Work begins on Mr Latin rehab centre

The Latin Foundation set up by star actor, Otunba Bolaji Amusan, to cater for the needs of the less-privileged, has begun work on the first phase of the programme with foundation-laying of an acquisition and rehabilitation centre.

The foundation-laying of the two plots of land located at the Federal Housing Estate, Elega, Abeokuta, Ogun State was performed by the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa.

The gigantic project when completed will comprise administrative office, vocational learning centres, car park, hall, library and garden, among others.

The Executive Director of the Foundation, Otunba Bolaji Amusan, said he had been nursing the ambition for over 15 years because of the hardship he passed through before coming to limelight through the theatre profession.

Amusan, who disclosed that he tasted poverty that could have turned him into a vagabond, stressed that “It’s a clear fact that empty hand is the devil’s workshop. So, I resolved to set up the foundation to take youths away from the streets and provide a skill acquisition and rehabilitation centre for them.

“The foundation is not for personal enrichment as bastardized by some people, but it is to help people. I drew my inspiration from Bill Gate.”

While calling for support from corporate bodies and individuals, he expressed optimism that the first phase of the project would be completed in the next four months.

Amusan, whose foundation recently empowered 25 widows with working tools, assured that on completion of the project, all necessary facilities would be provided for use by all inmates.

However, the Governor, in his speech, assured his administration’s support for the project, which he described as viable and laudable.

Adeyemi Ikuforiji, is billed to speak on “The necessity for entertainment-enabling laws in Lagos State” on Wednesday, December 18, while ace Juju musician, King Sunny Ade, will speak on “Music, the big machine that will rank into any platform”. Also, former governor of Lagos PMAN, Dr. Adewale Ayuba, will deliver a lecture titled “Curbing the menace of piracy”.

While speaking on this event, the incumbent governor of Lagos PMAN, Kabiyesi Ayinde Olomide, said the music exhibition and carnival is in conjunction with the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture.

According to him, “The idea is a new innovation aimed at telling the history of the now buoyant music industry.  Some people don’t know the history of music. They don’t know where the industry is coming from. All these old format of music presentations will be on parade at the exhibition centre.”

The new generation believes only in CDs. Through the exhibition, we will be able to show what the industry has gone through, in terms of changes and positive innovations. They will see gramophones, turntables and cartridges, among other musical gadgets. Music Label owners, Music Promoters Association of Nigeria (MUPAN); Music Advertisement Association of Nigeria (MAN) and the Alaba CD sellers, among other stakeholders, will have their stands and will provide some of the exhibition materials. Companies will also be on ground to showcase other products. There will be a permanent stage for different artistes to perform throughout the period of the exhibition.”

The Mainland based-Fuji artiste further said, “This is one of the ways we hope to make PMAN attractive to every artiste again. We want PMAN to regain its lost glory. It will be free for participants and exhibitors will have to see the organizers for allocation of spaces.”

A member of the organizing committee and deputy governor, Lagos State PMAN, Alhaji Fatai Tijani, said the programmed is being supported by agencies such as LASSRA, LASRAB, Inland Revenue and Eagle Paints,

Also, Comrade Ewetade Monsur, secretary, Lagos PMAN, said, “It is a bi-annual event and, at least, one thousand participants are expected at the maiden edition.”

  • Soyinka gathers poets, activists for Mandela

Soyinka gathers poets, activists for Mandela

Prior to the interment of the late South African President, Nelson Mandela, at a private ceremony in Qunu, his country home, on Sunday, the Nigerian art community last Friday took time out to celebrate the memories of the late freedom fighter.

Led by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, it was an assemblage of political activists, public commentators and literary figures, who are noted for their undaunted campaigns for good governance.

The passing of the South African icon provided yet another opportunity to mirror the unique place of sacrifice in leadership. Through thought-provoking poems, musicals and dance drama, the crowd, at the Freedom Park, venue of the Lagos Tribute, savoured with great interest, the eulogies on an extraordinary mortal.

Grammy nominee, Femi Kuti, excited the crowd, performing with his Positive Force Band. His show at the event was complemented by other groups, including the Lagos City Chorale, Crown Troupes of Africa and the Black Image Theatre, among others.

High-ranking Nigerians at the event included the Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; his counterpart from Rivers State, Honourable Rotimi Amaechi; Consulate General of the South Africa, Lulu Louis Mnguni; Director-General, Centre for Black Arts and African Civilisation, CBAAC, Professor Tunde Babawale; Barrister Femi Falana; Professor J.P Clark; President of Campaign for Democracy (CD), Dr. Joe Odumakin; Professor Kole Omotosho and literary guru, Odia Ofeimun, among others.

Soyinka’s poem, No, I Say, was a rendition that highlighted selflessness, courage and sacrifice, dwelling on Mandela’s refusal to trade his incarceration for freedom at the expense of other activists who were serving in other prisons. The poem explains how Mandela refused to accept some negotiations, in spite of how some African leaders had pressed him into accepting conditions for his release.

Governor Amaechi launched a direct one on the political situation in Nigeria, asking for a common rise against corruption and corrupt leaders.

“You heard about $50 billion, but nobody is talking. In some countries, people will be on the streets. If you don’t take your destiny in your hand, we, leaders, will continue to steal. It is because you have stoned nobody that we are stealing,” Amaechi said, with reference to the money said to be missing from the Excess Crude Account.

Reacting to the governor’s remarks, Ofeimum urged Nigerians to join hands by wrestling corrupt leadership as a way of returning the country to its past glory. His rendition, through a dance drama, A feast of return, complemented his thoughts on the issue. One would have thought that his position was pre-planned to meet the governor’s query.

Known for his elevated literary style on political matters, Governor Aregbesola noted that Mandela was not only the symbol of the struggle, but an individual who defined the trajectory of his country.

He took his peg from the rare spirit of forgiveness, which Mandela preached after his release. He described Mandela’s ingenuity as an “unsurpassable grace and that he (Mandela) brought no baggage of malice from prison. And he still forgave his jailers.”

Everybody who spoke at the event left no one in doubt of the virtuous life of Mandela, hinging their thoughts on the need to immortalize him by emulating his legacy.

Apparently impressed by the gathering and all that was said about his countryman, Mnguni thanked the organizers, while also noting that “We have lost a giant and we are going to miss him visiting the sick, old people’s homes, orphanages and home of abandoned children. We are going to miss that voice that preaches reconciliation, respect for fellow men and peace.

Dr Sid, Tiwa Savage to compere 2013 Headies

Following several months of planning, Nigerian superstars, Tiwa Savage and Dr Sid, have been named hosts for the 2013 edition of The Headies music awards.
According to the organizers, both artistes have been selected in line with the awards’ tradition of picking talented and inspiring entertainers to host the ceremony, which parades some of the continent’s biggest entertainers.
Speaking on The Headies, Tiwa, who was full of commendation, said, “Being the eighth year, it’s not easy to be consistent in a country like Nigeria. So, I give kudos to the organizers for creating an award by Nigerians for Nigerians. It’s always sketchy when the nomination list comes up, like this year. We are not going to touch on that. We’ll just wait for the night and address those issues; and then, we’ll go ‘all Kanye West’ on the awards.”
Dr. Sid was also full of excitement, saying, “I’ve been trying to host this event for the past six years. I had waited to be called to no avail; but this year, I’m one of the hosts. I’m so emotional right now and I’m glad for this opportunity.”
The eighth edition of The Headies comes up on December 26, at the Grand Ball Room of the Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos.
Also known as the Hip-HopWorld Awards, the event, according to the organizers, seeks to honour urbane music and hip-hop culture.
Produced and presented to match some of the biggest awards shows from around the world, The The Headies annually celebrates deserving Nigerian music stars and gives honour to whom it is due, while also encouraging many to raise their game in order to enter the prestigious Headies alumni.

  • Daniel Ademinokan’s email hacked

    Daniel Ademinokan’s email hacked

IF the information available to us is anything to go by, it appears that the industry is yet to see the end of the breakup of the marriage between movie director, Daniel Ademinokan, and his estranged wife, actress Doris Simeon.

Daniel’s email was said to have been hacked, thereby exposing some of his confidential chats.

The email in question read in part:

“Good day, sir. How is the family, sir? And how is the ministry too, sir? I hope all is well. I know that by now, you’re probably tired of my case, but you are the only one I can speak to at this point.

“Sir, it seems the moment Doris speaks to everyone and brings out her ‘acting’, people just flip and turn.

“Nobody sees when she calls, threatens and curses the life out of me and everything else. But I have always taken it with a pinch of salt.

“As you said, sir, she has a right to be angry and do anything, but I equally have a right to have my son and look out for his best interest. I have a right to be angry and run to the press to talk about all her infidelity and affairs, but I chose not to because I was the fool who looked away because I wanted to keep my home. I was the one playing ‘mumu’ for her.

“After all the lies she told in court, am I still supposed to just be granting her every single request and need? She lied that she had not seen David and me since 2011. This is the same girl that came to Abuja twice to see David and me. The same girl that I flew to Lagos to see personally and privately to discuss David’s custody. This was in January. We also met in London in March, when I went to shoot a music video. I have pictures to prove it. I even gave her money to shop as well. It was in London she told me about her new affair with Wale. I didn’t crucify her; I just told her to be careful and find true happiness, period! What she does with herself is really none of my direct business.

“Pastor, based on what you and I discussed, I offered to fly her to the United States twice a year, all expenses paid for by me, so she can bond with David. I also said she could come one million times if she likes, but I would only pay for two trips. But she refused. Now, she still wants to be calling me every second to bother me about David in private, when she is making a mess of my character in the press and the public. She is using everything and everyone out there to mess me up and I’m supposed to still give her audience and grant all her wishes?

“Pastor, na this girl life I go tie my whole existence to? How can I continue to be civil with her when she is playing dirty and acting holy to everybody?

“Nobody is seeing what I’m seeing and it is just a pity. She does not care about David. She is doing all this gra gra just to save face. She wants to ruin David’s life all in the name of winning!

“Pastor, below is a conversation I had with Doris before your trip to the US that we spoke. How does this show that I have been mean to her? How does this show that I kept her away from David? She used to talk to him every single day. The dates are right there and she has just been lying to everyone. I was forced to send this to you because I am just tired of all her endless lies and pretence.

“I’ve since refused to speak to her because she cannot be killing me on both sides. If she wants to talk and dialogue, she should get outta court and stop messing me up in the press with her media sugar daddies. If she wants to stay in court, I don’t have a problem with that. She should leave me alone and do according to the court’s rulings.”

Although Doris couldn’t be reached for comment, her publicist simply said she had decided to keep mum over the matter.

It will be recalled that Daniel allegedly relocated to the US with actress Stella Damasus sometime last year.
