    Unprecedented crowd at ‘Felabration’

This  year’s edition of Fela’s memorial concert; Felabration ended in the wee hours of yesterday, treating music fans and admirers of the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti to a series of dramatic performances that somewhat rekindled the great memories of the Afrobeat precursor.

Sunday night was the peak of the week-long music show that saw almost every known musician in Nigeria struggling for a slot on the stage, just to perform for free. Headliners for the last show were son of the music legend, Femi Kuti and visiting artiste, Ky-Mani Marley, son of late Reggae icon, Bob Marley, but Femi, could only do three songs, giving rooms for Ky-Mani and the huge line-up of volunteered singers to perform.

Like a One Million Man Match, the crowd thronged the New Afrika Shrine, Agidingbi, Lagos, as though they were establishing one of Fela’s best known songs-Movement of the People (MOP), which incidentally was also the name of the political party formed in 1979. The crowd was unprecedented, but perhaps the greater surprise, was the security and crowd control, which did not leave room for pandemonium of any kind.

The show could be said to be bigger than last year’s edition, further establishing the respect Nigerian artiste had for Fela, his music and philosophy. In spite of the increased sitting capacity, the Shrine could still not contain the crowd, throwing the entire environ into a street party. The presence of security agencies including the police, Civil Defense Corps, and men of the Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) enhanced the show’s credibility, and all that the regular orange dress-top ‘bouncers’ called ‘Shrine Police’ had to do, was to concern themselves with the orderliness within.

It was amazing that by 4am on Monday, people were still queuing up to enter to enter the venue. One of the notable performances at the show was one by Burna Boy, who took of his dress, mimicking Fela’s act in his under pants. His show gave rise to murmur among the crowd, most of who felt that Fela, during his lifetime, never really performed in underwear. Worried that Burna Boy, who had closed the show, was the grandson of Benson Idonijie; Fela’s first manager, critics say he should know better. Fela was described as one of the best dresser, who rocked the stage with embroidered attire. The legend was said to be in pants during some of his private times. He was said to go topless only on Saturday night shows called the ‘Comprehensive Night’, where he also painted his face same days, for his traditional devotion.

The show also featured prominent artistes including Fuji music exponent, King Wasiu Marshal (KWAM1), Afrojuju crooner, Sir Shina Peters and female rapper, Weird MC. Others were Tuface Idibia, M.I, Wizkid and Terry G.

Doctors give up on dying musician

    He is stable –Azuka Jebose
Hope appears to be deeming for ailing musician, Mustapha Amego, as family members are asking the public to keep praying for the artiste, who has been down with Colon cancer for some time now.
Amego, a former president of Performing Musicians Employers Association (PMAN), is said to be in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, where doctors were said to have given up on him.
A Facebook post published on his account by his wife, Marie and daughter, Fatema suggests that the artiste is in dire straits:  “…Mustapha has been battling cancer for a few years. Some of you may not have known he was sick, and this news may come as a great surprise. The doctors have done their best; but now it is in God’s hands. We ask you to send him prayers and love.”
But foremost entertainment journalist, Azuka Jebose who is one of Amego’s acquaintances in his heydays dispelled fears early today, saying that the musician is in stable condition: “Nigeria’s great musician, Mustapha Amego, who was Friday placed on critical observation at Maryland Medical Center, is now stable. He would be moved from the ICU of the hospital to regular floor this morning.”
He disclosed that, ‘Musky’, as the artiste is fondly called, will soon be discharged from the hospital and will begin a hospice care at his family home in Maryland.
Just last Friday, his family took him to the hospital where he was immediately transferred to the ICU and placed on a ventilator. On Saturday, Mustapha was said to have requested that the ventilator be removed. He said he wanted to breathe on his own.
He was said to be in top mood yesterday, interacting with visitors, even though he showed signs of weakness. Among the Nigerian entertainers who had visited him in the US was music-comedian, Jude AwayAway.
Few years ago Mustapha Amego was diagnosed with severe Colon cancer. The cancer spread to other organs of his body, and all medical options have been explored without success.
Amego, also called ‘funky mallam’ in his heydays, for his long jerry curled hair-do, is a 6-footer who rocked the Nigerian music scene in the 80s and 90s. For a long time, he anchored the weekly soul train-like music show tagged ‘Sunday Rendezvous’, which was taped at the then Lords Night Club in Maryland, Lagos.
He later went on to become the president of the PMAN in 1993. Shortly after his tenure ended in 1996, he relocated to the United States, where he worked with the Discovery Channel as Content Producer, Editor and Tricaster Operator.
He also produced Nollywood movies including Double Shift (1&2), Ladies in the City (co-produced with Desmond Elliot) and My American Nurse.

  • Jeta Amata separates from wife

    Jeta Amata separates from wife

After five years of marriage, Nollywood producer Jeta Amata has called it quits with wife, Mbong. Reports say the separation has been on for one year, but the couple decided to make it public when they realised it was difficult to mend fences.
It is not clear, the reason the two couldn’t get their marriage to work again, but a close source said it is connected to Mbong’s insistence over her acting career. The couple met in 2001, during a movie audition the young girl partook in, in Calabar.
She was barely 16 and he just had to wait until she was 18 before they started dating. In 2008, they had a daughter, and decided to get married. The couple moved over to Los Angeles, the movie hub of America few years ago, just so they could operate at the level of Hollywood.
Amata, who broke the news to a notable blog, is quoted to have accepted blame for the separation, describing his woman in warm terms: “Mbong is an amazing mother, an incredible wife…all the time we were together she would never let any other person cook my food…she was faithful and good to me and gave me the best gift in the world, our beautiful daughter. If I didn’t cage her so much maybe we would still be together. I stole her youth and didn’t let her live her dream so it was better to let her go and find new adventures. She’s happy and so am I. Despite the fact that we are no longer together, we are still good friends. She even lives close to me here in LA. Things are great between us and I’m happy to see her happy.”
Amata, unlike most Nollywood producers is not known for many movies. He started with Amazing Grace in 2006 and had since done another flick entitled Black November (2012), a story about oil spillage in the Niger Delta region.
Mbong had only acted in these two movies, includingInale (2010), a film director by Amata, for Bongos Ikwue’s daughter, Keke Bongos Ikwue. Although the filmmaker is currently shooting a $15million budget film for the Haitian government, it is not clear if Mbong is a cast in that country’s historical flick.
However, since the separation Mbong has featured in two Nollywood movies, one of them; Forgetting June, produced by Emem Isong, which she came back to Nigeria to shoot.
Jeta, on the other hand is said to have started another romance with Australian actress Viva Bianca, best known for her role as Ilithyia in Spartacus.

Reports say Amata’s upcoming will be starring Bianca. The movie which runs under a working title; Road to Redemption, is said to also have Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson and pop star, Akon, without a trace of Mbong among the cast.

Kaffy, K9 headline Dance Industry Night

THE Official Dance Industry Night, a monthly celebration of dance and dancers has recorded another success as this month’s event which had dance queen, Kaffy, and Trybe Records artiste, K9, went down as planned, to the delight of both organisers and supporters alike.

Though heavy with a five-month pregnancy, Kaffy still made time out to excite her teeming fans. She left very little out to the delight of her fans. When asked why she still decided to dance regardless of her condition, the dancer replied, “Pregnancy na sickness?”

Trybe Records artiste, K9, was also on ground as promised giving the crowd a feel of his single Kokoma. Despite not being much of a dancer himself, he managed to keep the crowd elated and in tune with his performance.

The Official Dance Industry Night is an initiative of Dance TV, spearheaded by its C.E.O, Efe Richard-Lagos, who described the idea as a medium to create more awareness about the existence of a dance industry, as opposed to it being perceived as just one segment of the music industry.

“We are happy about the success of this second episode, when we say we will do something we always deliver,” Richard-Lagos stated.
