    Nigerian culture irreplicable – Simi

Afrobeats singer Simisola Kosoko popularly known as Simi has declared profound pride in being Nigerian, stating how it is impossible for non-Nigerians to replicate the culture.

In a recent appearance on the ‘90s Baby Show’, the “Joromi” hitmaker stated: “My favourite thing about Nigeria is just the spirit of Nigerians. You can’t replicate it. Nobody else can be a Nigerian other than a Nigerian.”

She observed that Hollywood’s portrayals of African accents typically imitate East or South African dialects, rarely attempting a Nigerian one.

“Even when they are faking African accents in Hollywood movies, they never actually fake a Nigerian accent.

“They always fake East Africa and South African accents. Being a Nigerian doesn’t just come as naturally, it just feels like home.

“That is why I wish the country was better. Because I feel like no one would want to leave,” she added.

Why I quit smoking – Yemi Alade

Afropop star Yemi Alade has revealed how she developed a short-term cigarette addiction while in university but quit after it began harming her voice and required her to hide the habit in public.

During an interview with Chude Jideonwo, the Johnny singer explained that her experimentation with smoking as a teenager quickly escalated into a nightly routine before bed.

She said the need to conceal cigarettes when out in public created discomfort that ultimately led her to stop.

Alade also noted the negative impact on her vocal health, a critical concern for her career.

“Some people say I don’t smoke, I don’t this, I don’t that. When I was in the university I tried smoking. I did not work out. But before it did not work out, it worked out a bit too much. I started needing to smoke before I go to bed. I was getting addicted to that lifestyle. But also, in public, I would hide the cigarette.

“So, I was like, ‘What’s this life; the discomfort that I can’t go to bed without smoking and then when I go out, I am going to hide the cigarette? As a teenager in the university trying to figure out life, I also made certain decisions for myself that if I’m going to hide to do something, I will not do it. Because I like to be aware of my environment and my decisions. And I just said I don’t think cigarettes are for me.

“They are not for me. And they harmed me, they affected my voice anyways. So I stopped. Smoking for me did not last up to a year,” she stated.

Femi Kuti reveals secret of longevity in music industry

Veteran Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has attributed his enduring success in the industry to creating meaningful and impactful music.

In a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, the singer-songwriter advised young artists to focus on producing quality music rather than rushing to create hit songs.

He said: “When the head is not correct, nothing can be correct. I like what young artists are doing, but what would they do when they are 50?”

According to Kuti, his commitment to crafting purposeful music has enabled him to maintain relevance for over four decades.

“I can proudly tell you I’m still touring. It’s because my fans will still introduce me to their children and their children’s children. So you will see very old and children at my concerts. There are people that have followed me for 15, 20 years and still bringing my albums to sign.

“But why? Consistency. And I have something to offer. If you are not writing your music and you are buying, and you are jumping, would you still be doing that at 40?”

Kuti emphasised the importance of dedication to one’s craft, citing legendary musicians like Miles Davies and Stevie Wonder as examples of artists who have honed their skills through consistent practice.

He added: “The reason, probably, I’m respected is, I will still show dexterity, energy. I’m committed. If I pick up my sax, you will know that this guy is working. I composed everything. You (young artists) buy your songs, and you don’t want to learn. Music is like medicine. The likes of Miles Davies, Stevie Wonder and a few others are renowned because they are working. They are practicing”.

He warned young artists against prioritising fame over artistry, cautioning that neglecting to develop their skills would lead to dwindling fame and fortune in the long run.

According to him: “But young artists just rush into making music to get hit songs. You might make two or three. You are young so you are not seeing the danger -the next generation will have their star and then you will fade away.”

  • Prosperity, poverty gospels misrepresent true faith – Banky W

Prosperity, poverty gospels misrepresent true faith – Banky W

Singer, actor, and politician Olubankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has urged restraint in criticising the church, arguing that condemning the entire institution over the actions of a few is unfair and oversimplifies complex realities.

Appearing on the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu in an episode released on YouTube, the music executive and pastor acknowledged valid concerns about corruption and misconduct in some religious settings but cautioned against broad generalisations.

He said: “I think that there are fair allegations in certain regards. I have a problem when we make generalistic statements. And that I think is… We’re speaking generally, which is wrong, but I get you.”

He compared the church to other sectors like education and healthcare, where both exemplary and harmful individuals coexist, noting that people do not reject all doctors because of a few bad ones, nor dismiss all teachers due to isolated abuse.

He stated: “But I think that therein lies the problem, because you don’t say, because there were doctors who were bad or guilty of abuse, then I’m never going to go to a doctor or hospitals are evil or whatever the case may be, right? You have bad teachers and good teachers.

“In the same secondary school, I have teachers that I loved who were instrumental in making me the person I became. I had teachers who were abusive.

“Everybody has that story. In the same families, there’s always, you know, one or two people that have great touch. So I don’t think that it’s fair when we make generalistic statements and say, because I’ve seen evidence of this here, then everybody is guilty of this thing”.

On the contentious issue of prosperity preaching, Banky W rejected both the prosperity gospel and the poverty gospel as distortions of biblical truth.

“The prosperity gospel is false, is corrupted. The poverty gospel is also false and corrupted. That the idea that, oh, you are just meant to be poor, wait until you die and just submit to everything and just wait.
Yes, that’s also false. What the gospel really says is that God will provide all of your needs. God will bless you enough for you to be a blessing,” he added.

He described the true Christian message as one of divine provision, God meeting needs so believers can bless others not a promise of extreme wealth or mandated suffering.

He said: “That’s the promise. The promise is not we’re all meant to be Dangote and Otedola. And it’s also not that we’re all supposed to sleep under the bridge. It’s a gospel of provision, not prosperity and not poverty”.

While admitting that certain church segments have exploited faith for gain, he stressed that these failures should not erase the positive impact of authentic ministries serving communities quietly and effectively.

He concluded: “Now, there is a segment of the church that has taken that and abused it. And I know, and those allegations are true.
And I don’t like them either. But I also don’t like when we take that, those evidence, the evidence that we do have of corruption and allegation.Just like what you said about the music business.

“Oh, you and your people, all of you are, it’s an unfair statement. And I think that as intellectual, intelligent, eloquent people, we have to be reasonable enough to say that within this field, there are some really good things and there are some bad things, regardless of your belief system. I think that’s only fair. And that’s my pushback.”

Rapper Odumodublvck has revoked respect for hip-hop veteran M.I Abaga, branding the iconic emcee a “fence-sitter,” in a series of explosive posts on X.

The artist born Tochukwu Ojogwu declared he had lost all respect for M.I, labeling him a short man devil and a rat.

He claimed M.I knowingly stood by while a blatant lie was directed at him, choosing neutrality to protect a polished public image.

Odumodublvck emphasised that unlike M.I, he remains indifferent to public opinion.

On his X handle, he wrote: “MI_Abaga as for you. The whole world are going to be shocked that I am talking to you like this and I know they will come for me because you are very good at portraying the ‘good’ guy.

“One thing they did not tell you is that I don’t care about public opinion unlike you.

“You stood in front of a blatant lie and decided to sit on the fence like Abuchi. I have lost every iota of respect for you. I am coming out to the world. Short man devil, you no be my OG. You are nothing but a rat. I bet you won’t reply because I am saying the truth.”

The posts triggered immediate backlash with many users criticising Odumodublvck for disrespecting a foundational figure in Nigerian rap.

Critics pointed to his earlier advocacy for honoring elders as evidence of inconsistency.

A smaller group defended the outburst as a necessary challenge to authority, arguing that accountability should outweigh seniority.

M.I Abaga, co-founder of Chocolate City and a two-time BET Award nominee, has not responded to the backlash.

His most recent remarks on younger artists came in July 2025, when he stated he felt no intimidation from the new generation and urged them to match his output in the studio.

He previously acknowledged Odumodublvck’s rising influence with public praise.

EFCC probes allegations of N10 million extortion from rapper Oladips

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating allegations by rapper Oladips that its operatives extorted N10 million from him during his detention in November 2024.

Oladips claimed that despite spending five days in custody, no incriminating evidence was found on him, but he was still forced to pay N10 million before his release.

The rapper shared his harrowing experience on a podcast, describing the detention conditions as deplorable and stating that he was packed with others like sardines and given poor-quality food.

Responding, EFCC summoned the officers involved and relieving them of their operational duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

The commission emphasised its commitment to integrity and vowed to take necessary action against any staff found culpable.

It said: “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, views with great seriousness the allegation of extortion made against some of its operatives by a Nigerian rapper, Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji (a.k.a Oladips).

“The hip-hop artist gravely alleged that operatives of the Commission extorted a sum of N10,000,000( Ten Million Naira) from him before securing his release when he was arrested alongside other suspected internet fraudsters.

“The Commission wishes to state unreservedly that the grim picture painted by the artist does not reflect the true picture of the EFCC. We have seen his claims and have commenced investigations on them accordingly. Officers in the Team that handled his case have been summoned to the Corporate Headquarters of the Commission and have also been relieved of their operational duties pending the conclusion of investigation of the matter.

“The Commission is serious about its value of integrity and will take necessary action against any staff found to be culpable. It is also needful to state that if the allegation is found to be false and raised to malign the Commission or tarnish its image, appropriate sanctions will also be imposed.

“The Commission enjoins the public to await the result of its investigations and continue to keep faith with it in its conscientious task of tackling economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption”.
