Brazilian-backed $1b initiative to overhaul agriculture sector

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with Brazil.

He spotlighted the $1 billion Green Imperative Programme as a transformative initiative to overhaul Nigeria’s agricultural sector through technology-driven solutions and strategic capacity building.

The President spoke after receiving the Vice President of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin, at the Villa in Abuja yesterday.

President Tinubu described the programme as a flagship of the growing partnership between the two nations.

“The landmark $1 billion Green Imperative Programme, a bilateral agricultural mechanisation initiative anchored by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in collaboration with Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and private sector stakeholders, stands as a flagship of this renewed partnership,” the President stated on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, @officialABAT.

According to him, the initiative is “designed to transform Nigeria’s agricultural value chain through technology transfer, capacity building, and the establishment of service centres across the country”.

President Tinubu, who was joined by Vice President Kashim Shettima, said the visit by the Brazilian delegation signified a shift in relations from mere expressions of goodwill to concrete steps towards shared economic and developmental goals.

“Our engagement reaffirmed the enduring ties between Nigeria and Brazil, two diverse democracies linked by shared values, historical connections, and a common ambition for inclusive, people-driven growth,” President Tinubu said.

He outlined several strategic sectors where both nations are aligning efforts, including agribusiness and food security, trade and industrialisation, energy transition, healthcare delivery, innovation, defence cooperation, and cultural exchange.

Looking ahead, President Tinubu noted that Nigeria is preparing for active participation in the upcoming COP30 Climate Conference in Belém, Brazil — another avenue for intensifying collaboration on climate action and sustainability.

“We also look forward to Nigeria’s active participation at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, as both nations work to scale up collaboration on climate action, energy transition, and environmental resilience,” he said.

From renewable energy projects to creative industry partnerships, Tinubu described the renewed relationship as one anchored in shared prosperity and results-driven diplomacy.

“Nigeria remains firmly committed to building resilient South–South partnerships anchored in mutual respect, shared prosperity, and tangible results for our citizens,” the President affirmed.

He concluded with a message of solidarity in Portuguese, echoing Brazil’s maxim for unity: “As our Brazilian friends say, ‘Juntos somos mais fortes’—together we are stronger.”

BREAKING: PDP leaders, INEC in closed-door meeting

A delegation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by acting national chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, on Tuesday stormed the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to resolve the lingering dispute over the rightful holder of the party’s national secretary position.

The delegation included prominent party stakeholders such as former Senate President Bukola Saraki; Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau); former Governors Ahmed Makarfi (Kaduna) and Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa); and Senator Ben Obi, among others.

Addressing INEC officials during the meeting, Damagum said the visit was prompted by a letter from the commission, which raised concerns about an inconsistency in the party’s communication regarding the 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

He explained that following a recent Supreme Court judgment, it became imperative to clarify who the legally recognised national secretary of the party is.

Responding, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu noted that the commission convened the meeting at the request of the PDP and emphasised the commission’s interest in ensuring clarity on party leadership positions, particularly given the anomaly in the latest NEC invitation.

“For 99 previous NEC meetings, the commission received letters signed by both the National Chairman and the National Secretary,” Yakubu stated. “However, this time, the letter bore only the chairman’s signature, prompting the need for clarification.”

“Sometimes ago, the commission received a letter from the party stating that one Ude Okoye is the national secretary. After that, we received another letter that said it was Senator Anyanwu. The party changed its mind and said it was one Shokoye. Again, the party changed its kind and said it is Senator Anyanwu

“We are the regulators of political parties, and when we go into the working session, I hope we will fully understand where you are coming from and what you expect from us as the registrar and regulators of political parties.”

  • Tinubu pledges balanced infrastructure development

    Tinubu pledges balanced infrastructure development

    • 150km rural roads built in FCT, says Wike

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has again reassured Nigerians of his administration’s resolve to prioritise infrastructure development in all parts of the country.

He said that projects will be executed in a balanced and inclusive manner to uplift communities, especially in the hinterlands.

Speaking on Monday at the inauguration of the newly completed 15-kilometre A2 – Pai Town Road in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to equitable development and national integration.

His host FCT Minister Nyesom Wike attributed the over 150 kilometers of rural roads built by the FCT Administration across the six area councils to the support given by the President

“This administration will continue to prioritize infrastructure in all zones. We will ensure that development is not lopsided, but balanced, inclusive, and targeted at lifting lives”, the President declared.

The road, which connects the Abuja – Lokoja Expressway to Pai Town, is part of the 150 kilometres of roads completed across the six FCT councils since President Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.

The President noted that infrastructure only holds value when it directly benefits citizens, improves livelihoods, and creates opportunities.

He said: “The road, the infrastructure development, means nothing if you don’t develop it to the benefit of our people. Indeed, this progress will continue to elevate our lives.”

Highlighting the strategic importance of the project, Tinubu said the road creates a vital corridor for economic and social advancement.

“The commissioning of this newly constructed road… is both symbolic and strategic. It opens a new corridor for agriculture, commerce, education, and mobility—all necessary to strengthen our national economy from the grassroots up”, he said.

The president also acknowledged the longstanding neglect of many rural communities and said his government is determined to reverse that trend, saying “rural communities such as Pai make important contributions to Nigeria’s social and economic fabric, especially in food production and local enterprises, but their potential has been hindered by poor road access, isolation and neglect for far too long. Today, that narrative is changing.”

Commending the FCT minister for prioritising rural development, Tinubu urged residents to take ownership of the infrastructure and protect it as a tool for community advancement.

“You are doing commendable work in the underserved rural areas. Let this road serve as a pathway to growth and a bridge to a better life for farmers, traders, students, and youth”, he told the Minister.

On the age-old challenge of tension between farmers and livestock herders, calling instead for collaboration and economic symbiosis.

“On my way, I observed the need for our great farmers and livestock owners to establish the opportunity for grazing and do what is necessary,” he said.

He assured the Pai community that the Federal Government would support efforts to turn potential sources of conflict into platforms for prosperity, assuring “we will help you, we will work with you. We will convert what used to be a liability and a source of conflict into a means of prosperity.”

The road project, he noted, complements such efforts by improving access to markets and facilitating economic activity in previously hard-to-reach rural settlements.

The FCT minister said some of the 150 roads so far constructed by the FCTA had already been inaugurated.

Wike reiterated the administration’s resolve to continue investing in infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Agenda, with the aim of transforming the FCT into a globally competitive capital city.

He lauded Tinubu for coming to PAI, adding: “Today, of all the roads inaugurated, this, for me, I consider very, very important. I recall that when I came to see you, I said, Mr. President, it would be very, very fine if you can make out time to visit one, at least, of the rural roads and see the people how joyous they will be.

Wike said: “I’m sure if you look directly opposite you, you will see that the people are very, very, very happy. This also tells us that your emphasis is not just to improve infrastructure in the city, it is also to improve life and other infrastructure in the satellite town. I will state here for record purposes so that we will understand what you’ve done since you came on May 29, 2023. What you’ve done in the rural areas.

“The number of roads you have constructed and the number of roads you are still constructing. I don’t want to talk about the issue of security and education. But let me tell you the history of this road. Through the Federal Council, we are awarded the contract for Pai, the boundary between Pai and Gomani.

“So, when we were coming for the fly-off, I was asking, where are we going to fly off this road? We are past 10-12 kilometers. So, when I got to the boundary between Pai and Gomani, from that to Gomani is 13 kilometers that is ongoing, before December, they will also be completed.

So, I now ask, how do we get to that Pai, when this road is not constructed? It doesn’t make sense. All we would have done are okay, let us do this, later we can go from Pai to Gomani. I thank God, today we are commissioning it.

“The contractor assured us that he will do everything. I said, can you include it in the celebration of Mr. President’s second year in office? And he said, yes, that he will use this to show his capacity and capability. I also want to thank them. Now, from Gomani to Yangoji is another 13 kilometers, which we have told the managing director of this company to make sure he starts work from Gomani to Yangoji. At the end of the day, At only this stretch you would have done about 45 kilometers of the roads in this area.

“I want to inform you that all those roads have all been commissioned. All those six roads have all been commissioned.”

“Today, I will read out what you have done so that everybody can hear, so that those who are doubting Thomas can go and check. These roads they are talking about, is it in existence or just mere propaganda?

“In 2024, you approved the construction of six emergency roads, and I will name them. One is the construction of Paikon Kore-Ibwa Road in Gwagwalada, nine kilometers. That road has been commissioned.

“Today, we are in A2 to pai. Let me say, for this year’s commissioning, Your Excellency, we will be commissioning 10 kilometers of Aguma Palace-Radio-New Market Road in Gwagwalada. And then, Nyanya-Karshi dual Carriageway, 18 kilometers. We are doing the commission of 7.4 kilometers of Old Ushafa Road and rehabilitation of Lower Usuma Dam.

“We are very happy. So, we have done, if you calculate all, and the ongoing roads, and the ones completed, within the satellite towns, you’ve done not less than 150 kilometers of roads.

“You have been able to open most of the roads. If you came here before, you would have wondered, assuming there is crime, how will police enter here? How will security men enter here? It will not be possible.”

Africa’s largest rare earth minerals project berths in Nigeria

    • 100 jobs to be created

A $400 million Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to build Africa’s largest rare earth and critical minerals plant will enjoy full support, the Federal Government has said.

The plant to be built in Nasarawa State will provide not less than 10,000 jobs, it was learnt.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, lauded  the project funders Hasetins Commodities Limited for keying into the value addition campaign of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and confirming that mineral processing is the strategy to take the jobless from the streets.

Hasetins hopes to add 12,000 metric tonnes to its current 6,000 metric tonnes installed capacity as preparations for the forthcoming groundbreaking of the additional facility gathers momentum.

Noting that it represents a significant milestone in efforts to spur investor confidence in the mining sector, Alake said the establishment of the plant would promote skills transfer and boost the contributions of the solid minerals sector to the economy.

Speaking while receiving the Managing Director/CEO of Hasetins Commodities Ltd, Prince Jidayi  and his team, Dr. Alake applauded the company for its strategic foresight and patriotic investment in a $400 million rare earth metals plant, commending  Hasetins for aligning its operations with the federal government’s drive for in-country processing and beneficiation of minerals.

“I’m glad our ongoing engagements have culminated in this groundbreaking initiative. With your collaboration, we are now witnessing the establishment of the largest rare earth and critical metals plant in Africa, right here in Nigeria. On behalf of the President, the Ministry, and the Nigerian people, I commend your commitment to this vital sector. Your patriotic zeal confirms that our policies are on the right track and producing tangible results,” Dr. Alake added.

Prince Jidayi expressed deep appreciation for the Minister’s leadership and reforms, which he said had significantly improved investor confidence and streamlined access to the mining sector.

“We have observed the introduction of mining marshals to combat illegal mining and reforms that have simplified the licensing process. These efforts have directly influenced our decision to invest heavily in this project. Beyond this flagship plant, we are also establishing regional separation plants and empowering local communities and  miners,” he said.

Prince Jidayi noted that the company’s model ensures early-stage beneficiation by pre-separating metals locally, generating immediate income for artisanal miners. The initiative also includes training, provision of protective equipment, and broader community engagement.

Hasetins’ Director of Corporate Affairs, Peter Butt, commended Dr. Alake for bringing renewed purpose and structure to the mining sector. He emphasised that the Minister’s strong emphasis on local value addition reinforced the company’s decision to invest in sustainable, community-driven development.

Hasetins Commodities Ltd specialises in producing critical metals essential for high-tech applications and defence systems, including rare earth metals and Platinum Group Metals (PGMs).

The Minister reaffirmed the federal government’s full institutional support for the project, underscoring its alignment with the Ministry’s vision of transforming Nigeria’s solid minerals into a cornerstone of industrial growth and economic diversification.

Fed Govt kicks off agric renewal with 2000 tractors

    • Scheme designed to attract youths into farming

In a new approach to massive production of food and cash crops, the Federal Government yesterday made available 2,000 tractors, 2,000 disc ploughs and harrows, and 1,000 disc ridgers to farmers.

The equipment imported from the Republic of Belarus in Eastern Europe was distributed yesterday after the inauguration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja.

According to him, the distribution of the agricultural tools would mark a shift from subsistence farming to technology-driven and large-scale agriculture.

Others are 1,200 tractor-trailers, 500 seed drills, 300 boom sprayers, 10 harvesters, 12 mobile workshop vehicles, and 9,022 sets of spare parts.

President Tinubu said: “We made a promise and today (yesterday) we are delivering on that promise.

“Our goal is not only to feed ourselves but to become a global player in agriculture.

“Let this day go down in history as the beginning of Nigeria’s agricultural renewal.”

He explained that the launch is part of his government’s initiative aimed at wooing the youth into mechanised farming, ensuring food security and positioning the country as a global competitor.

“We are making farming more sexy to youths. Agriculture is not just about hoes and cutlasses anymore.

“It is about innovation, entrepreneurship, and nation-building. Our youths must be at the centre of this transformation,” he said.

The President stressed his determination to present agriculture as a viable and profitable career path for the younger generation.

The new agricultural programme, initiated through a bilateral agreement with the Republic of Belarus, will see 550,000 hectares of farmland being put into production, the generation of more than two million metric tons of food yearly and the creation of over 16,000 jobs.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to food self-sufficiency and global competitiveness, President Tinubu emphasised that increased agricultural productivity was vital to national stability and economic resilience.

To support the rollout, a national training programme would be launched for farmers, operators and technicians, with emphasis on proper equipment use, servicing and maintenance.

Additional features of the programme are GPS-enabled tracking systems, a structured repayment and repossession model, and funding partnerships with development finance institutions and non-interest banks.

President Tinubu urged all stakeholders, state governments, service providers and cooperatives to ensure efficient and transparent deployment of the equipment.

“To all stakeholders receiving this equipment, deploy it with maximum efficiency.

“We will work with you; we will supervise you at various locations, and we will hold you accountable,’’ said the President.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Abubakar Kyari described the presentation of equipment as the fulfilment of the President’s July 13, 2023, emergency declaration on food security.

“We are shifting from hand hoe to horsepower; from manual effort to mechanised efficiency,” Kyari said.

He acknowledged the key role of AFRA-DMCC, the Belarusian supplier and hailed Belarus’s commitment to technology transfer, local training and long-term support.

The minister expressed hope that the initiative would reduce Nigeria’s dependence on food imports, enhance nutrition and empower a new generation of youth-led ‘agri-preneurs’ to drive innovation and growth in the agriculture sector.

The Republic of Belarus was represented at the event by Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Karankevich and Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov.

Stakeholders like All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), National Association of Young Farmers and former Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Yakub Olajide Bashorun, hailed the launch.

They described the move as a significant step with the potential for substantial impact across the agricultural sector.

‘’It is a welcome development. It is the thing we have been expecting.

“I believe it is going to improve total output and increase farmers’ performance.

“There is no doubt about that,” said Femi Oke, chairman of AFAN (Southwest).

    Stakeholders laud Tinubu

National Association of Young Farmers, Ekiti State branch Chairman, Ade Ajayi, welcomed the development but called for a holistic approach to ensure it yielded the expected results.

Ajayi, who also heads Corporate Farmers International, proposed innovative strategies for deployment and impact measurement.

He urged the Federal Government and farmers to collaborate in identifying comparative advantages to maximise the impact on Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product(GDP).

“The Federal Government and farmers should look at the comparative advantages of commodities to be produced,” Ajayi advised.

Bashorun, who lauded the President’s commitment to farmers, advised the government to establish farm mechanisation hubs across the country.

The hubs, according to him, should strategically be located near farm clusters to ensure proper maintenance of the tractors and other implements.

“Our tractor-to-hectare ratio is very low in Nigeria, and that’s a big reason behind our low productivity.

“With this, we expect that farmers will be smart and explore the machines to boost food production,” Bashorun said.

  • Presidency reaffirms Tinubu’s pro-June 12 credentials

    Presidency reaffirms Tinubu’s pro-June 12 credentials

    • Lamido’s claim far from truth

The Presidency yesterday flayed former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido over his remarks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s role in the pro-democracy struggle.

It said that his claims that the President only joined the struggle after the formation of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) was false, revisionist, and historically dishonest.

The presidency reaffirmed the President’s pro-June 12 credentials, noting that he never at any stage deserted the battle he joined at the outset when he was a senator.

According to the Presidency,  Lamido, then national secretary, and the national chairman of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), the late Chief Tony Anenih, and not President Tinubu, traded off the mandate of the late Chief Moshood Abiola.

Abiola won the June 12, 1993 poll, which was, adjudged to be free and fair by domestic monitors and foreign observers.

The historic poll was annulled by military President Ibrahim Babangida, who stepped aside in August 1993, after installing the Interim National Government (ING) headed by the late Chief Ernest Shonekan.

Three months after, in November, 1993, the Defence Minister, Gen. Sani Abacha sacked the ING, dissolved all democratic structures and installed himself as military head of state.

Lamido, who spoke on television, said that President Tinubu did not initially joined the June 12 battle and his mother, the late Alhaja Abibat Mogaji, President-General of Market Traders’ Association of Nigeria, supported the callous annulment.

During the dark period, the eminent market leader, not only decried the annulment, but also displayed courage by going to Aso Villa, Abuja to plead with Babangida to rescind his decision and de-annul the election.

Rejecting Lamido’s claims, the Presidency said in a, statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, that Lamido’s assertion was a “distortion of history.”

It said: “Alhaji Lamido’s claims represent a distortion of history and a regrettable attempt at revisionism. He alleged that President Tinubu only rose to prominence after the formation of NADECO and claimed that Tinubu’s mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, mobilised market women to back the annulment. These allegations are patently false.

The Presidency clarified that Alhaja Mogaji never rallied support for the annulment of the election, adding that if she“had she done so, she would have lost her position as market leader in Lagos”.

Revisiting Lamido’s role during the crisis, it  accused him of failing to defend the party’s mandate.

The Presidency said: “Alhaji Lamido, as secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP)—the party whose candidate, MKO Abiola, won the June 12 election—was among those who failed to oppose the military’s injustice.

“Lamido and the then-chairman Tony Anenih surrendered the people’s mandate without resistance.”

Shedding light on President Tinubu’s involvement and commitment, the Presidency maintained a consistent opposition to the military regime before the complete collapse of democratic institutions under General Abacha.

It also recalled that President Tinubu, who represented Lagos West District in the Third Republic, spoke on the Senate floor on August 19, 1993, categorically condemning the annulment.

Quoting from the Senate record, the Presidency noted that President Tinubu had described the annulment as “another coup d’état, ” warning against the injustice and abuse of power.

President Tinubu had stressed: “We have a government that made the law and abused its law. Therefore, the present military administration, by virtue of abrogation and violation of its own decree, has committed a crime. “

The Presidency also recalled Tinubu’s alignment with Abiola after his return from abroad where had gone to drum support for his mandate and his subsequent defiance of the Abacha regime, following its dissolution of the interim government.

It recalled that President Tinubu, along with Senators Ameh Ebute and Abu Ibrahim, was arrested and detained at Alagbon Police Station in,l Lagos, when they attempted to reconvene the Senate in defiance of the junta.

According to the Presidency, during the period, PresidentTinubu funded mass protests against the annulment, including the shutdown of the Third Mainland Bridge.

It also said that after Abiola’s arrest on June 22, 1994, the president joined other pro-democracy activists in fleeing the country and lived in exile for nearly five years.

The presidency said when on exile, he continued to finance resistance activities, adding that “ agents of the junta bombed his home in Balarabe Musa Crescent, Victoria Island.”

It also highlighted the president’s  contributions to NADECO and support for NALICON, an international campaign, led by Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka.

The Presidency emphasized that President Tinubu’s role in sustaining NADECO and backing for the pro-democracy movement were pivotal to resisting military rule and restoring democracy.

It added: “It is well-known that Tinubu played a leading role in the agitation against the June 12 annulment.

“Many NADECO leaders and journalists in exile and at home openly admitted that Tinubu sustained them and provided them with funds for the struggle. “

Berating Lamido for a shortfall in historical perception, the Presidency said “with his narrative, he appeared confused about the role of NADECO as an offshoot of the June 12 crisis which provided a platform to channel the struggle.

It also dismissed Lamido’s remarks as part of a broader political agenda being advanced by what it described as the “Coalition of the Disgruntled.”

The Presidency stressed: “We do not want to believe that Alhaji Lamido suffers from what psychologists call tall poppy syndrome. However, the conclusion is inevitable as it appears that Lamido is envious of Tinubu’s democratic credentials.

“Revisionism does not serve the cause of truth or our nation’s interests,” it added, calling on Lamido to fact-check his claims and avoid misleading the public.”
