    Toyin Subair bounces back

Toyin Subair, Lagos socialite and owner of defunct HiTV was sighted in London recently at a photography exhibition in celebration of Nigeria’s centenary. The event, which was sponsored by the Kola Aluko Foundation, paraded prominent Nigerians and friends of Nigeria based in the UK.

Although Subair strolled into the venue without an air of the flamboyance for which he was known in the past, he still was able to command the attention of many at the occasion.

In recent years, Toyin has been lying low in social affairs. He is hardly seen in public, contrary to his former ubiquitous self in the days of yore when he had the world as his oyster. He was not only a darling of political bigwigs, his signature was also highly sought after by top guns in the corporate world. His car park paraded top of the range SUVs.

Toyin lived life to the fullest until his pay television broadcast business hit the rocks less than five years after it started. He currently lives in London where his closeness to billionaire businessman, Kola Aluko, appears to have given him a new lease of life.

It is said that in London social circle, no A-list event is complete without his presence, and he mostly attends events in Kola Aluko’s company.

  • Francis Ogboro goes low profile

    Francis Ogboro goes low profile

How funny life can be. Close observers may have noticed that one of the grand patrons of high society and former Lagos Polo Captain, Francis Ogboro, has been missing from social functions in recent times. The wider the Celeb Watch has cast its searchlight for a glimpse of this once effervescent personality, the more elusive he seems to get.

The Ogarra, Edo State born fun loving socialite is no longer visible on the social radar. While no concrete reason is yet to be averred for his near zero social activity in recent times, it is said in some quarters that the multi-millionaire and former close ally of ex-head of state, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, has been extremely busy trying to fix a K-leg developed by his business sometime last year.

Chief Ogboro had not been sighted at octane events, which used to be his pastime in years past. His most recent high profile appearance was made in March during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Yenagoa Polo Club, in the oil rich state of Bayelsa, where he exchanged souvenirs with the state governor, Seriake Dickson.

He has since recoiled into his shell.

    Happy times for Ibidun Ighodalo

While she has kept the details about the launch of her new event centre, The Dorchester by Elizabeth R, to her chest, information scooped by Celebrity Watch showed that glowing beauty, Ibidun Ighodalo’s plan to launch the facility sited on Water Corporation Drive, Off Ligali Ayorinde Road, Victoria Island, Lagos, has reached fever pitch. The magnificent edifice, which now is only undergoing final touches, boasts 4,000 theatre-style seats, 1,500 banquet-seat hall and an ample parking space.

While no figure had been put on the edifice, it is speculated that the cost of the Dorchester can only be estimated in billions. Ibidun, the wife of the Senior Pastor of Trinity House, Ituah Ighodalo, celebrated the fourth anniversary of the church a few weeks ago.

Trinity House was founded after a misunderstanding that ensued in the pastorate of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). Things fell apart between the former pastor of Christ Church, Gbagada and the authorities of RCCG due to the complex nature of the crash of his first marriage. Ighodalo later remarried the then Ibidun Ajayi, Nigeria’s first Face of Lux and MD/CEO of Elizabeth R.

  • Qdot: I don’t fancy rapping anymore

Qdot: I don’t fancy rapping anymore

Fakoya Qudus Oluwadamilare, popularly known as Qdot, is a graduate of Arts from the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos. In this interview with ADEWOYIN ADENIYI, he talks about his journey in the music industry and why he broke up with his former record label, among other reasons.

HOW did music start for you? Well, I have been in the music game since I was in secondary school. But I was doing rap at that time before I switched to commercial music, just to do something creative.

Did you switch to commercial music because rap wasn’t paying you?

Rap is not my way, so I had to find another way, which is commercial music; it is the main thing in Nigeria now.

You did a song sometime ago with Seriki and now with Olamide…

(Cuts in)Due to my kind of music, I have to feature people who do something similar. They do Afro-music too. Seriki has been my friend right from time and Olamide too is like a brother to me; so, they are ready to work with me anytime I call on them for music collaboration.

How was your growing up like?

Me nah ghetto boy oh right from time. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon. I am the first-born of my dad and the second born of my mum. I went to the United Senior High School and later Yaba College of Technology, where I studied General Arts. Though I wanted to study music, I didn’t know music wasn’t under the course. So, here I am doing music full-time.

How did you come about your previous hit, Alomo Meta?

I have always wanted to sound different because there are lots of party songs out there and there was no money to promote the song myself; so, I had to do something different and unique. So, I decided to take it to the church and called my producer, Antrass, to cook up the beat; and then, we worked together to make up the hit.

So, you are not a Celestial Church member?

No, I no dey go church oh; I no dey go mosque.

Your latest single, Ibadan, is currently receiving massive airplay. Are you from Ibadan?

Yeah, I am half-Ibadan, half-Lagos. So, if you want to pay me in Lagos, it is okay by me and if you want to pay me from Ibadan, it’s alright. So, I am everywhere like MTN.

    What brought about the song?

As I said, I love doing Afro-centric music and African songs. So, Ibadan was just a freestyle song and I didn’t want to promote it. But we decided to work on it and see how much we could push the song. Fortunately, Olamide (Badoo) liked the song, so he jumped on the song and here we are doing fine.

With the high rate of competition in the industry now, how do you intend to break into the industry?

We are coming with a caterpillar oh (laughs). We are coming with full force. This is because the Lima gang is doing well now and we are focusing on Qdot. My producer and the rest of the gang are coming out to promote ourselves because there is no one to promote us. We are just fighting for ourselves. You know, it is not easy to shoot a video and promote yourself, but God go help us.

Are you still signed under Omo Ita Entertainment?

No, I was with them for a year. Actually, I signed a year deal, so I left when my contract expired.

Why did you leave the record label?

Omo Ita Entertainment didn’t want me to do my kind of music. But I have to focus on myself and my style, so I walked away when my contract expired.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

Right now, I am not signed to any record label, but I am under the Lima Gang management. So, if any record label wants to sign me, they will have to see the management.

Who are your role models in the music industry?

I only look up to God because me sef as I dey, I dey vex gan. I am dropping a new song very soon titled Yorubad Boy produced by Antrass. That is where I am pouring out my mind. Though there are lots of songs, we have to take a step at a time. I believe in myself and my team also. It’s a team work now and we don’t have beef for anybody.

Do you have any plans to do collaborations with anybody?

Right now, I have a song with Patoranking and I am planning to do a song with Black Magic. I have a song featuring my own people.

How do you cope with your female fans?

I love them; we dey together and even when I am with my girlfriend, I still show them much love.

    And she doesn’t get jealous?

    No, she understands.

    What about the male fans?

Well, I treat them well. At times, I show love by giving out a little from my pocket. And if I don’t have money on me, I just scope them- we call that street orientation.

Who is your female crush in the industry?

(Laughs) Nobody; I don’t have any. I am from the streets; so, I don’t have time for that.

Organisers plan big for Queen Nigeria

THE Nigerian pageants industry is set to receive a major boost with the return of the Queen Nigeria beauty pageant, six years after it made its debut.

With the theme: “Beyond Nigeria”, this year’s edition is scheduled to hold on Saturday, December 6, at Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos.

According to Olusegun Famodimu, CEO of Famford, the sponsor of the pageant,  the re-launch of Queen Nigeria is most auspicious, particularly now that the nation’s unity is under some threats.

“The re-launch of Queen Nigeria could not have come at a better time when our national unity is threatened. It is important that the entertainment industry takes the lead with innovative ideas on how to foster unity. We hope to raise the standard on the definition of the Nigerian beauty queen. We also want to celebrate the rich fundamental cultural and moral values that typify the true essence of the contemporary Nigerian woman,” he said.

According to the organisers, the week-long programme will showcase the nation’s historical and cultural heritage. To ensure that it is truly Nigerian, participants are expected to showcase their talents in the various areas of human endeavours like cooking, dancing and singing, among others.

“The Queen Nigeria beauty pageant will not involve the bikini. We want to make it a truly Nigerian experience. Therefore, the contestants will participate in cooking, dancing and singing,” he said.

Among other qualities the organisers are looking out for in the queen are: physical beauty; intellectual and charismatic abilities; poise and style; confidence; self-respect and passion for the society.

Popular dance instructor, Muyiwa Osinaike of the Maltina Dancehall fame, who is the Head of Production for the pageant, said the search for a Queen Nigeria would be taken to all the nooks and crannies of the country.

To give the pageant a worldwide coverage, the organisers are partnering the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) to broadcast the pageant.

It’s baby girl for Caroline Danjuma

Looking forward to a new baby is seen by many as one of the most ecstatic feelings on earth. Caroline Danjuma lent credence to this assertion weeks ago when she organised a lavish baby shower which featured the finest of decors, foods, drinks as well as her old friends from her days in modelling and entertainment.

Reports say that both mother and baby are fine while the husband is full of joy for the new addition. • Jide Omokore up and running

    Jide Omokore up and running

If you have seen Jide Omokore lately, chances are that you would notice a refreshed figure. The influential businessman and Chairman of Spog Oil and Gas seems to be enjoying the kind of peace that surpasses human understanding. His new posture puts a lie to the story that he has been under the weather for some time. He is every bit his old lively self.

The top player in the oil and gas sector came under spotlight some weeks back as having fallen out of favour with his backers in the corridors of power. He was rumoured to have been reprimanded for some business deals he handled badly. The development reportedly took a toll on his health and he had to travel abroad for medical attention.

The one time close associate of the Minister of Petroleum Resources appears to have opened a new chapter as he now concentrates on salvaging his business from ruins. Although he has not been as visible at social events like he used to be, he is gradually warming himself back to reckoning.

  • Multichoice battles pirates

    Multichoice battles pirates

AS part of efforts to curb the rising level of commercial piracy in the country, MultiChoice Nigeria has urged individuals or entities that use DStv services for public use, without a commercial license, to obtain it so as to enable them broadcast DStv contents without litigation.

Caroline Oghuma, PR Manager, DStv, MultiChoice, said: “We want these subscribers to stay on the right side of the law. Those who are yet to convert are infringing on the copy right laws of Nigeria and will face appropriate penalties.”

Oghuma explained that MultiChoice is working in association with the Nigerian Copyrights Commission (NCC) to stem the rising trend of commercial piracy. According to her, early this year, officials of the NCC, Lagos Zonal Office, issued a 14- day deadline for hotels to obtain the appropriate commercial licenses for the broadcast of DStv channels.

“We are happy that some hotel owners have complied by legalising their subscriptions. However, we urge those who have not complied to do so,” she said.

Last year, the Commission launched an amnesty campaign to create awareness on broadcast piracy.

Oghuma added that the campaign would move to the second phase, which would involve the copyright audit of outlets using DStv in public and sanctioning of infringing users.

“MultiChoice Nigeria, in conjunction with the NCC, is currently battling four types of piracy: cable piracy, re-broadcasting piracy, commercial piracy and circumvention piracy. Commercial users that wish to obtain a commercial license in order to avoid sanctions are advised to visit the nearest DStv office or DStv agent’s outlet,” Oghuma added.
