  • Wide-leg pants:Season’s coolest trend

    Wide-leg pants:Season’s coolest trend

THE popular choice with the fashionistas and celebs these days is trendy high-waisted wide-legged pants style with a smart top.

They are very much in trend this season and its resurgence has been widespread. Even better news: they are pretty much flattering on everyone.

They are comfortable and fun to wear. Whether  rock with heels or flats, you just can’t go wrong with it.

    Styling tricks

*A pair of wide-leg pants with a high waist in and dark colour is flattering on almost anyone. If you lack height, it is better you choose a more discreet flare in the legs rather than big, billowy legs. The flare at the bottom of the wide-leg pants can help to balance out your shape.

*The wide-leg pants can be elegant on ladies, if they are worn on the body hug top with a dramatic flare in the leg; it keeps the top glossy and simple. Try not making it look too busy by putting on a billowy top on it, especially if you are on the short side.

*When putting on wide-leg pants, try wearing heels as they tend to visually cut leg heights. Choose slightly chunky shoes with a two to three inch heels rather than flats, if you want to step out in style. The shoes with pointed and long toes are flattering when worn with wide leg pants. If you are 5’4″ in height, I recommend you wear wide-leg pants that are without cuffs.

*When wearing wide-leg pants, try using a belt on the waist; it brings out a good shape.

Ladies, I believe the best way to determine what style of wide-leg pants you will look best in is to visit boutiques and try on various flares and I am sure you will find the one that the width is most flattering on you.

  • 7 Tips for Cleaning Your Closet Ahead of the Rains

7 Tips for Cleaning Your Closet Ahead of the Rains

A new season is upon us, and we’re overjoyed to be exchanging our hot weather clothing for cooler ones. Thus, it’s the perfect time to organize your wardrobe, which can be harder than it sounds. To ensure success, first consider your goals: streamlining, storing hot weather items and incorporating a system to keep your rainy season wardrobe neat and accessible. Here, seven key steps guaranteed to make the whole process easier and more bearable.

    Invest in good hangers

Before you start, buy good-quality hangers that are thin but durable, such as durable plastic, wood, or huggable velvet options. These will instantly increase the amount of space in your closet and ensure your clothes stay in good condition and ensure no tugging or stretching of fabric takes place. It’s a worthwhile investment. Make sure to use the same type for all your clothes.

    Cleanse the wardrobe

Detox your wardrobe by gathering everything you haven’t worn in the past six months or that you just don’t love anymore, then using the three-pile rule: toss, sell or donate. Discard shabby garments that are no longer wearable, sell pieces that are still fashionable and in good condition at  certain shops or online, and donate those that are no longer on-trend or of monetary value.

    Prioritize your pieces

Now it’s time to start adapting your closet for the new season. Move your hot weather stuff along with your latest purchases for the rainy season toward the front as you transfer  non weather friendly items  to the back. Also keep transitional items like lightweight stuff and tees at the front so they’re easily accessible.

    Choose a system

From there, pick an effective arrangement that works for you, whether that means coordinating everything by color or garment type. To downsize and create more space, fold sweaters, roll tees and stack denim. Everything else? Hang it.

    Get creative with storage

Accessories can take up a lot of room. Think of new ways to organize and store your shoes, bags, scarves and hats so they’re not just left untidily , keep them in dust bags or containers with labels or photos so you can quickly identify and grab what you want.

    Clean up

With all those items, closets and drawers are bound to get dirty and dusty. Wipe down every surface, scatter mothballs on the floor and wardrobes, and make sure to disinfect!

  • Show off your tiny Waistline with these Tips

Show off your tiny Waistline with these Tips

Every woman wants an hour glass figure, unfortunately, not all of us are naturally endowed with tiny waistlines, neither are we all enamoured of hitting the gym for some serious core work. But what if you could create the perfect waistline without all that effort? Here, what to wear for a smaller-looking waist.

A Sheath Dress with Paneled Sides

First seen on bathing suits, this fashion trick draws the eye in to your middle and makes your torso appear much smaller by creating the hourglass shape for you. The magic of design.

    flatter_waist_jeans

    Anything High-Waisted

The ultimate waist-cincher, high-rise bottoms smooth and shape in all the right places. Find yourself a pair of pants or a skirt that hits right above your belly button to draw the eye to the smallest part of your torso.

    flatter_waist_stripes

    Vertical Stripes

You’ve probably heard that horizontal stripes can make you appear wider, and the opposite logic applies to vertical ones. The elongating design on a blouse or cotton tee is both slimming and fashion-forward.

    flatter_waist_wrap

    A Wrap Dress

Diane Von Furstenberg popularized the look in the 1970s with her curve-hugging jersey dresses, which quickly became a cult classic. Today’s styles vary greatly in material and aesthetic, but no matter the designer, a flattering V-neck and waist-minimizing fabric tie work wonders for every female form.

    flatter_waist_culottes

    Wide-Leg Pants

The wider silhouette down below does wonders by creating contrast between your waistline and the bell-shaped pant legs. Look for a pair of culottes or trousers with some serious legroom and a high-rise closure to define your torso at its narrowest point.

    flatter_waist_peplum

    Anything Peplum

This classic 1940s silhouette has stuck around for decades, and for good reason. The figure-hugging waist seam followed by a flare of fabric is a no-brainer in the curves department.

    flatter_waist_trench

    A Belted Jacket

What better way to shrink the appearance of your abdomen than to tie up your coat right at your middle? Aim for a style that, when closed, hits right at your waist.

    flatter_waist_belt

    Or Just a Belt

The absolute easiest way to achieve hourglass perfection? A belt secured around your middle is a visual anchor, drawing the viewer in to your defined midsection. Go for a medium-sized, Western-inspired one with your favorite denim and tucked blouse to stay on-trend without looking like a pre1996 high schooler.

  • 9 Interesting ways to rock a Suit

Suits are a work wear staple in the wardrobes of most professional women, either because it’s a required part of your office dress code, or you simply love how you look in one. It can however get boring. Here are nine ways you can put a new spin on your suit game, simply by playing with color, silhouettes and accessories.

Consider other colours aside Black and Navy

Even though you don’t have to wear the rainbow, but adding more colour to your work wardrobe rather than the usual neutral palette is a great way to go. Rich colors like burgundy or olive green is refreshing without being too crazy.

    Wear a Printed Shirt Underneath

If you’re wearing this in a work environment, make sure the neck is cut a bit higher or cover up with a brooch. But the general idea is that layering a blazer over a printed blouse makes an otherwise plain gray suit much more fashionable, and modern.

    Consider a Looser Silhouette

There’s a time and place for fitted pencil skirts, but how can you say no to an equally delicious wide-leg pant? To avoid entering “kid wearing her dad’s clothes” territory, make sure that, even if roomier, your suits are always tailored to your body , especially the shoulders and the waist.

Dress It Down with a T-Shirt and Sneakers

If silk blouses and heels aren’t really your thing or  you need to travel for work, pair your suit with casual basics like a plain white tee and simple sneakers for some airport chic. There’s something so effortless about this look that makes the whole concept far more approachable.

    suit pix 3

    Don Loafers

This is kind of the women’s look of our dreams. Instead of fighting the masculine connotations of a suit with feminine shoes, embrace the menswear trend and pair it with a cool pair of loafers. The bare sliver of ankle is the icing on the cake.

    suit 4

    Or Rock Something Striped Underneath

If you’re like most ladies you already wear striped shirts regularly, so why not wear one under a crisp suit? The resulting look is slightly more casual and really cool.

    suit 5

    Mix Feminine and Masculine

This look is proof that you don’t need crazy colors or dramatic details to make a classic suit look perfectly modern. The contrast between the androgynous buttoned-to-the-top shirt and the undeniably feminine pointy-toe pumps is really interesting, and the cross body bag makes it even more so.

    pix 6

Wear It With a Skinny Scarf

A super-simple way to jazz up a plain black suit is to wrap a trendy skinny scarf around your neck. Think of this as a more feminine (and chic) version of a guy’s tie.

    suit 7

    Or Try Rocking a Bandanna

This might not work at a more strict work environment, but a bandanna is an even more fashion-forward alternative to a skinny scarf, especially in cold weather. Best of all, you can get one for, a few hundred naira.

  • 4 Ways to style fine hair

Every woman would like to have an abundant head of hair, which is the exact opposite of fine hair.  Fine hair, as we put it in these parts, is rather scanty. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a love/hate relationship with my hair. It’s fine and unruly by nature, so it took me years to find a style that works for me. And in the spirit of working with what you got, here are four ways to style fine hair – no special tools required!

    Pulled back minibun

    pulled back minibun

The mini bun is one of my personal go-to hair styles for ladies with heart shaped faces. Trendy ladies who like a fuss free style should simply keep their middle part when creating the bun, especially if you have a very narrow-shaped face. This pulled back version gives a more slick effect. It’s such a versatile hair style: when paired with a white tank top and khaki bomber it’s got an unquestionable street wear/ casual vibe going on, but when you add a chic dress and oversized earrings, it’s so very sophisticated!

    The classic middle part

    index classic middle part

A sleek middle part is another classy hairstyle option.  It looks fresh and natural, especially when tucked behind your ears.  It’s definitely something to be trying this rainy season. Even if you are carrying super wavy hair, you can still get away with a sleek middle part.

    Short and combed back

index short and combed back hair

Considering the multitude of wet look-inspired beauties you are likely to come across when the rain arrive the popularity of this short combed back hair style is not so surprising. It might seem a bit daunting to try this out at home, but the casual version of is pretty do-able. You might want to try this combo with a sexy blazer jacket and red lips.

    Low ponytail

    index low ponytail

A low ponytail is an adult spin on the classic ponytail, only this time it lies lower down the back of your head. Simply pull your hair back at the back of your head with an elastic hair band or hair ornament and you are good to go. It can go from the gym to the boardroom just as easily as it can be rocked at home.

  • CHERRIE EKANEM: Modelling is awesome

    CHERRIE EKANEM: Modelling is awesome

Cherrie Ekanem is a model and professional make-up artiste. Her passion is making others look good as well as develop their potential. In this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde, she talks about her passion, dreams and the other things that make her tick.

LOOKING beautiful with a face that is very attractive, height of a model and charm like a princess, the first thing you want to know as soon as you see Cherrie Ekanem is if she is a beauty queen. No, she replies with a smile that is infectious. She adds: “I have never contested for any pageant. Of course, I got a number of requests to be Miss this and that, but I just kept turning down those offers.”

Reason: “I just didn’t like the limelight. I love my privacy and going into the world of pageants would take that away from me.”

While she was running away from being a queen, she discovered her passion for modelling. “That was very interesting and it opened other doors for me. I got into projects with Sly Monay and did something interesting for the fashion scene. The experience was simply awesome.”

Apart from modelling, Ekanem also loves making other people beautiful and this passion took her into professional make-up.

“I have an outfit called Blush beauty Makeovers and I get inspired with the things happening around me. It is something that I am very passionate about. It gives me joy making other women beautiful. Looking good is important because it gives you confidence and you also become a source of inspiration to others.”

So, how did Ekanem get into the make-up business? you ask. “It actually started in school. Then I was at the Obafemi Awolowo University where I studied English Language. It wasn’t as if I did not have a choice to do something else, I just love the course and I had a very interesting experience in school.”

Looking good, Ekanem stressed, “is good business and something that helps young people to discover their hidden talents. Everybody is beautiful. Even though the sector is highly competitive, you would stand out once you are focused.”

Banke Meshida Lawal and Tara Durotoye both are leading names in the sector and they actually motivated Ekanem’s desire to make a name in a profession that strives to bring out the best in their clients. Nostalgically, she goes down memory lane to tell you how she learnt the ropes from the House of Tara.

“Too much make-up or lack of professional touch also poses a big challenge. According to what I was taught in the make-up school, usually these problems could have started from the shade of foundation that the person used. Most times, you find the person using the wrong shade of her colour. And applying this on the face this way usually turns out to be ugly. Interestingly, you also have those who actually apply their shade but it all depends on how you blend it. If it does not blend well, it would look caky.”

Ekanem continues: “I had known about make-up while I was in school. So, going to House of Tara was more like an advanced knowledge. There I learnt how to blend make-up and more.” She goes on to talk about her encounter with Tara Durotoye and how she got inspiration from her. “Tara is a wonderful person. She is very simple and I like her for being who she is. She is a good mentor. The day I met her, my instructor was doing make up and they were communicating easily. Ordinarily, you won’t have known that was Tara. She is a down-to-earth person, very simple and nice.”

Now you want to know if she has participated in any beauty pageant and she snatches the question from your mouth with a capital no. Shy? Not exactly. “It was because I wasn’t interested in pageants.”

Wondering where she got the good looks from and she answers this way: “My grandma. Actually she is my maternal grandma. I met her once before she died, that was over 12 years ago and I was very young then. I met her in the village in Akwa Ibom. My mother used to work in GTB, she was a banker.”

Scroll down memory lane, you ask her to talk about her Isreali father.  “I don’t want to talk about my dad. He abandoned me,” she explodes. Tell her that her outlook depicts someone who has had a smooth journey and Ekanem bursts into laughter. When she finally finds her voice, the damsel replies this way: “Do not judge a book by its cover. First, I would start with my dad. Sometimes, when I think of his problems with my mum, I always ask myself if I really want to go into marriage.”

Tell her that no two relationships are the same, she may just be lucky. Her mood and gesticulations change almost immediately and she tells you that she has found love after all. “Well, I think that I have found a real man and he has been a great source of joy to me,” she says with a girlish grin on her face.

Dreaming big? Yes, she is and this takes her to where she hopes to take her outfit in the next five years. “My dream is to have a big studio and help others achieve their dream. It is important for young people to discover their talents early.”

Finally, you ask her to advise young ladies and she says: “It is important to do what makes you happy. I am happy doing the things I do and I am so fulfilled. I do not intend to take up paid employment. I believe that young people should aspire to be who they want to be. Being an entrepreneur is good. You would be able to explore your world, be creative, as well as inspire other people.”

  • Dress this way to look professional

Dress this way to look professional

The office is where you spend more than half your time, especially during the work week, and dressing the part is of utmost importance. Unfortunately not all of us seem to have gotten the hang of the right way to dress for work. Every industry has a dress code of its own, from the business formal to the business casual code, but its always best to dress to impress, as you can never tell if your next boss is looking out for you.

Major tip: the best way to decode your office dress code is look at your boss to master the art of office work wear.

Dressing down is a no no

In certain industries like law and the financial sector, dressing down is a crime against humanity. If you happen to work in such industries, you owe it to yourself to dress with fearless flamboyance. As someone once put it, “it’s a form of good manners.”

    Ditch immobilizing shoes

One of the biggest style errors many make on the sales floor is wearing shoes they can’t walk in. You are paid to work, put on shoes that will ease mobility and enable you do your job. The other style errors are too much makeup, too much cleavage, too-short skirts/showing too much leg. It just doesn’t work on the sales floor.

    Ripped denim

No matter your industry, ripped denim is a professional no no. Save yours for the weekend.

Wearing head to toe designer stuff

It never makes sense to show up on your first day at work or at or an interview dressed in head-to-toe designer duds. You want your work and ability to be the focus, not the fact that your outfit costs more than a small car.

No hems undone, no soiled collars or cuffs, and your shoes must be well heeled and polished.

The key to looking professional is not about spending a fortune on clothes but looking well groomed, clean and appropriate to your vocation. Your professional wardrobe should always be well maintained. For example, your clothing should be cleaned and pressed, no undone hems, no soiled collars or cuffs, and your shoes must be well heeled and polished.

    Ditch your trouser suit

Except you are interviewing for a bank job, you might want to ditch your trouser suit. Instead know the industry you are interviewing for, and tailor your look accordingly. You want to dress relevant and develop your own sense of style. You don’t want to look like a victim, but you do want to appear like you actually follow fashion trends.

  • Things stylish women never do

    Things stylish women never do

Every woman has her morning routine, the things you do from the time you get out of bed in the morning, until you head out the door to work. From taking a bath, tohitting the gym; meditating, or having a cup of tea, we all have our peculiar routine when it comes to starting a new day. But, one thing we all have no choice but get dressed for whatever lies ahead. With our constant daily to-do lists, it’s not unusual to spend an entire day running from responsibility to responsibility, which is why this year afunctional wardrobe is a must.

When it comes to the dos and don’ts of getting dressed, the most inspiring women share a common trait: They choose comfort and versatility when picking out their outfit.Whether that means never wearing heels, or staying away from anything too restrictive, here are a few dos and don’ts to note when getting ready.  We hope these tips will make dressing up in the morning that much easier.

Don’t: Wear Anything That’s Not Versatile Enough to Survive the Whole Day

One word that should define the modern woman’s morning outfit decisions should be comfort.  Strive for comfort at all times. For some, it may mean never wearing heels. For others it could be wearing platforms or wedges. And don’t forget that those sneakers are in right now.

Don’t: No visible panty lines please!

“No visible panty lines” is another important rule to keep in mind when preparing for the day.  That way you can do your work, or go about your business without worrying that you are scandalizing anyone, or giving a negative image.

    Don’t:  No overmatching.

And while picking the right underwear for the day ahead is crucial, another big no-go when getting dressed, being too matchy-matchy (except for denim on denim). Except you are doing the monochrome thing, your clothes, and accessories don’t necessarily have to always match, that is so old school.

    Don’t: Sacrificing comfort for glamour.

Always dress in pieces that make you comfortable. For some it may mean not to dressing too young, or flamboyantly. Its okay to wear trends, but not at the expense of comfort. For work, avoid pieces that are restrictive or uncomfortable, for the simple reason that they will just irritate you within an hour.

Don’t: Putting on makeup before getting dressed

When it comes to dressing for work, when getting ready in the morning, never put on makeup before getting fully dressed.

    Don’t: Wearing leggings to work

And whatever you do, never wear leggings to the office, except you are off to the gym. And when you do, wearing a G-string would be a good idea.

     Don’t: Wearing anything distracting

For busy professionals, and entrepreneurial women a busy schedule means that you are constantly on the go, it’s all about clothing that can get you through anything. Entrepreneurship leaves you much less time for everything else, so versatility and comfort become increasingly important filters for one’s personal style.  Avoid anything that distracts you from focusing on what’s important; instead choose to gravitate toward real, beautiful clothes that you can live and work in.

Don’t: Getting dressed without considering the weather

When it comes to morning rituals, one often overlooked factor is getting dressed without considering the weather. Walking to work every day means that being prepared is key to making through the day unscathed. So you can choose to consider  the weather forecast, or face the consequences at your own peril.
