  • BREAKING: Southern Govs insist on power rotation in 2023-Akeredolu

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

Ondo Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has reiterated the Southern Governors Forum would not back down on its agitation for zoning of the Presidency to the region in 2023.

Akeredolu said the forum would resist any political party that fields a northerner as presidential candidate.

Speaking at a television programme monitored by The Nation, the Governor said the Southern Governors will pursue the agitation to the letter because they were unanimous in their resolution on zoning.

Akeredolu, who is also Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum, said: “If we have anything that we have agreed, that we have unanimity, it is the issue of president in 2023.

“All of us, irrespective of our political party; there are three political parties that are in the Southern Governors Forum. We have the All Progressives Grand Alliance, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the All Progressives Congress and we all agreed on this.

“Any party that picks any candidate from the North will have to face all Southern governors because they will not support. But it has to come from the South. We are saying that there must be rotational, justice, and fairness in it, that is what we are pushing.

“If my President, Muhammadu Buhari has ruled for eight years, then it cannot be from the North again. The next president must come from the South. We have not got to the stage where we will say let us give it to somebody who is competent.

“There are many people that are competent. We have competent people in the North as we have competent people in the South.

“So, the President can come from any part of the country. But if you have occupied the position for eight years, then it has to rotate back to the South.

“We can continue to do that until it gets to a point where the issue of zoning becomes an anathema. But for now, zoning is it and those of us from the South are determined that the next president comes from the South.”

On the issue of grazing route, Akeredolu said his administration would reject funding to trace any grazing routes in Ondo State.

Akeredolu said his administration supported ranching and not open grazing.

“Ondo State has not received any money. But if money is being given out to trace grazing routes, you can be sure that Ondo State will not receive that.

“There is no grazing route anywhere. We are not going to allow that to happen. We have seen modern animal husbandry. That is what should be our concern now. We are not to allow routes; routes to where?”

“Ondo is one of the States that have signed the anti-grazing bill into law.
We are saying you will not graze in the open. We have passed the law. So, there is no route we are going to allow anybody to trace in Ondo State.

“What we have said is very clear. But if there is money for us to have ranches, we are encouraging ranching. There is nothing wrong with it. I have always argued this point.”

  • DRAMA: Couple who snatched mad woman’s baby meet waterloo

    Suspects admit guilt, trade blame

Wife: My husband didn’t tell me he was impotent, he starved me of sex for 16 years

Husband: My wife didn’t tell me she has damaged womb, can’t bear children

    Linus OOTA, Lafia

It was a dramatic moment at Agwa Tashi community, Obi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State on Monday as a couple, Mr Thomas Agba and his wife Mary, were arrested by a combination of some vigilante group members and a few elders of the community for stealing a new born baby belonging to a mad woman.

The couple, who before now were resident in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, had been married for 16 years without an issue. Their relationship had begun when Thomas, an indigene of Kokona LGA, met Mary, who hails from Wamba Local Government Area, and proposed marriage to her. They agreed to get married after a courtship that lasted about six months.

It was gathered that the couple agreed not to have sex before they would get married. Mary, however kept secret the fact that she had lost her womb during an abortion she had as a spinster while Thomas also kept secret the fact that he had been impotent from birth.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with our correspondent, Mary said: “Before I got married 16 years ago, my husband and I never made love.

“He was the first to suggest that we should not have sex until he paid my dowry. He always told me that we should wait until we got married. Unfortunately, I never knew that he was avoiding sex because he was impotent.

“Since we got married, he has not been doing his job as a husband and that always made me sad.

“Each time I confronted him with sex issues, he would either say he was not in the mood or ask that we should adjourn the matter till the next day.

“For 16 years, he kept giving me one excuse or the other, so we never had sex.

“Barely a year after our marriage, I discovered that he was an impotent man. There is no complete man on earth who will spend one year with a woman on the same bed without sex, more so your own wife.

“Many times I tried to seduce him by giving him the best of romantic kisses and wearing sexy clothes at night just to entice him, but his manhood would not stand at all.

“To make matters worse, he has never asked me for sex since we got married.

“I was depressed by the situation, so almost every night, I cried and cried because I didn’t know what to do.

“Right inside me, I also know that I don’t have a womb to conceive a baby even if my husband was a man. But the truth is that I love him so much and I did not want to commit adultery or cheat on him.”

Mary added that since her womb got damaged, it was clear to her that she would have a problem with child bearing when she got married.

She said: “Whenever a new couple gets married and later gives birth, I feel happy for them. But when I realise that I will never have the same experience, tears roll down my cheeks. The joy of every family is to bear children.

“Sometime late last year, I woke up early in the morning and summoned courage to tell my husband the truth. I told him to his face that he is an impotent man and there is no way he can impregnate me for us to bear children.

“He admitted it, telling me that he grew up to discover that he was impotent. I also seized the chance to tell him that I also cannot bear a child because my womb is damaged.

“I told him that even if he was man enough, it would be impossible for me to take in. I them suggested that there were two options open to us since we were both tired of people asking why pregnancy had not come.

“I suggested that we should adopt a baby and move to another location to give the impression that it is our biological baby.

“On a second thought, I remembered that there was a mad pregnant woman around our area, so I decided that we should monitor her, draw her close to us and take her baby as soon as she was delivered of it instead of going through the long process of adopting a child in Abuja.

“We both agreed to the idea and I started drawing the mad woman close to me by providing for her needs and somehow she became used to me.

“She hardly spoke, but due to my closeness to her because of the food I was giving her, she managed to tell me how she was impregnated by a man whose location she could not really say.

“She also said that she was expected to give birth in July, although she ended up delivering in September.

“She went into labour in the night on September 7. Around that time, she was always in our compound, because I was providing for her necessities and our house was not far from the main road.

“We immediately rushed her to the hospital and after about five hours of labour, she was delivered of a baby boy. We spent two days in the hospital to normalise her.

“While we were in the hospital, I sold the idea of snatching the baby from the mad woman to my husband and change our base from Akwanga to  Lafia.

“When she was discharged from the hospital, with my husband’s car, we left the hospital in Akwanga, drove straight to Lafia and headed straight to Awe LGA where we arranged for a friend who is a medical personel to give her some injection to calm down her breast milk.

“We dumped her somewhere in Awe LG and returned to Agwa Tashi in Obi LG with the baby.

“The mad woman’s deficiency, which we took advantage of, is that she hardly talks. She prefers to talk alone than to talk to people.

“I had already bought baby food and feeding bottle and prepared hot water in case he would start crying on the road.

“So we abandoned the mad woman in Awe and relocated to Obi to settle there temporarily. Our intention was to move back to Lafia after one year and settle there permanently.

    “My husband is a businessman.”

Our correspondent gathered that while many people around Akwanga had noticed the sudden disappearance of the mad woman, none felt any need to probe into her case.

Mary said: “One week after, the new born baby was not feeling so strong, so we took him to Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital for treatment.

“As we were trying to locate the children ward, we did not know that a former neighbour of ours in Akwanga was involved in an accident and was admitted at the hospital.

“His wife saw us with a baby and was visibly shocked. From that moment, she knew that we must have snatched the mad woman’s baby, more so because she knew that the mad woman was close to us and her whereabouts had become a source of concern.

“She quickly returned home and informed a few other people who later told some members of the vigilante group about our new location.”

Mary, who pleaded with the team not to thank her over to law enforcement agents, said she could not bear any child because her womb was damaged by a quack doctor during an abortion she had as secondary school pupil, adding that she did what she did out of frustration.

She said: “When I met Thomas about16 years ago, he loved me so much and I equally loved him. So, when he proposed marriage to me, I quickly obliged and could not tell the truth because I didn’t want to lose him.”

Also speaking, Thomas, who also pleaded that security agents should not be involved in the matter, admitted that he was impotent, adding that desperation to have a child led him to accept his wife’s proposal.

He said that they both have themselves to blame for not being sincere about their conditions from the outset.

He said: “We both lied to each other and it landed us in this mess. Please and please, you people should have mercy, pity our condition and look at our case. It was desperation to have a child that led us into this evil plan.”

The couple has since led some members of the vigilante group to Awe in search of the mad woman.

The matter was yet to be reported to the police at press time as the vigilante men insist on finding the mad woman before involving the police in it.

Igboho: FG vows to appeal as court slams N20bn damages on DSS

By Eric Ikhilae, Nicholas Kalu, Abuja; Alao Abiodun; and Gbenga Aderanti

    • Judge flays raid on agitator’s Ibadan home as unlawful

    • Malami: Govt studying judgment, will take necessary measures

The Federal Government vowed on Friday to appeal a judgment by the High Court in Oyo State directing the Department of State Security (DSS) to pay N20 billion to detained Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo.

The supporters of Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, had exploded in celebration yesterday after the pronouncement by Justice Ladiran Akintola of Oyo State High Court directing the security outfit to pay the said sum for unlawfully invading his Soka, Ibadan house on July 1.

Igboho had sued the AGF, the DSS and the Director of the DSS in Oyo State, demanding ?500 million as special damages for the damage done to his house and his car and another ?500 billion as exemplary and aggravated damages for beaching his fundamental rights.

Two persons were reportedly killed while 12 others were arrested following the raid, but 10 of the people arrested have since been released.

Reacting to the judgment, many supporters of Igboho danced in ecstasy as they sang the Yoruba Nation anthem while some others chanted, “Yoruba Nation, no going back!”

Sheikh Abdul Raheem Aduanigba, the Chief Imam of Yoruba in Ilorin, who also joined Igboho’s supporters to celebrate the judgment said: “What is happening in Nigeria at the moment requires patience. The Yoruba at the moment are showing solidarity for Igboho. When Buhari was going to contest for Presidency, the Yoruba gave him support, but he has failed us.”

He urged the neighbouring Benin Republic where Igboho was being detained to “take a cue from the judgment, which is a testament that Igboho is law-abiding and did not foment trouble at any rally across the Southwest states.”

The umbrella body of the Yoruba self-determination group, Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO), also asked the DSS to pay the N20 billion damages in the interest of peace.

Led by a renowned historian, Prof Banji Akintoye, the group, in a statement signed by its Communications Secretary, Mr. Maxwell Adeleye, expressed appreciation to the judge for re-affirming self-determination as one of the fundamental human rights of the citizens.

“We thank the judiciary for re-affirming that self-determination is one of the fundamental human rights of the citizens that cannot be subjugated.

“Our position is that this verdict symbolises the triumph of light and truth over darkness. Ighoho represents the light and truth, while the Nigerian state stands for illegalities.

“Our position now is that the Nigerian government should be honourable by respecting the verdict of a court of competent jurisdiction.

“The N20 billion damages ordered by the court to be paid to Ighoho by the DSS must be paid with immediate effect in the interest of peace,” the group said.

Also reacting to the judgment, a lawyer and the Director of Legal Affairs, Yoruba Koya Leadership and Training Foundation, Barrister Tayo Douglas, said: “What this judgment portends is that citizens’ lives and their rights matter a lot and the government must always do everything to protect and preserve those lives and rights.

“It is awkward to even think that an organ of government, so called DSS, could just decide to storm people’s houses at odd hours to carry out whatsoever operations, leading to maiming, killing and destruction of lives and properties.”

He condemned the attack on Igboho’s residence, saying such an act is not part of a democratic set up.

“That judgment stands to tell the world that the DSS can never constitute itself into an accuser and as well a judge in its own cause.

“There are better and civilised ways to arrest citizens than turning a Gestapo,” Douglas added.

He advised the supporters of the activist to go about their normal duties as citizens, adding that the way forward for Igboho is to face his case and defend himself.

“And where he still believes he has remedies he should also pursue diligently,” he added.

FG will study judgment, appeal, says Malami

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, said yesterday that the federal government was studying the judgment and would appeal it.

His Special Assistant on Media, Dr. Umar Gwandu said the Federal Government would take necessary steps.

“The Federal Government will study the judgment and appeal. All necessary measures will be taken,” he said.

The Department of State Services (DSS) kept mum over the court judgment on Friday.

Calls made by one of our correspondents to the spokesman of the DSS, Dr Peter Afunanya, went unanswered.

He, however, responded to a WhatsApp message requesting his response, saying, “No comments.”

  • BDCs funding Boko Haram, kidnappings, says CBN

    By Nduka Chiejina (Assistant Editor)

    • Launches manhunt for the owner of Aboki FX

    • Retains interest rate at 11.5%

For the first time, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revealed that Bureaux de Changes (BDCs) were funding terrorism and kidnapping in the country.

Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the CBN made this disclosure in Abuja on Friday after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.

Emefiele, before making the revelation had vowed that the CBN would not rescind its decision to ban the sale of foreign exchange to BDCs.

Shedding more light on why the apex bank took the decision, Emefiele noted that the CBN has resolved to stop funding BDCs by dipping into the nation’s foreign reserve to fund BDCs all for the sake of stabilizing the forex market.

According to him, “we have decided that this will stop and it has stopped for good. It beats my imagination that Nigeria carried on with this kind of practice that tended to support illegal activities of people who are involved in graft and involved in corrupt practices.”

He added that “instead of collecting Naira as a bribe you tell the person to exchange it to dollar so that you can have some packet of dollars in your pocket.”

Another reason for the decision he said is that “we have unwittingly supported activities of those who illegally buy foreign exchange from this illegal market, carry them in aircrafts out of the country and go to buy arms and ammunition and bring them back into the country and conduct crime whether it is Boko Haram, kidnapping or all sorts of nefarious activities. We the CBN take our country’s dollar and sell to people to go and buy arms ammunition to come and hurt us. That is what we are saying that people want us to continue to do. We cannot do that any longer.”

Emefiele told bank customers with legitimate requests for forex that exceeds the official limit that, “your bank will speak to us and we will give you what is even more than the limit. We will continue to monitor the banks.

“We conducted a study, one of the banks sold in one day  forex to 52 people who wanted to travel. After two weeks, they went to check, 40 out of the 52 have cancelled their ticket. They will have to return the forex or we will pursue you if you are involved in this nefarious activity. We are not going to go back there again.”

Emefiele also disclosed that the CBN will launch a manhunt for the owner of Aboki FX an online forex dealing platform.

The CBN he said “wrote a memo to banks and asked those banks to provide information about Aboki FX. We are have been studying the activities of Aboki FX in the last two and a half years. The CBN once invited the owner of Aboki FX that they want to engage him to understand his model, basis and how he came about advertising those rates.”

Emefiele described him as “a Nigerian who lives in England and conducts this nefarious activity and criminal activity on our economy. It is an economic sabotage and we will pursue him. We will report him to international security agencies. We will track him. We will find you because we cannot allow you to continue to conduct illegal activities that kill our economy.”

The CBN governor disclosed that “preliminary finds reveal that the company was registered in the UK in November 2015 and it is owned by one person who claims in his regular filings that there are other people with significant interest in that business but he does not want to name them. So, who are these significant people? Why are they hiding?”

Again Emefiele said “preliminary findings suggest this website was built and is being used purely for the purpose of foreign exchange manipulation and speculation.  They get Naira notes,  use it to purchase dollars, take a position, change the rate over a given period, sell the dollars they purchase and make a profit. This is completely illegal and we will pursue them.

Another findings he said showed that the owner of Aboki FX “is an illegal FX dealer. Between February 2020 and May 2021, he had inflow and sold tens of millions of Naira in FX to several Nigerian companies, and we will find those companies as well, in contravention of our FX laws because he is an illegal FX dealer.”

The owner of Aboki FX he said, “directly benefits from the rates quoted daily on his website. We are finalizing our investigation and we must warn these companies that patronize him that they are also going to face our wrath.”

With regards to the MPC meeting, Emefiele said members of the Committee unanimously voted to retain the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 11.5 per cent; retain the MPR at 11.5 per cent; retain the Asymmetric Corridor of +100/-700 basis points around the MPR; retain the CRR at 27.5 per cent; and retain the Liquidity Ratio at 30 per cent.

However, before taking that decision, he said the committee was worried that “the increasing level of insecurity in parts of the country remained a crucial point of concern for the MPC as its persistence could adversely impact business confidence and derail the recovery”.

As a result of the level of insecurity in the country, the MPC he said has called “on the Federal Government to prioritize security surveillance in farming communities as the increased supply of food would play a significant role in stabilizing macroeconomic fundamentals.”

Aboki FX, has however,  said  it would no longer publish exchange rates for now and hoped that the naira would stabilise.

The online foreign exchange update platform in a statement on Friday said: “Aboki FX is fully functional but we will not be publishing any form of rates on our platform for now. We sincerely hope this suspension will lead to the naira appreciation from next week. With our decision to temporarily suspend online rate publication, we are aware that there will be limited visibility of parallel rates information which will impact decision making for many,” it said.

The platform denied manipulating the market, adding that there was no way it could have such power.

  • FG to appeal N20bn damages against DSS – Malami

    Agency Reporter

The Federal Government is to appeal the judgment of an Oyo State High Court which awarded N20 billion in damages against the Attorney-General of the Federation(AGF) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The AGF, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), announced the decision of the Federal Government to appeal the judgment while speaking on the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

The suit, bordering on fundamental human rights was brought by self-styled Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo.

The court, sitting in Ibadan awarded N20 billion in damages against the AGF and the DSS over the alleged invasion of the residence of Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho on July 1 this year at the Soka area of the Oyo State capital.

Malami said that efforts were already being made to commence the process of appealing the judgment.

NAN recalls that Igboho’s Counsel, Mr Yomi Alliyu (SAN), had filed a N500 billion fundamental human rights enforcement suit against the AGF, DSS and Director of the DSS in Oyo State over the incident.

Alliyu also claimed that his client’s house and cars were damaged, while two occupants of the house were killed by security agents during the incident.

But Counsel to the AGF, Mr Abdullah Abubakar, had argued that there was no evidence before the court that the blood seen in the video clip tendered by Alliyu belonged to a human being.

Abubakar also said that there was nothing in the video clip that showed that the house that was invaded belonged to Igboho or linked the AGF with the invasion.

He had urged the court to disregard the exhibits and dismiss the entire suit.

The Counsel to the DSS, Mr T. A. Nurudeen, aligned with the submission made by the counsel to AGF, insisting that there must be proof from a hematologist to show that the blood seen in the video belonged to a human being.

Nurudeen also tendered a video clip which was admitted by the court, where Igboho allegedly threatened to create an Oduduwa Republic, while urging the Yoruba to protect themselves with charms and guns.

However, delivering his judgment, Justice Ladiran Akintola, said the style and procedures adopted by the DSS during the incident was unprofessional.

Akintola said that the applicant had demonstrated to the court that his fundamental right to personal liberty, right to life and blocking of his account amounted to violation of his fundamental rights.

He awarded N20 billion as exemplary and aggravated damage in favour of the applicant and N2 million cost also in favour of the applicant for instituting the case.

FG vows to shut down popular exchange rate website Aboki FX

The Federal Government has declared it will shut down the operations of Aboki FX, a website offering currency exchange information.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) described the website as an illegal and criminal platform.

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, told reporters on Friday that it will also prosecute the owner of the platform, Olusegun Oniwinde.

According to him: “I have given instructions to our experts to go after his website and let it be clear that we will go after him because we can’t allow this to continue.”

He said the CBN doesn’t recognize any forex market window besides the Investors and Exporters window.

On ban of forex sales to Bureau de Change operators, Emefiele said that the bank will not go back on its previous stance.

According to him, these BDC operators sell foreign exchange to criminals who import weapons to harm Nigerians and promote different forms of terrorism.

The CBN Governor said: “It truly beats my imagination that Nigerians continued with this type of practice (selling dollars to BDC) that tended to promote illegal activities who are involved in graft and corrupt practices.

“We won’t support the corrupt tendencies of those who illegally buy dollars from our forex market, carry them in aircraft, buy arms and ammunition and bring them back into the country and conduct crimes. Whether it is Boko Haram, banditry and other nefarious activities.

“Why will CBN give people our forex to go and buy arms? And that is what people want us to continue to do. We cannot do that. What we are saying is that if you have any legitimate need for forex, take it to the bank and they will sell you FOREX.”

  • 2023: No automatic ticket for Jonathan, new defectors – APC

    By Jide Orintunsin, Abuja

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said it has not granted an automatic ticket to former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is been rumoured to be planning to defect to the party ahead of 2023 general elections.

It also said that waiver granted new defectors does not exclude them from undergoing nomination processes of contesting for positions in the party and as its flag bearers in general elections.

APC Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) Secretary, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, made these declarations in a statement in Abuja on Friday.

He said defection into the party by any person does not confer the status of an automatic candidate of the party on such individual.

Akpanudoedehe, who was reacting to a misrepresentation of his views on the waiver granted new entrants and defectors by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) at its December 8, 2020 meeting in a television programme, said all party members, irrespective of the status of the person must go through the party’s nomination process as outlined in it’s the constitution.

He maintained that the waiver by NEC was not restricted to anyone.

According to the Secretary: “The waiver is not specific to anyone as being misconstrued and misrepresented in some sections.

“Coming into the party gives no one special status of being an automatic party candidate in any election. All aspirants must undergo the nomination processes outlined by the APC constitution.”

Akpanudoedehe recalled that the party’s NEC resolved and granted waivers to persons who have recently joined the party and those desirous of joining the party in the nearest future to contest for positions in the APC and as party flag bearers in general elections.

He explained that by the NEC resolution, “new members will enjoy all the benefits and privileges accruable by the APC” but not the status of automatic candidate of the party.”

According to him: “For the records, in my recent television interview reaction to the rumoured plans by former President Goodluck Jonathan to join the APC, my statement was that NEC resolution was a blanket waiver to ALL new APC entrants, including the interviewee.

“The waiver is not specific to anyone as being misconstrued and misrepresented in some sections. Coming into the party gives no one special status of being an automatic party candidate in any election. All aspirants must undergo the nomination processes outlined by the APC constitution.

“Excerpts of APC NEC 8th December 2020 resolution reads: “…new members will enjoy all the benefits and privileges accruable by virtue of their membership of the party. So, they will be able to contest for positions in the party. They will be able to contest elections without any requirement of being members for several years or period.”

Bawa said he would be heading to Ibadan after the event in Abuja.

Suddenly, his expression became a bit contorted and he rubbed his face momentarily as if to control the apparent dizziness that appeared on it.  The EFCC boss tried to control his poise but it appeared he was about to fall.

He left the podium in haste and sat down where some of the guests attended to him before he was reportedly conveyed to a hospital for treatment.
