  • The Stella’s Sassy Muse Legacy: Every Piece Matters

The Stella’s Sassy Muse Legacy: Every Piece Matters

Welcome to the ever-evolving fashion world, where African designs are leading the charge in slow and sustainable practices, turning the global spotlight towards a new era of conscious luxury. Here, the fusion of tradition and innovation transforms how we see style and its impact on the planet. For designers like Stella Chidimma Osuju of Sassy Muse, slow fashion isn’t just a concept — it’s a way of life, a return to the artistry and care that once defined the craft of clothing.

While slow fashion has recently made waves in the industry, it’s rooted in a philosophy that’s been around since ancient times when artisans hand-spun every fibre, and weaved garments with care, skill, and deep respect for the materials they used.

Stella embodies this same prevailing motivation with her designs, creating each piece with a meticulous touch that honours her African heritage while appealing to a global audience. Her commitment to quality over quantity isn’t just a nod to the past; it’s a bold statement for the future.

Established in 2019 by the artistic Stella Chidimma Osuju, Sassy Muse began as a bold experiment, testing the waters of the fashion industry. Her collection exceeded all expectations, transforming a small vision into a burgeoning brand with aspirations for continuous growth. Sassy Muse stands on a groundbreaking concept of crafting African-inspired clothing for women of all races.

Stella’s creations for Sassy Muse aren’t just garments; they celebrate African culture, confirming what fashion can be when driven by intention and respect for both the craft and the environment. She seamlessly infuses long-lasting prints with high fashion, proving that style, ethics, and innovation can —and should — coexist.

Evident in her first collection in 2022, Stella challenges what it means to be a conscious creator in the modern fashion landscape. With every piece, her designs establish a profound impact that transcends trends.

Sassy Muse embodies the principles of slow fashion, where each creation tells a story of meticulous craftsmanship and timeless elegance, with adequate details on durability, originality, fittings, fabric tone and print, embellishments and accessories, and comfortability.

Stella’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond surface-level trends; it’s woven into every fibre of her brand. By prioritising quality and uniqueness over mass production, she ensures that every piece, aside from being handcrafted from start to finish, has a distinct design creation and execution.

Taking a closer look at the classic two-piece suit, vibrant trousers, and matching blouses, each of these designs is made from cool Dutch wax. The prints on these textiles hint at the quality of the fabric used ― making an accurate guess on expensive Ankara cloths like the legendary hi-targets or the double-sided textiles.

The brand’s dedication to resource efficiency means that every fabric scrap is thoughtfully repurposed, reinforcing the ethos of responsible fashion. In this light, Stella innovatively converts excess pieces into flattering collars for the tops and flares on the trousers. Should we also discuss the two-in-one suit with a complementing blazer and shawl collar?

This masterpiece is a living work of creativity.

With a little more focus on the colour and combination, these ensembles reflect her expressiveness and inclusion. Perfect for winter, these outfits would definitely turn heads at formal or casual events. Alternatively, a woman who is heat intolerant might have to be in a room with a cooling degree of 16 – 24 Celsius to keep her composure in the spotlight for as long as she wants.

Because African fashion, over the last decade has often been perceived through a narrow lens viewed as exclusive to Black people and bound by traditional aesthetics. Sassy Muse seeks to shatter this misconception by proving that lively colours and detailed patterns of African fabrics can harmoniously blend with global design elements.

Our undivided interest is in the flower print suit. This particular design is proof that Stella’s vision extends beyond mere aesthetics by celebrating diversity and fostering inclusivity. This cultural fusion broadens perspectives, introducing fresh possibilities that transcend geographical and cultural boundaries. A deviation from the standard jacket collar, this one-breasted notch jacket is a revolution of the Renaissance jerkins. As if this is not enough, Stella also makes a deliberate yet stylish effort to educate her audience on the difference between a jacket and a blazer. Some fashionmongers often confuse these two pieces of clothing. As a reaction to this misinformation, the designer decides to the extra mile of cladding its model in a well-cut jacket and an additional blazer ― for emphasis, of course.

A tailor-made design for the elegant woman, nothing gladdens our hearts more than seeing a piece of clothing that reveals some exclusively necessary body parts. While the neck gives room for an intentional display of dangling chains, the length of this dress is a careful attempt to showcase enough dose of melanin skin. However, to address the issue of discomfort in wearing petit dresses, a pair of black cotton pop socks would be a perfect combination.

The dream is to see women of all colours and cultures adorned in designs that reflect the vigorousness of African heritage and the elegance of modern style. To this effect, Stella Chidinma Osuji effortlessly includes “taste” in her categorisation of styles. Let us consider the sleeves. The long and straight-fitting sleeves are distinct from the short and puffy ones.

A response to the shapeless silhouettes worn by men in the 1930s, these elastic sleeves symbolise power, pride and authority. Since the Renaissance, puff sleeves have gone through several fashion evolutions until 2018, with a promise to never go out of trend. With sleeves like this, the stylish woman learns to keep it classic and loud.

Contrastively, the long or fitting sleeves allow for more flexibility around the arm region. Sewn very close to the skin, these fabric sheathings are a recent fashion trend that accommodates complementing or extra clothing. We do not want to imagine Sassy Muse’s model in a puffy-sleeved jacket and a fitting blazer. That would have been a fashion blunder.

While the brand’s language is well articulated in the model’s bold looks, the choice of colour seems to be a contrast. African prints are famous for their vibrant hues and exciting prints. These fabrics’ shades are not just for aesthetic purposes but an expression of emotions, status and beliefs. Hence, a softer look would have made a more convincing statement. Moreover, the model’s makeover appears to exaggerate the energetic prints on the textile.

What is a Stella Muse collection without matching accessories like the silver and black square stilettos the model is wearing? For all three outfits, any choice of stiletto or open-toed block heels would make an excellent substitute. But for the long jacket, especially, a pair of black or white knee-length boots would give those elegant legs a lasting effect.

In a world increasingly driven by fast fashion, Sassy Muse is a reminder that true luxury lies in thoughtfulness, craftsmanship, and an unwavering dedication to the heart of fashion.

All thanks to sustainable and slow fashion, for taking enthusiasts on a journey of a more personal relationship with their clothing demeanour.

  • Style forecast for 2020

     Kehinde Oluleye

WHILE we appreciated the wild and crazy fashion trends of 2019, 2020 is to expect the unexpected! Classiness and style are the words that describe the dazzling range of fashion merchandise that rocked last year! And keeping in tune with the changing styles and fads has been the essential features. The start of a New Year does not mean that the New Year fashion and trend will be all completely new.

Although, there will be those distinctly new elements and those distinctly new themes, a lot of the clothing and accessories we will be wearing in the first few month of 2020 will be influenced by the coolest fashion trends recently spotted at the various fashion weeks of 2019. It’s time to get inspired by the best street style from classic pieces with an updated twist to fresh tailoring!

2020 is certain to be an eventful year fashion-wise. First, we should expect designers to be more daring in 2020. This new spirit is going to be driven by the rise in the demand for trendy off-the-rack and bespoke fashion accessories.

Going forward, we expect to see Bermuda skirts, shorts, trousers and jackets come in single bold and bright hues or be mixed up with softer shades;  a serious infusion of African prints and flurry fabric

For 2020, the options of what to keep are manly: you simply need to know how to give those key trend pieces from last year a 2020 refresh.

Top trends that are coming your way in 2020!

Puffy sleeves-Voluminous and dramatic sleeves will reign on and off the runways. Wear blouse/top with roomy sleeves with jeans for something classy or pair with a skirt for office runs.

Buttercup yellow, banana yellow, pink, red, navy blue, onion etc-There are so many hues to stock up on in 2020 – they are shade of colours one doesn’t want to miss and they are hues that will brighten up any day.

*Nude (Two coloured dresses) – Pastels had a big moment on and off the run way!

*Denim Skirt (midi and maxi skirt) – Maxi skirt – If you are looking for a work-appropriate skirt, go for a maxi skirt. Rock it with a tucked in blouse or even your plain white tee.

*Mesh, chord and lace fabric dresses gained more popularity both on the runway and off the stage. So, they are going to be more visible in 2020.

*Handbags will certainly get bigger and clutch purses will get trendier and lsmaller in width.

  • Aayisa Egbulem: I love crazy but stylish outfits

Aayisa Peers Egbulem is the Director of Houz of Jazz and the Creative Director of Jazz Fingerz situated in Port Harcourt. The native of Okrika in Rivers State and graduate of the University of Port Harcourt talks about her strong passion for fashion and how it has motivated her to work along this line, in this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde.

What inspired you to go fashion designing?

I love abstract creativity and I would say that this actually motivated me to go into fashion designing. It has been a very interesting journey for me.

In 2016, I won a special award and I was given the recognition as Port Harcourt most stylish woman.

I was and still am a philanthropist, fashion consultant, personal shopper and a counsellor before going into fashion designing.

Happily, I have combined my career and family life successfully and, today, I am married and blessed with three children.

Going down memory lane, I must say that what inspired me was my love for fashion, style and good clothes. I had always wanted to design my own clothes. I believe everyone has got a style and that actually defines their personality, irrespective of their shapes and sizes. I officially started my clothing line two years ago.

What are some of the challenges and how did you overcome these challenges?

The challenges I have had so far is trying to balance the home front, my social life with my business. I practically don’t have time to attend some of the events that I would love to be part of. This is because of my tight schedule. I must say that my job always occupies a lot of my time.

What makes your designs different from others?

I love dramatic clothes, designs that catch the attention of everyone even from afar. Permit me to say crazy cloths, yet stylish but different. That’s what makes my designs different.

What is your take on the Nigerian fashion industry?

Things are getting very interesting and the sector is developing and growing in different ways. The fashion industry in Nigeria has gone beyond “tailoring”, it’s a world class standard with a lot of innovation. Every fashion designer in Nigeria is creative; the competition is stiff and I think that is a plus. That naturally makes the designers give in their best at every point in time.

What lessons has being in the sector taught you?

You are strictly on your own; that is one important lesson that I learnt over the years. On the other hand, if you succeed, you become the toast of the town. It is kudos for a job well down. If you fail, however, then it’s over and you go back to zero. I have also come to the realisation that everyone is only interested in themselves; nobody is ready to assist or even disclose where they get their fabrics or threads from.

Where do you hope to be in the next few years?

There are so many opportunities in the sector and I hope to tap into such opportunities, leave a legacy as well as help to give young designers direction for business growth and development.  One of the things that I am looking forward to is to participate in the New York Fashion Week regularly, showcasing my designs and representing Nigeria.

What are some of the changes that you would like to see in the industry?

I will really love it if we start seeing ourselves as colleagues rather than just competitors. Of course, competition is good but it should be healthy and relevant to the development of everyone. I strongly think that we shouldn’t despise or look down on upcoming designers, they are the future for the sector and they need our support and encouragement.  I usually advise that because you were there before them doesn’t mean they should be treated with disdain.

I also believe that just because you made a design first doesn’t mean others don’t have the same inspiration. Five or 10 people can have the same inspiration; because you did it first doesn’t mean others shouldn’t try it or even make it better than the original idea.

What do you consider as the best part of being a designer? This is actually the best part of my life. I must say that being a designer is interesting and exciting. It brings out the best in me and I get the opportunity to try out new things, create new designs, innovate, improve on myself. Most importantly, I must stress that seeing someone wearing what I have designed for them remains the most exciting and memorable part of it all.

What makes your designs distinct and what materials do you like to work with?

I work with every kind of fabric, it depends on the design and style we are creating for the client. The personality, choice of design and concept all help to determine the outlook for me. Creativity is the greatest tool, and inspiration comes in different ways. I always want my clients to feel comfortable, sophisticated, classy and confident whenever they are wearing our apparels.

Tell us about the designers that have been the greatest influence on you

A whole lot. But I’ll say Betsy Johnson and Gwen Stefani have my sense of style. I admire their brands and what they stand for in the sector.

What are the fashion must-haves that one can find in your wardrobe?

I love jumpsuits, bodysuits, LBD, pumps and beautiful sunglasses.

I like outfits that are dramatic, yet classy, in one word “DIFFERENT”.

Where do you hope to be in your business in the next few years?

I want to be known all over the world with people wearing our brand in every state around the world.

If you want to advise young people who want to go into the sector, what would you tell them?

Believe in yourself, keep your dreams alive, start it with what is available at hand, no matter how little. Once you are focused, dedicated and innovative, your brand would keep evolving.
