One city that is benefitting from the new trend is the ancient city of Ibadan which is now home to several hot spots where people can have a good time.

As Lagos, the entertainment capital of Nigeria, becomes saturated, night club owners are looking towards Ibadan as the next frontier to conquer. Time was when the city was quiet and sleepy. Now, it is one show or the other and nightclubs have moved to cash in on the phenomenon.

Along the popular MKO Abiola Way, the likes of Clique 69 and Apollo’s Lounge are offering customers the best night life experience. Elsewhere, the likes of Platinum Nite Club, Option 24/7, GQ Lounge and 411 Night Club are in a tug of war to entice customers with their attractive offerings.

  • Endless tears for Aisha Alli-Balogun

It is more than one week since budding broadcaster and presenter of popular comedy show Stand Up Nigeria, Aisha Alli-Balogun, died, but tears have not stopped flowing from family members, friends and fans who are still shocked and saddened by her sudden departure from the plane of existence.

It will be recalled that the up-and-coming showbiz personality was gunned down penultimate Friday by dare devil men of the underworld in mysterious circumstances. Her killers had tried to kidnap her, her daughter and a pregnant friend as she drove on the Majidun-Asolo stretch of the busy Ikorodu Expressway.

A popular version of the story says she struggled to save her daughter, Fareedah, from the kidnappers before she was gunned down. The criminals managed to escape with her daughter who was later released after a few days. It was not clear if ransom was paid to secure her release.

At the time of writing, the fate of the pregnant woman was unknown.

Aisha, popularly known as Thelma, was a cheerful person who was already making waves in the entertainment industry even though she was still in her 20s. She was married to Ajibola Yussuf Abiose with whom she had two kids.

  • All set in Oghara for Ibori’s return

Residents of Oghara in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State are in high spirits as they await the return of their beloved son and former Delta State governor, James Ibori. Ibori was set free on Wednesday by a court in London where he was in jail for about four years following his conviction for money laundering offences.

Major roads and street corners in the town are awash with posters welcoming the ex-governor back home. What is more, key locations in Oghara have been given a facelift while the town is beautified and cleaned up.

Unlike other politicians who ignore their ancestral communities while piling up riches in Abuja and elsewhere, Chief James Onanefe Ibori a.k.a. Odidigborigbo of Africa, did a lot for the Oghara kingdom, building a lot of infrastructure there during his tenure as Delta governor between 1999 and 2007. That is why his kinsmen are pulling all the strings to ensure he is treated to a  royal reception upon his return.

Popular spots in Oghara like the Market Roundabout, Ibori Roundabout and the entrance to Oghara, are full of congratulatory messages and posters proclaiming the people’s joy and ecstasy at his return.

  • Segun Aina bags doctoral honour

Great heights reached by noble men are not attained by a sudden flight. While their companions are asleep, they keep toiling through the night until the day breaks to see them looking down at the rest of humanity from their lofty heights.

The foregoing captures the trajectory taken by Segun Aina, the banker extraordinaire and immediate past president of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. Segun has moved through the banking industry like an unstoppable machine. From UBA and Ecobank to Fountain Trust Bank, he left nothing but glowing testimonies in his wake.

Surprisingly to many, Lawrence Segun Aina, has interests that extend far beyond the narrow province of banking. The Chairman of Multi-Trex Integrated Foods Plc currently sits atop the board of other publicly quoted and private companies in food processing, investment banking, information technology and engineering.

A humble servant of humanity, Segun Aina established the Segun Aina Foundation as far back as 1994. To say he has made an appreciable impact with his foundation would be an understatement. SAF has been providing leadership and mentoring programmes for youths, endowments in universities, educational scholarship awards to deserving brilliant but financially challenged students at senior secondary and tertiary levels and various other youth empowerment and development initiatives in the South West region.

It was thus in recognition of his unending efforts to aid the youths in attaining their dreams that the Tai Solarin College of Education in Ogun State recently conferred on him an honorary doctoral degree in Business Education.

  • Tundun Abiola regains groove

As a daughter of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, Tundun Abiola has enjoyed a fair share of the limelight before some negative events robbed her of some of her shine and forced her to lie low. But little by little, she seems to be finding her way back to the social scene.

A few years ago, the news media were awash with stories of the breakup of her marriage with Benue-born Atama Attah. The two got married with a lot of fanfare in May 2009 at the Claridges Hotel, Mayfair, London. But their union lasted only four months before it crashed under the weight of ‘irreconcilable differences’. The fine dude has since remarried, leaving Tundun to lick her wounds from heartbreak in silence.

In the aftermath of her broken marriage and perhaps in search of spiritual succour, Tundun had relinquished the religion of her family and converted to Christianity.  She also moved in with her mother, Mrs Bisi Abiola, who doubtless provided her with the comfort that only a mother can. All this seems to have made the desired impact as Tundun was recently spotted at a book launch in Lagos. Stylishly attired and effervescent, she was the cynosure of all eyes.

  • Royal honour for Shina Peller

    Royal honour for Shina Peller

Like a spacecraft on inexorable journey to the sun, Shina Peller’s star has been shining brighter and brighter on the social scene. But unlike the spacecraft in danger of being melted by the fiery rays of the sun, Shina is in no danger of being burnt by his growing fame.

From his relatively humble beginnings as the unremarkable son of a remarkable man, Shina Peller has over the years worked quietly to carve a niche for himself. He has slowly turned his Club Quilox into one of the biggest entertainment spots in the country.

It is little surprise then that the accolades have been pouring into his laps like water from a never-drying tap. The latest of such accolades is the chieftaincy title about to be conferred on him by the royal father of Igbobi-Sabe community in Yaba, Lagos. Come December 18, Oba Owolabi Adeyemi Adeshina Adeniyi, will confer on Peller the chieftaincy title of Mayegun of Igbobi-Sabe.

Not one to miss out when one of their own is being honoured, celebrities are beside themselves with excitement over the development. Led by Otunba Lekan Osifeso, Chairman Lekai Construction Company, they are planning to storm Oba Adeniyi’s palace in droves for the event.

  • Remi Ajidahun returns with a bang

Once popular socialite, Remi Ajidahun, has resurfaced on the social scene. Before his disappearance, he was one of the happening dudes who painted the town red with their flamboyant lifestyles. Known for his extravagance and show-off, Remi chased enjoyment like a lusty lover pursues a damsel.

In his heyday as the senior special assistant to then Aviation Minister Femi Fani Kayode, Ajidahun strutted his stuff like a stylish model on the fashion runway. He had always been a man with ambition, and his appointment as Fani Kayode’s SSA gave him the wings to fly higher. With it, he was able to walk confidently into hallowed places of power, opening doors and closing them to whoever he chose to.

The Executive Vice Chairman of Hole 19, a popular and exquisite fun spot on Victoria Island, however lay low with the falling fortunes of his former boss only to now rebound in a big way.

He recently announced his re-entrance into the big boys club with the opening of the Tag Heuer Franchise store in Abuja.

Tag Heuer is a Swiss luxury watch designer and one of the household names in the world patronised by global icons and celebrities. The opening of the shop at the popular Lake Mall in Abuja is sure to fetch Ajidahun a lot of publicity in the days ahead.

  • Tina Ogundoyin in new life

One-time queen of the Ibadan social scene, Tina Ogundoyin, is a living proof of the instability of good fortune. The woman once reputed as the quintessential celebrity has packed her bags and withdrawn to the background of the social scene.

The Queen of Sheba, as Tina is fondly called by peers and admirers, has had some emotional setbacks which have no doubt contributed to her semi-retirement from the celebrity scene. Since her relationship with Yoruba big boy Sogo Agboola crashed, she has lost some of the sparkling lustre that dazzled everyone in her heyday.

Now older, wiser and free from the pangs of heartbreak, Tina amuses herself by spending time with faithful friends and confidants, limiting her public appearance to a few events here and there.

  • Lekan Osifeso, the new kid on the block

These are happy times for children of the rich who are establishing footholds in the entertainment industry, sometimes to the consternation of their wealthy parents, and at other times to the bewilderment of the general public who often wonder what the apparently spoilt kids are doing in a sector dominated by people with grass-to-grace stories.

Little wonder that a lot of skepticism greeted the likes of Davido when they joined the music industry. But the man has since become a huge success, paving the way for the likes of Abimbola Dehinde Fernandez, Ife Otedola a.k.a. DJ Cuppy and other heirs of the elites to also crack the musical circle.

One more silver-spoon kid has now joined the ever-increasing ranks. He is none other than Olalekan Osifeso Jnr a.k.a. Lojay. The dude is the son of A-list celebrity and head honcho of Lekai Group of Companies, Otunba Lekan Osifeso. The new kid on the block is set to take the Nigerian entertainment scene by storm, beginning from next year.

The 20-year old Lojay, based in the UK where he studied, has already released two singles. The first, a fun, danceable number, is titled Solo Matter, while his sophomore effort is called Kulikuli. Both have been enjoying plenty of airtime in the UK and receiving rave reviews from music lovers.
