Once upon a child actor Nigerian mums wary of Miley Cyrus’ porn tale

Disney drama series character, Miley Cyrus became the concern of most Nigerian parents, following recent controversies, linking the singer/actor to a porn movie.

A group of mothers on the social media BlackBerry platform have expressed concern over the influence that the artiste’s recent portrayal may have on their kids. The group tagged ‘Child Monitors’, while doing a review of their kids’ favourite foreign TV channels, records that Disney is one of the addictive channels and that the character of the singer in the series is admirable.

Aisha Harris, a Brow Beat assistant at Slate, said in a recent review tagged ‘The Long, Weird Tradition of Dirty Disney’, of the bad influences of some of the series actors. “There’s a spiritual kinship between Escape from Tomorrow and the adult careers of former Disney darlings Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Miley Cyrus: Their hypersexual performances similarly skewer the old Disney façade, titillating their audiences with “bad” behavior.

“Moore’s film—and, perhaps, Miley Cyrus’s career thus far—suggests that there’s still an interest in seeing Disney dirtied. You just have to take it a little bit farther, get a little bit weirder, and maybe stretch the boundaries of copyright law just a little more than those who came before.” Harris posited.

Reports say Cyrus is being offered a $1 million porn film deal in a video. The actress used to be loved by many in her Disney heydays as the innocent Hannah Montana. ‘Child Monitors’ is worried that her recent adult-appropriate image that is obviously bad for kids.

The retailer labelled the signer as an ‘empowered’ and ‘unapologetic’ woman who they believe needs another vehicle to show the world she’s ‘not a little girl anymore.’

  • Pa Kasumu: family waits on Fashola

Pa Kasumu: family waits on Fashola

Family members of veteran actor, Kayode Odumosu, otherwise called ‘Pa Kasumu’ are wary of the story of the proverbial housewife, who threw away the tadpole-infested water, thinking the rumbling cloud will emit torrent. Reacting to the rumour that Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has offset the N12 million needed for the treatment of their father’s kidney, heart and stroke ailment, the actor’s son, Jide Odumosu, told The Nation that, although the Governor facilitated a medical test which was conducted on Saturday, it is not yet certain, the exact help which the Lagos state helmsman may be rendering.

Jide said it was necessary to clear the air, as there are media reports, stating that their family has collected N12 million from the Governor in lieu of the actors’ medical treatment abroad.

“The truth of the matter is that the Governor has intervened by asking us to take him to a hospital in Ikoyi for a medical test. It is not true that the Governor has given us N12 million. The Governor himself has not told us that he is going to foot the bill. But he paid for the medical test which was performed on him on Saturday.”

Asked if the Governor visited the actor personally, Jide said he (Fashola) was represented by his personal doctor. He would not know how much the test cost, but said it was totally on the Governor’s bill. He disclosed that apart from the two tests done on Saturday, another one is expected to be conducted today, also on the Governor’s bill.

On how much has been realised from public contributions so far, Jide said the amount received so far is less than N1.5 million, out of which N1 million was donated by a Commissioner in Lagos State. Responding to whether his father’s colleagues have been of any help so far, he noted that the N1 million donation was facilitated by some of his (Pa Kasumu) colleagues in the film industry.

Jide revealed that some of the tests carried on the actor where to determine the state of his brain, as the ailment appears to be affecting his brain. He said the second test was necessitated by the initial one, whereby the neck region was discovered to have also been affected.

Reports say the actor is being affected by partial stroke, to which his son admitted, said to be progressive. He expressed fear that the situation is already affecting the actor’s sight and speech. As it is now, his father suffers a heart, liver and brain problem, Jide, second son of the actor, confirmed.

Should Fashola’s aid reach the Odumosu’s it will be another of such help from the Governor, who, last year, donated N4.5 million to ‘Fuji House of Commotion’ star, Ngozi Nwosu, for a medical surgery abroad.

  • Ripples over ‘Nigeria’s Got Talent’ eight-year-old winner’s prize money

Ripples over ‘Nigeria’s Got Talent’ eight-year-old winner’s prize money

•Family: organisers yet to redeem N10m cash prize

•Organisers: she was paid within 28 days after the show

She spoke like a little charming girl with tall dreams. Her speech moved many to tears, as little Amarach Uyanne promised to use part of her N10 million prize money to assist orphanage homes, and the rest, to achieve her dream of becoming a Medical Doctor.

Date was December 9, 2012, but 10 months down the line, it appears her prize money is still in transit. The pupil of Primary 5 from Delta State, was declared winner of last year’s mix-genre reality show; ‘Nigeria’s Got Talent’ sponsored by telecommunication company, Airtel. And perhaps, each passing day, she would look at the picture of the dummy cheque, the smiles on everybody’s face as they cheered her to victory, asking her mum when the actual money will get to them.

“That cannot be true,” said Obinna Anichie, General Manager Brand Assets, & Marketing Properties at Marketing Director Bharti Airtel International, apparently taken aback when confronted with the claim. Looking ruffled, Anichie stuttered: “that’s not true…” he repeated the statement, shaking his head in disbelief. He said he has been in Nairobi for awhile, and only just got back to Nigeria. Quickly, he summoned the Managing Director of Rapid Blue Format, Rotimi Pedro.

Pedro debunked the claim, stating that the girl received her money less than 28 days after the competition. “She has been paid her money. The tradition is that we present the dummy to the winner on stage and within 28 days, they are paid. Amarachi got her money less than 28 days after the grand finale. She was meant to be here today, but it would be irresponsible of anyone to pull her out of school. She performed at the Airtel Rising Stars event about two weeks back.” Pedro said to The Nation at the formal unveiling of Season 2 of the show. Corroborating his position, Adaora Mbelu, Project Manager for the show, posited that Amarachi, was truly paid.

The controversy on whether or not Amarachi has been paid her prize money arose, when a family source to the dancer claimed that the show organisers are yet to redeem their pledge.

The source said Amarachi’s mother has decided to ‘leave the matter to God’ after several attempts to get the show organisers to pay up the pledge. The source noted that they had thought of taking the case to court, but for fear of losing other social benefits from the organisers.

It would be recalled that Amarachi had performed alongside Nigerian music heavy-weight, 2face Idibia, at the Agege Township Stadium on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013, during the closing ceremony of the Airtel Rising Stars Africa Championship.

Asked where Amarachi got money to shoot her recent video, the source said the money was sourced personally, and just so, the aspiration of the little girl is not left unaided.

The source said Amarachi’s mum has been warning them to desist from the issue, asking them to lie to whoever asks them, that the prize money had been redeemed.

Perhaps sensing media’s inquisitiveness on the matter, Mrs. Uyanne, would picked her calls several times, but did not utter a word, when The Nation attempted to speak with her on the matter.

Another season of the talent show has been announced by organizers, with the first leg of auditions already done in Abuja last week.

  • Fela’s memorial concert kicks off today

Fela’s memorial concert kicks off today

Afro beat King, Femi Kuti and ragga star, Kymani Marley, son of Reggae music legend, Bob Marley are the top acts for this year’s ‘Felabration’ festival, a free-for-all annual concert of music and arts which began in 1998, in memory of late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

A highly revered music brand, Afrobeat and the personality of its late precursor, has endeared it to players in other genres of music.

It is perhaps due to this feat, that apart from late Bob Marley’s son who is billed to fly down for the event, the show will also feature the likes of Juju music maestro, King Sunny Ade, Fuji music exponent, King Wasiu Marshal (KWAM1), and contemporary hip hop artiste, 2Face Idibia and rap star Jude Abaga, popularly called MI.

The event has grown into a mega week-long musical event in Nigeria which attracts thousands of visitors annually to the New Africa Shrine from all over the world, and is an official tourist destination of The Lagos State Government, a major sponsor of the show.

Femi Kuti announced that the week-long event begins today with a symposium titled: Movement of the People: The Fela/Bob Marley Perspective. He said tomorrow, October 15, 2013 is the commencement of the music segment of the event.

However, reports say, Nana Rita Marley, wife of late reggae music super star, Bob Marley, who had agreed to be the symposium guest speaker has suddenly taken ill. Her doctors in Ghana confirmed her health condition to organisers of the show. The message indicated that she is indisposed and may have to be on bed rest longer than expected.

Kuti, whose role is also to ensure adequate security for the event said the music segment of the festival will take place inside the New Afrika Shrine, Ikeja, Lagos. “To this extent, very tight security measures have been put in place to protect lives and property of fans. Apart from the highly efficient Afrika Shrine Security Force, the efficient RRS arm of the Lagos State Police Command would be stationed at strategic locations

The high point of this year’s festival will be the Sunday October 20, performance of Femi Kuti and Kymani Marley on same stage.

  • Beninoise singer Angelique Kidjo held sway at Lagos concert

Beninoise singer Angelique Kidjo held sway at Lagos concert

Sunday night, was another testimony of the silent passion Nigerians have for African music. It was the 4th edition of the popular ‘Love Music Love Life Luxury Concert’, put together by Jazz-inclined radio station, Smooth FM 98.1.

The Eko Hotel venue of the concert swelled with crowd that may have stemmed from the hype built around 10-time Grammy award winner, Chaka Khan, who was the headliner act of the show. But, with Angelique Kidjo mounting the stage before the lead act, and engaging the crowd in a seemingly unending thrill, many had wondered if the American singer will be able to match the tempo already created.

Kidjo’s spontaneous performance with Nigeria’s Soul singer, Asa, appeared to have set a perfect mood for the evening. Then, with amazing energy, the singer brought her fire to the stage, performing timeless hits like ‘Wombolobo’, ‘Agolo’ and several other hits of the 90s.

“It has been a long time coming, and I’m happy to be back home,” said Kidjo, after her fifth song on the night; a Yoruba language tune which the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador did, on the right of the child to education. Then she did another homely one in which she eulogised the memory of Aruna Ishola, the legendary ‘Apala’ maestro.

Like South African Miriam Makeba’s voice, Kidjo’s was one of Africa’s, which trended in their heydays. Engaging a section of the audience on stage, together, they danced, reminiscent of the yesteryear, as the Beninoise singer reeled out one song after another, combing enchanting rhythm with afro-centric dance steps.

Although the reception for Chaka Khan was loud during her entry, the excitement of the crowd soon waned, with the natural tendency to relax for the night. Such was the mood in which the show gradually ended, as the music buffs trooped out.

Perhaps another talent of note was 25-year-old soul singer and pianist, Kaline Akinkugbe, who opened the show, as the supporting act of the night. Typical of her style, she fused jazz, funk and afrobeat to arrest her listeners.

High point of the three-hour concert which was anchored by Smooth FM’s OAP The Genie, was when Chaka Khan and Angelique Kidjo sang together. They had performed Chaka Khan’s 1983 smash hit song ‘Ain’t Nobody’, giving the late crowd the excitement which others may have missed.

  • I don’t believe in marriage – Femi Kuti

I don’t believe in marriage – Femi Kuti

WITH Felabration 2013 coming up, have you been able to achieve the dream behind setting it up?

Definitely! We are all Nigerians and we know what it means to run a festival at that level with no cost, with no major sponsor for over 13 years. I think we have to be applauded. It’s a feat that hasn’t been achieved in Nigeria. All the great festivals we know in Nigeria have broken down. Everything doesn’t last and then it’s free. It is little or no issues with security. The security is very tight. We hear of little or no incident and with the crowd of over 10,000 people coming in, week-in week-out, I think we have to be commended. And we have to thank everybody for being peaceful. We thank the media for covering the story for us, we have to thank the musicians that perform for free, everyone that has put their little bit to make it a great success. Now Felabration is everywhere in the world especially in major cities, the world over. The event my sister started has grown.

Will Rita Marley’s child be performing?

I think we are having visa problems with him. He is not her child but one of Bob Marley’s sons. He has agreed to come and the contract has been finalized, we are awaiting his visa. If he gets his visa, that’s good. We had a number of bands coming in from America but we heard that they cannot get their passport because of the shut down. We have some Afro beat bands coming from the United States of America but with the shut down, we don’t know. However, we have some bands coming in from Ghana and of course our great Nigerian musicians like 2face, Kwam 1, Davido, Wizkid, Eedris Abdulkareem, Kennis Music and other rascals including myself will all be there.

Apart from finance, what other challenges are you encountering?

I think the major challenges are finance and security. We would love a situation where we would pay the artistes well and dictate the pace. Now the artiste will tell us what day they are free and all that but normally, what it should be is to tell the artiste when we want him to perform and pay him. But we cannot dictate the pace to the artiste when they are doing you a favour. Felabration has to bend to everybody’s rules. We hope to have a situation where we can dictate when an artiste performs. The next thing is to get the museum working. Apparently, Lagos state has bought the other land for the car park but we are still looking for major sponsors that will make the museum work properly. We have big dreams that we want to put in place, only big money can put this into motion. We have managed to keep this place tidy, clean and it is well kept without major money. Hopefully, we’ll get the car park and the guest house running before the next Felabration.

Does the Fela Broadway Show also have an input in this year’s edition?

I’m sure you know what it cost them to come last time? They are a cast of about 50. By the time you talk about their air ticket, housing them, and so on, you would know what I mean. I think it was the Lagos State Government that brought them the last time and I knew what they had to do to bring them. Eventually, what we are going to be focusing on is new talents and more bands. I will love a situation where we do not have only hip hop people miming to their tunes but we want to show the dexterity and talents Africans are gifted with. I would love to bring in more bands in the future. I think this will be the priority of Felabration.

Outside Felabration, what is the family’s stand on Fela’s biopic being packaged by an American company recently?

I don’t know about it. There are many things I don’t know about. I don’t think it’s done yet. This is a movie that has been in the works for about five years now. I’m sure you know it is not a film that they do overnight. They have to do the burning of the house, the soldiers, et al. If they are going to do a movie of that magnitude, it’s going to be a great movie. It is going to take time. They have been talking about this movie for ages now.

Does the family have any plan to do that?

No. We are only going to give them the license to do it. We have a legal team that deals with all of these things. My own duty as a member of the estate is to give the approval. I have signed the contract ages ago and I know maybe it will take another two to three years before this dream will materialize if it does. I even believe the first contract we signed for five years would have to be renewed if the film has not been completed within that time frame. When my father died, that was in the making but that contract expired, so they had to sign a new contract. And because there is no money in the music business, the family has been very lenient when discussing with all these people because, we all know about piracy. Everybody is downloading his music, so you have to be very understanding. Everybody wants to make money, so the family has had to be very cool with who is giving authority, how they give the authority. We have a good legal team handling all these for the family of course; we have to still protect the integrity of the family.

Given the status quo of the country, will you say your father has been vindicated and was misunderstood in his lifetime?

He was misunderstood for a purpose because he saw corruption and he knew what corruption was going to do and those involved with corruption wanted to get away with dictatorship and corruption which was what he was against. And because he used his own unconventional way of protesting, it didn’t go down well with the authorities. Then the authorities controlled the media up to a point until after Daily Times, when other media houses came because we have to remember that it was only government newspapers and TVs, so the story was told from the government perspective until other private news outlets and magazines started to come out helping Fela’s story to be seen from another point of view.

Are you saying that you are different specie?

I am probably more diplomatic because I have learnt from what I saw of him. First, you have to understand the political climate we live in. Let us remember who voted for Obasanjo? Except if we want to be dishonest with ourselves, Obasanjo won the first election, clean and clear. What would Fela have done if he was alive and this same Nigerians still went to vote for this same Obasanjo? Didn’t they hear Fela sing about this man? Then, it is still this same Nigerians that were criticizing this man and they know.

In his lifetime, Fela described you as a better sax player; he is master of the organ, are you honing your skills further?

I can never be better than him on the organ but definitely I will floor him on the sax. He knew it and except you are a Fela fanatic, you will not want to accept it and I’m not boasting, it’s a fact and he knew it. There are many things I can do with the sax and that is because there are many reasons why he did not get to the level I got to. The beatings first of all; Fela could not hold the sax because they broke his shoulder blade, so many people did not know he was suffering a lot of internal pain especially after 1977- the burning of the house. Fela was suffering a lot of pain; he couldn’t even hold the sax well. Like I said, the child has to learn from his father. I think I have stepped up my game and don’t forget I was not trained like Fela was trained. Fela was trained to play the piano. The piano I am playing, I am playing it like I have practiced it for 13 years but finding a voice has been a major challenge. Many people that are great pianist, you don’t hear of them because they can’t find a voice. What I have done is I have used my knowledge to find a voice even on the trumpet

How will you rate your album?

I think it is my best album without doubt. It’s a very frightful album. I have a fear that production wise, I might not be able to beat it.  Production wise, it is definitely the best. It’s comparable to the Shoki Shoki album that won all the awards then. I think the last album, Africa for Africa, would have probably done as well if I had recorded it in Europe or in France but that was recorded here and we had a lot of technical issues here that the studio could not meet up with the international standard. That album, people in the Grammy saw the talent and it got nominated. If this one gets nominated again for the Grammy, I don’t know if it will win but if it gets nominated, I will definitely not be surprised. All the major critics worldwide say it is my best work.

At over 50, some people say it seems you became more sexually active?

That is not true. I am not more sexually active. I have even turned off sex a lot now. When you see a beautiful woman, when you reach my age and you have responsibility like me, you will know what I am talking about. As a young man, you would want to chase her. If you decide that in your mind, many things will come into your mind like the responsibility of catering for six children, that the girl may need a new phone, and so on. I used to take care of four children. One is going to Ife, I just paid in. One is in UNILAG, one is doing Film Directorship.

Now I have managed to take them this far, unfortunately if they were my only kids, I will be a free man; I will even be going on holidays. My son is going to University in London, I am thinking of pounds. I can tell you that the mothers of my children, we stay together, we are very serious. You could say we are husband and wife but I don’t believe in marriage. I feel we are like in a marriage situation. I just don’t understand why one man will say I pronounce you man and wife, in that case, I pronounce myself man and wife. I am very different from my father but in a lot of ways like him. Like I couldn’t understand why he married 27 wives. When he married them, he divorced them but if I told you that these women, why are you marrying them? I didn’t have a problem, my mother had a problem but we as kids didn’t have any problem with them. When the problem started in Kalakuta, for us it was fun, I just saw 27 mothers, I didn’t see 27 competitions.

  • COSON drags Daar Communications to court

COSON drags Daar Communications to court

AFTER achieving compliance from Dstv, Cool FM and Eko Hotel for the use of music belonging to artistes under its repertoire, the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) has filed a 10 billion naira copyright infringement action against DAAR Communications Plc, owners of Ray Power FM, Faaji FM and Africa Independent Television (AIT).

Chairman of COSON, Chief Tony Okoroji, said in a statement that his society is determined to increase the royalty distributable to stakeholders in the music industry, in a way that it will match the massive use of music in our nation.

He noted that DAAR Communication, which is Nigeria’s biggest privately owned broadcast network with stations scattered across the country, has not been paying the Society for the music used on its broadcast platforms.

He described the suit No. FHC/L/CS/1392/13 filed on October 7, 2013 on behalf of COSON, at the Federal High Court Lagos, by Intellectual Property lawyer, Justin Ige, as the biggest known copyright infringement action ever in Africa.

In the action, COSON is asking for the sum of N724, 500, 000. 00 (Seven hundred and twenty-four million, five hundred thousand naira only) being amount due as royalties or license fees.

COSON is also asking for general and exemplary damages and a perpetual injunction restraining Ray Power FM, Faaji FM and Africa Independent Television (AIT), managed by Chief Raymond Dokpesi, their agents, privies or servants, from further or other unauthorised copying, broadcast of musical works or sound recordings, belonging to the members, affiliates and assignors of COSON and/or infringement of the copyright in the musical works or sound recordings belonging to the members, affiliates and assignors of COSON.

Okoroji noted that in a similar vein, COSON, last year, was compelled to institute several law suits against some users of music and sound recordings in Nigeria. “This was after every attempt at moral suasion had failed. COSON had to go to court as a last resort. As you know, the court actions were productive. It, however, appears that old habits die hard. Some of the users may have gone back to their old ways and not all have learnt the lesson that the days of free music are gone in Nigeria forever,” he said.

It would be recalled that in April of this year, an argument over music royalty had ensued between Okoroji and Mr. Kenny Ogungbe, Managing Director of RayPower FM, during the maiden edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference at the Eko Hotel and Suites.

Okoroji had confronted Kenny Ogungbe for daring to say in public that COSON owed his label, Kennis Music, money. Ogungbe’s position stemmed from a recent distribution of royalty to some artistes, which the label boss felt was not evenly distributed. “It’s extremely unfair when you pay just a party on a song that has over ten rights… The fact remains that everybody must be paid, because I get messages every time they collect huge sums of money from several media houses; MNET, STV and the likes, and some people are busy sharing money which isn’t theirs at the National Theatre! I’ve said my mind and I have no apologies,” Kenny exclaimed while addressing conference delegates.

But Okoroji had described Ogungbe’s argument as baseless, claiming that the Kennis Music boss is guilty of the same allegations. According to Okoroji, Ogungbe makes music and he’s also the director of RayPower, which he said has not been paying royalties to artistes. “So I don’t know what credibility he has on the subject! We’ve spoken to his station back and forth, yet his station still doesn’t pay royalties to anyone.” he said, fuming.

  • Gulder Ultimate Search 10 Victory eludes the Spears

Gulder Ultimate Search 10 Victory eludes the Spears

THE Spears camp appeared enlivened following Ema’s exit and Ifunanya’sascension to leadership. The members exuded humour. Even with high spirits, the Swords stillgot the better of them in the day’s Key and Prisoner challenge.

It was designed to test the warriors’ coordination skills. The task involved different stages. In the first stage each tribe was to retrieve a key which hung atop two palm trees and then release two members of their tribe locked up in a prison. To retrieve the key, three members of each tribe would tie the end of three ropes entangled up the trees round their waists and in a coordinated movement untangle the ropes to release the key attached to the end of one of the ropes. Once the key is released the prisoners would be set free to begin the next stage.

In the second stage the released prisoners who have a key would dash, one after the other, across the river following a path marked by flags; make their waythrough an obstacle, climb a palm tree to retrieve the puzzle sacks and then make their way back through the same path and drop the puzzle sacks at the assembling point. When the two sacks have been retrieved then the solving would begin.

To untangle the ropes, the Swords used all the female warriors while Eddy and Bobby served as the prisoners. Anthony and Peter played prisoners for the Spears while the remaining three untangled the ropes. Since the Spears were a warrior short, Kunle of the Swords only came in to assist in solving the puzzle.

Both tribes had a good start releasing their prisoners almost at the same time. However while on the tree to unlock the box and retrieve the first puzzle sack, Bobby outsmarted Anthony, thus giving the Swords a good lead and an eventual victory. Their reward was a rooster.

Subsequent episodes continue on African Magic (DSTV), Ebonylife TV, Realstar, Wap TV, ESBS and AKBC at 10pm; and AIT & Galaxy TV at 10:30pm.
