General killed by ISWAP, seven others buried in Yola

Brigadier General Dzarma Zurkusu and seven other soldiers killed earlier in the month in Chibok, Borno State, were buried on Friday in Yola.

Zurkusu was killed alongside four soldiers in an ambush by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Uba Askira, Borno State, on November 13, 2021.

Earlier, three other military fighters were killed in a separate encounter with the terrorists.

The eight were laid to rest Friday evening at Gibson Jalo Cantonment Military Cemetery in Yola with President Muhammadu Buhari represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, with host governor Ahmadu Fintiri personally in attendance.

Burial rites for the deceased were followed earlier in the day with a church service for the five Christians among the deceased and Islamic prayers for the three Muslims among them.

In a message to the event, President Buhari said through the SGF that the slain military officers and men were courageous men who paid the supreme price for their fatherland.

“Nigeria has lost great soldiers. But the soldier in them will remain immortal,” Buhari said.

In his own personal remark, Boss Mustapha, who hails from the same Kalaha town in Hong local government area of Adamawa State with the late General Zurkusu,  said the late General was a gallant officer whose gallantry was recognized and respected.

“He was synonymous with gallantry,” Boss Mustapha said of the General, adding that the General would be remembered for such worthy attribute.

In his speech, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Farouk Yahaya, said the military officers died as heroes fighting to protect the nation and the Nigerian Army would place their children on scholarship in addition to paying all their entitlements.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri,  in his own turn, said the presence of the military formation which the deceased brigadier general headed accounted for the relative peace that Madagali and Muchika towns in Adamawa State have been enjoying in recent times.

Both towns have always been the hardest hit in Adamawa State in respect of attacks by Boko Haram terrorist elements.

The governor announced the donation of a total of N27 million to the families of the deceased: N10 million for the bereaved family of Brig Gen Dzarma Zurkusu and N17 million for the other seven bereaved families.

Diezani loses bid to recover $40m jewelry from Fed Govt

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, on Friday, dismissed an appeal by the embattled former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, challenging the forfeiture of her $40million worth of jewelry to the Federal Government.

The appellate court held that there was no substance in Alison-Madueke’s bid to overturn the lower court’s order.

It affirmed the 2019 judgment of Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court which forfeited the jewelry following an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Nation reports that the appellate court gave its judgment in an appeal filed by Alison-Madueke marked as Appeal No CA/L/1263/19 between Diezani Alison Madueke and the EFCC.

On July 5, 2019, the EFCC secured an order of the high court temporarily forfeiting the expensive items to the Federal Government.

According to the schedule attached to the application, the jewelry, categorised into 33 sets, include “419 expensive bangles; 315 expensive rings; 304 expensive earrings; 267 expensive necklaces; 189 expensive wristwatches; 174 expensive necklaces and earrings; 78 expensive bracelets; 77 expensive brooches; and 74 expensive pendants.”

The items were seized from the former minister’s premises, at No. 10 Fredrick Chiluba Close, Asokoro, Abuja.

Justice Oweibo on July 19, 2019, granted the EFCC’s motion for final forfeiture of the jewelry.

The judge held that the former minister failed to show cause why the jewelry should not be forfeited to the Federal Government.

In his application for the final forfeiture order, EFCC counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, had told the judge that the items were reasonably suspected to have been acquired with the proceeds of unlawful activities of the former minister.

An investigator with the Commission, Rufai Zaki, in an affidavit before the court insisted that the jewelry was beyond the former minister’s “known and provable lawful income.”

The investigator said that findings by the EFCC revealed that she started acquiring the jewelry in 2012, two years after she was appointed minister.

The investigator also said that the EFCC was in possession of the details of the bank account through which Alison-Madueke received her salary as a minister.

“The respondent did not utilise her salary or any part of her legitimate income to acquire the assets sought to be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria,” Zaki said.

He said a “damning intelligence report” received by the Commission led to the search of the former minister’s house at No. 10 Fredrick Chiluba Close, Asokoro, Abuja.

The Former Minister on her part had challenged the seizure of the jewelry from her premises by the EFCC.

An affidavit filed on her behalf by her counsel, Prof Awa Kalu (SAN), Diezani, who is currently in the United Kingdom, alleged that the EFCC violated her fundamental “right to own property and to appropriate them at her discretion,” under sections 43 and 44 of the constitution.

She also accused the anti-graft agency of entering her apartment illegally and taking the items without any court order.

Principal, Vice, others abducted in Ondo

Gunmen have abducted the Principal of Auga Community Grammar school, Mr Joshua Adeyemi his vice, Mr Ifedayo Yesufu and three N Power Teachers.

The victims were abducted along Auga-Ise Road while travelling in a Toyota corolla car on Thursday.

A pregnant teacher among them, Mrs Blessing Okeke, was said to have been released by their abductors.

Mrs Okeke said they were beaten by their abductors as they trekked in the bush for over one hour.

A police officer in Ikare division, who pleaded anonymity, said rescue operation has commenced.

He said the vehicle in which the victims were travelling has been removed from the spot where it was left.

Cases of kidnappings have been on the increase since soldiers were withdrawn from checkpoints across the State.

Declaration of bandits as terrorists won’t change anything – Gumi

Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has described the declaration of bandits as terrorists as a decision taken for mere political expediency, which will not change anything.

According to him: “I think the Federal Government has succumbed to media blackmail by a section of the country. It will not have any practical value because even before the declaration they are being fought and treated as terrorists.”

In a statement by Malam Tukur Mamu, the Dan-Iyan Fika and Media Consultant to Sheikh Gumi, the Muslim scholar said: “So it’s just a nomenclature which I believe will not change the dynamics on ground.

“If you can remember IPOB was also declared a terrorist organisation, the declaration was even backed by the order of the Court but as you can see even the international community did not recognise FG’s declaration of IPOB. So it has failed to be effective or to achieve the desired results.”

“They have not been ban from travelling to other countries while their citizenship remains intact, it has not been denounced. So what type of declaration is that?

” I sincerely hope that Nigerians will not take the herdsmen as terrorists but should regard the criminality of the few among them against innocent people as acts of terrorism just as we see IPOB and their attacks on security agencies and other northern citizens as acts of terrorism. Very few herdsmen are bandits if you go through their population.”

“I hope this declaration will not give the license to people to be profiling herdsmen in general as terrorists and taking laws into their hands against them. It will cause more mayhem.

“The declaration will not change anything, it will not change the dynamics. Already the military is engaging them. It didn’t stop them from kidnappings and killings. The declaration will not end their aggression against the society.”

He added: “The Fulani banditry is a socio-economic problem. We have seen it, we interacted widely with them. We told the federal government the way out. It can only be won through engagement, dialogue and justice. That is why today there is relative peace in the Niger Delta because government have accepted the painful reality of rehabilitating and empowering them.”

“There has to be equitable distribution of wealth in Nigeria and justice for every one. People don’t want to accept it, before the issue of banditry that now affects all of us, the Fulanis have suffered so much.”

“They have lost their legitimate means of livelihood, I mean their cows through cattle rustling and extortion by security agencies. That has to be addressed as a means of genuine reconciliation and integration. They should have sense of belonging.”

  • NANS rejects proposed fuel price hike, threatens shutdown

NANS rejects proposed fuel price hike, threatens shutdown

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to shut down the country if the Federal Government implements the planned fuel subsidy removal.

The students’ body also rejected the government’s plan to pay N5,000 transport allowance to 40 million Nigerians to cushion the effect of soaring fuel prices.

Addressing Journalists in Abuja on Friday, NANS President, Comrade Sunday Asefon, said the union would mobilise its 41 million members across the country to protest what it called a “strange proposal.”

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, had announced that the government would remove fuel subsidy and replace it with a monthly N5,000 transport grant to 40 million poor Nigerians.

Asefon however, noted that with the present economic realities, it was wrong for government to contemplate something as critical as deregulating the petroleum sector “without thinking it through, without consultation and without a robust debate.”

He described the move as a plan by government to get money at all costs to squander and finance the ostentatious lifestyles of public officers and senior civil servants, adding that any attempt to aggravate the economic woes of Nigerians would not only be unconscionable but reckless.

He said: “Nigerians are really suffering. We are in dire socioeconomic straits. We are weeping in our hearts and souls. We are dying in silence. We feel the agony and anguish because we are practically involved.

“It will amount to testing the patience of Nigerians too far. And we wish to warn against it. The country is very stretched and tensed. In case the government is not aware, we are passing them this intelligence free of charge now. Again we advise, let the government not stretch it further.

“The consequences will be dire. The people are already flamed. Mendacity will beget mendacity
NANS is happy that the organised labour and civil society groups have all rejected the proposal.

“We shall ensure that the entire country is shut down and paralysed should the Federal Government proceed with its insensitive plan of deregulation, or even any further increase in the pump price of fuel. We have had enough.

“We know that neo-liberal and imperial economists will soon emerge to confuse themselves with some well rehearsed stale analysis and commentaries.

“It is therefore very strange that the Federal Government could contemplate the removal of fuel subsidy now. The four refineries are not functioning, and if they are functioning at all, it is at a near zero level.

“There is a zero consultation with stakeholders to even consider issues around deregulation and why it should or should not be. The survival of Nigerian workers and their wards is yet to be discussed, yet a date that may take lives out of them have been fixed.

“Furthermore, inflation is already passing a skyrocket level. So we may need to find a word to describe the kind of inflation that will be experienced if the pump price of PMS goes above 200 percent.

” In fact, we are very convinced that the Federal Government is acting impulsively on a matter as sensitive as this. And our conviction is based on many things that cannot just add up. Beyond the issues already raised, let us consider the following economic confusions:

“In 2022 Appropriation Bill, the FG already provided for fuel subsidy. One then wonders why it will provide for what it plans to eliminate.

“Upon which data did the Honourable Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning determine that only 40 million Nigerians are vulnerable? And what is the definition of vulnerability in our socioeconomic context?
Where does she intend to generate the money which will be paid to those 40 million Nigerians since there is no provision for it in 2022 Appropriation Bill?”

Asefon urged the government to rescind the plan till adequate arrangements like refining at home and utilising the nation’s petrochemical by-products are made.
