Presidency: PDP southern govs, Southeast aspirants insist on zoning

Six of the eight Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) southern governors rose from a meeting in Abuja late Friday, insisting that the party owed it a duty to zone its presidential ticket to the south.

Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Duoye Diri (Bayelsa), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Nyesom Wike (Rivers), and Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom) hinged their demand on the need for the leadership of the PDP to toe the line of equity, justice and fairness regarding zoning.

Four PDP presidential aspirants from the South East, namely Peter Obi, Pius Anyim, Sam Ohuabunwa and Nwachukwu Anakwenze, at a meeting of their own in Abuja yesterday, expressed support for the governors on their position on zoning.

The PDP is currently in a fix on the issue of zoning of its presidential ticket for the 2023 elections.

The Governor Samuel Ortom-led committee set up by the leadership of the party to advise it on the matter last week turned in its report but left the final decision to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to take.

Abia State Governor Ikpeazu, who briefed journalists at the end of the Friday meeting, recalled the joint resolutions taken by the 17-member Southern Governors Forum (SGF) last year in which they advocated that Nigeria’s next president must come from the south.

The SGF, which cuts across party lines, had met twice in Lagos and Asaba in 2021, stressing the need for power to shift to the South in 2023, after President Muhammadu Buhari would have served out his two terms of eight years.

Speaking against the backdrop of recent developments in the PDP, Ikpeazu said: “We have watched with keen interest the development in our party, especially concerning zoning.

“Our position is that first, we are committed to the unity of our party and we have worked hard to make sure that this party remains a strong and viable vehicle to rescue Nigeria come 2023.

“Be that as it may, we want to draw your attention to the fact that we had agreed as Southern governors in Lagos and also in Delta that this party has to respect the zoning principle as enshrined in our constitution.

“And to that effect, we insist that the first thing to do is zone the presidency to the south, and we stand on that position.

“We have not seen any reason to change that position, because the party was founded on the basis of equity and justice.

“And we also think that equity and justice are important pillars that will ultimately stabilise our polity towards our journey in rescuing Nigeria.”

Asked about northern aspirants who have already purchased nomination forms for the PDP presidential primaries, Ikpeazu said it was up to the party’s leadership to take a firm decision on the matter.

His words: “If you want to take a decision on policy, you don’t look at problems on the face and you take a decision; you take a decision and remain firm on that decision.

“We think that what this country lacks today is our ability to dispense equity and justice. It may be difficult, it may be a bitter pill, but we need to stand with the truth.”

On the pressure being mounted by some other PDP governors and other stakeholders to have the ticket zoned to the North, Ikpeazu said it was not his duty to speculate on what others were doing.

“It is not my duty to speculate on what others are doing,” he said.

He added:”But you must ask yourself what is the truth; that if we do it today, will it serve the tenets of equity and justice?”

Governors Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) and Godwin Obaseki (Edo) were absent and did not send representatives.

Obi, Anyim, Ohuabunwa, Anakwenze back Southern Govs on power shift

Four PDP presidential aspirants from the South East, Peter Obi, Pius Anyim, Sam Ohuabunwa and Nwachukwu Anakwenze, expressed support  for the governors’ position.

Obi, Anyim, Ohuabunwa and Anakwenze met in Abuja yesterday and agreed to work together to ensure that one of them emerges the PDP flag bearer.

They did not say how they intend to go about it.

Anyim, who addressed journalists after the meeting, said the four aspirants have been meeting for some time, hinting that more persons might soon join the race.

He said: “We are pleased to have you this morning with us and we are to inform you that all the presidential aspirants from the Southeast met this morning.

“However, it is our knowledge that more aspirants may have obtained forms under the PDP. We hope that they will join us a little later.

“So in the interim, four of us are presidential aspirants on the platform of our great party, the PDP.

“We have agreed to work together as a team. We will work together to ensure that a South Easterner emerge as PDP flag bearer for the 2023 presidential election.

We intend to consult with other zones on this issue and it is based on fairness and equity.

“In doing so, it is important to note that we have always supported other zones and we now expect them to reciprocate.”

Anyim tried to go round reporters’ questions on how they would produce a consensus candidate from their group.

He only said: “When we get to the bridge, we will cross it. But we will work together in the interest of the party, in the interest of the nation, and in the interest of the Southeast.”

Asked if the four aspirants were working in tandem with the Southern PDP governors, Anyim directed that the question should be put to the PDP Governors’ Forum.

He said: “Whatever they (Southern Governors’ Forum) are doing or whatever they are not doing is not necessarily before us. So when you meet them in their own meeting, you can ask them.

“If our position tallies with that of the Southern governors, good luck. But we are taking this position in the interest of national unity, in the interest of PDP, and in fact in line with the PDP constitution.

“We believe that the PDP constitution favours what we are doing and we have to boldly step out with this decision.”

No fewer than 14 aspirants have so far purchased the party’s presidential nomination forms.

They include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

Also in the race are Ovation magazine publisher Dele Momodu; financial expert and technocrat, Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen; former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose; Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike; Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel and a lone female contender, Tariele Diana Oliver.

UPDATED: I consulted widely before declaring for Presidency – Amaechi

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, has said he consulted widely before declaring his intention to contest the 2023 presidency.

Reading a letter titled: ‘Forward with courage’ at the Thanksgiving organised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Amaechi said he was qualified to run.

He said he had been in governance for 23 years from being a Speaker for eight years to be a Governor and now Minister.

Amaechi said: “My aspiration is not about fulfilling any personal ambition. I am contesting for the office because I believe that it is my moral duty to give what I can in the service of my country.

“To sustain and intensify present efforts at solving our national problems, our democracy must ensure the emergence of a leadership that is equipped with broad experience in governance to ensure stability and continuity.

“To sustain our democracy and preserve our unity, we need a steady hand and a passion for success in a nation that remains united to pursue prosperity for all Nigerians.

“It is this combination of experience and patriotic passion that I bring to the table. I have been in the political arena for 23 years. I have served at every level of government – local, state, and federal.

“I have served both as a political appointee and an elected official. I have served both as an executive – as Governor of Rivers State and as a legislator – as Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

“Today, I stand as an aspirant to the position of President because of that same passion for people; that same drive for results. More than ever before, I am burning with the zeal to make a decisive difference in the lives of all Nigerians.

“I pledge my heart, mind and soul to the task of building a Nigeria in which every child can go to school, every young person can find work or support to start a business, every citizen can travel safely around the country and sleep at night knowing that law and order prevail and every Nigerian feels included, heard, and respected.”

Other leaders of the party such as the Rivers Chairman of APC, Chief Emeka Beke; a governorship aspirant, Dakuku Peterside among others said the APC had been repositioned to succeed the incumbent Governor, Nyesom Wike.

Beke said: “We are here to thank God for the victory he has already given us ahead of time.

“We want to thank God for the success of the Congresses in the state. When we wanted to go for the national convention, the devil wanted to strike, but God protected us. The mandate has returned for us to take part in the 2023 elections and we will be victorious.”

In his for solidarity speech, the Plateau State Governor State, Simon Lalong said: “You know that Amaechi is the Dan Amana Daura, he is somebody we trust. I am also here for Progressives Governor’s Forum.

“This is a small take-off from Rivers State. I am happy today because six years ago we came here and started a campaign that produced a brand new President. That campaign was led by your son, Amaechi.

“When we were told on the television that there was no APC in Rivers State. What we have seen today, many people will not sleep.

“We will not take it by force, we will work with the grace of God. I don’t want to talk too much, because they will say I am his friend. But a friend that is good you will always go with him. This Thanksgiving has vindicated him. Let the will of God”

Adams Oshiomhole, a former National Chairman of APC and former Governor of Edo State, commended Amaechi for the unity and reconciliation in Rivers APC, calling for a stronger bond among the party faithful.

Oshiomhole said: “Let me appreciate the man who has invited us for Thanksgiving and for the reconciliation of the party in the state. I want to appreciate the Minister of Transportation Chibuike Amaechi, who has extended his invitation.

“I am excited that we have united our party in Rivers State. I am here to witness the unity of APC in Rivers State. May God help us to uphold this unity and service and remove bitterness in every heart and position us for victory.”

On his part, Peterside said the APC looked unstoppable in its goal of winning the presidential, governorship and all other elective positions in the state in 2023.

Dakuku said the APC was on the right path of recovery and victory to end what he described as the “sad breast-pocket governance style of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state”.

He said that every indicator for an APC victory in 2023 was positive, adding that recent successes recorded by the party in the state from the ward to the local government and state Congresses, had reinvigorated its membership to a new height in readiness to kick out the ruling party in the state.

He said: “You all have seen the mammoth crowd here which points to a new height in APC’s renewed movement towards ending the breast-pocket governance Rivers people found themselves in since 2015.

“Our people have suffered enough in the hands of Wike and PDP but APC is set to end all of that and reset the state to achieving her full potential. That PDP must go in 2023 is our resolve, and working in harmony, we shall achieve that.

“Today is a statement in the party’s resolve to terminate the wicked regime of Wike and his PDP and in turn entrench good governance and grow our beloved state.”

2023: Six South Govs insist on PDP ticket

Six of the eight Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) southern Governors have insisted on having the party’s 2023 presidential ticket zoned to the region.

The Governors, at a meeting on Friday night, hinged their demand on the need for the leadership of the PDP to toe the line of equity, justice and fairness regarding zoning.

The six that attended the meeting, which was held at the Akwa Ibom Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, were Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu); Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Duoye Diri (Bayelsa).

Others were Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia); Nyesom Wike (Rivers) and Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom).

Governors Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) and Godwin Obaseki (Edo) did not attend the meeting and they did not send anyone to represent them.

Governor Ikpeazu, who addressed journalists after the marathon meeting, hinged the Governors’ position on the resolution jointly taken by the 17-member Southern Governors Forum (SGF).

The SGF, which cuts across party lines, had, through a resolution adopted during the Forum’s meetings in Lagos and Asaba in 2021, insisted that power must shift to the South in 2023 after President Muhammadu Buhari would have served out his two terms of eight years.

    Addressing journalists, Ikpeazu said:
“We have watched with keen interest the development in our party, especially concerning zoning.

“And we also think that equity and justice are important pillars that will ultimately stabilise our polity towards our journey in rescuing Nigeria”.

Speaking on the fate of some northern aspirants who had already purchased the presidential nomination forms, Ikpeazu said it’s left for the PDP leadership to take a firm decision on the matter.

“If you want to take a decision on a policy, you don’t look at problems on the face and you make a decision.

“You make a decision and remain firm on that decision. We think that what this country lacks today is our ability to dispense equity and justice. It may be difficult, it may be a bitter pill, but we need to stand with the truth”, Ikpeazu said.

On pressure being mounted by some of their colleagues and other stakeholders to have the ticket zoned to the North, Ikpeazu said it’s not his duty to speculate on what others are doing.

He said: “I want to reiterate the position of the Southern governors on this matter. It is not my duty to speculate on what others are doing.

“But you must ask yourself what is the truth; that if we do it today, will it serve the tenets of equity and justice?”.

  • Zoning: Atiku, Wike, Saraki, Tambuwal shift lobby to PDP NEC, BOT

Zoning: Atiku, Wike, Saraki, Tambuwal shift lobby to PDP NEC, BOT

Following reports that the Governor Samuel Ortom Committee had recommended that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should not zone the presidency in 2023, the presidential gladiators in the party have shifted lobby to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT).

The two bodies are the highest organs of the party, and whatever they decide on the issue of zoning is final.

The organs are likely to meet any moment from now to consider the report of the Ortom committee.

Sources told The Nation that the three camps that have emerged among the presidential aspirants are piling pressure on members of the NEC and BOT to decide in their favour.

While the pro-consensus advocates comprising ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal and Alhaji Mohammed Hayatuden are asking that the consensus option should be recommended to avoid friction, the pro-open contest promoters symbolised by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar want the recommendation of the Ortom committee affirmed.

The third group led by Wike and many other Southern governors of the party are lobbying the two organs to zone the presidency to the South since the North has produced the national chairman in the person of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu from Benue State.

“The aspirants and their field men are in Abuja reaching out to anybody that matters in the PDP on this issue,” a source told our reporter last night.

“The arguments of the campaigners range from the need to present a marketable candidate that can lead the party to victory to avoid another four years in political wilderness, to the need for fairness, equity, justice and inclusiveness. It’s going to be a tough one for the party,” the source said.

Atiku, who has not been a party to the several meetings called by the pro-consensus forces over the last few weeks, is understood to have made up his mind to test his popularity at the PDP presidential primary election next month.

An Atiku ally and governorship aspirant in one of the South West states said the camp of the former vice president would back him all the way in the agitation for the party to conduct a primary election to pick its presidential flag bearer.

“We are undeterred. We have resolved to wait for the party’s decision,” the source said.

Emerging from one of the recent meetings by Saraki, Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed in Bauchi, the former governor of Kwara State said the three of them had resolved to pick a consensus aspirant among them.

He said: “We came here and had a meeting for about two hours. All the three of us that have shown interest in leading this country, our concern is for the hardship our people are going through, the high cost of living and also looking ahead towards 2023.

“In doing so, we met and discussed that with 2023 ahead of us and in trying to rescue this country, the unity, stability and growth of the country are more important than individual ambitions.

“We believe that if the three of us are working together honestly, committed and with a lot of zeal for this country, there will be great hope for this country going forward.”

While emphasising that the three of them could not do the work alone because of its enormity, Saraki said it was for that reason that they had decided to carry all stakeholders in the party along.

“To do that, we must also carry along key stakeholders of the party,” he said.

A close ally of Atiku said associates of the ex-vice president had warned him to beware of the consensus arrangement.

His words: “As politicians, we are wary of the arrangement and the motives behind it. Yes, we have had to discuss the development and our position is that it is not something we will want our principal to be a part of.

“Have you seen us talk about it anywhere? No. I am not even supposed to talk about it with you. This is because Atiku will not be party to any plan to exclude anyone from the presidential race. Moreover, all serious aspirants have already obtained the nomination form.

“Efforts have been made to drag us into the discussion about consensus candidate from the north and we have not hidden the fact that we would rather contest in an open race.

“We must not do anything that will further fragment the party with the confusion occasioned by the zoning arguments. If the talk is about consensus generally and not northern consensus, maybe.”

No fewer than three meetings have been held by the pro-consensus aspirants in the north to discuss the possibility and modality of producing a consensus northern candidate.

It was also gathered that some northern PDP governors who are not interested in the presidential race have been drafted into the consensus plot to convince Atiku and other aspirants to be part of the arrangement.

“But not much has been achieved by the governors too. Aside the people who mooted the idea, other presidential aspirants from the north are not comfortable with the arrangement,” a party source claimed.

Perhaps to defray the fears of some of the aspirants, especially Atiku, Saraki had said the consensus move was not designed to exclude Atiku or any other aspirant from the race.

He said: “Those making such insinuations are mischievous people who never see any good out of anything. We are not shutting anybody out. As we said, we are going to see him (Atiku).

“We are going to see other aspirants. There are other aspirants in the party. This is not about shutting anybody out. It is about uniting everybody with the interests of this country. And you will see when we begin to move around. But we are not limited to anybody.’’

Speaking on the zoning debate within the PDP, allies of the former Vice President said they are waiting for the party to make specific statement on the issue.

”We are waiting for the party. We are acting based on directives by the party. Our principal obtained the form because the party made it possible for all aspirants to do that.

“So, we are not against any zone of the country. Atiku wants to be the President of the whole of Nigeria and not just a northern or southern President,” a source told our correspondent on Thursday.

Court to proceed with eight-count terrorism charge against Kanu

    • Reduces charges to seven from 15

    • Sit-at-home protest grounds Imo, Abia, Ebonyi

    • Gunmen attack soldiers in Abia; shoot 30 cows in Anambra

    • Separatist group threatens to expose those behind S/East killings

Social and economic activities were yesterday paralysed in much of Imo, Abia and Ebonyi states as residents complied with the sit-at-home order of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in solidarity with its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu’s trial for terrorism related charges resumed yesterday in Abuja with Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court striking out eight of the 15 count charge preferred against the  IPOB leader by the federal government.

The court also cleared the Federal Government of allegation of forcibly abducting Kanu from Kenya to stand trial at home.

It is expected to rule on bail for the accused on May 18 while commencement of his trial was fixed for May 26.

A few hours before yesterday’s sitting of the court, gunmen ambushed and attacked an army patrol team in the commercial city of Aba, Abia State.

Another gang invaded Igboukwu Market in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, turning their guns on cows and goats. About 30 of the animals were killed.

Markets, shops, schools, banks and filling stations in the three states were shut and the  roads deserted. Local government secretariats and motor parks were not exempted from the shutdown.

Workers on essential duties had to walk long distances to go to their offices.

The few okada riders who summoned the courage to operate hiked their fares.

Armed police personnel were deployed at public buildings.

Court to proceed with seven count charge against Kanu

Justice Binta Nyako, ruling yesterday on Kanu’s preliminary objection to his trial, held that the order proscribing IPOB subsisted despite an appeal against the proscription order.

“This issue is still on appeal. The order proscribing the organisation is still subsisting until it is vacated,” she said.

A former Chief Judge of the court, Justice Adamu Kafarati (now late) had in a September 2017 ruling granted an ex-parte application by the Federal Government declaring IPOB an unlawful organisation.

Justice Kafarati, in another ruling in January 2018, rejected an application by IPOB seeking the vacation of the proscription order.

Besides, Justice Nyako yesterday faulted claim by lawyer to Kanu, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) that the IPOB leader was unlawfully brought in from Kenya.

Ozekhome had argued that Kanu was abducted and forcefully brought to Nigeria in violation of known human rights provisions.

Similar argument formed the subject of a N50billion suit filed for Kanu on Thursday by Ozekhome before the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Nyako said Kanu remained a fugitive on the strength of the bench warrant against him.

She added: “Rendition for the purpose of criminal investigation is allowed. In the instant case, there is a bench warrant on the defendant. Suffice it to say he is a fugitive before the court.

The judge further held that contrary to the argument of the defence, her court was clothed with the requisite jurisdiction to try Kanu for the offence he allegedly committed outside the court.

She struck out eight of the 15 count charges preferred against Kanu because, as she said, the dropped counts did not disclose any offence against Kanu.

She said: “In this instant preliminary objection application, I have read the counts and come to the conclusion that counts 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 have not disclosed any offence against the defendant.

“Counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 show some allegations which the defendant has to answer.

“The court shall proceed to try the defendant on those counts.”

The full charges against him now are as follows:

COUNT ONE “That you Nnamdi Kanu, Male, Adult, of Afaraukwu Ibeku, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, sometimes in 2021, being a member and the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, a proscribed organisation, did commit an act in furtherance of an act of terrorism against the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the People of Nigeria by making a broadcast received and heard in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this honourable Court, with intent to intimidate the population, and you threatened that people will die, the whole world will stand still and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 1(2)(b) of the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act, 2013.

COUNT THREE “That you Nnamdi Kanu, Male, Adult, of Afaraukwu Ibeku, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State on diverse dates between 2018 and 2021 within the jurisdiction of this honourable court professed yourself to be a member and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, a proscribed organisation in Nigeria and that you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 16 of the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act 2013.

The judge then entertained argument on the bail application filed by Kanu’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), who prayed the court to admit his client to bail and release him to his custody.

But prosecuting lawyer, Magaji Labaran, objected, saying that the IPOB leader had violated the terms of an earlier bail granted him.

Labaran said: “My lord granted him bail in 2017 on health ground, but since then till date, no medical record was submitted to the court until he jumped bail.

“What we should be saying is contempt of court because he has flagrantly violated the orders of the court.”

He stressed that the court should be guided by its discretion, particularly the circumstances of the case.

Labaran added that in the alternative, the court should order accelerated hearing in the case so that the defendant could know his fate one way or the other.

Justice Nyako adjourned till May 18 for ruling on bail and May 26 for commencement of trial.

30 cows, goats killed as gunmen invade Anambra market

Another gang stormed the Igboukwu cattle market in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday night, shooting no fewer than 30 cows and goats dead.

The gunmen had earlier burnt down the Aguata Local Government Secretariat and vehicles at Ekwulobia. Aguata is Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s LGA of origin.

A source at the market said the animals belonged to an Igbo man.

Confirming the incident, Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga described it as cruelty to animal.

He said: “What happened was that some elements, while riding on motorbikes yesterday evening and shooting sporadically into the air, got to the cattle market, and while shooting, some cattle were shot too.

“We have extended our surveillance to that area and our men are already working. This is cruelty to animal and very condemnable. The cattle in question were owned by people of the area.”

Soludo: Attacks are mindless criminality perpetrated by outsiders

Governor Soludo, during an assessment tour of the Aguata Local Government Area Secretariat yesterday described the recent attacks in the state as acts of  “mindless criminality” by fleeing criminals who had been sacked from their operational camp by joint operations of Nigerian security forces.

He said military operations around the borders of Aguluezechukwu and Ogborji communities in the council had led to the dislodging of the arsonists who had operated for about two years.

He said that information from those arrested revealed that they were not from Anambra while worrisome exhibits were discovered from them.

According to Soludo, yesterday, combined forces got to a criminal camp between Agulezechukwu and Ogborji, and that is from where they have operated unhindered for over two years.

“They attacked, kidnapped, maimed and burnt places,” he said.

“They were smoked out, the camp destroyed and as they were fleeing cowardly, they decided to set the Local Government Secretariat ablaze, but thank God, the police came on time and smoked them out.

“From the statistics so far, 85 per cent of people arrested come from one of the states in the South East and the remaining 15 per cent from another state in the Southeast.

“It is really our people doing this to themselves. From the items recovered from them, they are common criminals. There is a register of those kidnapped, how much they paid, balance remaining, date of kidnap and how, shrines, arms and food items.”

Soludo asked all genuine agitators to embrace the olive branch extended to them by coming out of the forests and dropping their guns for rehabilitation.

He warned that anybody in the bush with guns would be regarded as a criminal and treated as one.

He said there was no hiding place for criminals in Anambra as the people of the state were determined to recover their space and enthrone peace for livable, conducive and prosperous economic activities.

Uzodimma vows to flush out bandits, says ‘we can’t leave Imo for you’

Soludo’s counterpart in Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, vowed that he would never surrender the state to the bandits disturbing the peace of the people.

Inaugurating the State Council of Traditional Rulers at the Government House, Owerri yesterday, Uzodimma charged the traditional rulers to partner with the state government to flush out every criminal in their communities.

He alleged that some politicians in the state were backing the hoodlums in carrying out the destructions and burning of police stations in the state.

He said: “We cannot leave the state for anybody. Rather, we would chase away the criminals. We know the politicians that are behind these problems. We shall defeat them.”

Responding on behalf of the council, its chairman, Eze Emmanuel Okeke, thanked the governor for his effort in developing the state and promised a robust partnership with the state government to surmount the insecurity challenges facing the state.

IPOB vows to unmask suspected killers of six women in Imo

Proscribed IPOB, responding yesterday to allegations that it was the brains behind the violence in the South East, vowed to expose the sponsors of the killings and other security challenges in the geo-political zone.

Media and Publicity Secretary of the group, Emma Powerful, particularly condemned the recent killing of six women in Imo State while sharing rice.

He said: “We wish to reiterate once again to Biafrans, friends of Biafra and lovers of freedom, that IPOB has no hands in the criminality and insecurity being perpetrated in Biafra territory by imported hoodlums, dissidents and wicked politicians. Those behind this barbarity are not IPOB members or ESN operatives.

“These atrocities are witnessed more in the region where politicians are fighting themselves for selfish reasons. We totally condemn the killing of six innocent women in Imo State by hired hoodlums as they shared rice.

“We condemn those who were behind the murder of those women and we must fish out the perpetrators of this heinous crime against our mothers.

“Our mothers were raped by these vampires created and sponsored by politicians in Imo State to terrorise our people and implicate IPOB and ESN members.

“Anybody who is involved in such heinous act must regret his or her wicked action. The perpetrators of this barbarity should be ready to reap the fruit of their labour.

“The recent killing of our six mothers and women from Owerriebeiri Community in Orlu LGA of Imo State will mark the end of those behind this wickedness. Their days are numbered. The spirit and land of Biafra will hunt them down.

“We advise our people to be circumspect this political season as enemies of Biafra have schemed different ways of causing havoc in our land and blaming it on IPOB and Biafra agitators to further demonise us.

“Everybody should be wise and vigilant. IPOB doesn’t spill blood. Anybody staging attack anywhere has nothing to do with IPOB.

“IPOB has been pursuing the freedom for the people of former Eastern region and Midwestern regions since nine years without involving in any act of criminality, but some people in their desperation to blackmail IPOB and Nnamdi KANU, these dissidents and unfortunate people claiming they are working for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu emerged with their evil agenda, and the emergence of these criminals has turned our region into a very dangerous situation because some unscrupulous politicians are behind and sponsoring them.

“We also condemn the numerous abductions, car snatching, raping and attacks on so many institutions in our land. We strongly condemn the recent attacks on Nnewi South LGA, the burning of the country home of Ohaneze Ndigbo President, Professor George Obiozor in Awommamma, Imo State and the attack on the palace of HRH Igwe Anayo Obika of Ezinfite, Nnewi South.

“Those behind these devilish acts will regret their actions. What these vampires did was sacrilege and IPOB volunteers, ESN and God Almighty Chukwu Okike Abiama will not allow them to go unpunished.

“These vampires should know that they were born by women and have no rights whatsoever to take lives or lay hands on mothers and women.

“The insecurity and killing of our innocent citizens are unacceptable by IPOB worldwide and we must bring down those behind this devilish activities.

“We are urging the governors and other politicians to join hands with IPOB under Mazi Nnamdi KANU to stop the unnecessary waste of lives in our region and stop the RISING waste of lives in our territory because it might turn against you tomorrow.

  • IPOB remains proscribed, says Court, okays Kanu’s rendition from Kenya

IPOB remains proscribed, says Court, okays Kanu’s rendition from Kenya

A Federal High Court in Abuja has held that the order proscribing the pro-Biafra group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) subsists despite an appeal against the proscription order.

Justice Binta Nyako, in a ruling on Friday on Kanu’s preliminary objection, held that although IPOB has appealed the order proscribing it, the order remains until it is set aside.

She said: “This issue is still on appeal. The order proscribing the organisation is still subsisting until it is vacated.”

A former Chief Judge of the court, Justice Adamu Kafarati (now late) in a ruling in September 2017 granted an ex-parte application by the Federal Government, declared IPOB unlawful organisation.

Justice Kafarati, in another ruling in January 2018, rejected an application by IPOB, seeking the vacation of the proscription order.

Also in her ruling on Friday, Justice Nyako faulted claim by lawyer to Kanu, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) that the IPOB leader was unlawfully renditioned from Kenya.

Ozekhome had argued that Kanu was abducted and forcefully bought to Nigeria in violation of known human rights provisions.

Similar argument formed the subject of a N50billion suit filed for Kanu on Thursday by Ozekhome before the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Justice Nyako, in her ruling on Friday, said Kanu remains a fugitive, because of a bench warrant against him.

She added: “Rendition for the purpose of criminal investigation is allowed. In the instant case, there is bench warrant on the defendant, suffice it to say, he is a fugitive before the court.”

The judge further held that, as against argument by the defence, her court is clothed with the requisite jurisdiction to try Kanu for offence he allegedly committed outside the court.

She struck out 8 from the 15 counts contained in charge on Kanu was standing trial.

Justice Nyako held that the affected counts do not disclose any offence against Kanu.

The judge said: “In this instant preliminary objection application, I have read the counts and come to the conclusion that counts  6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 have not disclosed any offence against the defendant.

“‘Counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 show some allegations, which the defendant has to answer.

“The court shall proceed to try the defendant on those counts,” she said.

The judge later entertained argument on the bail application filed for Kanu by his lawyer.

Ozekhome, while arguing the bail application, contended that until a person is tried and convicted, he should be allowed to walk free.

He argued that in view of the presumption of innocence, his client is innocent until the contrary is proved.

Ozekhome prayed the court to admit his client to bail and release him to his custody.

Prosecuting lawyer, Magaji Labaran urged the court to refuse bail to the defendant, noting that the IPOB leader Kanu had violated the earlier bail granted him.

Labaran said: “My lord granted him bail on 2017 on health ground, but since then till date, no medical record was submitted to the court until he jumped bail.

“What we should be saying is contempt of court because he has flagrantly violated the orders of the court.

He stressed that the court should be guided by its discretion, particularly the circumstances of the case.

Labaran added that, in the alternative, the court should order accelerated hearing in the case so that the defendant could know his fate one way or the other.

Justice Nyako adjourned till May 18 for ruling on bail and May 26 for commencement of trial.
