  • ‘God ordained marriage’

    ‘God ordained marriage’

Penultimate Saturday, at Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, the daughter of an Ilorin-based lawyer, John Olusola Baiyeshea, Abigail Yetunde and her beau, Michael Babajide Alabi tied the nuptial knot. ADEKUNLE JIMOH reports

The solemnisation of the wedding between AbigailYetunde, daughter of an Ilorin-based legal practitioner, John Olusola Baiyeshea and her beau, Michael Babajide Alabi took place at the United Missionary Church of Africa (UMCA), Tanke, a suburb in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

As early as 9.30am on that day, human and vehicular movement on the Chapel College Road, off the University of Ilorin Road, Tanke was heavy.

Dignitaries from all walks of life graced the colourful wedding.

Members of Baiyeshea’s constituency – the Bar and even the Bench – were not left out they turned out in large number.

The numerous canopies and television monitors outside the expansive hall of the hilltop church testified to number of guests who graced the occasion.

Before the exchange of marital vows, the officiating minister, Reverend Gbenga Odebiri, exhorted the new couple, saying: “Marriage was ordained for companionship, mutual living, help and comfort for another both in prosperity and adversity.

“It was ordained for procreation that children should be brought up in the fear and admonition of the Lord to the praise of His Holy name and it was ordained in order that the natural instinct and affection implanted by God might be hallowed and directed aright, that those who are called by God to this holy estate should continue therein in the pureness of living.”

Also, Evangelist Isaac Omoleyin of the World Assembly Church, said the institution of marriage came from God.

Quoting from Genesis 2:18, he said: “Unceasing prayers, forgetting resolved issues and ability to forgive each other,” are some of the factors that ensure the sustenance of marriage.

After declaring Alabi and Abigail husband and wife, Revd Jonathan John Issa presented the marriage certificate to the couple. The couple and their parents then signed the marriage register.

At the end of the service, the couple posed for photograhps with family members and well-wishers before they moved to the M and M Events, where guests were lavishly entertained.

The bridegroom was decked in a white shirt with an ox blood bow tie and an ash colour suit on top of a pair of black trousers.

The couple who arrived at the venue of the reception at 1:53pm was led into the elegantly decorated hall by the bridal train. The couple danced to the admiration of all into the hall.

After a short prayer, the chairman of the occasion, Emmanuel Baiyekusi, said God made the day a reality so that all glory would be His.

“Bringing up a family is very important. If your parents have been married for four decades and are still together, I call it the miracle of commitment. That means you have to be committed,” he enjoined the new couple.

Dr S. K. Adedoyin supervised the cutting of the cake designed in white and a sprinkling of black.

Father of the bride Baiyeshea expressed happiness

“I feel happy. I thank God for making this a reality. I give honour and glory to God. That is the summary of how I feel.

“My piece of advice to the newly wedded is for them to surpass the records of we, their parents. I mean if God has helped us to do well, they should do better and we will pray for them to do better.”

In his vote of thanks, the groom, Alabi, described the large turn-out as a show of goodwill for him.

He also thanked the Baiyesheas for giving their daughter to him, promising to be a good and caring husband.

  • Technical Speech Aids- Multimedia

    Technical Speech Aids- Multimedia

It’s great to have here again today. We have been exploring the technical speech for the past few weeks. Last week, we started looking at the aids you need to deliver an effective technical speech. One of those aids is Handout. We stated that there are different types of handouts, and they may be called by different names in different professions and within different contexts. Each of them has its peculiarity and format, so, we examined some general uses of Handouts last week.

This week, we shall be considering Multimedia as another aid of technical speech. Let us start with a definition of multimedia. Multimedia is a term used to describe both the channel and the equipments used for transmitting a combination of message forms. If we want to describe traditional media, we may say something like this; newspapers contain texts, radios contain audio and TV contains audio-visuals. Consequently, when we want to describe multimedia, we say that it contains a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video and interactive content forms. Multimedia contributes a lot to the effective and clear delivery of a technical speech.

As far as technical speech is concerned, a wide variety of hardware or equipments may fall under multimedia. For the sake of our discussion here, however, we shall limit ourselves to computers, projectors and sound systems. As for the software, there are several presentation packages, but I will prefer to stick with PowerPoint (more on this later). Some public speaking trainers are of the opinion that technical aids, such as the multimedia, can be distracting. They also believe that a technical fault can easily result in the overall failure of the speech. Though I agree with them that those scenarios may occur under some circumstances, they should not discourage us. If using multimedia will give us an A++ performance, should we settle for a B performance just because of fear? I think not! Since we know that unforeseen events may occur, all we have to do is to plan a backup. We will not be able to go into all those details here, however.

    Characteristics of Multimedia

•It is Illustrative: multimedia helps the speaker to illustrate his/her ideas. You can present diagrams and picture that would have been difficult to explain if your audience does not see them.

•It is interesting: it captures the attention of the audience. Because it contains moving pictures, sounds, etc, it is difficult for people’s minds to stray. Nevertheless, the speaker must be careful so that the multimedia does not distract people from his/her speech; remember, it is an aid and not a replacement.

•It makes use of projection: when using multimedia, the information on a computer is projected to a distant surface so that the audience can see it. It can also be played on smaller screens where they are available.

•It helps the speaker to avoid reading notes: when speakers make use of multimedia, they look up at the information on the screen instead of looking down all the time at their notes. They look up and the audience sees their faces. In fact, when a speaker reads off a screen, it is far preferable to reading from a note because in the case of the screen, the audience flows along too.

    PowerPoint

PowerPoint is one of the packages in Microsoft Office. It contains templates that you can easily adapt for your presentation. First, you must select your most preferred design, and then you start to include the texts. Of course, the name is PowerPoint presentation, so, it should contain points and not notes. Try as much as possible to resist the temptation of copying your speech from the word document and pasting it all on the template. Use points that your audience can easily remember while you do an oral explanation of the rest. You can also include pictures and audiovisual materials. One of the aspects I love most in PowerPoint is the ability to animate the contents (determining the way the text and other contents appear and disappear from the slides).

You can combine the use of PowerPoint with handout. PowerPoint presentation contains the summary of the speech for the sake of presentation while the handout contains the details. There is so much more to learn about the use of technical aids in technical speech. As usual, I suggest you look for other materials that may enlighten you more. You can also contact me for further information on the subject. Training and practice are essential in public speaking.

  • All hail new chiefs

    All hail new chiefs

    •Tinubu women’s day of glory

Lagos monarch Oba Rilwan Akiolu has marked his 70th birthday and 10 years on the throne in grand style. He installed Mrs Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of All Progressives Congress (APC) leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the Iyaloja-General of Lagos and Alhaja Bintu-Fatima Tinubu, widow of the late police chief, Kafaru Tinubu, as the Iyalode of Lagos. TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO reports

For those familiar with the history of Lagos and Abeokuta, the name “Tinubu” will always ring a bell because of the exploits of one of West Africa’s greatest women liberators, Madam Efunroye Tinubu.

Madam Tinubu was born around 1805 at Ijokodo in Egba forest. Ijokodo is in the Gbagura homestead of the Egba. Her father’s name was Olumosa and her mother’s, Nijeede. The name of Nijeede’s mother was Osunsola, who was a big trader in her days. She sold herbs, barks and root and animal skin. Nijeede used to follow her mother on trading trips. Returning from one of these trips in a canoe, she fell into labour and was delivered of a baby girl. The child was named Efunporoye by her father and Osuntinubu by her mother. The name Osuntinubu rose from the mother’s belief that it was the Osun goddess that gave her the child. The name was broken down to Osun-ti-inu-ibu-wa, “Osun goddess has come right from the depths of the water (to present this baby to them).

Madam Tinubu rose to become a successful businesswoman and female political figure in Lagos and Egba (Abeokuta). She was decorated with the title of Iyalode of Egba.

Today, Madam Tinubu has several monuments dedicated to her. In Abeokuta, one stands in the town square named after her called ‘Ita Iyalode (Iyalode plaza)’. Likewise the Tinubu Square in Lagos Island attests to her bravery.

Centuries after, Madam Tinubu’s dynasty is waxing stronger. Last year, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo installed Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Aare Ago and his wife, Senator Oluremi as Yeye Aare Ago of Egbaland.

Aare Ago is a war title equivalent to Field Marshal in the military. It bestows supreme eminence on the holder. The title was initially known in Abeokuta as Aare-Ona-Kakanfo, the type given to the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola by Alaafin of Oyo.

The Balogun of Ika from Gbagura, the late Chief Anoba was allowed to import this title from Ibadan into Egbaland by the Aare of Ijaye, late Chief Irum.

Chief Anoba became the Aare-Ona Kakanfo of Egbaland.

When he died in 1910, the title was modified to Aare – Ago of Egbaland and the stool became vacant. Palace sources said the 102 years interregnum was due to enormous power/responsibilities associated with the title. The title is reserved for great men.

Oba Gbadebo gave Tinubu the title in recognition of the invaluable services of the Tinubu family to Egbaland and the South west.

Last Tuesday, another history was made in Lagos.

Lagos monarch Oba Rilwan Akiolu as part of activities marking his 70th birthday and 10 years on the throne formally installed Mrs Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the Iyaloja-General of Lagos.

Alhaja Bintu-Fatima Tinubu, widow of the late police Chief, Kafaru Tinubu was installed as the Iyalode of Lagos.

The installation was held at the Iga Idunganran palace in Lagos Island amidst fanfare.

The carnival-like event was witnessed by political big wigs, market leaders, business moguls and heads of corporate organisation.

Mrs Tinubu-Ojo succeeded the late President-General, Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, who died on June 15.

As a mark of honour, markets in the state were shut, with hundreds of traders flocking the palace to felicitate with their new leader.

Clad in white lace, Mrs Tinubu-Ojo, was congratulated and blessed by the monarch.

To Akiolu, the honour bestowed on the Tinubus is a pay back for the support he received from the family while vying for the stool following the death of Oba Adeyinka Oyekan.

Oba Akiolu urged the new Iyaloja to be diligent in her duty.

He said the position was important to the development of market activities in Lagos State and Nigeria at large.

    He prayed for her success.

Also eulogising the new Iyaloja and Iyalode, Oba Gbadebo prayed God to grant the duo long life and prosperity.

“I pray Lagos to witness more developments during your reign,” he said.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu thanked the monarch for honouring her family.

She congratulated Oba Akiolu on his 70th birthday and 10 years on the throne.

“I pray our new Iyaloja-General would always know it for better; the marketers will derive more joy during her reign just like our former Iyaloja-General,” she said.

Senator Tinubu said the new Iyaloja is capable of coordinating market activities in the state.

She said Mrs Tinubu-Ojo was under the tutelage of her predecessor, the late Alhaja Mogaji for years.

“The position of Iyaloja comes with lots of duties and responsibilities. It is expected that she will succeed with her sense of maturity, respect for elders and diligence,” she said.

Senator Tinubu also advised the Iyaloja to use her office to ensure traders’ prosperity in the state.

Wife of former Lagos State Governor Mrs Abimbola Jakande thanked God for making the day a reality.

Mrs Jakande prayed God to give the new chiefs wisdom to discharge their responsibilities.

She congratulated Oba Akiolu on his birthday and coronation anniversary.

Senator Hassan Fasinro congratulated Oba Akiolu and the new chiefs.

Senator Fasinro urged them to be more humble and humane.

The new Iyaloja and Iyalode thanked the monarch and Lagosians for the honour.

They promised to be upright and open in the discharge of their duties.

Alhaja Tinubu described it as an act of God.

“I give glory to God for making the day a reality. I was surprised when I received the news. Tomorrow (Wednesday) is my birthday; this is a perfect birthday gift. I am grateful to our monarch,” she said.

After the installation, guests converged on The Haven for a lavish reception.

King of Fuji Music Alhaji Wasiu Anifowoshe popularly called K1 was on the band stand.

  • Will Smith, wife on trial separation

Will Smith, wife on trial separation

Barely two weeks after Los Angeles-based Nigerian filmmaker, Jeta Amata owned up to the rumoured separation from his wife, Mbong, Hollywwod hunk, Will Smith and wife, Jade Pinkett Smith who live in the same city are said to be undergoing a trial separation.

For three months now, the singer, actor and movie producer is said to be living separately from his wife, and have put their family home up for sale.

The couple who have been married for 15 years, have two kids; Jaden and Willow, although Smith has a 20-year-old son; Trey, from his previous marriage to actress Sheree Fletcher.

News of the crack in their marriage came as a surprise to fans, who have considered the couple to be having one of the most solid marriages in Hollywood.

Indication to the mishap surfaced early in the year, when Jada reportedly suggested that their marriage was on the rocks.

“When you are going through a storm with your spouse, stop thinking about what you ‘believe’ a husband or wife should be,” said Jada, according to a fellow audience member at a charity event.

The actor, who is trending with his current futuristic science thriller, After Earth, is said to be in New Orleans, filming his latest movie Focus, while Jada is believed to have moved into her brother Caleeb’s home in Los Angeles.

This is not the first time the couple has been hit by rumours of marital problems. In April the Hawthorne actress said Will could do “whatever he wants” in their marriage, but later added in a post on Facebook that this did not mean they had an open relationship.

It is not clear what the problem between the two is. Only recently, Jada praised her husband’s parenting efforts: “There are some men who feel like, ‘Listen, I take care of the house and the home. That’s all I need to do. What makes Will the best father in the world to me is that he’s there, not just there in a way that’s traditional; the emotional support he offers his children is immeasurable,” said Jada.

  • Chris Brown craves anger management

    Chris Brown craves anger management

24-year-old American recording artiste, dancer and actor, Chris Brown, who is out of police custody after reportedly breaking a man’s nose in Washington DC, has volunteered himself for rehabilitation, just so he could learn to manage his anger.

A statement from a representative of the controversial artiste said; “Chris Brown has elected to enter a rehab facility. His goal is to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behaviour, enabling him to continue the pursuit of his life and his career from a healthier vantage point.”

This is coming just weeks before his court date in relation to his 2009 assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna. A man; Adams Parker, claimed that Chris broke his nose. Although the singer denied attacking the complainant, his charges were downgraded to a misdemeanor following conflicting witness accounts.

The man he assaulted is said to be receiving treatment in hospital, and has said he would need surgery on his nose.

Brown’s lawyers are concerned that the charge could still violate his parole conditions and jeopardize his current freedom as the Los Angeles Police Department are currently launching an investigation into the matter.

A source close to the artiste told E! News that Brown was a ‘good kid’ at heart, but what he really needed was a rehab and intensive therapy. “He needs help,” the source said. “He keeps self-medicating with weed and alcohol and that’s when he always gets in trouble.”

But police investigation on the Washington scuffle stated that the singer was not under the influence of drugs.

Brown is no stranger to getting in trouble with the law. Since his infamous assault on Rihanna, he has been embroiled in a string of violent offences, including altercations with rapper Drake and singer Frank Ocean.

  • Lady Gaga mourns dog

    Lady Gaga mourns dog

Lady Gaga is said to be devastated, perhaps more, for missing out on saying goodbye to her family’s pet dog before it was buried.

The artiste’s pooch called Alice was put to sleep by a vet after being diagnosed with cancer, but the singer was abroad promoting her new album Artpop when the rest of her family paid their last respect to the dog.

Gaga has taken to twitter to share her memories with fans and reveal her regret at not being there in the dog’s final hours.

“My puppy Alice died. We had to put her down; cancer ate away at a little angel. My daddy is so sad; we all are, lost a member of our family.

“I love being an entertainer but it is so painful sometimes to be away from home. 17 years she held on, so many memories. Nothing beats family.

“I remember her laying my bed; she knew when I was sad, or when I was sick. I should have been there. I just pray Alice found her wonderland.”
