    How next President should emerge, by Catholic Bishops

    The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) on Sunday said competence should be the main focus in the emergence of a new President in 2023.

    CBCN President, Archbishop Augustine Akubeze, who said this at the opening ceremony of the first plenary of the Conference in 2022 in Abuja, urged Nigerians to resist the temptation of falling into a divisive political campaign ahead of the general elections.

    His words: “We cannot run away from the fact that very often a people get the kind of Government they deserve. Yes, this is true. The numbers of Nigerians who vote are very few.

    “For those who do not vote, they have already voted by allowing a few to determine the future of the majority. The argument that INEC or other agents may not make our votes count is no longer acceptable. We must exercise our right to vote and then speak to protect our vote.

    “We call on all Nigerians to get their Permanent Voters’ Card, and get ready to vote according to their personal conviction of who is capable of leading Nigeria or the State to a better life.

    “Vote for those who can ensure the security of life and property. Vote for those who have shown that they have the capacity to unite us as a people.

    “Vote for people who possess the capacity to make Nigeria into an industrial hub for Africa. Vote for people who can make Nigeria a land of opportunity for all.

    “Vote for people who can make our dreams come to life. Nigerians must resist the temptation of falling into a divisive political campaign.”

    Akubeze also said that the state of the nation is such that the bishops have realised that in spite of the people’s failures, particularly the country’s leadership, God was still at work in the land.

    He urged Nigerians to seek the unity of the nation which, according to him, must precede sustainable peace.

    “We are also united in our common search for a nation that cares for everyone. We are united in our common dream for a Nigeria that provides opportunities for everyone.

    “We are united in praying and working for a Nigeria where Government at all levels are accountable to the people who gave them power.

    “We are united in our yearning and desire for a Nigeria with strong institutions. We are all united in looking forward to a Nigeria that will be audacious enough to ensure that our constitution reflects our common aspiration to live in unity, peace and justice. We are united in seeking a constitution that will provide for the needs of every Nigerian,” the CBCN said.

    The Catholic Bishops added 2023 offers Nigerians another opportunity to fix what they got wrong in the past, especially in their participation in the political life of the nation.

    President Muhammadu Buhari has departed Abuja for London, the United Kingdom, for a scheduled medical check, which is expected to last for about two weeks.

    The President, who initially planned embarking on the trip to London from Nairobi, Kenya, where he attended the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) 50th anniversary event, returned home last Friday.

    Fresh facts emerge on Bamise, 22, missing from BRT

    The family of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, the 22-year-old female fashion designer whose whereabouts became unknown after she boarded a BRT bus from Chevron Estate in Ajah on her way to Oshodi on February 26, is in deep sorrow over the incident.

    In a chat with our correspondent yesterday, Bamise’s sibling, Elizabeth, lamented alleged abduction of her sister by the driver of the bus, identified as Nice Andrew Omininikoron.

    Although the operators of the bus said they were awaiting the outcome of police investigation into the matter, the driver, The Nation learnt, was still at large.

    Elizabeth told our correspondent yesterday that her missing sister was heading to the brother’s house at Ikotun to stay with the wife who was in ‘labour’.

    She reportedly boarded the bus with number 240257 at 7:30pm and became suspicious when the driver told her to sit at one of the back seats.

    Bamise’s last movement

    Narrating her sister’s last movement, Elizabeth said: “On Saturday evening (February 26), my sister closed at 7 pm. She normally had breaks on Sundays. She works at Ajah as a fashion designer and normally works from Monday to Saturday.

    “So when she closed on Saturday (February 26), she wanted to go to my brother’s house because his wife was in labour. My brother stays at Ikotun (a Lagos suburb).

    “My missing sister’s house is in Ogun State, Ota precisely. She stays with our aunt who is the first born.

    “She called my brother three days before then that she would be coming but she did not know when. On the day she left Ajah, she wanted to surprise my brother by not telling him that she was already on her way.

    “She boarded a bus from Chevron Bus Stop. When she entered the BRT bus, it was only her, and there was no light inside the bus.

    “She had felt safe inside the BRT bus since it is a popular state bus, but she wondered why it was only her that was in the bus and the driver didn’t pick any other passenger.

    “She was even conversing with a colleague of hers because she felt unsafe. She was sending voice notes to her friend. Her friend advised her to drop since the driver didn’t pick up any other passenger.

    “Before entering, she informed her friend that the driver was passing some remarks at her but she did n’t answer.

    “So later on, the driver later picked up three people on the road: two men and a lady. Then she now felt calm.

    “Before the driver picked the three other persons who had disguised as passengers, she made several videos of the bus and the driver and sent it to her friend. The video captured the bus number. It helped us in tracking the bus.

    “Her phone was not low. It is a new phone she just bought three weeks ago. Her friend chatted with her several times, but she didn’t reply.

    “She tried calling her via normal call a few minutes to 8 pm, but she didn’t pick up.

    “Around 7:32 pm, she posted ‘God, it is your protection I need’ on her Whatsapp status.

    “I saw the status but I didn’t see it on time because I was not online.

    “After repeated calls, her friend said she heard some voices underneath trying to struggle to get the phone from her.”

    Distraught mother

    As would be expected, Bamise’s mother of 10 — five boys and five girls — has been seriously disturbed since her daughter went missing. In one of the viral videos seen by The Nation, the distraught mother was seen wailing in front of a bus numbered 240257, at one of the terminals of LBSL, said to be the bus Bamise had boarded.

    “This is the vehicle that Bamise boarded. It has been parked. They say they cannot find the driver. Bamise boarded the vehicle at Ajah and said she was going to Oshodi. “The vehicle got to its destination but the child did not get home. We can’t find her. They must find Bamise for me. I didn’t tell her to go to Lagos to die.”

    ‘How her friend alerted us about her plight’

    Asked how the family learnt about Bamise’s plight, Elizabeth said: “It was her friend who was chatting with her that alerted us.

    “She called one of my brothers to ask for her whereabouts, but he said he had not seen her.

    “I was even in church when they told me that they could not reach her.

    “My sister is someone I can vouch for because she is focused and determined. I’ve been crying because I am devastated.

    “Since the day she went missing, we’ve been going around different stations. We tracked the driver and the phone number of my sister.

    “When we tracked it independently of the police, we tracked it down to Oshodi terminal station. When we got there, they didn’t answer us properly.

    “We were told the driver was supposed to resume by 2 pm, but we didn’t know he was around and we were there till 3/4pm.

    “We later learnt the following day that the driver was around but took to his heels when he learnt that there was trouble.

    “We went to Maroko and Ajah police stations to lodge complaints and we’ve been shuffling through these stations.

    “We had to look for his guarantors. After locating one of his guarantors, we were told by the elder brother of the guarantor that his junior brother was not aware he was being used as a guarantor.

    “The other guarantor stays at Ekoro axis, while the other stays at Ikoyi axis. They’ve been arrested.

    “We’ve spoken with the Commissioner of Police. He had a phone call meeting with the terminal operators and the family to ask for questions that would aid investigation.

    “We’ve sent SOS to the governor for about four days but there is no response. We’ve even gone on social media but the government has not given an audience.

    “All I want is for my sister to be found. We were told to write a letter to the terminal but they refused us access.

    “The police are not taking this issue for granted; they are putting themselves in our shoes because they are handling the case properly”

    Last location tracked

    According to Elizabeth, the family made an attempt to track the driver’s location and it showed through his phone that he was two streets away from where her missing sister is.

    “The last location of the phone tracked is in Ogun State, but the driver is currently on the run.

    “We were told that the bus that is directly involved in this whole issue is still operating. This is insensitive.

    “Everyone has been disturbed since Saturday that she went missing. The whole family is devastated. We need God’s intervention. I have been fasting and praying.”

    Matter under investigation

    When The Nation visited the Oshodi terminal on Saturday, normal operations were ongoing with various buses loading commuters for various destinations.

    A staff at the terminal, who did not want to be named, said the Oshodi bus terminal is where BRT buses usually load to various destinations and that the family had been directed to Lagos Bus Services Limited where the case would be handled.

    He however noted that the terminal operators had escalated the matter because the issue became a stain on the terminal.

    “When the family came, they were angry and wanted to create a scene. I now advised them to go to LBS where the matter would be handled, so they are on it.

    “The police are investigating too”.

    The Nation learnt that Bamise’s family had held a meeting with the Lagos Bus Service Ltd. (LBSL), operators of BRT, on Wednesday, March 2, and the latter assured that efforts were being made to track down the driver.

    Police spokesman in Lagos, Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the incident, said it was under investigation.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, has directed that no stone should be left unturned to locate her whereabouts. Search parties have also been organised,” Ajisebutu said.

    Ukraine: 368 trapped Nigerian students drink, cook with snow, ice

    No fewer than 368 Nigerian students still trapped in Sumy State University (SumDU), Ukraine, are now drinking and cooking with ice and snow following water shortage in the city of Sumy.

    They are part of the over 800 international students hiding in bunkers at hostel 3 in SumDU.

    They told The Nation that their water supply was disrupted and the city plunged into darkness since March 3 when bombs destroyed a water plant and power substation serving the Northeastern Ukrainian city.

    The country has seen heavy fighting following a Russian invasion on February 24 and Sumy is facing heavy shelling by Russian forces.

    Sumy is approximately 48km from the Russian border – an area surrounded by conflict – and the bombings were reported to have resumed there at about 6am on Saturday morning.

    But it was learnt that the students had to risk stepping outside – despite continuous shelling – and in sub-zero temperatures to gather snow and ice for basic needs.

    “People had to use snow to cook food because there was no water,” said first-year medical student, Emmanuella Oiza.

    Oiza, 17, told The Nation that she and the other students could hear the bombings from their hiding place.

    She said: “The bombings are audible from everywhere in the city. We hide in bunkers.

    “We heard some sounds although it’s not near the hostel we’re in and due to the bomb the day before yesterday, our light and water were cut off.

    “We had to trek to another hostel which is closer to the city centre to get light because no light means no data connection.

    “In this hostel there’s light but no water and the population increased drastically today (Saturday) and yesterday (Friday). More than half of the population of hostel 4 and 5 are in this hostel which is hostel 3.

    “So it’s congested; no bed space, the toilets aren’t working so everywhere smells and it’s just tiring. It doesn’t help that it’s really cold and snowing at this point.”

    Oiza said many of the Nigerians are medical students while others are studying Computer Science, Management and other courses.

    Most of the others are from Tanzania (159), Ghana (150), Zimbabwe (18), Zambia (14), Morocco (12), Namibia (4), Angola (4), South Africa (2), and Botswana (1).

    Others are from Ethiopia, Rwanda, Ireland, India, Lebanon and Turkey.

    The Nation learnt that all routes out of Sumy are blocked with trains and buses no longer running. Roads and bridges have also been bombed, with fighting reported in the streets.

    But some are sometimes lucky to leave the city by taxis.

    Oiza said: “As for taxis, hardly anyone is willing to move. If they’re moving, they take only four or three people, and they’re calling outrageous prices for transportation just out of Sumy to Poltava, a neighbouring state.

    “Taxis was $500 or more per student. I have a friend that booked a cab on Thursday to move on Friday but when Friday came, the cab guy picked someone who paid extra money.”

    On Friday, 630 Nigerians including three infants stranded in Ukraine arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in two batches.

    This followed President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval of $8.5 million for the immediate evacuation of at least 5,000 Nigerians fleeing the Ukrainian crisis.

    But Oiza and her compatriots are unable to leave because of the violence.

    She appealed for help to leave the war-torn country, urging the Nigerian, Ukrainian and Russian governments to negotiate a green corridor so civilians can flee.

    “We’ve been waiting for the green corridor,” Oiza said.

    A Computer Science Masters student, Ojo Olajide, said soldiers appeared to be preventing people from leaving.

    Olajide said: “The situation of things is terrible. There’s no movement from Sumy to anywhere. There’s no water, light, food.

    The Ukrainian soldiers are not allowing us to leave even though we find a driver that’s willing to go.

    “They’re using us as war hostages, in my opinion, because I feel they should be the ones to help us pass easily.”

    A fifth-year medical student, Elkanemi Joseph, also pleaded for help in a video sent to The Nation.

    Joseph said: “The situation in Sumy is quite bad. Russian troops have shelled out the city. There’s no way out by road, railway and air. We’re currently in the bunker of our dormitory. I’m pleading with anyone out there to help my university secure a humanitarian corridor to safely evacuate all citizens – both foreigners and Ukrainians out of the city to a safe place. Please do all you can to help us.”

    In another video, six Nigerian students pleaded for help. “We’re running out of food and water. Our government is trying to evacuate us but we don’t know how long that is going to be for. Please help us,” they said.

    Receiving the 630, the director of consular and legal services, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Akinremi Bolaji, told journalists at the Abuja airport that the government was aware of the plight of Nigerians in Sumy.

    “We also still have 350 in Sumy College which has been cut off… as soon as we are through with the safe corridor, we will go for those ones,” Bolaji said.

    A lecturer in the Management Department, Dr. Tetyana Mayboroda, also appealed for safe passage for the students and civilians.

    “Air attack on Sumy!!! Substation targeted. Currently no light, water, electricity. We appeal for a green corridor for foreign students and civilians,” Mayboroda said in a post on her Twitter feed.

    Nigerians, others allege discrimination at Romanian, Hungarian, Polish borders

    A civil society group, Concerned Nigerians, has led hordes of Nigerians and other Africans to signed an online petition alleging massive discrimination against blacks fleeing Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion.

    The petition was titled ‘Stop discriminating, provide safe passages for Africans and People of Colour out of Ukraine.’

    “Numerous African refugees, mostly students in Ukraine, are being prevented from leaving to safety as Russian strikes continue in the nation, according to individuals attempting to cross borders to neighbouring countries,” the civil society group said.

    Thousands of young African students mostly from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Somalia and other countries studying in Ukraine, according to the petition,  claim they have been abandoned, with some taking to Twitter in recent days to tell their stories of desertion.

    “According to the students, certain locals are ‘prioritising’ Ukrainians, while black individuals face hostility or are refused passage at the border. On twitter, Ms. Sky said that under the present crisis, black people – particularly migrants – are more exposed to prejudice. ‘It is self-evident that we Africans are seen as lesser creatures,’ said Nze, a student who was forced to travel several hours to the Poland border. ‘The majority of Africans are still on their route to Lviv,’ he tweeted on Friday, beside a snapshot of the masses.

    “The scenario has fuelled concern among observers within the worldwide African and Caribbean diasporas that, even during times of conflict, black people suffer worse than white people.”

    The petition claimed that another Nigerian medical student at the Medyka-Shehyni border crossing between Poland and Ukraine stated she had waited seven hours to cross and also that border guards were stopping and sending black individuals to the back of the line, claiming they had to allow ‘Ukrainians’ through first.

    “Around 4,000 Nigerians are now studying in Ukraine, making up the country’s second-largest group of international students, after Moroccans, who account for 8,000 students. A number of Nigerian students and their families have gone to social media to express their worries about alleged racial discrimination by guards at crossings and security checkpoints, as well as a perceived lack of government assistance.”

    Calling on Nigerians and other Africans to sign petition calling on Ukrainian border authorities to put an end to the discriminatory evacuation tactics and grant everyone access to safety across the border by any means available, the group said: “Our demands: We call on Ukrainian border authorities to stop the discrimination against Africans and other people of colour and ensure safe passage for Africans and other marginalised people into neighbouring countries.

    “The African Union should issue a statement demanding the safety of Africans and arrange for airlifts of Africans in Ukraine or those that have fled to Poland and other countries. This is the time for them to rise up for Africa.

    “Finally, the Nigerian Government must as a matter of urgency, evacuate stranded Nigerian students in Ukraine and those that have fled to neighbouring countries.”

    Nigeria evacuates 807 stranded migrants

    A total of 807 stranded Nigerians have been evacuated by the Federal Government from war-raged Ukraine as at Saturday.

    The evacuees arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja in three flights.

    The first batch of 450 Nigerians stranded in Ukraine arrived aboard Max Air flight 747 at 7:10 a.m., on Friday through Romania.

    The second batch came aboard Air Peace Boeing 777-300 flight (APK7534) and arrived in Abuja with 183 passengers including kids through Warsaw.

    The third batch of 174 evacuees arrived at 11.50 p.m. on Friday through Hungary.

    Report says that many Nigerians and other nationals have fled Ukraine into neighbouring countries since Russia launched its full-scale invasion on its neighbour on Feb. 24.

    The Federal Government approved the release of 8.5 million dollars on Wednesday for the immediate evacuation of at least 5,000 Nigerians fleeing the Russian-Ukrainian conflict zone to Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.

    On Feb. 28, the Federal Government said Nigeria’s diplomatic mission had received 256 citizens from Ukraine at Bucharest, Hungary, Poland and Romania following the invasion.

    The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has been at the forefront of the evacuation.

    Bamise, the last born of the family, works as a Fashion Designer at Chevron Estate, Ajah.

    Bamise’s sibling, Elizabeth, who spoke with The Nation on Saturday, raised the alarm over alleged abduction of her sister by a driver identified as Nice Andrew Omininikoron of the Lagos Bus Services Limited.

    Although the Bus operators had said they were waiting for police outcome with the ongoing investigations. The driver, The Nation learnt, is at large.

    The police and the Lagos Bus Service Ltd have intensified search for the BRT driver in whose bus Bamise allegedly got missing.

    Elizabeth told The Nation on Saturday that Bamise’s whereabouts had been unknown since she boarded an LBSL bus, popularly known as BRT, at the Chevron area of Lekki en route to Oshodi on February 26.

    She stated that her missing sister was heading to the brother’s house at Ikotun to stay with the wife who was in ‘labour’.

    When The Nation visited the Oshodi terminal on Saturday, normal operations were ongoing with various buses loading commuters for various destinations.

    A staff at the terminal, who did not want to be named, told The Nation that the Oshodi bus terminal is where BRT buses usually load for various destinations and the family had been directed to Lagos Bus Services Limited where the case will be handled.

    He however noted that the terminal operators had escalated the matter because it has stained the terminal.

    “When the family came, they were angry and wanted to create a rancuor. I advised them to go to LBS where the matter will be handled, so they are on it. The police are investigating too”.

    The Nation learnt that Oluwabamise’s family had held a meeting with the Lagos Bus Service Ltd. (LBSL), operators of BRT on Wednesday, March 2, and the latter assured that efforts were being made to track down the driver.

    Police spokesman in Lagos, Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the incident, said it was under investigation.

    While the video has set many tongues wagging, the State Government on Saturday vowed to investigate the incident.

    On the keg containing petrol used as a souvenir in the viral video as seen by The Nation was the inscription which reads: ‘Erelu Okin Foundation Installation Party March 4, 2022’ with a picture of the Chidinma.

    Many social users described the action as dangerous to lives and property noting that highly inflammable liquid is too dangerous to be carried around.

    While some applauded this gesture and for her ingenuity in thinking out of the box.

    A social media user said: “The thought is commendable but this is very risky, what if there’s a smoker at the party”

    Another person said: “Very risky something, if DJ wire spark fire ehh, That place go turn to Ukraine.”

    Reacting, Erelu Okin on her Instagram page while giving her appreciation message, apologised for her choice of souvenirs at the party.

    She said: “I want to use this medium to apologise for the momentary indiscretion of bringing fuel souveniers into the hall.

    “My intent was just to show appreciation to my guests for turning up at my event at these hard times.

    “I have paused to reflect and truly apologise and I thank you all for your understanding and criticisms.”

    The battle for the national chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC) remains tough for ex-Narasawa State Governor Abdullahi Adamu despite his endorsement by President Muhammadu Buhari, The Nation learnt last night.

    His rivals for the position are said to have resolved to push ahead with their ambition and test their popularity during this month’s national convention of the party in Abuja.

    The aspirants have the backing of some APC governors for an open race for all as against imposition of the next chairman.

    President Buhari is expected to meet with the aspirants on his return from a two-week medical break.

    It is understood that Buhari may use the meeting to explain the reasons behind anointing Adamu, and assuage the tension in the party.

    However, the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) is yet to commence sales of forms to aspirants in what party sources said was part of the strategy to allow the ongoing consensus building on Adamu and others to reach an appreciable level.

    Apart from other offices, it was gathered that only one form may be sold for the office of national chairman to avoid rancour in the party and at the APC convention.

    Some governors, especially those from the North-Central, have been reaching out to Adamu’s rivals to accept Buhari’s decision on the former governor.

    The horse-trading on APC national chairman was in full swing last night.

    Those aspiring to lead the party from North-Central are the pioneer Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Senator Abdullahi Adamu; ex-Nasarawa  State Governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura;  ex-Benue State Governor George Akume;  Mallam Saliu Mustapha (Turaki Ilorin);Sen. Sani Mohammed Musa; a former Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Bawa Bwari;  and  the youngest of the aspirants,  Mohammed Etsu.

    Aspirants from other geopolitical zones include another former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Abdulaziz Yari; ex-Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff; ex-Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda; Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi and Chief Sunny Sylvester Monidafe.

    None of the 12 aspirants had come out at press time to step down for Adamu.

    It was also gathered that the aspirants had not been briefed on the alleged endorsement of Adamu either by the President or the governors.

    Investigation yesterday showed that all the aspirants were intensifying their campaign to lead the party.

    A top source said: “None of the aspirants is willing to step down and none has stepped down for Abdullahi Adamu.

    “Tension is growing in the party on a daily basis and there is clamour for an open contest by the aspirants in line with democratic tenets.

    “The truth is that the aspirants are going about their campaign oblivious of the purported endorsement of Adamu.

    “Nobody is talking to the aspirants. No one is telling them the opinion of the President. And Buhari is also not forthcoming. We are only reading his body language and third rated information from the Presidential Villa after any meeting.

    “We don’t even know whether Adamu’s candidature was designed by some forces looking for presidential ticket of the party for 2023 poll.

    “All the aspirants are in dilemma and they have decided to go on with their campaign.”

    When contacted, one of the aspirants, ex-Governor Al-Makura, said he was still going about his campaign.

    “I am contesting for the office of national chairman of APC. I don’t know of any endorsement of any aspirant, and I haven’t been told of any endorsement of any aspirant,” he said.

    Continuing, he said: “The process for the election of a new national chairman has not commenced because the sale of form is yet to begin.

    “As a founding member of APC, I will want to see how this great party progresses. I owe it a duty to respect the guidelines of the party.

    “APC is a wonderful party that believes in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which promotes democracy.

    “It is not true that I have been asked to step down for anybody. This campaign has taken me one year and it indicates that I will be successful.

    “I am still campaigning as I talk to you.”

    The Director-General of Tanko Al-Makura Campaign Organisation, Dominic Alancha, in a separate interview, said: “President Buhari is a true democrat and will not do anything that does not conform with democratic norms.

    “The constitution of our party stipulates that in a situation where the party arrives at a consensus, a yes or no vote will be called for.

    “So, knowing President Buhari as a true democrat, he will follow the due process to arriving at a consensus.

    “Therefore, for us as a campaign organization, we are waving the purported endorsement aside with a simple wave of the hand.

    “Distinguished Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura is very much ready to present himself for an elective convention come March 26, and I am 100 per cent sure he will emerge victorious as the next national chairman of our great party APC, given his competence and capacity in party administration.”

    Also speaking, a leading chairmanship aspirant, Saliu Mustapha (Turaki Ilorin) said: “I am still in the race. I am not aware of a consensus candidate. The party has not communicated to me officially about a consensus candidate.”

    The head of media of Saliu Mustapha Campaign Organisation, Dapo Okubanjo, said: “Consultations are still ongoing over the issue of consensus as it relates to the forthcoming national convention. So, as far as we are concerned, nothing is cast in stone yet.

    “However, as a party man, Mallam Saliu Mustapha expects that once a decision is taken on a matter as important as that, there are official channels through which they are communicated to concerned parties.

    “And until that is done, we believe that the race is still open to all contenders who show interest in being the next national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

    Another chairmanship aspirant, Sylvester Monidafe, told our correspondent as follows: “I am going ahead to contest. I am not stepping down for anybody.”

    A source in the campaign organisation of Senator Mohammed Sani Musa said: “Senator Musa is a committed party man. We await President Mohammadu Buhari’s pronouncement on the issue of consensus.

    “We are in the race and we are ready to abide by the position of Mr. President.”

    Mohammed Saidu Etsu, a chairmanship aspirant from Niger State, dismissed the purported anointing of Adamu.

    He asked all progressive minds in the country to erase from their thoughts the idea of an ‘anointed’ candidate, saying that he was forging ahead with his own campaign because “I am confident that I will come out victorious.”

    Etsu said: “We have our machinery on ground across all the 36 states and we will continue with our political campaigns. These are the things that we are ready for at the 26th March convention.”

    A governor who was reacting to the development in the party said: “Most of the governors do not want imposition of Adamu. They are agitating that all aspirants should meet in the field and allow APC members to determine their fate at the convention.

    “This is my position. I believe democracy must take its course.

    “The governors are however afraid of the consequences of rejecting the choice of Adamu.

    “The way the game is now, we keep mute when we meet with the President. But when we leave the Villa, we say our minds.

    “It has got to a ridiculous extent that we are now suspicious of one another because we don’t know who would stab us in the back. That is the danger of not allowing democracy to work.”

    Another governor said the cloudy situation has caused the Caretaker Committee to delay sales of forms to aspirants.

    The North-West governor said: “The Caretaker Committee is slowing down to enable the President, governors and APC leaders to build a consensus on the new set of leaders, which can ensure a hitch-free convention. They are applying wisdom to save the party from crisis.

    “We have not resolved the zoning formula for offices because we go forward and backward on it. There is no party leadership which can sell party offices’ forms in a chaotic situation.

    “Other than the wish of the President on Abdullahi Adamu, there is no consensus on him, even in Nasarawa State. We need to address the issue of the national chairman of APC as soon as possible.”

    Responding to a question, the governor said: “In a presidential system like ours, it is difficult to resist the choice of President Muhammadu Buhari.

    “But he needs to listen to alternative views because running a party is beyond the chairman alone.

    “We want fairness, equity and justice for all members in the party.”

    A party source said: “The ongoing consensus building on the next national chairman and other officers is slowing down the sale of forms.

    “We want a hitch-free national convention and we need to consult widely.

    “After unanimity of opinion, the party may end up selling a nomination form for the office of national chairman to only the preferred candidate.”

    A top source said the President was aware of the intrigues in APC.

    But he said Buhari would address certain issues, including the choice of a new chairman before the convention.

    The source added: “I am aware Buhari has demanded a security report on all the aspirants.

    “I have got to know that he has plans to meet with all the aspirants before the convention to assuage tension.

    “He is likely to meet with them after he returns from his two-week vacation.

    “No one told him before he demanded the list of all aspirants from the Chairman of the CECPC, Governor Mai Mala Buni.

    Meanwhile, a youth group in the party, APC Youth Stakeholders Forum, yesterday kicked against consensus candidacy during the national convention of the party.

    It said party leaders should emerge through an elective process where all delegates at the convention are made to vote.

    The youth stormed the national secretariat of the party to protest any imposition of candidates under the guise of consensus arrangement.

    Addressing newsmen at the end of the peaceful protest at the party headquarters in Abuja, one of the conveners of the forum, Malam Yunusa Ahmadu Yusuf, said party members should be allowed to determine who leads them.

    “Our demand here is that party stakeholders should be allowed to make their input.

    “Members should be allowed to say what they want, who would lead them, how, when, where, and that is what we have settled for and that is why we are here today,” he said.

    When told that a national chairmanship aspirant had agreed to accept anyone endorsed by the President, another youth leader, Muktar Akoshi, said President Buhari is a democrat, “he will not impose any candidate.”

    He added: “The President believes in the supremacy of the party. So if any individual came out to say we would abide by what the President has said, yes, everybody will give Mr. President the respect of being the President of the Federal Republic and also abide by anything he said. But we are sure that the President knows the definition of democracy.

    “He knows that it is only good to allow people to choose who governs them.”

    The monarchs said Tinubu’s antecedent stood him out as the next person to take Nigeria to the place of her dream.

    They spoke separately when Tinubu visited traditional rulers in the three senatorial districts of the state.

    Oba Fredrick Obateru-Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugboland, who spoke at Okitipupa, headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government, said Tinubu has the charisma and ability to turn the country’s fortune around.

    He said all traditional rulers in Ondo South have blessed and endorsed him for the number one job.

    In Akure, the Ondo State capital, Chairman, Ondo State Council of Obas, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II, said Tinubu would transform the country technologically and in other sectors.

    Oba Aladetoyinbo described Tinubu as a maker of men even those he rarely knew.

    He said the prayers of the obas in Ondo Central Senatorial District would ensure Tinubu becomes  the next president.

    On his part, Tinubu informed the monarchs that he was running for the presidency because he is seriously bothered about the development of Nigeria.

    Tinubu stated that Nigeria would compete favourably with Russia in the exploration of oil and gas if its natural resources were properly harnessed

    He said he knew the problem of the country and if given the opportunity, Nigeria would be ranked among the best nations in the world.

    “I don’t run away from battle. I am very particular and passionate about democracy. During MKO’s  time, we tried but we could not get it. When they came to meet us to support Buhari, we sought  your support  and Buhari became the president.

    “I have gone to inform Buhari that I want to contest, particularly now that it is remaining few months for him. It is not a matter of fight, the constitution stipulated it. Buhari told me to go ahead and declare.

    “I informed Buhari so that people would  not say who did I inform before taking the decision. I am the most qualified to become the president. I will ensure that our children get employed, there will be industries and all- round development across the country.

    “Ondo State is abundant in natural resources and Akeredolu is really trying. The job of a president is all about the brain and I have it. Inform everyone that I want to contest. I will make Nigeria to be more developed than Lagos.

    “It is a pity that ordinary brake pads Nigeria cannot produce. I will turn Nigeria around for good. All I seek are your prayers and support for me to become the president. It is your son that wants to contest and I’m that your son.

    “Lagos State was the worst state in Africa when I became governor. We were generating megre revenue then but we did our best then. Look at Lagos now, it generates over N40 billion in revenue

    “Division is one of the problems in Nigeria too but there is no division in Lagos because any tribe or religion is welcome as they can contest and win elections and that is why Lagos is thriving.

    “I am here to seek the blessing of our royal fathers for my presidential ambition because I know where the problems are and if given the opportunity in 2023, Nigeria will be ranked among the best nations in the world.

    “I am imploring all eligible voters to get their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) revalidated for them to exercise their civic responsibilities,” Tinubu said.

    A total of 630 Nigerians including three infants stranded in Ukraine arrived at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, on Friday in two batches.

    The first batch, comprising 450 evacuees who are mostly students, landed at the private jet terminal of the airport by 7:10 am from Romania via a Max Air flight.

    The second batch comprised 180 returnees and three infants.  They arrived via Air Peace from Poland.

    They were received by government officials and are expected to undergo documentation after which they will head home and self-isolate in line with the COVID-19 protocols.

    A statement by the Head of Media and Public Relations, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abuja, by Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, says the Federal Government on Friday gave all returnees from Ukraine $100 (about N48,000) to ameliorate their sufferings.

    Balogun, however, said that the evacuees from Poland could not return on Thursday because their flight was rescheduled for Friday, to arrive Abuja at 2.30p.m

    Some of the evacuees from Poland recounted their ordeal escaping from Ukraine. They relived their experiences in a chat with newsmen before departing the Warsaw International Airport, Poland.

    One of them, Joseph Chikwado said what was most important to him was his successful crossing from Ukraine into Poland amidst all the challenges as he looked forward to returning to Nigeria.

    “It was a very bad experience trying to get across the borders from Ukraine into Poland because of the weather.

    “It was very bad and very cold, very long distance, no vehicle to convey us to the borders, we got there pretty late we had to find a way to warm ourselves.

    “We are happy we are safe now and getting back to our country, I feel relieved,” Mr Chikwado said.

    A student of Dnipro Medical Institute, Ukraine, Kella Wengu, said she was lucky to be on the flight, explaining that the cancelled flight of March 3, gave her the opportunity to make the trip.

    She explained that she would have missed the flight as she did not register with the Nigerian Embassy in Poland upon arrival.

    “Leaving Ukraine was very tough. I had left my city for over two weeks to go to the capital because there were warnings on the invasion from Russia on social media.

    “Coming here, I do not know how I got here, I was going to miss this flight because I did not go to the Embassy to write my name, I got here and was told the plane was filled up, I waited to see if any opportunity arises.

    “It is mixed feelings for me, I am not quite happy I am leaving school, Ukraine is my home now because since I arrived it has been great.

    “But at the same time, I am safe, I am going home to my loved ones, thank you for the opportunity.”

    Another student, Eniola Badejo, appreciated the government’s efforts, but appealed for more information and better coordination as the exercise continued.

    “We thank the Federal Government of Nigeria because it has been really tiring, we went through a lot of stress, many of us travelled all the way and we have barely slept.

    “We want them to give us more information because we were not given enough information.

    “I am just happy to be going back to my family, I feel happy and grateful that I am going back to my parents,” Ms Badejo said.

    Nigeria’s Ambassador to Poland, Christian Ugwu appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for his swift intervention and release of funds to get all stranded Nigerians in Ukraine back home.

    Mr Ugwu said the embassy in Poland was on top of the situation and had successfully coordinated the first batch who were being evacuated already.

    The ambassador, however, urged all Nigerians who had made it to Poland to ensure they got ready to be evacuated home rather than remain in Poland.

    “We have been trying our best to convince the Nigerian students that there is no need to remain here in Poland to constitute nuisance and that the Federal Government is trying their best to make them comfortable.

    “And that is why they have made provisions for them to be comfortable in hotels and provided aircraft to convey them back home.

    “For those who refused to go, they will be remaining at their own risk.

    “We advise parents to try as much as possible to counsel their wards and children that they should come back, when the crisis in Ukraine subsides they can return.

    “Remaining in Poland will be a difficult thing for them.

    “It is kudos to Nigeria that the President has granted an urgent flight evacuation to these students, he has sent funds and things are moving accordingly.

    “And the Nigerian students from Ukraine are happy that they are being treated well and being taken care of,” Mr Ugwu said.

    Amb. Bolaji Akinremi, leader of the evacuation exercise from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a chat with newsmen on arrival said:  “There are Nigerians that are left behind because they did not come yesterday.  So some of them thought the flight was not going to come.  So by the time their colleagues were telling them they were already on their way, the reality dawned on them.

    “We appeal through the media that parents should tell their children to come. Poland gave them 15 days grace.  They didn’t have visa to Poland but they allowed them and at the same time, you must not abuse that privilege.  The 15 days was going to lapse very soon and they wouldn’t know what will be the next step. So we told them, if you are ready, we would pick you. We had more than 50 that joined us later but we could only take about 25 out of that.”

    A Permanent Secretary, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gabriel Aduda, made this known on Friday while receiving some Nigerian student escapees from Ukraine at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.

    He said that the Federal Government was already talking with the government of Poland, Greece, Romania and Hungary to see if the students in their fifth and sixth medical year could go back to the universities in those countries to complete their studies.

    Other flights are expected to arrive in the country in the coming days as nations battle to evacuate their citizens. Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier said about 5, 000 Nigerians are eligible for evacuation from the warring region. The country will spend $8.5m on the exercise.

    Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that his administration would continue to defend the interest of Nigerians wherever they may be.

    Buhari made this assertion Thursday in Nairobi, Kenya at a Townhall Meeting with a group of Nigerians resident in the country.

    According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, Buhari said his administration had risen up to its responsibility of looking out for distressed Nigerians and their welfare, wherever they are.

    His words: “On our part as a government, we shall continue to defend the interests of all Nigerians wherever they may be. We have demonstrated this over time, as we have had cause to evacuate our citizens in harm’s way abroad.

    “We did it in Libya, South Africa and we have just commenced doing the same in Ukraine, where thousands of our citizens, especially students, are trapped by the on-going war between Russia and Ukraine,” the President said.

    He commended the diasporans in Kenya for the unity that exists among them and peace with their host communities, urging them to respect the laws and be good ambassadors of Nigeria.

    President Buhari who was represented at the event by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama, reiterated that it was the determination of the current administration to forge a partnership with the ‘Ambassadors-at large’ towards building the country together that led to the establishment of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

    He expressed delight that the commission had been engaging the diasporans and had also come up with laudable programmes that would appeal to them.

    According to the President, as part of his diasporan agenda, “we expect your willingness to ‘give back’ to Nigeria, some of your resources, talents, skills and global exposure in the development of our great country, Nigeria.”

    He, therefore, encouraged the ambassadors to key into the programmes of NiDCOM especially the Nigerian Diaspora Investment Trust Fund whose mandate is holistic for all Nigerians abroad adding that the platform would assist them to expeditiously contribute to the development of their fatherland.

    The President assured them that the administration is forging ahead with the provision of critical infrastructure for the collective prosperity of all despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and activities of terrorists.

    The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, appreciated the ambassadors for honouring the invitation, urging them to register with the Commission in order to have an up- to-date database of them for easy interface, adding that working with them, the Nigerian government will build the country of our dreams.

    Dr Nicholas Ozor, the president of Nigerians in Diaspora (Kenya) on behalf of the diasporans expressed his appreciation to the President for always meeting with them when he is in the country as this boosts their morale.

    UN Rights Council okays probe of Russian invasion

    The UN Human Rights Council Friday, voted to launch an investigation into violations committed in Moscow’s Ukraine war.

    “The message to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has been clear: You’re isolated on a global level and the whole world is against you,” Ukrainian ambassador Yevheniia Filipenko told reporters after the overwhelming vote.

    AFP reports that thirty-two of the council’s 47 members voted to establish the highest-level probe possible, in a bid to hold perpetrators responsible.

    Only Russia itself and Eritrea voted against, while 13 countries abstained, including Moscow’s traditional backers China, Venezuela, and Cuba.

    The heavy blow to Russia came after the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday issued its own powerful rebuke, with a 141-5 vote to deplore Moscow’s invasion and demand an immediate withdrawal.

    The council in Geneva also condemned “in the strongest possible terms the human rights violations and abuses and violations of international humanitarian law resulting from the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine.”

    The text, presented by Kyiv, called for the “swift and verifiable withdrawal of Russian Federation troops and Russian-backed armed groups from the entire territory of Ukraine.”

    Most importantly, Friday’s vote opens the way to create an independent international commission of inquiry — the highest level probe that can be ordered by the council — “to investigate all alleged violations and abuses… in the context of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine.”

    Soyinka, 167 other Nobel Laureates demand immediate end to Ukraine invasion

    Prof. Wole Soyinka and 167 other Nobel Laureates have called for an immediate halt to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

    The Nobel Laureates, in an open letter, voiced their support for the Ukrainian people and the free and independent state of Ukraine as it faced Russian aggression.

    “In a move that recalls the infamous attack of Nazi Germany on Poland in 1939 (using similar tricks of feigned provocation) and on the Soviet Union in 1941, the government of the Russian Federation, led by President Putin, has launched an unprovoked military aggression — nothing else but a war — against its neighbor, Ukraine.

    “We choose our words carefully here, for we do not believe the Russian people have a role in this aggression. We join in condemning these military actions and President Putin’s essential denial of the legitimacy of Ukraine’s existence,” they said.

    According to them, there is always a peaceful way to resolve disputes, saying that the Russian invasion blatantly violated the United Nations Charter, which says “All members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.”

    “It ignores the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, which obligated Russia and others to respect the sovereignty, independence, and existing borders of Ukraine.

    “Russia’s security concerns can be addressed within the framework of the UN Charter, the 1975 Helsinki Final Act, and the 1990 Paris Charter. To make war, as President Putin and his collaborators have done, is an unwarranted, bloody, and unproductive way to a future,” they added.

    The Nobel Laureates said the Russian invasion would stain the international reputation of the Russian state for decades to come and that it would pose barriers to its economy and inflict hardships on its population.

    They said the sanctions imposed would restrict the ease of movement of its talented and hardworking people in the world.

    “Why raise this fence between Russia and the world now? Hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers, Russian soldiers, and Ukrainian civilians, including children, have died already. It’s so sad, so unnecessary. We gather in this appeal to call upon the Russian government to stop its invasion of Ukraine and withdraw its military forces from Ukraine.

    “We respect the calm and the strength of the Ukrainian people. We are with you. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all, Ukrainians and Russians, who have died and been injured already. May peace come to this piece of our beautiful world,” the letter stated.
