  • Misgivings in Presidency over N1 trillion increase by NASS

Misgivings in Presidency over N1 trillion increase by NASS

The Presidency is not in agreement with the National Assembly over the legislature’s decision to increase the estimate for the 2022 national budget by N1 trillion, The Nation learnt yesterday.

The increase has sparked misgivings at the seat of power, sources said, with the Federal Government already weighing its options on the development.

The President, on October 7, presented a bill of N16,391,023,917,692 to the National Assembly.

The lawmakers, however, passed the budget on Wednesday after increasing it from N16,391,023,917,692 to N17,126,873,917,692.

The N17. 1 trillion bill was sent to the President yesterday for assent.

Entitled “Appropriation Bill 2022,” the budget was forwarded to the President by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Ojo Olatunde Amos, with a covering letter.

The letter reads: “In consonance with the Provisions of the Acts Authentication Act Cap. A2, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, I wish, with due respect, to forward to Your Excellency, the authenticated copies of Appropriation Bill, 2022 for your consideration and assent.

“After Your Excellency’s assent, one copy of the signed Bill should be retained in your office while the other two are to be returned for our further action, please. With my highest regards.”

A top source, however, said the Federal Government would look at the budget, especially allocations either adjusted or added to it.

The source said: “The government submitted a proposal to the National Assembly and the lawmakers within their constitutional powers increased it by N1 trillion. This is on the high side.

“Now that the budget has been passed, the government will take another look at the estimates before President Buhari assents it. We will pay attention to areas where the budget was jacked up.

“The Federal Government may not agree with the lawmakers on the increase but it will engage them before the President signs the bill into law.

“The National Assembly did not put into consideration the fact that we have limited resources to fund the budget. The alternative is taking loans to finance it. Yet, the mood of the nation does not support fresh loans.

“It is also our duty to make the National Assembly know if the budget new oil price benchmark of $62  per barrel set by the lawmakers is realistic or not. You know the Executive based its projections on $57 per barrel.

“So, we have to open up to the National Assembly on what we think are the ways out. Since the President is now in receipt of the bill, the Executive will quickly study it.”

After passing the bill, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said in part:   ” [And] we are very optimistic that Mr. President will assent to the bill, like he did for 2020 and 2021, so that by January 2022, the implementation of the budget 2022 will commence by the grace of God.

“We have seen the benefits of passing and assenting to the budget in good time, especially when we had to fight COVID-19.

“The consequence of the implementation of the budget in 2021 and 2020 was very clear.

“For us to come out of the recession that we found ourselves in the previous period, we must have had the fortune of passing the budget and getting Mr. President to sign in time.

“So, we believe that the economy of Nigeria and Nigerian businesses especially will continue to benefit from the passage of the appropriation bills in time and the assent by Mr. President, accordingly.

“We wish to make it clear that our desire is to provide legislations for the peace, order and good government of our country.”

Lawan, during a visit to the President on Thursday night, had said Buhari would sign the appropriation bill this week.

The Senate President, who met with the President alongside House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, said Buhari personally invited them for the purpose of thanking the National Assembly through its leaders for the members’ services to the nation.

He said: “Mr. President invited the honourable speaker and me to come so he could thank the National Assembly through us for working so hard to pass the 2022 appropriation bill, which will be brought to Mr. President for his assent by next week by the grace of God.

“We’re very optimistic. In fact, we’re very sure that Mr President will sign the bill into an act of the National Assembly next week by the grace of God. And this is the way we should always work together. This is our third appropriation bill to be passed before we go on Christmas break.

“It has shown how important the passage and the assent to the budget before the end of the year have been. You will recall that we were in two or three different recessions, but because public expenditure, which normally drives our economy as a developing economy, has always brought that advantage, made the availability of funds into the economy. And we can come out of the recess periods.

“So, I want to thank Mr President for thanking the National Assembly, because this is essentially the reason why he invited the Speaker and I to say that National Assembly, thank you very much for working with us for making this budget 2022 pass in good time as you did for 2020 and 2021.”

Detained female soldier regains freedom after COAS’ intervention

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Faruk Yahaya, has ordered immediate release of the romantic female soldier who publicly accepted the proposal of a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kwara State.

The Director Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed the release of the embattled soldier.

The COAS, however, maintained that the erring soldier be strongly reprimanded against engaging in any kind of act that contravenes the military code of conduct for its officers and men.

Lt-Gen Yahaya said the female soldier should be released to enjoy Christmas with family and friends.

A video of a male corps member proposing to a female soldier at the Yikpata Orientation Camp of the NYSC in Kwara State recently surfaced online and went viral.

In one of the video clips, some corps members are seen having a discussion at a venue believed to be the parade ground of the orientation camp.

The discussion is still on when the yet-to-be-identified corps member, who is seen holding a ring, goes down on one knee and pops the question to the soldier with the lady accepting the proposal.

The corps member goes on to insert the ring in the finger of the visibly excited soldier amid cheers from others at the scene.

In another clip, the pair are seen sharing lovey-dovey moments. The corps member is seen wearing the lady’s military cap as she stands directly behind him.

They thereafter share a kiss to the delight of other corps members filming the incident.

There were reports after the incident that the soldier was detained by the Army; an action that received wide condemnation on social media.

Military Sources however said the soldier has not served the mandatory three years service as stipulated by the Armed Forces Act before marriage.

The COAS, however, appealed for mercy for the female soldier, which may not be unconnected with the fact that the Christmas season presents an opportunity for persons who erred to be given clemency.

“The COAS, in his wisdom, believes that the young female soldier will retrace her steps and show remorse for engaging in acts that negate military ethical codes by the time she is pardoned and forgiven.

“Hence, he has been appealing for her to be pardoned. This is what he has been doing behind the scene, in the last few days,” said a senior military officer, who didn’t want to be mentioned.

  • North now fully in the grip of evil, says Kukah

North now fully in the grip of evil, says Kukah

The Catholic Bishop  of Sokoto Diocese, Dr. Matthew Kukah, yesterday expressed fresh frustration at the unrelenting security challenge in the north where he said a  “catalogue of unprecedented cruelty has been unleashed on innocent citizens.”

He feared the region could soon become Arewanistan in view of the persistent killings.

“In their sleep, on their farmlands, in their markets, or even on the highway, innocent citizens have been mowed down and turned into burnt offerings to gods of evil,” an angry Kukah said in his Christmas message entitled ‘A nation still in search of truth and vindication’.

“Communities have been turned into gulags of misery, death, pain and perfidy. We must move quickly before Arewa, our beloved Arewa, descends into Arewanistan,” he added.

Kukah recalled how he was heavily slammed in parts of the north when he first criticized the federal government’s handling of the security situation in that part of the country last year.

He said: “At about this time last year when I raised the alarm about the perilous state of affairs in northern Nigeria, all kinds of accusations were levelled against me, especially by my northern brethren.

“When the Catholic Bishops protested openly against the killings of our people in March 2020, we were accused of acting against government with religious motives being imputed to our noble intentions. Now, we are fully in the grip of evil.

“Today, a feeling of vindication only saddens me as I have watched the north break into a cacophony of quarrelsome blame games over our tragic situation.”

Urging President Muhammadu Buhari to speak on the situation, Kukah said: “Tales and promises about planned rescues have since deteriorated into mere whispers. Nothing expresses the powerlessness of the families like the silence of state at the federal level.

“Today, after over seven years, our over one hundred Chibok Girls are still marooned in the ocean of uncertainty.

“Over three years after, Leah Sharibu is still unaccounted for. Students of the Federal Government College, Yauri, and children from Islamiyya School, Katsina are still in captivity. This does not include hundreds of other children whose captures were less dramatic.

“We also have lost count of hundreds of individuals and families who have been kidnapped and live below the radar of publicity. We have before us a government totally oblivious to the cherished values of the sacredness of life.

“The silence of the federal government only feeds the ugly beast of complicity in the deeds of these evil people who have suspended the future of entire generations of our children.

“Every day, we hear of failure of intelligence, yet, those experts who provide intelligence claim that they have always done their duty diligently and efficiently.

“Does the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria not believe that he owes parents and citizens answers as to where our children are and when they are coming home?

“Does the President of Nigeria not owe us an explanation and answers as to when the abductions, kidnappings, brutality, senseless, and endless massacres of our citizens will end? When will our refugees from Cameroon, Chad or Niger return home? We need urgent answers to these questions.

“While I commend the efforts of our security men and women, I call on the President, in collaboration with the governors who are doing their best to preserve and protect their people to develop a more honest, open and robust strategy for ending the humiliation of our people and restoring social order to our people. We have borne enough humiliation as communities and a country.”

Kukah paid tribute to several northern Christians who, he said, have either been killed or kidnapped for their faith.

His words: “When Michael Nnadi, our teenage Seminarian from Sokoto Diocese, stared down the nozzle of the guns of terrorists and called them to repentance, he knew he was signing his signature with the blood of martyrdom.

“When Mrs. Bolanle Ataga, a Kaduna-based housewife of a medical doctor, defied the evil hands of the head of her captors who sought to violate her honour in exchange for freedom, she knew she was signing her signature with the blood of martyrdom.

“When Lawan Andimi, leader of the Christian community in Michika, Adamawa State stretched out his neck and was slaughtered by his abductors because of his faith, he knew that his blood would flow into the ocean of those martyrs who have gone before him.

“When our dear Leah Sharibu raised her voice against the advice of her young Muslim friends who loved her dearly and wanted her to deny being a Christian, she, like Jesus, acted in defiance but she knew what awaits her in a new Jerusalem, the capital of martyrdom.

“Their heroic witnesses re-echo the defiance of the Apostles who said: We must obey God rather than men.”

He asked religious leaders to stand firm in the face of what he called the injustice in the country, saying: “When the politicians embark on outright favouritism or nepotism, we must not be carried away by the belief that our religion is being favoured.

“Religious leaders must stand together and condemn lack of fairness to any group because the powerful and the powerless all need to be saved.”

On the polity, especially the Electoral Amendment Bill which President Buhari recently declined to sign into law, Kukah asked the National Assembly to “quickly take notice of the observations made by the President on the issues of Direct or Indirect Primaries and return the Bill to the President for assent.

“I believe that the President’s heart is still in the right place and we should focus on the serious issues,” he said.

He told the youths to “seize the moment by coming out to register and be ready to vote.

“Endsars protests and the aftermath should be a mere punctuation mark in the sentences and chapters of our struggle for a better society.

“There is a lot to live for in this country. There is a lot for our Youth to dream about.

“The spirit of Christmas should be seen as a spirit of renewal. Be courageous, because we shall turn the corner together.”

COVID-19: Presidential aide Garba Shehu tests positive, in isolation

    • I’m not infected, says Lai Mohammed

    • Govt ramps up testing at State House

    • FCT bans nightclubs, related gatherings

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, has proceeded on self-isolation arising from COVID-19 infection.

Shehu personally confirmed his health status to The Nation yesterday.

This came as the authorities of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) expressed worries over the refusal of many Abuja residents to adopt simple measures that offer protection against COVID-19.

The President’s SSA said on the phone that he had been diagnosed with the infection and was consequently advised to self-isolate.

He said he was taking the prescribed medication.

But he said he was unaware if any other State House official had been diagnosed with COVID-19

“What is true is that I know about myself that I’m self-isolating and taking my medication, but I know of no other case,” he said in reaction to a report by news blogger, Premium Times, that COVID-19 has hit several officials at the State House.

Information Minister Lai Mohammed, one of the government officials mentioned by Premium Times as having the virus, dismissed the report as fake news.

Mohammed said he was at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for different official engagements including the federal executive meeting and the swearing in of Mr. Muazu Sambo as new minister of state, works and housing, all of which were covered by the media.

“Does it make sense that I could be in self-isolation and attend those events for three consecutive days?” the minister asked when contacted by The Nation last night.

Another Presidency source said it was also not true that State House Permanent Secretary Alhaji Tijani Umar who was named in the report was infected.

“Even the Permanent Secretary they included, the man tested negative for COVID-19. He personally told me this week. Where they got their information from, I don’t know.

“A couple of people in his (Permanent Secretary) might have tested positive, but not him,” the source said.

The source added: “The CSO, ADC and others they mentioned, it is only if they disclose their status to you in person that you will be able to confirm that. I have not heard of any such thing about any other person apart from Mallam (Shehu).”

FCTA worried by low compliance with COVID-19 protocols in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) yesterday expressed worries that residents of Abuja were not complying enough with the COVID–19 protection enforcement measures.

The Secretary of FCTA Health and Human Services Secretariat, Dr Abubakar Tafida, said in a statement that the cases so far on December 24, “are 2,591, which is 1,028 per cent increase over the 252 cases confirmed in November 2021.”

”In addition, hospital admissions for COVID-19 have increased by over 634 per cent from 35 in November to 222 so far in December.

” Also, the number of active cases being treated in the treatment centres and at private homes rose from 130 at the end of November to today’s figure of 2,352 (1,809 per cent) increase.

” About 25 per cent of all cases over the months were between 30 to 39 year olds. Unfortunately, all COVID-19 deaths in December 2021 have occurred in unvaccinated persons,” Tafida said.

He said that the current upsurge in number of COVID-19 cases was most likely being driven by the Omicron variant that “is much more transmissible than the other variants”.

He said that the FCTA’s deployment of more resources, health workers, funds and materials to control the disease could only be successful if the residents of the FCT played their parts during this festive period with increased social interactions and travels.

The secretary asked all residents of the FCT to take action to protect themselves and their loved ones against the pandemic.

”As such it is critical that scientifically proven actions that prevent the COVID-19 disease must become our habit.

“Consequently, during the Christmas and New year celebration period, the residents of the FCT are urged to practice the following measures as advised by the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, which will be enforced by FCTA.

”Any gathering in excess of 50 people must be done in open spaces. Street parties are discouraged. All night clubs and related activities are banned during this period.

”Indoor religious congregation should be limited to 50 per cent capacity with full compliance to public health social measures such as physical distancing (two metres apart) and use of face masks.”

Tafida said the use of facemask and hand sanitiser for both the vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals at all times while in public spaces should be strictly adhered to.

He said the administration had continued to put in place measures to control the increase in cases and prevent deaths, in conjunction with the Federal authorities and developmental partners.

Tafida said that scientific data had shown that a very important tool to control the pandemic was herd immunity, which was only possible when at least 70 to 80 per cent of the FCT populace was fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

” Thus the ongoing vaccination programme that aims to vaccinate at least 1.5 million residents of the FCT by Jan. 31, 2022, using 283 vaccination teams located in public and private hospitals, markets, religious places, shopping malls and other locations with high human volume.

”As good members of the FCT community, we must be cautious, vigilant and adhere to the government’s advisory on tackling the COVID-19 pandemic.

” Nobody is certain that they will survive if infected or have mild or severe symptoms. Also, let us note that, even symptom-free individuals can still pass on COVID-19 to others who may develop serious complications or even death.”

He urged residents to avoid crowded places, wear face mask, wash hands frequently, saying that the administration had put in place the machinery to enforce all non-pharmacological COVID-19 prevention measures.

  • Buhari to Service Chiefs: Crush Boko Haram, ISWAP before 2023

Buhari to Service Chiefs: Crush Boko Haram, ISWAP before 2023

The service chiefs yesterday got a fresh marching order from President Muhammadu Buhari to crush the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), which has overtaken Boko Haram in the North East insurgency, before he leaves office in 2023.

Buhari handed down the order at a meeting of the Security Council in Abuja 24 hours after the group rained rockets close to the Maiduguri airport shortly before the President arrived in the city.

Several people were killed by the rockets.

Police Inspector General Alkali Baba Usman said some of the masterminds of the attack have been eliminated.

And in his Christmas message yesterday, the President told Nigerians to invoke the “indomitable spirit in us and see the present order of things as a phase that will also pass, just like other unsavoury situations in the nation’s history.”

The Nation gathered that Buhari, during the Security Council meeting, directed that no inch of Nigerian territory should be ceded to terrorists.

Buhari wondered why ISWAP insurgents kept striking from the same corridor unchecked and told the Service Chiefs to be prepared to win the war against insurgency before he leaves office.

The President’s second term expires in May 2023.

Buhari said he meant what he told the troops in Maiduguri on the need to rout Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.

A top source, who spoke in confidence with one of our correspondents, said the meeting was a “frank appraisal session.”

“No one was happy with how the ISWAP insurgents struck on Thursday and took the shine off Mr. President’s visit.

“The President could not understand the recurring assaults from the same corridor or axis,” the source said.

“We had a similar incident on December 4. And before the President’s visit, a security /intelligence evaluation was done with a caveat that there should be a subsidiary operation to cordon off this axis.

“Yet the insurgents fired rockets from the same axis and targeted the Maiduguri International Airport.

“Although the President did not betray emotions during his visit, he was certainly not happy with the situation of things.”

Responding to a question, the source said: “The President asked the Service Chiefs not to give terrorists, especially the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), a breathing space. He directed that no inch of Nigerian territory must be occupied by terrorists.

“He warned against the reversal of the gains the military has made. He also sought a more proactive campaign to rout the insurgents, whether Boko Haram or ISWAP.

“He said his administration is prepared to win the war against insurgency.”

The Nation also gathered that top Army Generals were yesterday deployed in Borno State to “review the situation and boost the war against the insurgents.

Another source added: “Many Army Generals arrived in Borno State on Friday to review the situation and improve on the operational strategies.”

Buhari at Christmas: How we can end this unsavoury security situation.

The President in his Christmas message as Nigeria joins the rest of the world today to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ asked Nigerians to invoke the “indomitable spirit in us and see the present order of things as a phase that will also pass, just like other unsavoury situations in the nation’s history.”

Similar goodwill messages came from Senate President Ahmed Lawan, House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, state governors, the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Dr.Ignatius Kaigama, who said the hearts of Nigerians are heavy with suffering arising from the situation in the country.

Buhari said Nigeria is yet to overcome its security challenges “despite the remarkable successes generally recorded.”

He said: “Our courageous security forces, bolstered by the necessary support from this administration, daily confront the wicked ones amongst us, who continue to threaten the peace of the land.

“Recently, during the meeting with fellow Heads of State of the ECOWAS, I discussed the need to intensify efforts to jointly confront this menace causing instability in our sub-region.

“I am confident that with the renewed commitment and empowerment of our committed security personnel, all these issues which inflict pain and trauma on us will soon be history.

“Let us utilise the opportunity that this festive period brings to encourage ourselves so that the machinations of the wicked ones in our midst will find no place to thrive.

“Christmas is a season when hope is rekindled. Hope, Peace, Joy, Love are the recurring themes of this time.

“It is in the midst of hardship that the true test of a nation emerges.

“I urge Nigerians to invoke the indomitable spirit in us and see the present order of things as a phase that will also pass, just like other unsavory situations in the nation’s history.”

He pledged that government would not abandon the promises made to Nigerians for a better lease of life, while it would continue to “create opportunities for our teeming youths to ventilate their tremendous energy.”

Buhari said this is the second Christmas running that the world “will not be able to celebrate as we used to in years past,” on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He appealed to Nigerians to “embrace vaccination, which is the best scientifically known bulwark against the pandemic.”

He asked those that have taken the two doses to go ahead and take the booster as advised by the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC).

APC: We’re solidly committed to innovations to improve Nigeria’s electioneering processes

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said it remains solidly committed to “constitutionally permitted and practical innovations and processes that will improve the transparency and credibility of Nigeria’s election eering processes and internal democracy.”

The National Secretary, APC Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Dr. John Akpanudoedehe, assured Nigerians of the Buhari administration’s “capacity, intent and urgency to check and contain all criminalities so that Nigerians could go about their legitimate activities across the country safely.”

The party urged Nigerians to “use the joyful season to give and show love to our fellow men, particularly the needy and vulnerable among us,” while also urging “prayers and support for our selfless security and other essential services massively deployed around the country to ensure safe travel and yuletide festivities.”

PDP to Nigerians: Let’s reinforce our determination for national rebirth

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) advised Nigerians to use the Christmas to reinforce their determination for national rebirth.

The party’s spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, also stressed the need for Nigerians to unite and show love to one another, in line with the party’s mission to “rescue and rebuild the nation from misrule”.

The party said it was “deeply worried that in the last six years, Nigerians have been forced to mark Christmas in gloom, pain, anguish and utter despondency following excruciating economic hardship and worsened insecurity.”

It added: “The PDP is saddened that while people celebrate in other parts of the world, many Nigerian families could not afford the basic items of celebration or even travel, as they did in the past, to meet and bond with their loved ones due to high costs, worsened insecurity and deplorable state of roads which are now death traps in our country.

The PDP however urged Nigerians not to allow the suffering they face today to dampen or destroy their inner personalities as happy people so as not to lose sight of the message of hope, salvation and brighter future which Christmas offers.

National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, charged Nigerians to keep hope alive in spite of daunting circumstances.

Ayu, in a Christmas goodwill message, said although the occasion symbolises love, hope, sharing, celebration and thanksgiving, the gloomy economic situation has made such very difficult.

He said: “But I charge Nigerians not to lose hope. Keep hope alive. There is life beyond the APC gloom. The day will break after this long night. Do not let the sorry state of the nation dampen the Christmas spirit”.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar urged Nigerians to be intentional in thinking good thoughts and sowing better seeds of harmony and unity in diversity.

He said that as the world celebrates Christmas, which showcases the birth of Jesus Christ, Nigerians should embrace peace and unity at this period.

The former vice president reminded Nigerians that the revival of the country’s glory was everyone’s responsibility.

He said: “We cannot move forward as a country until we all realise that we are first Nigerians before our religious beliefs, ethnic identities, political leanings and cultural affiliations, and as such, we must show respect for one another by living in peace.

“As we celebrate, we should continue to extend hands of love and fellowship to our neighbours.

“We should live as one big family, irrespective of our social, political and religious leanings and continue to trust God for a better tomor row and a greater country.”

Lawan, Gbajabiamila, Omo-Agege preach love, peace, unity at Christmas

Senate President  Ahmad Lawan, in his own goodwill message, said beyond the great merriment and thanksgiving joy that have come to be associated with the season, Christmas reminds mankind of the humble birth, simple life, teachings and sacrificial love of Jesus Christ.

Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, charged Christians to imbibe the spirit of love, humility, peace, selfless service and all other positive attributes that the birth of Jesus Christ symbolises for the world.

He stressed the need for citizens to reflect on the virtues of love, peace and tolerance as exemplified by Jesus Christ in order to build a new Nigeria.

House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila described Christmas as a time that calls for sober reflection and asked Christians to pray for peace and unity in the country amidst the current challenges.

He said the character of Jesus Christ, who is the main reason for the Christmas celebrations, should reflect in the life of every Christian.

Nigerians, he added, should eschew acts capable of sparking a breakdown of law and order during and after the celebrations.

    Mark, Ekweremadu, southern senators too

Former President of the Senate, David Mark, expressed concern over the spate of violent crimes and insecurity across Nigeria and urged security operatives to review strategy towards reversing the situation.

Senator Mark said citizens of Nigeria have been exposed to more than enough ridicule on account of the insecurity challenges saying “Governments and security agents should do more to restore hope and trust in the land”.

He noted that the present security strategy seems not to be yielding the expected results saying: “a review of the operational strategy is therefore necessary in order to address the intractable issues.”

Former Deputy President of the Senate Ike Ekweremadu, on his part, urged Nigerians to embrace the values of love, peace, unity and sacrifice espoused by Christmas in order to move the nation forward.

He said despite the economic and security challenges, all hope was not lost if only citizens would unite in love across political, religious and ethnic divides to work in the collective interest of the nation.

The Southern Senators Forum, through its chairman, Opeyemi Bamidele, appealed to Nigerians to embrace peace by all means in order to move the country forward in the face of economic challenges occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic.

Bamidele, in a statement, urged all Nigerians to embrace peace by all means because there can never be tangible development in an environment where there is rancour.

He expressed optimism that the current problem would  soon vanish if Nigerians embrace peace which Jesus Christ Himself stands for.

Nigerians’ hearts heavy with suffering – Kaigama

Reflecting on the myriad of socio-economic problems in the country, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Dr. Ignatius Kaigama, said the situation has brought heavy hearts to Nigerians.

His words: “Christmas this year has found us in the throes of woes and distressing circumstances far beyond our human control.

“As Nigerians, in almost every part of this country, our hearts are heavy with the suffering we have experienced and seen this year alone, the many deaths as a result of terrorism, kidnapping and banditry, the depressing economic situation with inflation spiraling out of control, crashing further the ordinary man who has already been drained of joy, peace, and hope, the nagging presence of COVID-19 which has killed and forced a disturbing distance between us our loved ones and indeed the rest of humanity.

“The violent agitations for self-determination, which have come with the loss of lives and limbs, have left horrific scars on our collective psyche. All these make this year one that many Nigerians may not forget in a hurry. Nevertheless, Christmas proclaims, ‘Joy to the world the Lord has come.’

“For every disenchanted Nigerian who is on the verge of giving up on this country; for anyone who is prepared to cut off his moorings and drift away to distant lands, Christmas challenges us to dare to look ahead and again embrace the hope for a better Nigeria.”

PFN president: Don’t be dampened by harrowing experiences

Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) President, Wale Oke, asked Nigerians not to be dampened by whatever harrowing experiences they may be facing as the birth of Jesus Christ has brought hope and joy for mankind.

“This season, which celebrates the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ, represents hope and joy for all the people of the earth,” Oke said in his goodwill message.

“So, regardless of the situation we find ourselves, this opportunity given to you and I on a silver platter shows that we should be more than grateful by serving Him, the Almighty, with everything in us

“Our government at all levels should continue to work relentlessly toward making sure that our security, economic and political challenges, among others, are turned around for the good of the country and its people.

“Our economy should be knocked into shape by revamping it so as to bring down high cost of living in the land.”

    Makinde urges peace

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State urged peace during the festive period and told the people of the state in particular to observe necessary precautions such as proper sanitization, use of nose covers and maintenance of social distancing in order to keep the COVID-19 at bay.

Similarly, he asked the people to be security conscious at all times and report any suspicion regarding security.

We’ve fresh opportunity to end threat to national unity, says Lalong

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State said this year’s Christmas has presented Nigerians with a fresh opportunity to be inspired to eliminate all fears about the issues that stand against the unity and peace of the country.

He said the lifestyle of Jesus Christ clearly indicates that challenges are necessary for the process of development which applies to the various problems that Nigeria is confronting at the moment.

This he said should guide Nigerians not to despair but build hope and faith that the country will soon overcome its challenges and achieve stability.

Show more love, Peter Obi urges Christians

The vice-presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 elections, Mr Peter Obi, called on Christians to show more brotherly love and imbibe the spirit of giving their best for the good of others and for the development of society.

Obi urged Nigerians to go beyond the festivities and glamour associated with the Christmas season and strive to live out the true essence of the celebration.

Obi argued that “many societal ills plaguing Nigeria today, particularly rising insecurity, poverty, unemployment and drug abuse are mainly because we the leaders lack love and the spirit of sacrifice for the people.”

Adeola urges Christians to renew faith in God

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Solomon Adeola, said Christians should use the occasion of the Christmas celebration to renew their faith in Jesus Christ and abide by all security and safety precautionary measures against the continuing rampaging COVID-19 global pandemic and insecurity in some parts of Nigeria.

While acknowledging that the occasion indeed should be joyous with merry making, the senator called for caution in such display of positive emotion in view of the prescribed precautionary measures to prevent and combat possibly the fourth wave of COVID-19 pandemic with the Omicron variant, adding that in this season, it is better to be safe and secure than be sorry.

  • Queen Naomi’s divorce by Instagram

    Queen Naomi’s divorce by Instagram

Many Nigerians, at home and abroad, were shocked and dismayed when Olori Prophetess Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, announced during the week that she will be seeking divorce from her husband.

In very clear and unambiguous language, she told the world that the chapter of her life that has to do with the Ooni and the Ife throne was closed. She announced her son, Prince Tadenikawo, as the only memory about her marriage to the monarch that she will treasure going forward.

Silekunola made her disclosure on Thursday, December 23, through a post on her Instagram page. She said she will no longer be referred to as wife to the Ooni of Ife or as Queen of Ile-Ife but as “Queen of the People and mother of my adorable Prince.”

The Queen also recalled how she tried very hard to make her marriage work and smiled through the struggle, but had to resign to fate when it dawned on her that her son was her only assignment.

“I bless the Lord almighty for His faithfulness in the last three years of my marriage. In life’s journey, it isn’t how far. Still, how well, indeed though satan should buffet if trials should come, I have this blessed assurance controlling all situations and saying to me it is well with my soul. Certainly, it is well. I made my journey into the ancient throne of Ife with faith in my heart and love for the keeper of it.

“I did my best to endure and make it work; many times, I smiled through the struggle; but I have finally realised I had just one assignment, my son, and when God is done, He is done. He chose Saul to be king, and when He was done, He told the prophet Samuel I have moved on. Religion was never an issue between us; please refer to my interview on News Central TV. Instead, His Majesty has a picture he would love the world to see and perceive him as and another one which is his true self.

“Today I announce the beginning of a new dawn and the close of a chapter. Today, I am a mother to God’s unique gift. I am no longer a slave to my thoughts of perfection,” the estranged Olori wrote. Her departure from the palace, if it finally becomes confirmed, will not be the first since Oba Ogunwusi ascended the throne. In 2017, the then Queen of Ife, Olori Wuraola Otiti, stormed out of the palace in similar fashion. Some analysts have even observed some similarities in the statement she released back then and the one Olori Silekunola issued last Thursday.

“What I can confirm is that the Ooni and I are no more. I inhale love and exhale gratitude. My journey continues as a Humanitarian aiding women and victims of domestic violence and abuse with the United Nations. No matter how much time you’ve invested, no matter the use of media to silence and manipulate, no matter the circumstance, slander, embarrassment, threats and lies: Get out and seek immediate help!

“We have got to stop this culture of shaming and vilifying women with false stories of infidelity and nefarious behavior. The spreading of false information (through “sources” afraid to be identified) is the mark of cowards and a cover up for guilty parties to justify their horrific actions. There is absolutely no truth to the media circulated lies of infidelity and infertility- on my end,” she wrote back then.

Olori Silekunola’s exit will be the third time the Ooni’s marriage will crumble. His first marriage in 2008 to Adebukola Bombata packed up after eight years. It was thereafter that Oba Ogunwusi went all the way to the ancient Benin Kingdom in Edo State to marry Wuraola Otiti in March 2016.

The marriage barely lasted a year before the Queen sought and got a divorce in 2017. Her exit paved way for the arrival of now estranged Queen Silekunola at the Ooni’s palace after a celebrated wedding. For a fact, much fuss was made about her marriage to the king.

For one, she was hailed as the much waited ‘choice ordained by the gods’ having been described as the nominee of Ifa oracle as the next Queen of Ife Kingdom. Consequently, not many people saw the latest development coming.

However, the palace has faulted the claim saying “it is not true.” When contacted, the Ooni’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare said that “this is not the first time such rumours had been peddled. There was a time it was reported that she left the palace; and the next thing, she gave birth. So, the story is not true and it should not be taken seriously.”

Olafare was quick to add that Oba Ogunwusi bought a new car as a Christmas gift for Queen Silekunola hours before a divorce notice surfaced on social media. According to him, the Queen received the car after the divorce notice surfaced on social media. He added that the traditional ruler was not aware of any misunderstandings with his wife before he left the palace for a three-day music program tagged, ‘Memorable Moments With Music’ at the Muson Centre, Lagos State.

“A night before yesterday when everyone went to bed there was no indication to warrant the reported separation of the marriage, in fact, that previous day was when Kabiyesi bought a brand new car to serve as a Christmas gift to the queen. If you are planning to separate with your wife tomorrow why will you buy a car for her today? And so it became a surprise to everyone including Kabiyesi when we saw what was reported on social media. The palace is unaware of this because there are traditional procedures to follow,” Olafare said.

In spite of the denials by the Palace, Queen Silekunola is yet to denounce the statement that emanated from her verified Instagram handle. This has further strengthened the impression in many quarters that for the third time, Ooni Ogunwusi is saddled with the unenviable task of clearing the mess that usually trails a divorce, and of course, planning to seek the hand of another woman in marriage as there just must be a queen in the House of Oduduwa.

  • What a bloody year!

    What a bloody year!

The neck, fed to the armed bandit’s machete or the terrorist’s bullet was one of the most frightful imagery of Nigeria in 2021. It depicted the innate, outward torment of compatriots caught in the swirl of local terror and its spluttering sadism.

Thus Friday, January 1, dawned in carnage as the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) destroyed a Boko Haram settlement at Mana Waji in Borno State, killing dozens.

Many would call it a fitting response to the massacre of citizens in the previous calendar year, 2020, when Boko Haram carved bullets and axes from acid fury and for the sport of mayhem, increased the number of the dead.

Such barbarity became a pedestrian fact of our daily life through the year’s troubled stretch; it disinterred the bloody pagan spectacle of our supposedly “god-fearing” hordes: armed bandits and their victims, terrorists, and their informants in besieged communities.

Fifteen days after the NAF offensive against Boko Haram in Mana Waji, fighters from another terrorist group, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), armed with machine guns, overran a military base in Marte, also in Borno, killing seven and abducting one.

On January 25, the police commenced investigation of the kidnapping of seven boys and girls, aged 10–13, and an adult male from an orphanage in Abuja.

This chain of events spurred President Muhammadu Buhari to shake up the country’s security apparatus. Hence on January 26, he overhauled the top military command and appointed Major General Leo Irabor as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru as the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo as Chief of Naval Staff and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao as the Chief of Air Staff.

From February through April, the abduction of underage school kids, college and university undergraduates by armed bandits spelled fresh torture from the nation’s horror trove.

The first of several kidnappings of school children began with the Kagara abduction in Niger state and the abduction of 317 schoolgirls in Zamfara state nine days later. Then the bandits struck at the College of Forestry and Greenfield University in Kaduna state, Tegina, Kebbi, and Chinkun.

The sheer number of small incidents, at the heel of major coups scored by kidnap kingpins established that the kidnap economy has become very lucrative. For instance, about 2,371 persons were kidnapped and the sum of N10 billion demanded in ransom, across the country, in the first half of 2021, according to a report by SBM Intelligence, an economic research firm in its 2021 half-year kidnap report.

In May, Nigeria stirred to news of the alleged death of Abubakar Shekau, leader of Boko Haram, who reportedly blew himself up to avoid capture by rival group, ISWAP’s fighters.

In the same month, the country startled by the news of the demise of COAS Attahiru, who died in an air force plane crash, precisely four months after his appointment. Attahiru, 54, was killed along with 10 others including aides and crew when the aircraft they were traveling in crashed in the northern state of Kaduna, according to the Nigerian Army.

President Muhammad Buhari subsequently appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya, as the new chief of army staff. Until his appointment, Yahaya was the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, the counter-insurgency operation in the northeast. As the country grappled with a decade-long war against terror groups in the northeast, a worsening conflict between nomadic cattle herders and crop farmers in the central and southern regions, and a separatist rebellion in the southeast, Nigerians struggled to speak meaning to carnage and its tongued violence.

The true nature of armed banditry was further highlighted in Kaduna by an attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). Bandits invaded the military academy around 1 am on July 24, killing two officers and abducting another senior officer, Major Christopher Datong. Many others sustained gunshot injuries.

The attack on the military facility comes amidst heightened insecurity in the northwest, with Kaduna State at the epicenter.

Through the scrimmage, the individual’s primitive instinct for self-preservation burst through the mask of political correctness. It drove a self-confessed ‘man of God’ and church pastor to cheekily recommend a ‘Plan B’ (that is, relocation abroad) to supposedly smart members of his congregation.

The pastor stressed that he had smartly devised his family’s escape to an adopted nation, should things careen to a shove and Nigeria implodes.

The instinct to self-preserve allegedly incited separatists like Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho. The duo, chanted the twin-bladed mantra of dissolution, each man claiming incitement to arms by the misfortunes visited on their tribes by killer-herdsmen and “corrupt” law enforcers. Their crusade, however, triggered the loss of freedoms by their kinsmen: the freedom to dissent and call for a different approach, for instance.

But while Igboho marched on the streets with his goons to declare his Yoruba nation’s secession into his romanticised republic, his kinsmen and supposed beneficiaries watched in amusement from the safety of their homes and workplaces, his pitiful pantomime of tribal rage and parody of self-determination.

Kanu’s goons descended on the southeast mauling rich and poor, old and young. In their wake, the region grapples with the grisly murders of citizenry and policemen, mostly perpetrated by the much dreaded “unknown gunmen.”

Kidnaping and Collapse building in Nigera

This outgone year also pulsed with pleasant surprises. For instance, Nigeria’s former finance minister and World Bank chieftain, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was elected to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO) thus becoming the first woman and the first African to hold the post.

Earlier in March, Pope Francis met with Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Najaf Iraq, in the first meeting ever, between a pope and grand ayatollah. President Buhari publicly received the Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, urging Nigerians to follow his lead. However, data from the World Health Organization will later reveal that Nigeria has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the world with 2 out of 100 Nigerians fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

The long-awaited report of the judicial panel set up to investigate the Lekki Tollgate shooting proved a red-herring as it glorified rumours and unsubstantiated claims. In response, the Lagos State government issued a White Paper rebutting the claims of the panel and effectively shutting down all claims of a “massacre” during the EndSARS protest on October 20, 2020.

The Minister of Information and Culture had previously announced the suspension of Twitter’s operations in Nigeria indefinitely, over the company’s engagement in activities that were “capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”

On June 5, under directives issued pursuant to the suspension, Twitter was blocked by all internet service providers in the country.

Subsequently, the Nigerian Senate passed the Finance Bill 2021; one of the major highlights of the Bill is the aspect equipping the Federal Inland Revenues Service (FIRS) with the power to evaluate and tax non-resident firms like Twitter, Facebook, Google, and Netflix, among others.

Bullying also became a major issue in 2021. In the wake of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni’s untimely death at the hands of his bullies at Dowen College, Lagos State shut down the school and placed bullying inspectors all over schools in the state to protect young children from being bullied.

As the year winds to a close, COVID-19 remains a pervasive influence over life in Nigeria and across the world, with a new surge in cases and the discovery of the Omicron variant by laboratory technicians at Lancet Laboratories in Pretoria, South Africa.

Amid the uncertainty triggered by persistent insecurity and the global pandemic, more and more, we realise how deeply intertwined humanity is with the whole of the created world – humans, plants, animals inclusive. And how deeply our survival is dependent on good governance, social and health security, and the resiliency of humankind.
