  • For Katherine Obiang, happy times are here

For Katherine Obiang, happy times are here

ON Air Personality, Katherine Obiang is enjoying the best of times at the moment. For the mother of three who recently found love in acting, it is safe to assume that she is gradually beginning to reap the fruits of her passion.

For her role in the critically acclaimed movie, Journey to Self, produced by her co-actor, Ashionye, the actress has been nominated as Best actress in a Supporting role for BON awards 2013 and ZAFAA 2013 as Best New Act.

The excited presenter, cum actress stated that this is a humbling and overwhelming turn in her career. “Honestly I didn’t expect it. I just prayed to God, did a very good job and left the rest so that I won’t let the producers down. Ashionye and Carl Raccah believed so much in me. It is scary, so I was afraid to let them down,” she said.

  • My experience as a trial actor

Having reported activities of the Nigerian entertainment industry for a decade, I have partially been involved in its art, to the degree that it gives me an insider’s perspective, as a reporter. Serving on the board of some movie award schemes and participating in talks that are meant to shape the industry have not only increased my camaraderie with stakeholders, they have helped in the relative depth with which I now understand, analyze, interpret, opinionate and foretell circumstances.

However, one aspect of the pack which is considered the hatchet man’s job is the review of movies from a critic’s point of view. Years back, a film marketer came to my office, crying over a review we did, believing we were being unfair, to say the least. He is a Yoruba man, and so when he spoke to me in my language, almost in tears, his emotion betrayed that perception that dubbed us as sadists, and as some would say, enemies of progress. He lamented over how much the movie cost him, and if he would ever recoup his investment judging by our negative review.

I have visited movie sets and seen all the pieces that were eventually cut and put together to make the final release of the home video. And I bet that, how perfect a film will turn out, depends largely on how beautiful each piece is, in a way that they won’t turn ‘the coat of many colours’ to a rag.

My review of ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ has never been positive. It is more painful when you consider how much was sunk into that project which, with all the touted UK-film propaganda, is yet to get a distributor since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, last month. And I tell you, a lot has to do with the foundation and orientation of the director, no matter how much money is at the disposal of the executive producers. No film director can give what he does not have.

Therefore, my quarrel has never been with low budget films, but with the creative lapse that is brought to bear on some productions. And I am just going to excuse the cast and crew members of a movie and possibly ‘hang’ the film director in my final analysis. After all, it is the director’s story, told in motion picture.

My friend, a former journalist and film marketer had invited me to his movie set. I had all the time, because it was my leave period. Some of the top actors on location thought I had come to spy on them; they are usually wary of a journalists lurking around movie locations, where they (cast and crew) talk and play freely among themselves after each scene wrap.

It was a low-budget film and for some reasons, the lead actor could not make it to location. After some downcast moment, my friend turned to me, asking if I think I could face the camera. He was apparently frustrated that he didn’t think it twice that a rookie would be just more than a risk on his project. He couldn’t afford to lose time and days as the hotel bills and other expenses were being incurred. I told him I couldn’t. Then he got slightly angry and showed it through sarcasm: “But you know how to criticise, ehn? For once, you should have come in front of camera light and see what actors go through… you should try it and see if you will not frail out..”

I collected the script and was looking at it, during which he and his director had some time to chat. I could tell they were considering their chance with me. So when my friend drew nearer again, he said in a persuasive voice; “guy, I know you can do this. Think of what it means to act alongside this actress (yeah, the lead female is a big cross-over thespian). This could be your chance you know…” he went on and on. At that point, I already told myself that I could handle it, recollecting my days in secondary school, playing the police lover-boy roles like you would find in some Indian movies. All I did was to call my wife and prepare her mind. As always, my wife said to me that she believe I am capable of handling anything. She agreed that I should give it a shot, oblivious of the session of kisses that the role required.

It was a shoot across the weekend, and the stress of repeated takes increased my boredom. Soon, this ‘play thing’ became tedious and I began to imagine how much the artistes were being paid and if I could endure doing a job like that. Of course, it was a typical Yoruba film production and only the lead actress received about 200 percent above what other actors were paid. I bet you, she is the highest paid in that industry. But you could tell that in all, the actors enjoy doing what they have chosen as a carrier.

But me, did I get paid for this unsolicited job? The answer is no! But to further safe the face of my friend, I won’t tell you how much was promised me as ‘fuel money’ and whether he has finished paying it till date…. Permit me to sound him out on this last line, and see if he wouldn’t be mad at me. This movie resumes shortly… if only you understand my language; watch out for part 2!

Patrick Doyle, Kiki Omili, others converge for KPIANS

PRODUCED and directed by Stanlee Ohikhuare, KPIANS is a complete horror flick, with a storyline revolving around a group of friends, each with an eerie secret that connects in the end. Tagged as ‘Nigerian horror’, the movie is a bold step in a relatively untapped area and described as one for a selected audience, lovers of horror and not for the majority.

Though yet to be released, the movie stars a cast that Stanlee says were able to adequately act out all his thoughts and ideas, the likes of; Prisca Iwuoha, Kiki Omili, Kelechi Udegbe, Uzor Osimkpa, Tubosun Oyedehin and Oyekunle Oluwaremi, Winner of Gulder Ultimate Search Season 7. An open screening of the movie was held on 30 September, 2013 at the indoor viewing hall of Mighty Jot Studios to give all present a firsthand view of the horror that is KPIANS before its official release date.

“It’s a thriller, it’s a horror movie. It was made to delve into areas that people think maybe are unnecessary or they don’t understand how people will react if it’s produced. Most times when people make movies it’s about getting the money back but for me making of movies is experimental, if you’ve done a certain type of movie before, the next production should mirror that and most importantly, if there are things that have not been done satisfactorily and you think you can get it done the way it should be done, then why not?”Mr. Ohikhuare stated, speaking on the movie and the idea behind its making.

Testing a new market as the director illustrated, the movie, KPIANS is set to be released in cinemas on or before the end of the year and he also advices fans of good horror movies to watch out for it.

  • Ebenezer Obey leads Glo’s evergreen jig

Ebenezer Obey leads Glo’s evergreen jig

MANY had expected that the Globacom sponsored ‘Evergreen Series’ would live by its nomenclature, but it turned out that the show was a fusion of different genres of songs treated with contemporary flavour. The strategy did work for the organizers as both old and young took to the dance floor. The concert paraded Juju maestro, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey who sang hit songs from his repertoire of music of yesteryear. Obey’s performances were supported at the event by Talented rapper, Jude Abaga, popularly called M.I and notable saxophonist, Yemi Sax. The setting of the show was regal, and so was the caliber of people at the show. Indeed, the performers did not disappoint the ‎guests, who showed excitement as the artistes took turns on the stage. First to mount the stage was Obey who set the ball rolling with obeisance, singing the song Iba lo ye kase. The Commander, has he is fondly called gave the audience the rare privilege of requesting for any of his favourite songs which he promptly rendered to their delight. Without betraying the slightest sign of old age, Obey took total control of the stage right from the first string of the guitar cord. Moved by the classic rendition, significant members of the audience could not hold the urge to dance.

As he rendered his timeless and enduring evergreen songs, it was all too evident, how he has been able to hold Nigeria and, indeed, the world spellbound with his music over the years.

Dreadlocked artiste, Yemi Sax, garbed in a white caftan was the next to thrill the audience with his dexterity on the saxophone. He reeled out tunes of the “old school” with the backing tracks by the D.J. to the delight of the audience. MI was at his vintage that night as he dished out hits of contemporary flavor. The concert audience, an admixture of different generations, brought together by their love for music, danced and sang along with Mr. Incredible, as the rapper is called, giving them the best of his stagecraft.

Highpoint of the event was the collaboration by Chief Obey and the two younger artistes, M.I. and Yemi Sax whom Obey described as his children.

‎They performed together to the immense admiration of the crowd. Obey led the way with two of his evergreen tracks Ore mi e se pelepele and Olomi gbo temi with M.I. emblazoning his signature into the two songs. Yemi Sax ‎also jazzed up the tunes with his saxophone. Obey Fabiyi who got a standing ovation after his performance, expressed appreciation to the organisers for featuring him as the first Nigerian artiste on the ‘Glo Evergreen Series’.

  • Mary J. Blige’s day on Nigerian stage

Mary J. Blige’s day on Nigerian stage

WITH N15, 000 being the minimum gate fee for the show, the crowd moderation intended by the organisers was achieved. But the entire space in the popular Expo Center, Eko Hotel and Suites appeared oversized for the elitist show, featuring American Queen of ‘Hip-hop soul’; Mary J. Blige who stormed Lagos last Friday for the Etisalat’s sponsored ‘Sisters with Soul’ concert.

The multiple-award winner and multi-platinum selling artiste took the audience back in time, dolling out her most loved songs from the 90s up until her most recent releases.

The show, which enjoyed the partnership of Kilimanjaro Entertainment, also paraded some of Nigeria’s top female artistes including Seyi Shay, Eva Alordiah, Niyola, Emma Nyra and Ms. Jaie, all performing their hit tracks to the excitement of the audience.

The craze for Nigerian music notwithstanding, the visiting artiste held the crowd spellbound, and just singing along with her at the prompt of every hit track, was an indication that Nigeria is one of the singer’s fan bases. She could not hold back her excitement, as she kept thanking the crowd for their love and support.

The 42 year-old singer and songwriter was clad in a mid-riff baring turtle neck top, leather shorts and knee-length gladiator heels, treating lovers of contemporary R&B, hip-hop and soul music to a great moment that Friday, September 27, 2013.

Etisalat had in December 2012 led the sponsorship of a similar show with Chris Brown tagged ‘Lagos on my Mind’.

After her two-hour performance, Mary J. Blige went on twitter, thanking her fans: “Good morning Lagos. Thank U so much 4 the warm welcome, love & support. I had a great time with U! Sorry I had to leave so quickly. Love. MJB”.
