Nollywood veteran comedian Baba Suwe dies at 63

By Gbenga Bada, Alao Abiodun and Sam Anokam

Nigerians expressed shock and grief yesterday as popular Nollywood actor/comedian, Babatunde Omidina (aka Baba Suwe), died.

The actor died after battling illness for over two years.

    He was 63.

Baba Suwe’s death was announced by one of his daughters, Adesola Omidina.

“This is to announce the sudden death of my father, Babatunde Omidina, the legend and rare gem, Baba Suwe, on November 22, 2021. Details and other arrangements will be announced shortly,” she said.

Baba Suwe became popular for his comic roles in several Nollywood films and television productions between late ‘80s and mid-‘90s.

The actor and film producer became famous for his TV series, Erin Keeke, which had Yoruba as the language of communication.

The series made waves on NTA Channel 7 in the ‘90s and featured popular film stars, like Opebe, Madam Saaje, Suwe, Emukay, and others, until it stopped airing in 1996.

The veteran actor went on to make an impact on the home video scene by appearing in several movies and later producing over 10 under his Erin Keeke imprint and late Babs Omidina Production.

His fame continued to grow after he featured in Olaiya Igwe’s movie, titled: Iru Esin, in 1997.

He also worked with various major movie producers and marketers, like Bayowa Films and Corporate Pictures.

Some of his memorable works include Baba Laarinlodu, Baba Jaiye Jaiye, Ojabo Ko Fo, and Elebolo.

He fell ill in 2018 and his health deteriorated until 2019 when several Nigerians, including Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, donated funds for his medical treatment abroad.

President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, yesterday mourned Baba Suwe.

In a short statement sent to The Nation, Rollas wrote: “We received the news of his demise with shock. But we are consoled that he lived a worthy life and left his footprint on the entertainment industry.

“His contribution to Nollywood cannot be quantified. He will forever be remembered for his professionalism and his art which many have excelled in and many more are following his footsteps doing well. May God grant him eternal rest.”

Also, some Nollywood actors, including Yewande Adekoya Abiodun, Sola Kosoko Abina, Muka Ray, and Sunny Alli, yesterday mourned Baba Suwe.

Abiodun wrote: “Rest in peace, legend.”

Abina, one of the daughters of veteran actor Jide Kosoko, wrote: “Oh my God! Rest in peace.”

Also expressing shock, Ray, one of the sons of legendary actor, Ray Eyinwunmi, wrote: “Haa, rest in peace.”

Alli, a member of the Odunfa Caucus, who worked closely with the late Baba Suwe in his prime, wrote: “Innalillahi waina illaehi rojiun …RIP, Baba Suwe.”

Fabiyi, who had been at the forefront of donation, soliciting funds for late Baba Suwe when his health failed terribly in 2019, could not hide his sadness.

While his phones have remained busy, the actor shared a candlelight and Emojis of weeping on his Instagram account.

He wrote: “The only time you cannot know true friends, especially in our industry, is when you party or have buffet; when they have nothing to lose or suffer no discomfort. If you fall terribly sick or run into any problem, that you need moral support, that is when you will know you amount to nothing to them.

“Efele, you cease to exist. That energy for your party gone; they won’t look for you. Definition of our love is different from what we portray in our movies. Fake lives always win on social media, no matter how honest you are. We can restore true love if we stop.”

Born on August 22, 1958 and raised in Inabere Street on Lagos Island, Baba Suwe is an indigene of Ikorodu area of Lagos.

He began acting in 1971 but came into the limelight after he featured in a movie titled: ‘Omolasan,’ a film produced by Obalende.

He henceforth rose to prominence in Yoruba comedy films.

Panel report: #EndSARS star witness matcheted on Sunday night, says Adegboruwa

A key #EndSARS protester and one of the movement’s star witnesses at the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and other matters was attacked with machetes, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa alleged on Monday.

Adegboruwa, one of the members of the panel, also raised the alarm over an alleged plot on his life

Adegboruwa in a statement on Monday titled, ‘Nigerians should hold government responsible if anything happens to me’, linked the allegation to the panel’s report which it submitted to the Lagos State Government last Monday.

Last Monday, the panel submitted two documents — a consolidated report on cases of police brutality and another on the Lekki incident investigation — to Sanwo-Olu.

Sanwo-Olu set up a four-man committee to examine it within two weeks and “bring forward the white paper that would be considered at the Lagos State executive council and presented as the white paper coming from the panel of inquiry.”

Hours afterwards, a version of the 309-page document appeared in the media space.

In that version, the panel said the “killing of unarmed protesters by soldiers on October 20, 2020 could be described in the context of a ‘massacre’”.

The report has elicited varied reactions, with several persons citing errors in the document currently in circulation.

Panel members’ competence and integrity have also been questioned by several commentators.

In his fourth statement on the matter since the panel submitted its report, the SAN alleged that he was being threatened.

Adegboruwa said: “Since the submission of the report of the Lagos #EndSARS Panel, there have been lots of threats and attacks, by those suspected to be agents of the government, upon me, especially in the media.

“I have not committed any crime beyond joining other eminent Nigerians with unblemished integrity, to accept the nomination of government on behalf of my constituency, the Nigerian Bar Association and the civil society and the indeed the masses of our people, for a national assignment.

“Two prominent lawyers of the government have openly incited opinions against me on national television, with mindless accusations.

“I have however refused to be intimidated or bend to the tactics of government to be silenced.

“I urge the good people of Nigeria, my professional colleagues in the Nigerian Bar Association, my comrades in the civil rights movement and the people of Nigeria, to hold government responsible should anything happen to me.

“Just last night, one of the prominent EndSARS protesters who testified before the Panel, Miss Kamsiyochukwu Ibe, was attacked and dealt serous machete blows, in what was clearly an attempted murder, as reported by her counsel, with very disturbing photos.

“I heeded the clarion call to serve by the government with the honest believe that the Panel was meant to say the truth and nothing but the truth, which is what we have done. It is left for government and Nigerians to do the needful with the report of the Panel.

    “God bless Nigeria.”

  • Buhari to fix date for APC national convention

Buhari to fix date for APC national convention

President Muhammadu Buhari will determine when the All Progressives Congress(APC) National Convention will hold, Governors elected on the platform of the party may have resolved.

This was the outcome of a meeting by the Governors under the auspices of Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) on Sunday night in Abuja.

Chairman of the forum, Abubakar Bagudu, told newsmen after the meeting that the forum will seek an appointment with Buhari on the National Convention of the party.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party on June 25, 2020 dissolved the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) and appointed a 13-man Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) led by Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni to organise, among others the National Convention of the party within six months.

The silence of the CECPC on the convention date has pitched it against some party members.

The caretaker committee Secretary, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, said stakeholders, not the committee, will fix the date for the national convention.

A source at the Governors’ meeting told The Nation: “The meeting discussed the National Convention but agreed to give Mr. President the honor of fixing the date for the convention.

“You know many things are to be considered in fixing the convention and the Governors resolved that as the leader of the party, Mr. President, should be given the honor to fix the convention date.

“This is the position the Governors will be taking to a meeting with the President between now and Wednesday. It was the view of the forum that date by President Buhari will be honoured and will be acceptable to all the party members across the various political tendencies in the party.”

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Bagudu said the Governors will seek an appointment with the President on the forthcoming national convention and other pertinent issues concerning the party.

Asked the decision of the forum on the party’s much-awaited national convention, the Kebbi Governor said: “We agreed as a forum, to seek appointment to meet with the President and discuss the on-coming national convention of the party.

“Mind you, we are just one organ of the party and since we are making suggestions to both the party and our party leader (President Buhari), I think it is not fair to preempt or disclose it before the meeting holds.

“We hope to secure that appointment as quickly as possible. Following our meeting with the President, we will disclose what we recommended,” he started.

Bagudu dismissed speculations that the APC governors proposed meeting with the President was to convince him not to assent the Electoral Act Amendment bill.

“Well, I just told you what we are meeting the President for. It is to discuss the oncoming National Convention,” he offered.

On the various crisis in many States, which tend to pitch members against the Buni-led caretaker committee and fears of the possible implosion of the party, the PGF Chairman dismissed these concerns and affirmed that the party was on course.

“I don’t think those expressing such fears are representing reality. This is a party which was not only able to mobilise into its fold three outstanding Governors into the party, the Deputy Governor of Anambra state, members of the National Assembly, distinguished Nigerians from all walks of life and this is the party where the party leadership is humble to say that all Nigerians should join us so that we unite and serve Nigerians.

“While other parties are sending people away, we, despite our strength are inviting them to join us so that together we reposition and keep the progressive agenda,” he stated.

  • ‘Why National Assembly is pushing for direct primary’

‘Why National Assembly is pushing for direct primary’

Oluwafemi Fadairo is Director of Administration in the Office of Senate President Ahmed Lawan. In this interview, he speaks on the amended Electoral Act, youth participation in politics and the chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in future polls. Excerpts:

Since your appointment as a Director of administration to the Senate President, what development have you brought to your community?

They are numerous and if I begin to count them from now till the evening time I would still be counting but I will mention a few. I have been able to facilitate three 500 KVA transformers to three communities in Akure. I have been able to impact lives of our artisans. Not only that, I have graded township roads, seven in Akure North and ten in Akure South local government where I hail from. Also I have been able to give out vulcanizing machines; I have been able to impact lives of our women giving them loans without interest. I have given millions of Naira to Ishinigbo women in Akure North, APC women in politics, I gave them loan instead of borrowing from micro finance banks with high interest rate, I said no if you are following me you must have something to fall back on.

Are you doing these because you have interest in elective position?

Absolutely No I have been doing these things since 2017 even when I was Special Assistant on Special Duty to Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice. I have given out free jamb forms to seven hundred and twenty student in Akure north and south, it is on record and my passion to give back to the society that produced me was what necessitated me to give back to the society it is not about someone contesting or about today, since 2017 this is 2021 I have been able to impact lives since that time.

What is your understanding about youth involvement in politics?

My concept is that we need to liberate ourselves as youths and stop all these social vices youths normally commit themselves into. When you talk of fraud, thuggery and robbery, you see youths there. As a youth I want to tell my fellow youths that you can make impact in life without you involving yourself in crime. I stared as a youth leader of a party as a graduate but I did not allow that to define me despite the fact that my party chairman was an illiterate. I kept on moving because I know what I want for myself as a youth. Without involving ourselves in political calculations as youth, Nigeria is in big trouble. So, I volunteered myself, I made myself a case study that youths can do better, we are not saying the elders should be pushed out of the corridor of power, but they should give us chance. We should learn good lessons from the elders. Although, there are some elders, who do not have anything to offer, like what I have been able to do in the two communities where I hail from. My take is that youths should involve themselves more in politics and change the narratives politically in our dear country and in our dear state and in our respective local governments.

We have youth who were given opportunities to serve in political offices and have disappointed the electorate, what is your take on this set of youth?

You cannot use one person to generalise one thousand youths, you cannot use one scenario to generalise us. Among Jesus disciples, we had one betrayed and we had one that identified Jesus Christ to the enemies. We cannot say that all youths are the same; we have some among us that will involve themselves in social vices. Similarly, not all of the elders are good; some of them are bad as devil himself. I want to make myself exemplary youth for my fellow youth to emulate. This is what gingered me to say Nigeria must grow economically and youths must be actively involved in politics

Do you think APC stand a chance to win election in Nigeria especially in Ondo State considering the level of insecurity ravaging the country?

We will only get it right if we choose the right candidate for our dear party to run our election and thank God the National Assembly is doing a great job in that direction by passing the Electoral Act that stipulates that all political parties in Nigeria should adopt direct primaries as the yardstick of picking candidates for any general election. With that, my party has a chance of winning any election because these days election is about interest. It is the people that would vote. Until the right candidate is elected, we will continue to have imposition of candidates and this will lead to implosion of the political parties. It is to prevent this that the National Assembly under the leadership of Senate President, Dr Ahmed Lawan and Hon Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker passed the amended electoral act that makes direct primary compulsory for political parties. The APC is a lover of direct primary. It is only the PDP members that are against it because they know how to bribe themselves into power. In our party, majority will surely have their way while the minority will have their say.

There is a vacant seat in Akure South and North federal constituency sequel to the demise of Hon Adedayo Omolafe, what do envisage will happen in the forthcoming bye-election?

I envisage victory for our dear party, APC and that is why people like me are actively involved in the struggle to salvage Akure North and South federal constituency, change the narratives, take Akure north and south constituency to a greater height if our party by Gods grace gives me the ticket to run under the platform of APC we will surely defeat any opposition that comes our way during the election because we have the fan base, we have the support base and we have done creditably well in our community, not only to the religious rulers, the paramount ruler of Akure kingdom, the chiefs, but to the youths, and market women. I have a glorious chance of winning the coming primary election under the APC platform by Gods grace.

If you look at the Ondo Central senatorial district, the PDP dominates it. The Senator of the district and the late House of Representatives member is from the PDP. Do you think APC stands any chance in this election?

I have said it earlier that it is only if APC picks the right candidate and that right candidate is me. I have the majority. In the last election quote me we had APC members that voted for Omolafe Expensive and Senator Akinyelure, politics of about appealing to people’s consciousness. People will vote for someone they know can deliver for them, it is not about political party affiliation, it is about the person that the party puts forward to represent them in general election. People will go all out to vote; that you are in PDP does not matter at all. It is about the interest the people have in the candidate put forward by our party; that has been our gospel, that we should get it right for us to hijack the central from the PDP by filling the right candidate.

With the passage of the amended Electoral Act by the National Assembly, do you see President Muhammadu Buhari signing the law?

Definitely, because the president himself is an advocate of direct primaries, if you could recollect the primary that brought President Muhamadu Buhari for second term in our dear party is a direct primary. To elect our president for the second time, we put Buhari as our president through direct primary under APC. It is only PDP that is afraid of direct primary. If you could recollect in 1993 when MKO Abiola emerged as SDP candidate it was through direct primaries, in their general election people were counted, and that election was adjudged as the best, free, fair ever election. This present National Assembly wants to give back power to elect through the primaries, down to general election, back to the people because if you are representing your people you must emerge from the unit, you must emerge from the street. Let the polling units produce you; with that we will be having the right people to lead us aright in our country.

I asked this question because the amended Electoral Act passed by the National Assembly under the leadership of Senator Bukola Saraki was not signed by President Buhari, what gives you the impression that he will sign this one?

I have 100 percent assurance that President Buhari our president will sign it. Dr Bukola Saraki was not a loyal Senate President. A lot of bills that this present administration and present National Assembly passed to law are making our government to move forward. We have a lot of schemes in Nigeria today, if Senate did not pass it, there is no way Buhari can actualize his goals, vision and mission for our country. But under Bukola Saraki things were stagnant because Bukola Saraki saw himself as a defacto president. Both chambers have passed the amended bill and I can assure you, in the coming weeks you will see the leadership of both chambers going to the President presenting the bill and the thing will be signed; mind you it is what we do today that will give us the hope of 2023 election, how it is going to be in our dear country and there is no need to delay, I am very 100 percent sure that Mr President will sign that bill because he is an advocate of direct primary and giving power back to the people. He has said it repeatedly that let people choose who they want to rule them, let people choose their representatives, let people choose their leaders instead of imposition here and there that is causing a lot of havoc among our political parties.

What do you think was in the mind of the National Assembly when they were working on this amended Electoral Act?

It is to give back power to our people, let people have it and let them have their way, let people choose, you don’t impose on them. If they want you, they will vote for you. The National Assembly wants the people to choose leaders for themselves. It is that time for our country will go higher.

Initially, the National Assembly was not comfortable with the passage Electoral Act that allows transfer of result through electronic method, what transpired before the new change of mind?

They all agreed to the transfer of result electronically. It was only the PDP members that were saying APC was afraid to allow electronic transmission of result, they all agreed that electronically they should transfer result to the appropriate collation centers. But the clause that brought the argument was in the area where it said where is practicable. Not all our communities are widely covered with all the networks we have in Nigeria. People from some remote area in some local government have no network coverage, some senators said network is not even in their place and that how can INEC transfer election result from where there is no coverage to coalition center? They need answers from INEC and INEC has done its work together with the Nation Communication Commission. They have convinced them and that was what brought about the agreement about the electronic transmission of results. The National Assembly wants something that will make life meaningful for our citizens and that is one of the reasons they agreed for direct primaries and electronic transfer of result from one place to another so that this will reduce people influencing INEC officials to rig election for them, it is the vote of electorate that will be transferred immediately. So, there is no need for you to give INEC official millions of Naira to upturn the will of the masses. The assembly has done a very creditable and wonderful job to give power back to the people.

Do you have comment on other national issues?

I will start by saying that in the United States of America there was retrenchment of workers during COVID 19 pandemic and I cannot see any state in Nigeria or the federal government retrenching any workers in this country. God has been so faithful to this country; yes we may have some difficulties in our economy, which is global, the economic meltdown is globally, all nations in the world not only in Nigeria have economic challenges.

In the security aspect, the government is trying to curb the menace of these terrorists Boko Haram, bandits and kidnappers. it is a global challenge so it not limited to Nigeria alone, it’s a global thing but we thank God that against all odds we are still surviving, yes we might not have reached fifty percent in my own view. The President is trying to curb insecurity; you can quote me anywhere, the present administration under the leadership of President Buhari has the largest scheme that affects lives of our farmers and masses through survival funds. With all these schemes, Nigeria will get to the promise land. I can assure you that we will be better under the leadership of Buhari, yes we might have some blemishes but not withstanding we will survive it.

CBN rule bars BVN violators from opening bank accounts

It will no longer be business as usual for violators of Bank Verification Number (BVN). They have been barred from opening new bank accounts going by a fresh Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rule.

The new policy is contained in a Revised Regulatory Framework for Bank Verification Number (BVN) operations and Watch-List for the banking industry released by the apex bank in its Update Report circular.

According to the bank, the new framework has been designed to enhance the effectiveness of customer due diligence and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes.

The CBN described the policy as part of its overall strategy for promoting a safe and efficient banking and payment system.

In the circular, the Director, Payments System Management Department, Musa Jimoh, explained that the watch-list is a database of customers identified by their BVNs, who have been involved in confirmed cases of breaches.

He explained that under the new framework, breaches on the part of customer could see the individual getting barred from entering a new relationship with any participant (banks).

Musa said that where a financial institution chooses to continue an existing business relationship with holders of an account/wallets on the watch-list, the account holder shall be prohibited from all electronic channels such as but not limited to Automated Teller Machine, Point of Sale , Internet Banking, Mobile Banking, USSD including the issuance of third- party cheques.

He said: “The new framework further stipulates that a customer with watch-listed BVN shall not reference accounts, access or guarantee credit facilities, thus, breaches it continued on the customer’s part include – use of forged documents, forgery, compromise, complicity and connivance.

“Also listed as punishable breaches were: duplicate enrolment, use of fictitious information, receipts of proceeds of deception, deception, receipts of fraudulent proceeds and any infractions on Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) laws, and dishonest acts.

“Others were non-cooperation with efforts (as stipulated in the Regulation on Instant Interbank Electronic Funds Transfer) to reverse wrong credit, erroneous, multiple or duplicated payments or credits; and any infringement of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act. 2015.

The director also said that those who misuse identity and financial information and indulge in identity theft and breach of confidentiality will be punished in line with the new regulations.

“Banks and other financial institutions involved in BVN operations were instructed by the CBN to ensure all operating accounts/wallets are linked with the signatories’ BVNs within 24 hours of availability,” the circular said.

The CBN also instructed that operators must enroll all mobile money wallets (except Tier 1) subscribers on the BVN database and link their wallets (except Tier 1) with their BVNs within 180 days of the issuance of this framework.

The CBN, however, said it would continue to monitor industry developments and issue further guidance as might be appropriate in the nearest future.

The regulator said money laundering requires an underlying, primary profit-making crime (such as corruption, drug trafficking, market manipulation, fraud, tax evasion), along with the intent to conceal the proceeds of the crime or to further the criminal enterprise.

These activities, it added, generate financial flows that involve the diversion of resources from economically and socially-productive uses.

The diversions, the circular noted, can have negative impacts on the financial sector and external stability of the economy.

    • Agency neutral on direct primary

    • ACF chieftain urges Buhari to sign bill

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is awaiting the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari on either direct or indirect primary for the 2023 elections.

The National Assembly has forwarded the Electoral Bill 2021 to the President for assent.

But, the direct primary has led to a sharp disagreement among the National Assembly, governors and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Although a meeting was convened at the Presidential Villa at the instance of the President to resolve the dispute over direct or indirect primary, it ended in a stalemate.

The two chambers of the National Assembly went ahead to pass the Electoral Bill 2021 into law.

The decision of the President will, however, determine the mode of primary to adopt by the electoral commission.

Yesterday, APC governors  converged on Kebbi State Governor’s Lodge, Abuja, as from 8:45pm to deliberate on the contentious issue.

Former Secretary-General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Chief Anthony Sani, said Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors’ and lawmakers’ opposition to direct primary is devoid of morality and wisdom.

He said the direct primary would not only put an end to plutocracy and abuse of incumbency but also reduce the prevalent incidence of imposition of candidates often associated with governors and money bags during the indirect primary.

A National Commissioner of INEC, who spoke in confidence, said: “We actually do not have a choice in this matter. We are awaiting the final decision of the President.

“Any mode of primary signed into law by the President is what we will adopt.

“We will require a lot of logistics if it is direct primary. It means we have to supervise the primaries of all registered parties from Ward to Local Government, State and National levels. Certainly, we need huge resources for direct primary.

“But whatever is assented to is what we will work with, whether direct or indirect primary.”

The bill was forwarded to the President in a November 18, 2021 letter, which was signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mr. Ojo Olatunde Amos.

The letter reads in part: “ In consonance with the provisions of the Acts Authentication Act Cap. A2, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, I wish, with due respect, to forward to Your Excellency, the authenticated copies of Electoral Bill, 2021 for your consideration and assent.

“After Your Excellency’s assent, one copy of the signed Bill should be retained in your office while the other two are to be returned for our further action, please. With my highest regards.”

A ranking senator said: “With the transmission, the governors have lost the battle to reverse our decision on the direct primary which we took in the overall interest of our democracy.

“Our position is that we must put an end to impunity and imposition of candidates. Let all those who want to contest in 2023 emerge through a free and fair process.

“We won’t allow any group of people to sit in a place to fix candidates for elective offices.”

It was, however, gathered that governors have been lobbying to prevail on the President not to sign the bill into law.

The battle has shifted to the Presidential Villa, with the governors and the National Assembly selling the merits and demerits of direct primary and indirect primary.

A presidential source said: “It is now left to the President to scrutinise the bill with strategic members of his cabinet and advisers.

“The President cannot rush into the signing of a bill into law. After a careful study, he will make his position known to Nigerians. The truth is that the mode of primaries is just an aspect of the bill.”

A governor confirmed that most governors have a preference for indirect primary because of cost.

“Left to the governors, we want indirect primary because it is cost-effective and it will reduce intra-party crisis to a manageable level.

“The direct primary will cost all the parties much money which they cannot afford. It is a populist approach but it can lead to squabbles within the parties. This approach may lead to litigations, which can hamper the conduct of the 2023 elections.

“We are also selling our idea to the President to withhold assent until the indirect primary clause is restored to the bill.

“Forget the excuses of senators and members of the House of Representatives on imposition. Are governors not closer to the grassroots than they are?

“Can any of the lawmakers win a primary without the backing of his governor? Whichever method is adopted, a governor will still be in control.”
