OF all head accessories, the soft scarf definitely can make a big difference. It is one essential fashion item and comes in several beautiful colours.

It usually adds an explosion of colours, as well as an unexpected pattern that creates depth in your outlook. It is an inexpensive way to update your wardrobe and the best way to integrate your personality into what you wear. Paired with formal or informal outfits,  it will transform your look into something casually chic or glamorous.

When you add a scarf to a pair of trousers and blazer you get that exciting combination that cannot be ignored. Many fashion conscious celebs just cannot ignore them. But this may not be just because of fashion; the truth is that scarves are also easy to wear.

There are so many ways you can rock a scarf:

    • Rock it on your shoulders for an off-shoulder garb.
    • Knot a scarf around your neck and pin the knot with a brooch.
    • Do it the traditional way; Stylishly knot it on your head.
    • Wrap it round a hat.
    • Wrap and stylishly knot it around your wrist
    • Knot it by the side of a clutch purse or handbag

  • LILLIAN AFEGBAI: I was naive as Big Brother housemate

LILLIAN AFEGBAI: I was naive as Big Brother housemate

Lillian Afegbai is an actress, producer and ex Big Brother Africa housemate. In this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde, she opens up on her experience in the sector, inspiration, turning point as well as running a Lingerie business brand.

WHAT are you working on at the moment?

Right now, I am working on a lot of projects but considering the pandemic that is happening this year, there is a limit to what we can do. I am working on a couple of movies and some other projects which I am yet to unveil. But pretty soon, everything would come to limelight.

How has COVID-19 affected some of your plans?

Though the pandemic has really affected me in terms of the things that I wanted to do. I had my movie premier, private screening for my new film titled, “Double strings’ that was meant for release just before coronavirus started. Everything now is on hold because we couldn’t do all of those. And we obviously cannot do any of that anytime soon. So, we just have to find other ways, other means of releasing it. Also, I was working on a production that I had to hold which is gradually picking up now. Also, my business; my lingerie line was stocked but the sales have been a little slow for a bit, it is picking up now. So, yes, it affected my business and life. But yet, we have to realize that once there is life, there is hope. So, you can only be grateful.

Do you consider this a time to rest and take a break from work?

To be honest, I would say that we have had a lot of rest, enough. It was just a long break that wasn’t needed, First week, second week and then third week and more. So, I won’t consider this a time to rest because I have rested enough. Resting for months that I don’t appreciate at all. I am actually a workaholic, I like to work. I am happy when I work

Tell us about your experience as Big Brother Africa housemate?

My experience in Big Brother was awesome. That was 2014. That was a long time ago and so many things have happened since then. Then, I was naïve and I was young. I would say that at the time, it was worth it. At the end of the day, everything that you go through in life is a stepping stone to where you are headed.

So, that was a phase in my life that I really appreciated. It started my journey thus far and helped me to have the foundation required. It was amazing being in the house, but then also it had its ups and downs. You know, Nigerians have this issue routing for ladies. I am glad that is changing now with Big Brother Nigeria considering the fact that Mercy won this year. That was a major challenge that I had then.

How did participating in the show affect your career?

I participated in the show in 2014 but before I went to the Big Brother house, I had tendered my resignation letter to Lagos State Internal Revenue. So, when I came out, I knew I wasn’t going back to work. I was going to focus more on my acting, production and everything I had for this next phase in my life. I would say that it didn’t affect my career in anyway. Instead, it helped my career in many ways.

What inspires the things that you do?

To be honest, what inspires me is the drive, the drive to achieve my dreams. The drive to achieve my goals in life and to get to a certain point where, I could genuinely give back to people, without limit. This is because I feel like one of my purposes in life is to help people. And to give back to people in any way that I can. So, the fact that I have these goals that I want to achieve in life is my driving force. So, every day when I wake up, I just want to keep working. So, I keep working and becoming a better version of myself.

What are some of the other things that occupy your time?

I watch movies, I read and I try to go for courses when I can. Yes, basically those are some of the things that occupy my time. I also try to be a creative mind. Sometimes, I just travel to re-evaluate myself, go back to the drawing board and think about what next.

What are some of the challenges? Did you feel like quitting at any point?

To be honest, yes there were times that I felt like quitting. But this was because at some point, my career was stagnant and I felt like I wasn’t doing enough. People underestimated me, they just assumed things that they didn’t really know anything about. They just thought, she is a reality star and that is that. So, I had to work hard to prove myself in the industry. Also, when I came out of big brother’s house, I had depression; it was hard trying to make a name for myself with everything going on, with the backlash and all the internet throws. It was really hard, it was just hard trying to prove yourself to people who don’t really know who you are.

They just assumed a lot of things and you just have to keep trying, working twice as hard. There were a couple of times that I felt like quitting but I kept telling myself, you are not a quitter.

You can do whatever it is that you want to do. You can achieve whatever it is that you want to achieve, and so I just get back up, keep pushing and striving. And then I pray to God, at the end of the day, God is my major source of strength. I would say that, HE has really been there for me in my worst moments. HE has actually brought me out of everything I never thought, I could overcome. Of course, there were times, I thought of quitting but I just didn’t let that weigh me down.

Tell us about the people you admire in the sector?

To be honest, I admire a lot of people. So, it is hard for me to pick or call names because they are a lot. You don’t want to call names and end up calling everyone. At the end of the day, in the industry now, we have a lot of women doing so many huge things. Look at Mo Abudu, Omoni Oboli, Kate Henshaw, Genevieve, and Funke Akindele. All these people, you find that they keep trying and trying to do great things. So, I admire a lot of people in the industry, young, old and even my friends. These are the people that you see, they have been there, they have been consistent and even working hard to achieve their goals. And they are still going at it and are still achieving it.

What are some of the changes that you would like to see in the sector?

I would like to see actors more respected, actors paid well and I would also like to see the crew members, the people behind the camera celebrated more. This is because they put in so much work and feel that they are not celebrated as much as they should. I would also like the government to involve themselves more in the industry because it needs a lot of attention now. Look at the whole coronavirus situation and everyone was stuck on Netflix, movies and everything. I would say that entertainment is the next big thing in the world right now. The movie industry, entertainment, arts and everything. So, having the government invest more in everything in our industry would go a long way in terms of financial stability, revenues for producers and all that. And also quality which I think that we are already doing, people are already taking their time to produce nice movies. So, for as much as I would like to see changes, I would like to say that people are already impacting , they are already making this changes gradually and we can only hope for the best at the end of the day.

What is your definition of style?

My definition of style would be whatever you are comfortable with. At the end of the day, the truth is that if you wear something that you are not comfortable with, you lose it. Style is whatever you are comfortable with, but being classy, has a bit of everything, sexy but still comfortable. If you are not comfortable, that is not style. If you are wearing something and you cannot walk properly, then it isn’t it. So, style for me would be simplicity. Here you can be effortlessly simple and still look classy and killing it.

What are the things that you won’t do in the name of fashion?

The things I wouldn’t do in the name of fashion would be to outdo myself and be uncomfortable. I would not wear certain things because they are in trend or in vogue if I am not comfortable in them.

What would you consider as the turning point in your career?

What I would consider as the turning point in my career was when I won the AMVCA for my movie, my first movie production. For me, that just made me realize that people are always watching and so in life you just have to stand out. That just gave me a certain kind of motivation to just keep working harder. That motivated me to my next film and the next film. It just kept pushing me to just do it, it could work and then my lingerie line just happened. That was a huge motivation for me, which was a turning point in my career. That also made me realise that it is not how far, but how well.

Who or what do you consider as the greatest influence in your career?

First of all, it is my family. My mum is a huge influence on my career; Multi Choice, Africa Magic and DSTV all have added to my career in so many ways, that I cannot begin to mention to be honest. I keep telling people that they are a huge part of my success story. And they have added value to me in so many ways. Dr Chukwu Eluka, my friends and everyone has paid their price in influencing my career.

Tell us about your beauty regimen. What is the secret of looking good?

I am one person that realised that the minute I stop using a lot of things on my skin, I started having this glow, started bouncing. So, I do more of oils, I scrub my face and go the Spa at least twice a month. I do like my scrubs and do rub a lot of oils on my skin.

What items do you cherish the most in your wardrobe?

I cherish my clothes. I have to wear clothes, I love clothes.

    How do you relax?

I watch movies, I love to go to the beach and just clear my head. And I love to travel and relax.

  • Elevate your outlook

    Elevate your outlook

    Kehinde Oluleye

TO look good on the red carpet means to be the centre of attraction and unique. Here are some of the make-up tips you need, it will redefine your outlook and make you look your best!

    • Pick your foundation wisely: Choose a liquid foundation with silicone. Avoid luminous or matte ones; they actually make the skin appear either too moist or too flat to be natural.
    • Find your shade: To find a foundation that matches your complexion, test the colour on your neck. Your skin tone is more uniform there than it is on your face, so you will end up with a shade that is just right for you.
    • Apply sparingly: Dab on small size dots of foundation: two on your forehead, one each on the tip and along the sides of your nose, and the last on your chin. Using two fingers: Spread the colour over your forehead, down your nose, across your cheeks, over your chin, and along the sides of your face. Always blend down or sideways. A foundation that is creamy and moisturising will not settle into fine lines and wrinkles, so use it sparingly. The more you add, the more pronounced the lines will look.
    • Diffuse with a sponge: Dab a clean, damp make-up sponge around the nose, over wrinkles, and anywhere your base is noticeable to remove excess that could crease or emphasise lines.
    • Hide imperfections: With a fine-tipped brush, dab a solid concealer over blemishes or dark spots that are still visible.
    • Get rid of redness with a yellow-based foundation and smooth it over any discolouration with your fingers, and then blur the edges with a damp make-up sponge.
  • Get that animal instinct

    Get that animal instinct

    By Kehinde Oluleye

Beautiful and stylish animal prints are in vogue. They are all over this season and simply add that subtle and sexy appeal to one’s look.

Ladies are also sporting animal print fashion accessories these days. Animal print (cheetah, leopard, cow, etc) goes in and out of fashion but it is always a staple for those who want to add a hint of glamour to their outfit.

Here are a few tips for wearing this item.

    • The key to wearing leopard print accessories is to only have one or two items at once.
    • For a more subtle approach, animal print belt, scarf, or bangle might do the trick.
    • A bolder fashionista might try an animal print jumpsuit like Bukola Adeeyo did in the picture.
    • Alternatively, you can have a cream coloured top with animal pants, just like what Uche Ogbodo is wearing.

Animal print is bold but can sometimes go wrong.

So, do not make it all-round animal print accessories.

It is also important to go for designs that complement your frame.

  • BLESSING AZOME: Modelling can be lonely if you’re not connected

BLESSING AZOME: Modelling can be lonely if you’re not connected

Blessing Azome is a Nigerian model currently making waves in Ghana. She is also skilled in salsa dancing and bead making. In an interesting conversation with MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN, the leggy model spoke candidly about her foray onto the runway and so much more.

How did you get into modelling and what was the motivation for you instead of going into something else?

Growing up in Port-Harcourt, people always told me that I look like a model. I have always been skinny, tall and leggy, but I never knew what modelling was until  I saw Naomi Campbell on the Runway and  my life changed. At that moment, I   knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I came from a family of tall people but my father was against my choice. He believed in education and insisted that I have to go to school, graduate and earn a decent living. He was the only one that was not  cool with the idea. I am not sure any other thing will be as fulfilling as this. When I am on the runway, I feel alive, when the clothes sell out, I am at my happiest.

What were the challenges at the beginning and how were you able to overcome it?

My major challenge when I started was fear, because I had no one who encouraged me to try out auditions. I was on my own, bugged down with the fear of under-performance: how will they see me, where would I  start from? My first public audition was Mercedes-Benz fashion week in Ghana. It is one of the most distinguished in the country, and you are no model if you are not yet on it. I put my fear aside; I had missed a lot of castings in Nigeria and Ghana then for being afraid. So, I said to myself, ‘look if you really want to be a top model, you have to be confident’ and what is modelling if not confidence and boldness? I went ahead and auditioned.  I met a lot of people, I was given a name tag , when it got to my turn, I became nervous, I panicked  but the guy in charge of directing the models asked me to relax and do my best. I did my pose which was wrong and off.

Unfortunately, I had no formal training, I could hear them laughing and got a maybe after the audition.  I went home feeling sad but glad I auditioned; I never expected a call back. When they called to inform me I made it, that was one of the happiest days of my life. And since then, it has been no more fear,. I am yet to get to the top but I am confident now.

Tell us about some best moments in your modeling career?

My best moment I will say, happened just recently, in March when I went for the Winneba Fashion Week here in Ghana. Though I thought no one appreciated me for being a model. I was honoured in Winneba rather than in Accra where I have done my best jobs! I also won the best female Model last year and I wasn’t at the show, I couldn’t make it though I was invited. All my best moments happened in a day; I know it sounds unbelievable but that’s the truth. Immediately I got there, people noticed me as the girl with the strong walk, which I always want people to know me for. Designers wanted me to walk for them too, and at the end of the show people actually came back stage to tell me they enjoyed the show because of me, I was told my walk was amazing and they couldn’t stop admiring me.

To me that was everything I ever worked hard for, if it were to be in Europe or America I would have gotten a big contract after that.

Have you had any experience that makes you want to quit modelling?

Yes; I have had experiences that make me wish to stop modelling. And that is because  I am too skinny. People feel I do not eat food, I am anorexic, I have met scouts that advised me to be on pills to gain weight, and it is not a skinny world after all. At a point, I actually quit modelling for some time but later I had to start modelling because I wasn’t happy. I have also been to castings where I was informed to my embarrassment that they won’t get me a dress to wear, because I  am too slim, the designer has no cloth for me,  Wherever I hear that, it totally breaks my spirit, and for days i will be depressed and moody. But when I accepted myself for who I am, I stopped caring about what people say and I have been doing great.

Who are your mentors and role models in modelling?

Modelling in West Africa could be lonely and solo when you are not connected. So, I have never been opportune to work with people I can look up to; it is almost an “you are on your own” cold place.

I learnt almost everything I know on YouTube watching Naomi Campbell and other super models. So, my role model is Naomi Campbell because she inspires me a lot, her walk is amazing just like mine. She’s straight forward and tells you things to your face. That’s better than backstabbing.

What was the best show or competition you have participated in?

Glitz Fashion Show in Accra was my best show so far because it brings a lot of designers and models together from all parts of the world, you get to meet people, make new friends. Whereby when they see you for the second time they will definitely remember you and that’s a plus. Glitz Fashion Show brings people together and that’s the best thing about modelling, you get to learn and meet different people from different country.

How would you compare your modelling experience in Nigeria with that of Ghana?

When it comes to modelling, Nigeria is better than Ghana; models are well respected and organised in Nigeria and they are paid well. The only difference is that the competition in Nigeria is way too high compared to Ghana. I still wish to walk on major runways in Nigeria and I’m seriously planning towards that…so, there’s a model for hiring.

What makes a good model and what are your beauty regimens?

What makes a good model is to know what modelling career you want to pursue and work on yourself to be the best, before going for modelling as a career. There are different types of models, unfortunately, some models do not know what suits them. So, it is important to know where you fit in best, brand yourself and work hard to be the best.

My beauty regimen? I exercise, not a fitness freak because I am already too skinny anyway

I wash my face at least twice a day and never ever sleep with makeup,  no matter how tired  I am. I am also into moisturisers for the dark skin girl, in the future I might roll out my brand of skin care range.

How do you keep fit and what kind of food do you eat?

Actually, I eat everything but I make sure to exercise sometimes when I have the chance to. I try not to eat late night food because it makes you develop belly fat.

Besides modelling, what other things do you do?

Besides modelling, i dance Salsa and  Kimzomba and  I am a bar tender.

What will you not be caught wearing as a model?

Nothing. Is that not what modelling is all about? And I have the body for it.

What advice will you give to aspiring models?

Start early, be yourself and don’t try to be like anyone because you can only be you. I will also tell them to work hard to build  their brand, don’t wait for anyone and never give up.

    What is your life philosophy?

Do unto others, what you want them to do unto you.

How well have you coped under COVID-19 and what have you learnt about life as a result of this pandemic?

It has not been easy, everyone has been affected by it but what I have learnt is that we never know when we will die. So, use your time well and do the best you can, help others if you can. No need for hate.

What can make you cry, angry and laugh?

Whenever i am being told to gain some weight.

What other personal details will you like to share with readers?

I love to train models on how to catwalk.  I train them personally and I also have a YouTube channel for that.  It’s iconblessingazome on YouTube, kindly search and subscribe.
