  • It’s unclear whether Omicron is more dangerous, says WHO

It’s unclear whether Omicron is more dangerous, says WHO

By Bola Olajuwon, Frank Ikpefan, Abuja, Nsa Gill, Calabar

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said it is not yet clear whether the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, is more transmissible or causes more severe disease compared to other variants.

Omicron, which has been detected in a growing number of countries and regions worldwide, has been prompting governments to tighten their restrictions and impose new travel bans.

Two people who travelled to Nigeria tested positive in Canada

The variant has sparked concerns among the public as two people in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa have tested positive for the highly transmissible Omicron variant of COVID-19.

According to the Ontario provincial government on Sunday, the two people had recently travelled to Nigeria.

A statement issued by Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott and the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Kieran Moore said: “Ottawa Public Health is conducting case and contact management and the patients are in isolation.’’

    WHO, experts assessing Omicron threat

With cases popping up in more countries, WHO and experts sought to assess the true nature of the threat.

Researchers in South Africa announced its discovery last week, which resulted in multiple countries slamming the door shut to travel to that region.

That has sparked recriminations because there was no proof that the virus first developed there.

WHO, in a statement, said its experts, researchers in South Africa and around the world are currently conducting studies to better understand Omicron.

According to WHO, the experts are studying to understand the aspects of Omicron, but as of right now, it is not clear whether it is more transmissible compared to other variants, including Delta.

Anne von Gottberg of South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said researchers there uploaded the data sequence onto a global website, which gave the first hints of a new version of the virus with multiple mutations, the trait that has made so many scientists so worried.

“It’s the information together that was independently detected and uploaded that made us all speak altogether,” she said.

The revelation also helped explain why the region was seeing such a rapid increase in case counts after a period of relative calm.

Countries to discuss pandemic preparedness treaty

The 194 member states of the World Health Organisation (WHO) are to meet on Monday to consider a proposal to improve global preparedness for the next pandemic.

Germany’s diplomatic mission in Geneva tweeted that countries had agreed on a draft decision that will launch treaty negotiations and set out a timeline.

The draft document describes a decision to establish an intergovernmental body to negotiate a “WHO convention, agreement or other international instruments on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response’’.

The WHO said placing travel bans that target Africa owing to the Omicron COVID-19 variant will affect global solidarity.

    More countries take preventive measures

To prevent a potential pandemic resurgence fueled by the new variant, countries around the world have taken new preventive measures or tightened their existing restrictions.

Countries like Austria and the Czech Republic confirmed their first cases of Omicron yesterday, the latest on a long list, while multiple others added to their counts.

In South Africa, virologist Salim Abdool Karim estimated there could be 10,000 new coronavirus cases by the end of the week.

France has decided, along with other European Union countries, to suspend flights from seven Southern African countries.

British Health Secretary Sajid Javid said mandatory mask-wearing should come into force from today.

The British government, at the weekend, added South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Namibia to the country’s travel red list.

The National Centre for Disease Control of Libya also on Sunday announced new travel restrictions due to the Omicron variant.

It recommended Libyans not to travel to countries where the new variant has been detected.

Jordan has also announced that travellers from South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, and Botswana are banned from entry into the country.

Ayade suspends Calabar Carnival for second year

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade yesterday confirmed that the annual Carnival Calabar will not hold this year.

This would be the second year that the carnival would not hold. It was suspended last year following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The meeting was attended by carnival band leaders, Speaker of the House of Assembly Eteng Jones Williams, members of the state Executive Council, local government chairman from the 18 council areas.

NYSC to decamp Corps members for protocols’ flouting

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) yesterday vowed to decamp any prospective corps member, who flouts protocols put in place to fight the pandemic.

The scheme urged corps members to adhere strictly to the non-pharmaceutical safety protocols of COVID-19 as the world battles the new variant.

NYSC Director-General Brig-Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim gave the warning during a nationwide virtual address to the 2021 Batch ‘C’ Stream Two prospective corps members and camp officials.

In a statement yesterday by the NYSC Deputy Director Press and Public Relations, Emeka Mgbemena, the DG advised the PCMs to avoid complacency on COVID-19, adding that it is mandatory for corps members to abide by the Federal Government deadline on COVID-19 vaccination.

AU Commission, NEPAD, Kenya, AfDB postpone conferences

PIDA Week Organising Team, in a statement sent to The Nation yesterday, said it has been determined prudent to postpone PIDA Week pending further clarity on the situation following recent developments relating to COVID-19 and concerns around wellness and safety of travellers, and in consultation with relevant stakeholders.

AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, in a statement issued yesterday in Abidjan, said the postponement was in relation to travel restrictions arising from the emergence of the Omicron variant.

One billion vaccine doses for Africa, says China

Meanwhile, Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, told African leaders in a videoconference that his country was prepared to direct 1 billion coronavirus vaccine doses to the continent, 600 million doses as donations, while another 400 million would be produced by joint undertakings.

The goal is to get African vaccination rates higher, said Xi, noting an African Union goal of getting 60 per cent of the population vaccinated this year, even though the vaccination rate is in single digits in large areas of the continent.

To help more, China is prepared to send 1,500 medical experts to help in Africa.

Biontech announces adapted vaccine for variant

The German vaccine manufacturer, Biontech, has announced that it is developing an adapted vaccine.

The vaccine is to serve as a precautionary measure while simultaneously carrying out research on the nature of the new Omicron variant of the Coronavirus.

“To avoid wasting time, we are tackling these two tasks in parallel until the data is available and we have more information on whether the vaccine needs to be adapted or not,’’ a Biontech spokeswoman told dpa.

Omicron COVID-19 variant: Nigeria on the alert, says govt

By Moses Emorinken and Bolaji Ogundele, Abuja

    • Result of samples sequencing expected today

    • Entry points under watch

    • Reviewed travel guidelines begin Friday

Nigeria has been put on the alert over the new COVID-19 variant called Omicron, the Federal Government said yesterday.

To prevent the new variant of the virus in the country, it has increased testing of reported COVID-19 cases and  surveillance at all entry ports.

Today, the Federal Government is expected to release its reviewed COVID-19 guidelines for inbound and outbound travellers, which will not exempt diplomats.

Also, the results of some samples being sequenced for possible Omicron will be out.

No fewer than 3.6 million Nigerians have been fully vaccinated while Ogun Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Nasarawa states are leading the vaccination coverage.

Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire; Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Ifedayo Adetifa and  Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) Faisal Shuaib, spoke on the new wave during the COVID-19 briefing by the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) in Abuja.

Ehanire, who was emphatic that there was no confirmed case of Omicron in Nigeria, said:  ”We have always made it clear that we are not yet out of the woods and we are still required to be careful about our movements and about our compliance with advisories.

“The focus suddenly came some days ago about a new variant that just appeared in Botswana and South Africa. It has created some anxiety all over the world and in Nigeria. We have taken measures to ensure that Nigeria is not in a dangerous situation.

“Federal Government is increasing measures of surveillance at our ports of entry and testing and trying to encourage all the participants to come on their toes.

“Vaccination can help us and the non-pharmaceutical interventions or public health measures which we have been preaching for a very long time and which we will not get tired of preaching.

“The B11529 Omicron variant can transmit very rapidly and easily, but up till now, thankfully not many fatalities have been recorded globally. The new variant has been seen in Europe, Hong Kong, and  Canada.

“In Nigeria, the sequence has already started of all cases that are coming up. We received reports of a citizen of our country who tested positive in Canada. We are scaling up genomic sequencing.

“As far as preparation for the COVID-19 Omicron variant is concerned, we are adopting a watchful, waiting posture, in that we are looking very closely at all developments and watching the point of entry, particularly with a lot of alerts.”

Adefila, who also said there was no confirmed case of  Omicron in Nigeria, added that results of the “pipeline of samples will be ready tomorrow(today).”.

He said: “Concerning the two cases reported in Canada with a history of travel in Nigeria. We are awaiting the full information from the Canadian authorities to know who these travellers are and more importantly to understand the nature of travel.

“We also know that there is a traveler who we have been alerted to by the United Kingdom(UK) authorities, who traveled to Nigeria from South Africa by the way of the UK.

“We have been able to confirm that the return PCR test was negative and the repeat day-two test is also negative, and this passenger was fully vaccinated.”

PSC’s National Incident Manager, Mukhtar Muhammad, said that new travel guidelines, which would take effect    December 3, 2021, would be announced by the committee today.

He added that there would be strict enforcement of the guidelines as part of the efforts to prevent the importation of Omicron.

He explained that there would be strict enforcement of the guidelines as part of the efforts to prevent the importation of Omicron.

Muhammad said: “The  PSC will be issuing a travel guideline document tomorrow (today), but let me highlight the contents of this travel guideline.

“Passengers arriving the country are required to do a PCR test 48 hours before departing. They will also do day two and day seven PCR tests on arrival and they will be required to self-isolate for seven days.

“Passengers that are outbound, going out of Nigeria will be required to either show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or provide a negative PCR test taken 48 hours before departure. These conditions apply to diplomats as well. The measures will come into effect by Friday, 3rd of December, 2021.

“The PSC will ensure that there is enforcement of passengers who arrive and refuse to take the test through suspension of their passports and prosecution or both. Furthermore, we’ll be increasing our surveillance at the ports of entry into the country, intensify testing and contact tracing, and optimise sequencing capacity.”

  • APC, PDP resume hostility ahead 2023

APC, PDP resume hostility ahead 2023

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday said there is no alternative to the ruling party in 2023.

The party acknowledged what it described as the gang up against it by opposition parties, warning that it will fail.

The Secretary of the National Caretaker Committee, Senator John Akpanudoedehe, said no amount of gang-up orchestrated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can abort the dream of continuity by the APC in 2023.

PDP National Chairman-elect, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, unfolded plans by the main opposition party to mobilise other parties to defeat the APC.

Ayu said the opposition parties owed Nigerians a sacred duty of educating and sensitising them to the “disaster” that awaits the country, if the APC retains power beyond 2023.

The PDP chairman-elect spoke at his private residence in Abuja while hosting the leadership of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

Describing the APC as the “biggest cancer” in the country, Ayu said Nigeria will break up, if the APC retains power.

He chided the Buhari’s administration for maladministration, nepotism, mismanagement of the economy, accumulation of foreign debts, and devaluation of the Naira.

He maintained that PDP will lead other opposition parties to tackle the APC on many critical national issues.

Ayu said: “Things have gone wrong and it is the responsibility of every political party to point them out and provide alternative ways of tackling them, and I believe that if we join hands together, we will change this country for the better.

“Nigeria seems to have the worst currency in Africa. Even Somalia that is a failed state, is doing better than Nigeria. Our currency is in a free fall. That is because we are an import-dependent economy.

“The quality of lives of Nigerians is going down. What used to sell for N10,000 before the APC took over, now sells for about N100, 000. Our people can no longer live a healthy, quality life.

“So, I charge all of you to strengthen Nigeria so that more voices will be speaking about that; it shouldn’t just be PDP.”

CUPP spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere, who led the group, recalled that the PDP initiated the formation of the CUPP as a strong coalition to mobilise Nigerians against the APC government.

He expressed fears that the APC-led Federal Government is adopting delay tactics to dump the Electoral Act Amendment Bill and the electronic transmission of the results.

He said: “It is important to note that they used the trick in the ECOWAS Commission that said nation-states cannot amend their electoral laws six months to elections.

“We have started wasting time again. If action is not taken now, we will have the same problem we had the last time.

“The electronic transmission of votes gives opportunity for credible election in 2023. We believe that these are things you need to look into”.

Security agents were still at Jos custodial centre yesterday after gunmen attacked the facility on Sunday.

The assailants were resisted by a combined team of armed custodial squad, police, troops and other agents, culminating in a heavy shootout.

Nine escapee inmates were reportedly shot dead in the crossfire while 262 inmates escaped, the correctional centre said.

One member of the custodial squad died, while one of the bandits was also killed.

In a stop-and-search operation launched after the attack, 10 of the escapees have returned to the facility, but while nine of them were recaptured, one was said to have willingly returned.

“Police and other security agencies are currently on the ground to effectively deprive the hoodlums of the space they desire to perpetrate their evil acts,” spokesman Gabriel Ubah said yesterday in a statement.

The escape of the 262 inmates was confirmed by the spokesman of the centre, Francis Enobore, who said one official of the custodial facility was shot in the hand.

It was learnt that at the time of the attack, the Jos Medium Security Custodial Centre had 1,060 inmates comprising 560 pre-trial detainees and 500 convicts.

The Plateau State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) condemned the assault and hailed the security agencies for their gallantry in responding to it.

The party, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Sylvanus Namang, said the attackers, when apprehended, must not be treated with kid gloves but must be made to pay dearly for their action as a deterrent to others.

Governor Simon Lalong also condemned the attack and praised the security officials for their timely intervention.

The governor directed that security be strengthened around all custodial facilities in the state, adding that the state and the federal government will do everything possible to prevent such attacks in future.

  • BREAKING: Jack Dorsey resigns as Twitter CEO

BREAKING: Jack Dorsey resigns as Twitter CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of microblogging platform Twitter, Jack Dorsey, has resigned from his position.

He announced his resignation on Monday confirming Parag Agrawal as his successor.

This is coming 16 years after co-founding the social media company.

“I resigned from Twitter,” he wrote and posted a screenshot of his resignation letter on his Twitter page.

Here is Dorsey’s full resignation letter:

    Hello team.

After almost 16 years of having a role at our company…..from co-founder to CEO to Chair to Exec Chair to interim-CEO to CEO…I decided it’s finally time for me to leave. Why?

There’s a lot of talk about the importance of a company being ‘founder-led.’ Ultimately I believe that’s severely limiting and a single point of failure. I’ve worked hard to ensure this company can break away from its founding and founders. There are 3 reasons I believe now is the right time.

The first is Parag becoming our CEO. The board ran a rigorous process considering all options and unanimously appointed Parag. He’s been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs. Parag has been behind every critical decision that helped turn this company around. He’s curious, probing, rational, creative, demanding, self-aware, and humble. He leads with heart and soul, and is someone I learn from daily. My trust in him as our CEO is bone-deep.

The second is Bret Taylor agreeing to become our board chair, I asked Bret to join our board when I became CEO, and he’s been excellent in every way. He understands entrepreneurship, taking risks, companies at massive scale, technology, product, and he’s an engineer. All of the things the board and the company deserve right now. Having Bret in this leadership role gives me a lot of confidence in the strength of our board going forward. You have no idea how happy this makes me!

The third is all of you. We have a lot of ambition and potential on this team. Consider this: Parag started here as an engineer who cared deeply about our work and now he’s our CEO (I also had a similar path…he did it better!). This alone makes me proud. I know that Parag will be able to channel this energy best because he’s lived it and knows what it takes. All of you have the potential to change the course of this company for the better. I believe this with all my heart!

Parag is CEO starting today. I’m going to serve on the board through my term (May-ish) to help Parag and Bret with the transition. And after that…I’ll leave the board. Why not stay or become chair? I believe it’s really important to give Parag the space he needs to lead. And back to my previous point, I believe it’s critical a company can stand on its own, free of its founder’s influence or direction.

I want you all to know that this was my decision and I own it. It was a tough one for me, of course. I love this service and company…and all of you so much. I’m really sad……yet really happy. There aren’t many companies that get to this level. And there aren’t many founders that choose their company over their own ego. I know we’ll prove this was the right move.

We’ll have an all-hands meeting tomorrow at 9:05 AM Pacific to discuss it all. Until then, thank you all for the trust you’ve placed in me, and for the openness to build that trust in Parag and yourselves. I love you all.
