Daniel Etim-Effiong: Why kissing scenes common in Nollywood

Actor and Director Daniel Etim-Effiong has shed light on why kissing scenes are prevalent in Nigerian movies.

In a recent interview on Rubbin’ Minds, he attributed their inclusion to audience demand and market trends, stating that producers use them because they sell.

Etim-Effiong suggested that a more creative approach would be to explore alternative ways of expressing intimacy and affection on screen.

“The average Nollywood script says, ‘kiss passionately’ or ‘hug,’ and they (producers) do it on purpose because that’s what they’re selling, especially on certain platforms. That’s what the audience wants, it’s demand and supply.

“But I think a braver way is to explore other forms of intimacy and create new ways to express affection,” he said.

The actor has faced controversy over his romantic roles, particularly after a passionate kissing scene with co-star Bolaji Ogunmola in a Summer Rain film promotion.

“The fact that I play a lot of romantic roles in the industry today means that I get to have kissing scenes sometimes. People feel it’s become one too many, but the question should go to the producers. Why are they expressing affection and intimacy only a certain way?

“There are several other ways you can show affection. There are downsides to everything, but when you’re a focused person, you don’t let naysayers get to you. You just focus on your business and do what you have to do,” he said.

His wife, Toyosi Etim-Effiong, expressed support for his work, saying she’s unbothered by his on-screen roles.

Etim-Effiong emphasised the importance of staying focused on his purpose as an actor and not letting criticism deter him.

He also shared that his faith guides his career choices and that he prays before taking on roles that involve kissing scenes, stating that acting is a form of worship and a way to tell inspiring stories.

“I get all my inspiration from God. I go on my knees and pray before I go to set and kiss.

“My family is my garden, then my work. It becomes a purpose to me, and that’s why I had the courage to quit engineering, a well-paying job, to go into storytelling. It felt like a calling. I have no problem acting and telling stories that inspire people; it’s a form of worship,” the actor added.

Why I initially regretted relocating to America – Teju Babyface

Comedian and TV host Teju Babyface, has opened up about his experience relocating to the United States, revealing that he once regretted moving there.

In a recent video shared on YouTube, the comedian said many people suffer from the “grass is greener” syndrome and the belief that life is better elsewhere until they face the realities of that new environment.

“The issue with life is that we almost suffer from ‘the grass is greener on the other side syndrome’ you understand that, you’ve heard about it before. When were standing in one place, in one position in life and we’re looking at another position at another place from where we’re standing, from our advantage point, that other place looks very green, very rosy, very appealing and we want to be there. The problem is that we don’t see the challenges of that side from where we are standing.”

Teju explained that his move to America came with unexpected struggles, particularly after the outbreak of COVID-19 shortly after his relocation.

“When we were leaving Nigeria, I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that it was the necessary next step in my career evolution – for us as a family, as a unit. But when we got here and the challenges started, especially when you consider that COVID-19 started a few months after we arrived, I was convinced I had made the biggest mistake of my life.

“America has its own unique challenges that you will go through – tough challenges. Then when you add COVID on top of that, ah! For about three years, I was convinced that I had made the biggest mistake of my life. That I had shot myself in the foot.”

He added that the experience made him understand a popular lyric by King Sunny Ade for the first time, showing how deeply the period affected him.

“I had a phrase for it. I was convinced that I had taken a ruinous risk. The kind of risk that leads to ruin. Because I was completely lost and had no idea where my life was going. For the first time, I could understand what King Sunny Ade meant when he sang. I never understood what he meant in that song, and I’d been singing that song all of my life. But for the first time, I understood his sentiment,” he stated.
