Undeterred, D’banj, Burna Boy get crazy on stage again

Not minding fans’ recent criticism of his act in far away Zimbabwe, Dapo Oyebanjo aka D’banj, ended the year with his showmanship appeal, thrilling the crowd to near bare-body show at the Lagos Countdown show, last Tuesday.

His Nigerian fans appear to understand his style, and the ladies all went for him.

The Kokomaster, has he is fondly called, had represented West Africa in Zimbabwe where he was the main attraction, and when it was his turn to perform, he exploded onto the stage amid pomp and zest but soon fizzled out and slumped into near- pornography with some fans.

But the Lagos experience was different. It goes to show that it is not only the ladies turning up the heat during concerts, we see the guys also like to switch the game up a bit.

Perhaps D’banj’s act was a boost to what Burna Boy craves most. He took off his shirt to measure up with the Kokomaster. Incidentally, both singers had a collabo earlier, on a hit song, Won Da Mo.

Only recently, concerns were raised by fans over Burna Boy’s performance during Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s memorial concert. The artiste had performed near-naked, showing up in white briefs while mimicking the late Afrobeat precursor. His show gave rise to murmur among the crowd.

One of the critics of Burna Boy’s stunt was Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, who said on his BlackBerry Messanger that his father was not properly depicted by the act.

  • A mother’s search pays off

A mother’s dream to get a wife for her son has been fulfilled, with the union of Olaide, daughter of elder statesman Chief Deji Fasuan, and an army officer, Lt Adegbenga Oluwaseyi Adesina, in Afao-Ekiti, Ekiti State, last Saturday. SULEIMAN SALAWUDEEN reports

They met in an unusual way. A few years ago, Olaide Busola, daughter of an elder statesman, Chief Deji Fasuan, boarded the same bus with Mrs Juliet Mojoyin Adesina, who is today her mother-in-law, from Lagos to Abeokuta in Ogun State. Before departing, they exchanged contacts.

Unknown to Olaide, the elderly woman had taken an interest in her. The woman wanted Olaide as her daughter-in-law and today she has succeeded in her plan.

For her, the wedding between Olaide and her son, Lt Adegbenga Oluwaseyi Adesina, at the St. David’s Anglican Church in Afao-Ekiti, Ekiti State, last weekend, was a dream come true.

Amid songs by the choir, the couple arrived in the church about 10am, arms locked and in measured steps. They were followed by their parents, family members and friends.

Adesina was in the ceremonial dress of the Nigerian Army; Olaide donned a white silk gown, which flowed behind her.

The town stood still for the wedding. Residents, who could not attend the church service or the reception, stood in front of their houses to behold posh cars and gorgeously dressed guests streaming by.

The sitting arrangement in the church reflected the couple’s closeness to those in attendance: their parents sat in the middle bench on the front row; other dignitaries sat at the back row. A specially made settee was placed after the last benches in the front for Ekiti State Governor Dr Kayode Fayemi.

Itinerant drummers made brisk business, singing people’s praises and doing stunts with the drums. Commercial photographers took shots of dignitaries and displayed their works for sale at the reception.

In his sermon, Ven Ariyo Agbaje urged the couple to be ready to make sacrifices, saying: “The husband has to offer sacrifices to his wife while the wife equally would have to reciprocate the gesture.”

He said the couple should follow the teachings of the Bible, adding: “Those who refuse to follow Christ are gnashing their teeth today.”

“In this 21st century, the hand phone has been doing wonders in peoples’ lives. The wife should beware of those who would be telling your husband a different story while he is right there beside you and the husband should equally beware.

“Genuinely submit to your husband. See him as the head of your household. The practical way of being a good Christian is to be a successful husband and the other way round. You are a true Christian when your marriage has been successful.

“Your temperament will always be tested by your wife. Don’t be temperamental. Always be in control of your temper and emotions. So many things will put your temper to test. Don’t lose your temper,” Ven Agbaje said.

The couple then signed the dotted lines, with their parents. A thanksgiving followed, with the couple holding two large bowls to collect donations.

Before leaving, Governor Fayemi noted the role of the bride’s father, Chief Fasuan, in the creation of Ekiti State.

Fayemi, who said he was qualified to advise the couple having been married for 25 years, enjoined them to sustain the bond of conjugal unity by remaining true and sincere to their marital vows. He added: “You both have a connection with God”.

Just before guests moved to Omolayo Civic Centre for the reception, former presidential candidate Chief Olu Falae advised the couple to refrain from comparing their marriage with others.

“This is a dangerous attitude which has ruined many families,” he said.

The bride’s mother, Mrs Modupe Fasuan, thanked God for what He has done for her daughter.

“I have never experienced any problem with my daughter. Ever since she came into the world, it has been one success story or the other. My daughter has never given me cause for worries. I wish her a very successful marriage,” she said.

The groom’s mother, Mrs Adesina, urged the couple to trust each other, saying: “The secret of a lasting and peaceful marriage is mutual trust. If a marriage will collapse, it will start by mistrust and suspicion.”

At the reception, the chairman, Dr Kunle Olajide, urged the couple not to discard the counsels given them by the cleric and other guests.

On the dance floor; the couple was joined by family members and friends, who sprayed them with mint fresh naira notes.

The reception was jampacked. No fewer than 2,000 guests jostled for 800 seats, but the intervention of Dr Olajide brought the situation under control.

Among dignitaries at the ceremony were former Governor of the old Ondo State Chief Bamidele Olumilua; Senator Clement Awoyelu; former Minister of Education Prof. Tunde Adeniran; Chief Bisi Egbeyemi; Chief Ojo Falegan; father of former Ekiti State Deputy Governor Chief Segun Famuagun; Chief Seinde Arogbofa; Chief Dayo Okondo; Mr Sunday Arogbofa; Chief Bosun Osaloni; Hon Duyile Korede and Prof. Tunde Akilaya.

The monarchs were led by the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe, the Alara of Aramoko, Oba Olu Adeyemi, the Alaaye of Efon Kingdom, Oba Emmanuel Aladejare and the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, Oba Ademola Ajakaye.

  • Anxiety over N3b film intervention fund

Anxiety over N3b film intervention fund

THE N3 billion Film Intervention Fund (FIF) in the Nigerian film industry, otherwise called Nollywood, by President Goodluck Jonathan to support the industry is causing ripples among applicants.

Called Project ACT-Nollywood, the fund is a grant from the Federal Government

Although the Federal Ministry of Finance announced that 40 people had benefited from the Capacity Training Fund (CTF), category , the details of the recipients are still not clear.

Paul Nwabuikwu, special adviser to the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, told The Nation that “the number is increasing as the process goes on; so, it’s best to wait until the process is completed. It is then we can publish the complete list.”

But while the Capacity Training Fund category may have been largely applied for by younger artistes, select crew of production companies and members of professional guilds and associations are jostling for the Film Production Fund (FPF), which is perceived to be more competitive.

FPF is a N700-million instrument of the Project ACT-Nollywood initiative, which promises N10million grant each to eligible production companies and independent producers for the making of commercially viable films.

When asked if he would avail himself of the opportunity, young filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, whose next project is in post-production stage, said he didn’t know his fate yet, though he had applied.

Afolayan, whose ‘movie-in-the works’, October 1, just won the International Movie Trailer’s Festival’s (IMTF) award in the Best Fiction Trailer category, hit location with less than 50 per cent of the $2 million- budget movie. It is obvious the filmmaker would need all the money he can garner for the completion of the film.

Nwabuikwu noted that “the funds are used to subsidise pre-production, production or post-production costs of films.”

Award-winning director of photography (DOP) Yinka Edward applied for the grant to foot his fee at the London Film School, but was refused on the grounds that the fund is not for academic purposes.

Other practitioners who may not also qualify to access the fund include Mrs. Amaka Igwe, her husband, Charles Igwe, Francis Duru and Mr. Segun Oyekunle, managing director of the Abuja Film Village, who are members of  the committee with the responsibility of apportioning the money to beneficiaries.

The objective of Project ACT-Nollywood is to encourage the sustained growth of Nigeria’s movie industry so that it realises its full potential as a significant creator of employment and considerable contributor to national GDP by addressing some of the challenges facing the industry.

Residents hail Lagos State music festival

The Lagos Countdown fanfare has been lauded by picnickers, who thronged the Eko Atlantic venue, as a thoughtful initiative by Lagos State government for residents to relax after the usual hustle bustle.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the artistes, who performed at the show, gave good account of themselves, thrilling fun seekers, as the event ticked to the new year.

As youths, men, women, children and families trooped to the Lagos Bar Beach to enjoy themselves, a company Director, Mr. Sam Effiong, said the event was a good one as the state was able to mobilise people to relax.

He said “you can see that I came out with my family to have fun and start a New Year on a good note.

“We need more of this everywhere in the country, not only in Lagos so that people can have fun.”

A student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Mr. Deji Adekoya, said “it is really thrilling to see this kind of thing happening in Lagos.

“We are coming up to the world standards and we have good musicians now and good songs, what else can we ask for but to thank Governor Raji Fashola.”

The security measure at the Countdown was impressive. The traffic police ensured smooth flow of movement.

  • CALFEST: 2face, Davido, Iyanya others excite

CALFEST: 2face, Davido, Iyanya others excite

One would have thought that following the boisterous carnival activities of last Friday, the tempo of fanfare would subside.

But Calabar, the ancient city of Cross River State, rose again, with renewed vigour, featuring top Nigerian artistes in a post- Calabar carnival concert.

2face Idibia, Iyanya, Davido and Sound Sultan were an irresistible lineup for revelers, who thronged the main bowl of the U.J Esuene Stadium on Saturday night.

Tagged “Calabar Rocks”, the 16,000 capacity stadium, at 8.00p.m., was literally bursting at the seams, as hordes of spectators got thrilled by the best of Nigeria’s musical gladiators.

After what seemed like an endless wait by the music buffs, whose appetite had been whet by local acts, the crowd suddenly went haywire with the appearance of Sound. The act stood the most unwilling from their seat.

If anyone thought the crowd was jaded by fatigue of the previous day jamz and the gyration on display on this sweaty Saturday night by the old, the young men and women offered no such hint.

Nato C dished out some of his rap tunes much to the excitement of the music throngs who wound and wriggled while the act did his thing.

The stadium erupted in ecstasy when the ‘Skelewu’ and ‘Omo Baba Lowo’ crooner, Davido, mounted the stage and got the crowd crooning and yelling along to his rave tunes. It was a moment they sure would live to remember in a long while to come.

In what could be regarded as home-coming, it was the turn of Iyanya who was given a hero’s welcome by the crowd as he took to the stage.

With his ‘Kukere’ and ‘Your Waist’ anthems, the singer, expectedly, wowed the crowd into a wild moment, singing and dancing to his native ‘Etighi’ dance steps.

And then it was the turn of 2face to thrill the crowd. Tunes after tunes, the Nigerian multi-award winning music sensation got the crowd rocking back and forth, as the night wore on into the early hours of Sunday.

It was not just a night of music alone, one of Nigeria’s finest comedians, Julius Agwu, thrilled the crowd with his rib-cracking jokes.

It was obvious the fun- seekers wished the show didn’t end.
