided to lie low after his face-off with the leadership of the House who he accused of budget-padding. While the going was good, Hon. Jibrin was like a breath of fresh air in the National Assembly. Young and progressive, he was installed the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance in the 7th Assembly.

His profile rose further when he was picked to head the juicy House Committee on Appropriation in the current dispensation. But that was where the bubble burst as the representative of Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano accused the principal officers of the house of padding the budget, leading to his removal from the committee. He was also accused of diverting funds meant for projects in the south to his own state. He was eventually suspended for a year.

But the damage, though sizable, was not terminal. He recently returned from political exile and had a quiet 40th birthday celebration at his Abuja home with his wife and kids. As he gets ready to re-enter the frame, not a few observers are wondering whether the lawmaker will be able to recover lost grounds.

  • Gabriel Ogbechie’s Rainoil celebrates 20th anniversary

Gabriel Ogbechie’s Rainoil celebrates 20th anniversary

With the harsh business climate in the country indigenous businesses face an uphill task to survive. Many of them end up getting swallowed by rising costs and dwindling returns. It therefore warms the heart to hear the occasional tale of a local company standing tall and buoyant amidst the chaos. One such company is Rainoil Limited, a big player in the oil and gas sector.

This baby of Delta big boy, Gabriel Ogbechie, was founded 20 years ago and has since weathered the storms. From just N80,000 capital, it has grown to become a giant in the petroleum export and distribution. To mark 20 years of continuous growth, a lecture was organised a few weeks back with the title “The Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry: Opportunities, Challenges and Prospects of the Downstream Sector”.

A thanksgiving service was also held last Sunday at Pastor Sam Adeyemi’s Daystar Christian Centre in Lekki. It was well attended by colleagues and high society.

  • When the rich and famous gathered for Dapo Abiodun

If you want to know how big someone is, check the calibre of people who attend his or her functions. Truly powerful people are crowd-pullers with the ability to attract the high and mighty to their shindigs no matter the time or season.

That was how those who doubted the pedigree and influence of Dapo Abiodun were silenced by the turnout of eminent personalities at the Heyden Oil boss’ 57th birthday soiree. It was a summit of great men at the shindig that also doubled as the unveiling of his new private lounge, 12 Temple.

Although it was Ramadan season, it was hard to know from the quality of guests and the amount of ‘jollification’ on show at the high-powered birthday gig. Hundreds of elites ditched their meetings and prayer mats to converge on 12 Temple located in Ikoyi for a toast to the good health of the Hayden Oil business tycoon.

Prominent among the eminent dignitaries were governors Ayo Fayose and Hassan Dankwanbo; celebrities Willy and Nkiru Anumudu, Folake Coker, Sijibomi Ogundele; and chieftains Capt. Hosa Okunbo, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, Wale Tinubu, Kayode Fayemi, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, Ronke Sokefun, Bayo Abdul, Benny Obazi, Funmi Omitowoju, Nnamdi Okonkwo and Sir Olu Okeowo.

  • Senator Gbenga Ashafa celebrates wife at 60

English romantic poet, John Keats, once wrote that a thing of beauty is joy forever. Those who have been privileged to witness the evergreen romance between Senator Gbenga Ashafa and his wife, Folashade (nee Edun), will no doubt align with Keats’ position. Since their chance meeting several decades ago, the duo have played unending orchestra to enduring love.

They had sipped the goblet of companionship first as friends and then as a couple, and have remained intoxicated by it ever since. Ashafa, the senator representing Lagos East senatorial district, is a man with an enviable political track record. But all his hard work could have amounted to little or nothing without the support and patience of Folashade whose love and understanding saw him through the tough times. Little surprise then that he did not miss the opportunity to show the world how much she means to him on the occasion of her 60th birthday.

The festivities commenced with an Islamic prayer at Grandview Plaza, Magodo, attended by renowned clerics. This was followed by a Christian thanksgiving service on Lagos Island. It will interest many to know that Senator Ashafa is a Muslim, while Folashade is a Christian. The festivities concluded with the couple showing their humanitarian side by paying a visit to select charity homes.
