PDP factions set for showdown at national secretariat

    • Different groups fix meetings for Wadata Plaza

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in two broad factions over the contentious national secretary office have fixed two meetings at the national secretariat today.

National Chairman Umar Damagum, who last week announced the postponement of today’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting following the party leaders’ meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday said a meeting of stakeholders will instead be held today.

Having announced the recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, both of them signed the invitation for today’s meeting.

On the other hand, backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja denounced the recognition of Anyanwu and said, alongside ten other National Working Committee (NWC) members, that the NEC meeting could not be unilaterally shifted by Damagum.

He said the 100th NEC meeting was fixed by the 99th NEC and that it is only the NEC that can vary its decision.

Yesterday, he announced that the NEC meeting will be held today, also at the National Secretariat.

The group last night got the backing of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who reiterated that the return of Anyanwu could push the Southeast Caucus, which is backing Sunday Ude-Okoye for the position, out of the party.

Some of the key leaders of the party supporting Damagum are: PDP Governors’ Forum Chair Bala Mohammed (Bauchi); Chairman of the party’s Strategy/Reconciliation Committee Senator Bukola Saraki; Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike and Secretary of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

On the other group, apart from Arapaja, Makinde and Mbah, there are BoT chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, BoT member Chief Olabode George and some NWC members, including Deputy National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo and publicity secretary Debo Ologunagba.

Anyanwu issued a notice for an expanded National Caucus Meeting, outlining the list of chieftains expected.

According to the notice, the caucus meeting would kick off at 2pm.

However, Arapaja said in a statement that only the NEC meeting will take place at the same venue at 9am.

According to the PDP constitution, the resolution of the National Caucus is advisory, but the NEC is the highest decision-making body, after the National Convention, with powers to dissolve the National Working Committee (NWC) headed by Damagum.

Expected at the meeting are statutory members of the National Caucus, Deputy National Officers, BoT members, all state chairmen, all members of the National Assembly Caucus, former NWC members, National Ex-Officio Members, former governors, and immediate-past governorship candidates.

However, Arapaja, who said the NEC meeting would start at 9 am, stressed that it was the resolution of the last meeting.

He said: “We further update all members of the PDP and the general public on the activities of the party, especially with regard to the 100th meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) statutorily scheduled for tomorrow (today), Monday, 30th June, 2025 and the National Convention scheduled for Thursday 28th to Saturday, 30th August 2025.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the National Working Committee (NWC) assures all party members that the 100th NEC meeting will proceed as scheduled on Monday, 30th June 2025 at the NEC Hall of the Wadata Plaza, PDP National Secretariat, Abuja.

“The 100th NEC meeting will, among other things, receive updates on the activities of the Zoning Committee and the National Convention Organising Committee.

“As you are aware, the 100th meeting was unanimously scheduled by NEC at its 99th meeting held on Tuesday, 27th May, 2025.

“By virtue of Section 31(3) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017) the Monday, 30th June 2025 date for the 100th NEC meeting is binding on all organs and members, and as such no organ, group or officer of the party has the power to alter, change, vary, veto or convert the already convened NEC meeting.

“Contrary to a purported notice being circulated in the social media suggesting that the 100th NEC meeting has been converted to a Special Expanded National Caucus meeting, the NWC states in clear terms that the said notice did not emanate from the PDP and should be disregarded.

“The NWC emphasises that there is no provision whatsoever for an ‘Expanded National Caucus’ in the constitution of the PDP or any guideline of the party.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 30 of the Constitution of the PDP is unambiguous in providing for a National Caucus for the party with its composition, functions, and meetings clearly spelt out, leaving no room for any form of expansion.

“The suggestion, proposal or announcement for a ‘Special Expanded National Caucus meeting’ is therefore unconstitutional and cannot take any decision for the PDP, being not a recognised organ or body in the PDP.”

    Mbah okays today’s NEC meeting

Governor Mbah endorsed the position of the Southeast Zonal Executive Committee, Board of Trustees (BoT) and a section of the divided NWC on the protracted leadership crisis.

He also re-echoed the threat by the Southeast Caucus to review its relationship with the party if Udeh-Okoye is not allowed to take over from Senator Anyanwu as National Secretary.

Mbah, who supported those pushing for the NEC meeting today, said he is “simply fed up with the shenanigans that have more or less made the party an endless circus.”

The governor spoke with reporters on the festering crisis in Enugu, the state capital, after a meeting with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, and National Vice Chairman (Southeast) Chief Ali Odefa.

The positions of the Southeast Caucus, BoT and a section of the NWC are that the Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo, should act as Secretary, and the NEC meeting should be held today in Abuja.

The positions tally with that of the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

But after a meeting with INEC last week, Damagum directed Anyanwu to return to the office as Secretary,  in accordance with the outcome of the parley.

Mbah said: “For the record, just as I stated during my interactive session with fellows and members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu at the weekend, while I am still a member of the PDP, the Southeast – and that includes me – reserves the right to review our continued membership of the party if the party is unwilling to put its house in order.

“That was invariably the position adopted during our last Southeast Zonal meeting held here in Enugu.

“During that meeting, the caucus noted that the party should not disregard the zone’s stand regarding the national secretary position.

“To all intents and purposes, this has obviously not been the case. So, there is no doubt as to where I stand on the matter.

“The position of the Southeast with respect to the national secretaryship of the party as issued in that communique is sacrosanct,” he stated.

Other PDP chieftains at the meeting included a former National Chairman and BOT member, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo; Senator Sam Egwu, Iyom Josephine Anenih, Senator Ben Obi, and Udeh-Okoye.

    More defections likely, says Saraki

Saraki, who spoke on television, warned that more chieftains may leave the party if the crisis is not resolved.

He said: “PDP would likely see one or two more defections, and we should prepare ourselves for that. There is a possibility.

“We haven’t seen the worst of the defections for PDP. We would probably see maybe one or two governors who will defect, and we might see some senators who will defect.

“For some of us, this happening early in PDP is an advantage. We are lucky that this is not happening, let’s say late 2026. We would not even have had time to recover and regroup.

“We have just under two years to the general election, and we are lucky to have that. I think, with a lot of commitment and understanding, it is not a lost cause.

“A party of over 26 years of history, that has been around, the largest party, we will definitely have low times like this.”

PDP has lost two governors and their supporters – Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta) and Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom) –  to the APC.

Saraki described the unresolved dispute as the major obstacle preventing the PDP from convening a proper NEC meeting and organising a credible national convention.

Saraki confirmed that INEC recognises Anyanwu as the legitimate PDP secretary, based on a Supreme Court judgment delivered on March 21, 2025.

He noted that a recent meeting between PDP leaders and INEC helped clarify the commission’s position.

Saraki called for the emergence of a younger, forward-looking leadership at the next party convention.

He added: “This is not just about resolving today’s issues. It’s about building for the future.

“The next convention must not be business as usual. We must bring in new, younger faces who represent the future of this party.

“If PDP fails, Nigeria edges closer to a one-party state. And that would be a disaster for democracy.”

  • Presidency defends Tinubu’s visit to Saint Lucia

Presidency defends Tinubu’s visit to Saint Lucia

The Presidency has  defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to Saint Lucia, saying those   questioning the purpose were “misguided,  mischievous, and uninformed.”

It described the visit as a historic and strategic engagement rooted in deep ancestral, diplomatic, economic and cultural ties between Nigeria and the Caribbean.

“From the perspective of the Government of Saint Lucia, the visit by the Nigerian leader paves the way for the rekindling of our ancestral bonds, igniting a new era of diplomatic, cultural, and economic possibilities between our nations,”  said the President in a statement by  Bayo Onanuga,    special adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

The visit, according to the Presidency,  marks President Tinubu as the first Nigerian leader to undertake a state visit to Saint Lucia,  an island country of the West Indies,    North America, with a population of 179,285 people.

Its economic mainstay is tourism and agriculture, with bananas being a key export.

Saint Lucia is a member of both the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

With a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) exceeding $130 billion, CARICOM presents significant potential for South-South cooperation, trade, and development.

The statement highlighted that many Caribbean nations, including Saint Lucia, have populations with significant Nigerian ancestry.

In the mid-19th Century, waves of immigrants from present-day Nigeria settled in the island nation, bringing cultural and religious traditions that remain part of Saint Lucian society today.

Reinforcing these historical links, the Presidency noted the legacy of Sir Darnley Alexander, a Saint Lucian-born jurist who served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1975 to 1979.

Alexander, who migrated to Nigeria in 1957, played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s legal and judicial development. His family’s deep ties to Nigeria—along with contributions by other Lucians like architect Neville Skeete—symbolise enduring people-to-people bonds.

The Presidency emphasised that President Tinubu’s visit aligns with Nigeria’s foreign policy thrust centred on the “Four D’s– Democracy, Development, Diaspora and Demography.

On Democracy, the visit strengthens Nigeria’s relations with Saint Lucia, a fellow democratic state with a stable parliamentary system.

The statement added that during a live broadcast on the National Television Network (NTN), a Saint Lucian commentator described President Tinubu as “a fighter for democracy” for his pro-democracy activism during Nigeria’s military era.

On development, the President’s engagement with institutions like Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and the deployment of Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (TAC) personnel underlines a commitment to educational and technical cooperation.

Under Diaspora, the visit supports the African Union’s Sixth Region Initiative, which identifies the African diaspora as a critical development partner.

“Nigeria actively fosters cultural exchange through collaboration in education, culture, and heritage preservation,” the statement added.

The growing popularity of Afrobeats, Nollywood and Nigerian Literature in Saint Lucia—evident in local events like the Gros Islet Street Party—is a testament to Nigeria’s rising soft power in the Caribbean, the     Presidency noted.

On Demography, Tinubu’s message remains clear: Nigeria’s youthful population is a powerful driver of innovation, education, and industrialisation, and its global partnerships should reflect that strength.

As part of the visit, President Tinubu will meet with members of the Nigerian community in Saint Lucia at a reception to be hosted by Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre.

The event will provide an opportunity for the diaspora to interact directly with  President Tinubu and raise matters of mutual concern.

Saint Lucia, which gained independence in 1979, has hosted not less than 10 state visits in its history.

The last   African leader that visit the Island was President Nelson Mandela in July 1998.

President Tinubu’s state visit—27 years later—is therefore seen as a momentous diplomatic occasion.

As part of the high-level engagements, President Tinubu will deliver an address to a special joint session of the Saint Lucian Parliament at the Sandals Grande Saint Lucian Conference Hall—renamed after former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

At a time of global realignment and shifting partnerships, the Nigerian presidency sees this Caribbean engagement as timely and strategic.

“In an era of global uncertainty, deepening cooperation between the Global South, particularly between continental Africa and the Caribbean, has become imperative,” Onanuga said.

Ex-int’l football player, four others arrested over 22.6kg cocaine at MMIA

… 72-year-old grandma, Beninese, others nabbed in NDLEA raids in Delta, Kwara, Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has arrested an ex-international football player, Segun George Hunkarin, along with his businessman partner, Ntoruka Emmanuel Chinedu, over attempt to smuggle a consignment of cocaine into Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport,(MMIA) Ikeja, Lagos.

  • Fubara: Rivers peace terms heavy, bitter, but necessary

Fubara: Rivers peace terms heavy, bitter, but necessary

    • Begs supporters to accept new conditions for peace

    • Wike, gov, Amaewhule make public appearance after Abuja parley

Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara yesterday asked his supporters to accept the terms of his peace deal with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike in good faith.

There is no price too big to pay for peace, said Fubara apparently in reaction to criticism of the peace deal by some people who accused him of surrendering to alleged intimidation.

Fubara spoke at a meeting with members of his Simplified Family in Port Harcourt 24 hours after the Abuja peace deal.

He described the conditions as heavy and bitter but necessary.

He gave no details of the terms which media reports had said include a one term for him, payment of the withheld salary and allowances of the 27 pro-Wike legislators in the state House of Assembly and withdrawal of all court cases filed by the two sides.

The legislators are to discontinue plan to impeach him. Fubara gave a background to the peace deal, saying: “After the meeting we had before May 29th, we’ve had series of meetings and one of the meetings we had was the one we met with the President and President Tinubu clearly said ‘I want you and your oga (boss) to settle’.

“Nobody can take away the role my oga played, that’s the truth. Yes, we might have our differences, but nobody here will say he doesn’t know the role the man played. Nobody can wish away the risk he took.

“Yes, at a point we had our differences, and if today there’s need for us to settle, please anyone who genuinely believes in me should understand that it’s the right thing to do.

“So, my dear fathers, brothers and sisters, no matter the level of peace that a mediator will arrange, the true peace is the one both of you are sitting down together to say yes this is what we want.

“At this point, I’ve met him and we have spoken. You can’t take away him not being hurt. He’s a human being.

“I also have my own share of pains too, and if he feels that for the pains he has gone through these are things he wants, inasmuch as it is not my life, I will give it to him and let us have that peace.

“Even while all these things were going on, I still in my quiet time appreciated and recognised the role he played and every one of us here, we know it.”

He pledged that he would not abandon his Simplified Family, and appealed to them to understand that whatever terms were agreed upon were important for total reconciliation.

“Like I said, it’s heavy, its bitter, but we must accept the situation and move on with it,” he stressed.

Continuing, he said: “I can’t abandon you people; that’s one thing I need to say here.

“This is the time for me to prove to you that I care for you, and I make my commitment here that whichever way it goes, I will not abandon anybody.

“The sacrifice that we are going to make for us to achieve this total peace is going to be heavy, and I want everybody to prepare for it.

“Without a total reconciliation, which by the grace of God both of us have gotten, there’s no way we can make progress in this state, there’s no way the President can come in to save the situation.

“So, I want to appeal to everyone, I have accepted that we must accept this peace no matter how it looks. No matter how you feel, we must accept it.”

Fubara insisted that it was not all about him but principally about the development and progress of the state. He cited the numerous projects that were abandoned in the midst of the crisis.

He promised that all his supporters would be integrated into the bigger family, adding that it was time for his followers to stand with him.

He told them: “We have fought. I think in my own assessment and in the assessment of anyone here who is genuine in this struggle, you will know that we have done what we needed to do.

“At this point, if you want to be truthful to yourself, the only solution is peace.

“I did say that there’s no price that is too big for peace. I meant it and I’m still ready to follow it to the end.

“Some of you might be frowning, but if we believe that we are one family and our interest is to support the President, then what is the issue? You all will definitely be integrated into the big family.

“If you say you are with us and you believe in me, this is the time for us to see it. The time when there was nothing and you stood.

“It is not even about me as a person, it’s about the overall interest of the state.

“In the midst of this crisis between me and my oga, look at the projects we initiated, Many have been abandoned.

“We know the progress we would have recorded and areas that would have been developed. So there’s need for this peace. That’s the truth.

“In my place, there’s a fish they call ‘Atabala’. You call it Tilapia. The native tilapia doesn’t grow big. The mother tilapia tells the kids that if you want to grow up to my own size, hide your head inside the mud.

“Every one of us should understand that at this time, we’ve done our best and what we need now is this peace so that we can grow.

“I know it’s difficult and heavy but that’s the true situation.”

Fubara, Wike, Amaewhule make public appearance after Abuja peace deal

Earlier yesterday, Fubara, Wike and the suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule, appeared in public together.

The occasion was the funeral service for an uncle of the FCT minister in his hometown of  Rumueprikom, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Also present at the funeral service were Senator Allwell Onyesoh, Senator George Thompson Sekibo, Senator Olaka Nwogu, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche; former House of Representatives Member, Hon. Ken Chikere; South-South Vice Chairman of the ACP, Victor Giadom; and former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja, among others.

Fubara, in a post on his X account @SimFubaraKSC yesterday, said: “Today, I joined the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, His Excellency Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and other dignitaries at the funeral service of his beloved cousin, the late Elder Temple Omezurike Onuoha, in Rumueprikom.”

Wike, speaking on the peace deal in Abuja on Friday, said: “We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us.

“We are members of the same political family.”

He said both sides agreed to bury the hatchet and commit to working together going forward.

He acknowledged that while disagreements are a natural part of human relations, reconciliation is also part of the process, and that has now been accomplished.

“Yes, just like humans, you have a disagreement, and then you also have a time to settle your disagreement. That has been finally concluded today.

“We have come to report to Mr. President that this is what we have agreed. So, for me, everything is over,” the FCT Minister said.

He asked political actors in Rivers to align with the renewed spirit of unity and cooperation.

He said: “I enjoin everybody who believes to work with us to also work together with everybody.

“There’s no more acrimony. There’s nothing to say.”

The governor said: “For me, it’s a day we have to thank Almighty God.

“What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and by the special grace of God, this night, with the help of Mr President and the agreement of the leaders of the state, our leader, peace has returned in Rivers State.

The succession race for the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) got underway yesterday with former governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura, former governor of Plateau State,  Senator Joshua Dariye, former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, Senator Solomon Ewuga, and Senator Sani Musa, emerging as early contestants.

Also heavily tipped for the position last night was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief George Akume.

They are all from the North Central which had mounted a serious campaign for the office after the exit of Alhaji Abdulahi Adamu in 2023.

Party sources said yesterday that Senator Abu Ibrahim from Katsina in the North West could also join the race.

A few media outlets reported last night that Akume had been appointed to the position only for them to pull the story down.

The State House denied any such appointment.

Special Aviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said “there has been no change in the status of His Excellency, Senator George Akume, as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.”

He said President Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, “has not made any new appointments.”

He confirmed that “information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue.”

Onanuga blamed those he called agents of mischief for fabricating the ‘fake news’.“

The APC national chairman position became vacant on Friday following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Two groups from the North Central yesterday revved up agitation for the allocation of the position to the zone.

One of them, States Youth Leaders’ Forum of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) advocated zoning the position to the North Central and particularly Nasarawa State which produced Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu.

Also rooting for the zone is the North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum which said it was time for the NC to have the position back in the interest of fairness.

The Coordinating Chairman of the States Youth Leaders’ Forum of the defunct CPC, Prince Sani Ogu Salisu, said yesterday that “by giving the North Central Zone the opportunity to lead, the APC would be reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity and regional representation, which are critical for maintaining party harmony and achieving electoral victories.”

Ogu described Al-Makura as the ideal candidate for the position of National Chairman.

“Senator Al-Makura’s appointment would not only be a nod to the zoning principle but also a strategic move to ensure party cohesion and electoral success in 2027,” he said

On its part, the North-Central APC Forum said the position of APC National Chairman was originally zoned to the North-Central but was given to Ganduje from the North-West in violation of the party’s zoning formula.

The Forum’s Chairman, Saleh Zazzaga said the party now has an opportunity to correct what it described as a longstanding injustice against the North-Central zone.

The Forum said it suspended its opposition to Ganduje’s appointment in 2023 in the interest of party unity.

He said: “We have consistently maintained that the position of National Chairman should remain in the North-Central to complete the tenure of Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

“We even went to court to pursue this demand. However, when the National Executive Committee (NEC) ratified Ganduje’s appointment, we chose to suspend the agitation for the sake of the party’s stability.”

With Ganduje’s resignation, the Forum said the time has come to return the position of National Chairman to the North-Central, urging President Tinubu to direct the Acting National Chairman, Ali Bukar Dalori, to immediately convene a National Executive Committee meeting to elect a substantive replacement from the region.

“The resignation has presented a golden opportunity for the party to do the right thing, for fairness, justice and equity. The North-Central played a critical role in the 2023 elections and deserves to be recognised accordingly,” the Forum added.

He said the North-Central zone gave Tinubu 11,760,993 votes (41.3%), the third-highest number of votes nationally, behind only the South-West and North-West.

It also pointed out that the APC controls five of the six states in the region, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Niger, further affirming its political strength.

The Forum added that the zone boasts several qualified individuals capable of steering the party to success in the 2027 general election.

“This is not just a demand based on sentiment. The North-Central has capable hands that can lead the APC to greater electoral victories. Returning the chairmanship to the zone will consolidate the party’s progress and stability,” the group noted.

The Forum commended Ganduje for his contributions while in office, including attracting high-profile defections from other parties and helping the APC win states formerly held by opposition.

“Under Ganduje’s leadership, the APC welcomed defectors including governors, senators and House of Representatives members. His leadership also contributed to electoral victories in States like Edo.”

Akume has served in several capacities since the return to democracy in 1999, first as two term governor of Benue State and later as Senator and minister in the Buhari Administration.

Makura, a two term governor of Nasarawa State, was elected to the Senate after his tenure as governor.

Musa currently represents Niger East in the Senate and he is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance.

He is credited with playing a crucial role in the recent consideration of the Tax Reform bills by the National Assembly.

Alhaji Abu Ibrahim was deputy minority chief whip of the Senate between 2011 and 2015. He was also a critical stakeholder in the merger talks that gave birth to the APC.

Soon after Ganduje’s resignation on Friday, the party named the Deputy National Chairman (North) Alhaji Ali Bukar Dalori as replacement in an acting capacity pending the convening of a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to pick a substantive chair.

Ganduje formally handed over to Dalori yesterday in Abuja.

Although the APC said a substantive chairman would be elected soon, getting this done will take a minimum of 14 days.

Article 25.2 of the party’s constitution stipulates that the NEC “shall meet every quarter and or at any time decided by the National Working Committee or at the request made in writing by one-third of the members of the National Executive Committee, provided that not less than fourteen (14) days notice is given for the meeting.

However, the NWC may summon an emergency NEC meeting at any time “provided that at least three (3) days notice of the meeting shall be given to all persons entitled to attend.

APC governors: Ganduje’s resignation in tandem with party’s continued evolution

Uncertainty over PDP’s NEC meeting as internal crisis lingers

    • Saraki, Damagum, others intensify consultations to save party

    • BoT chair backs anti-Damagum NWC faction; Trustees Secretary, Makarfi support Anyanwu

    • Coalition agenda at root of our problem, says lawmaker

It is still unclear whether the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will proceed with its meeting scheduled for tomorrow in Abuja.

The party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Ilyas Damagum, chairman of the Reconciliation Committee, Dr.Bukola Saraki and several other stakeholders are understood to be working round the clock to shelve the meeting for now to save the party from further jeopardy.

Sources told The Nation yesterday that they had intensified consultations in the last few days to resolve  the party’s unending crisis.

Their efforts appeared to be yielding fruits as some of those opposed to the postponement of the meeting are said to be soft pedaling.

These include the party’s  National Vice Chairman (North West), Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo and the  National Treasurer, Hon. Ahmed Yayari, both of whom  withdrew from the 11-member anti-Damagum/Anyanwu group of PDP National Working Committee members who joined the party’s spokesman, Debo Ologunagba and Deputy National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo to condemn the reinstatement of the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

Anyanwu, who turned 60 yesterday, was joined by several party leaders at the International Conference Center, Abuja to celebrate the occasion.

Sources said they used the opportunity to discuss the state of affairs of the PDP.

A source blamed party members who are on their way to the coalition party, being put together ahead of 2027, for the stalemate in the PDP.

“The coalition agenda is at the heart of our problems because those who plan to leave, including a very top person in PDP BoT, also want to do everything to ensure that potential 2027 candidates end up contesting only on the platform of their new party,” the source said.

The source said  the Saraki committee set up by the PDP Governors’ Forum has been having private consultations with key stakeholders towards resolving some of the contentious issues and “ it is making good progress.”

Yayari pledged support for the  Damagum-led National Working Committee, which recognizes Anyanwu as National Secretary of the PDP.

Another group comprising those holding deputy official positions within the PDP NWC also endorsed  Damagum’s support of the Supreme Court verdict on the issue of National Secretary.

The group’s position is in contrast to that of the Deputy National Secretary,  Setonji Koshoedo, party spokesman, Debo Ologunagba and nine others who are opposed to the reinstatement of Anyanwu and the deferment of the NEC meeting.

Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, dismissed the insistence of the anti-Damagum group to proceed with the Monday NEC meeting as a joke.

“They are just joking”, he said in response to a text message from The Nation.

He wondered how a few NWC members could convene a NEC meeting without the party’s acting national chairman,  National Secretary,  Board of Trustees’ Secretary, Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum and others who have publicly supported Damagum’s statement on the issue.

Aside from Osadolor, other members of the group of PDP national deputies backing Damagum and supporting the call to cancel Monday’s NEC meeting are the party’ s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi; the Deputy National Legal Adviser,  Okechukwu Osuoha; the Deputy National Women Leader, Hajia Maryam; the Deputy National Financial Secretary,  D.U. Kamale, and; the Deputy National Treasurer, David Eneh Chubby.

Ologunagba and others said on Wednesday that tomorrow’s  meeting must take place with or without Damagum, Anyanwu, Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, Board of Trustees’ Secretary, Senator Ahmed Makarfi  and other party leaders who joined Damagum to announce the reinstatement of Anyanwu and cancellation of the NEC meeting.

They said:“The pronouncements by the Acting National Chairman have no foundation as no organ of the Party (including the NWC), individual or group has the power to cancel, overrule, veto or vary the resolution of the National Executive Committee (NEC) under the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).

“For the avoidance of doubt, the NEC is the highest decision-making organ of the party, second only to the National Convention; by virtue of Section 31 (3) of the PDP Constitution, the resolution of the NEC to hold its 100th meeting on Monday 30th June, 2025 is binding on all organs, officers, chapters and members of the party and no organ, group or individual can vary or veto this resolution of NEC.

“In the light of the foregoing, the 100th NEC meeting as scheduled for Monday, 30th June, 2025 has not been cancelled or postponed.”

The PDP Board of Trustees  is also split on whether the NEC should go ahead with the meeting tomorrow or not.

Secretary of the board , Senator Ahmed Makarfi, was one of top party leaders who joined Damagum  at his   press conference where he announced  the postponement of the NEC meeting, while the Chairman of the BoT, Senator Adolphus Wabara insisted that the meeting must take place by all means.

He declared the  pronouncements of  the Acting National Chairman  null, void and of no effect, being inconsistent and in gross violation of the express provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).

He said:“for the avoidance of doubt, the National Executive Committee (NEC) is the highest decision-making Organ of the Party, second only to the National Convention; by virtue of Section 31 (3) of the PDP Constitution, the resolution of the NEC at its 99th NEC meeting held on Tuesday, 27th May, 2025 to hold its 100th meeting on Monday, 30th June, 2025 is binding on all Organs and members of the PDP.

“To this effect, being a NEC decision, no organ, group or individual has the power or competence to cancel, adjust or postpone the 100th NEC meeting already scheduled by NEC to hold on Monday, 30th June, 2025; it is therefore not within the remit or authority of the Acting National Chairman, to override a collective decision of the NEC. Such conduct amounts to an affront to the constitutional authority of NEC and the collective will of our Party.”

On the status of Anyanwu,Wabara said: “ the statement purporting to reinstate Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary is equally spurious and offensive to the spirit and letter of the PDP Constitution, the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment and the resolution of NEC.

“The decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) at its 600th meeting directing the Deputy National Secretary to act as National Secretary in accordance with the extant powers of the NWC remains valid, having not been set aside by the NWC or NEC; the attempt by Amb. Damagum to overturn that decision is a gross abuse of office.

“The Board of Trustees, being the conscience of the Party cannot stand idly by and watch the Party descend into chaos through acts of impunity, unilateralism and disregard for constitutional procedures. As such, the BoT hereby affirms the following:

    The 100th NEC Meeting shall proceed as scheduled on Monday, 30th June, 2025. All members of NEC are duly advised to disregard any contradictory notice or statement regarding the 100th NEC meeting;

    The Deputy National Secretary, Arch. Setonji Koshoedo remains the Acting National Secretary of the PDP pending any contrary decision formally taken and communicated by the appropriate Organ of the Party;

All party members are advised to be guided by the supremacy of the Constitution of the PDP, and resist any attempt to drag the party into avoidable crisis.

“The BoT reiterates that no individual interest is greater than the institutional integrity of the PDP; the BoT, as the moral compass of the party, will continue to defend due process, uphold Party supremacy and protect the democratic ethos upon which the PDP is founded,” Wabara added.

    Constitution

Slated for discussion at the NEC meeting is the nomination of Hon Sunday Udeh-Okoye to replace Anyanwu as National Secretary by the South East Zone of the party.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) requires the parties to serve it a 21-day notice of its NEC meetings.
