    • Governor yet to hold defection to APC rally

There was calm but increased security in Kano State yesterday following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

There was, however, no official speech by the governor, his aides and the state government on the development.

A formal ceremony to herald his defection, which was initially scheduled for yesterday, also did not take place.

Yusuf was not in the Government House, where The Nation sighted some political aides removing   NNPP’s flag at the main entrance. They hung the Nigerian Green –White- Green national flag in the place of   NNPP’s.

The NNPP flag at the Deputy Governor’s Office was also removed.

Some of the political aides were seen walking around the Government House premises with caps emblazoned with  President Bola Ahmed  Tinubu’s famous freedom cap.

Tinubu’s freedom cap was first seen on the premises last Sunday at a function attended by Governor Yusuf and his exco members.

Many junior workers who were also spotted discussing in groups did not wear the   Kwankwasiyya cap, which hitherto was a part of their dressing.

There was a heavy presence of armed security personnel and Armoured Personnel Carriers(APCs)   in parts of Kano, especially around the  Government House.

An exco member, who did not want his name in print, told The Nation that the governor skipped the ceremony to prevent violence.

“We are no longer in NNPP. The most important thing about the defection to APC has been done, and others are still ongoing,” he said.

The Nation gathered that Yusuf would soon fly abroad with his loyal stakeholders to brief President Tinubu on his defection.

Another government official revealed that the governor defected with all the state’s council chairmen and all NNPP House of Assembly members.

Yusuf won the 2023 election on the platform of the NNPP, but has, for months, had open disagreement with Musa  Kwankwanso, widely regarded as the leader of the party(NNPP).

It was also gathered that the governor’s decision to defect stems from the unresolved leadership crises and multiple court cases within the NNPP.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of the state,  has vehemently disapproved the move by the governor. He insists   Yusuf should relinquish his position if he must defect.

  • Alaafin, Olubadan supremacy rift deepens

    Alaafin, Olubadan supremacy rift deepens

The rift between two foremost monarchs in Oyo State, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, may have deepened.

Indication of the rift emerged yesterday when the Olubadan ignored the Alaafin, as the latter made an attempt to greet and welcome the former to the 2026 Inter-faith service held for civil servants at the state secretariat.

The Olubadan had arrived shortly after the governor got to the venue and went ahead to exchange pleasantries with the governor, after which he went to other monarchs at the event, who all stood up to welcome and acknowledge him.

However, tension rose when the Olubadan ignored the outstretched hand of the Alaafin, but proceeded with others, before going to calmly take his seat, leaving the Alaafin visibly stranded.

The dramatic snub caused murmurs among the audience and has since ignited widespread outrage across the state and beyond.

While the event lasted, tension could be felt in the air, particularly around where the monarchs were seated.

Opinions were divided about the incident.

While some observers see it as disrespectful for the Alaafin to be seated and extending his hand to greet an ‘elderly’ Olubadan, others are of the views that the stool of Alaafin is more supreme to that of the Olubadan and that the current Olubadan must respect the stool, irrespective of the age of the current occupant.

Sources claimed the rift bordered on supremacy tussle between the two monarchs.

The public display of the acrimony was first noticed on December 15, 2025 during the unveiling of the Oyo@50 logo, an event organised by the state government at the same venue.

On that day, the Alaafin was represented by one of his chiefs. However, upon arrival of the Olubadan to the event, a little argument ensued, as he was ushered to sit on his reserved seat, beside the Alaafin.

The Olubadan displayed open annoyance at what he called disregard, noting that he would not sit beside the representative of the Alaafin on a seat which was placed before his, despite not being physically present.

The matter, which generated a lot of tension, saw many top government functionaries and politicians pushing to pacify the Olubadan.

By the time the dust would settle, the Olubadan’s chair was not only changed as requested, he was also relocated to a place before the seat of the Alaafin.

The situation has made observers question the propriety of the initial effort of the governor at facilitating peace and harmony between the monarchs.

The Nation reports that Governor Seyi Makinde on December 22, 2025 had a brief closed door meeting with the Alaafin and the Olubadan.

The meeting was held shortly after the governor signed the 2026 Appropriation Bill at an event at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

The meeting, which was observed to be unscheduled, was held at the Coffee Room, opposite photo gallery stage of the Exco Chamber.

Details of the meeting remained unclear at press time.

It was observed that shortly after the signing of the 2026 Appropriation Bill, the governor and the dignitaries who attended the event were on the way to take group photographs at the photo gallery stand when the governor invited both the Alaafin and Olubadan into the coffee room.

The budget signing event was attended by traditional rulers, political office holders, lawmakers, the judiciary among other relevant stakeholders

The meeting lasted barely 15 minutes, as other dignitaries waited patiently at the photo gallery awaiting the arrival of the governor and the monarchs.

However, observers believed the meeting could be based on the need for unity and togetherness between the two first-class monarchs.

Prior to the meeting, the social media has been awash with reports of acrimony and class tussle between the two foremost monarchs over perceived superiority tag.

The incident has triggered intense public debate, with critics questioning the Alaafin’s judgment and propriety, given the longstanding hierarchy, custom and sensitivities surrounding Yoruba traditional ‘rulership’.

Observers said yesterday’s episode has reopened old wounds and revived concerns over an alleged rift among traditional rulers in Oyo State, raising fears about the unity and stability of the revered institution.

  • ‘Why Yusuf, Kwankwaso parted ways’

    ‘Why Yusuf, Kwankwaso parted ways’

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader, Senator Rabiu Kwakwanso, parted ways because of rift over 2027 governorship poll.

A source said that the governor defected from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to realise his re-election bid.

According to the source, a major crisis has earlier broken out between the governor and the party leader because he was not prepared to back him for a second term.

He also explained that although Yusuf is Kwakwanso’s father-in-law, the governor has always alleged high-handedness.

The source said Yusuf decided to leave for the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he will automatically become the Kano APC leader and has a bright chance of flying the party’s ticket in 2027.

The source added: “The governor of Kano made up his mind to leave NNPP because his career would be sealed there in 2027. The deputy governor has been asked to prepare.

“The supporter of Yusuf believe that he has performed well to earn a second term ticket, which was being blocked. Kwakwanso and his successor, Abdullahi Ganduje, spent eight years. The governor has the support of the House of Assembly.”

He added: “Governor Yusuf is also joining the party in power to combine strength with the federal might to retain Kano. It is a major blow to the NNPP and its leader.”

    • Tinubu, Al Nahyan to sign multi-billion dollar pact

Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are set to sign a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

It will be during a scheduled bilateral meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the President of the UAE, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The agreement, to be sealed on the sidelines of the ongoing Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the UAE capital, will formalise ongoing economic engagements, boost investor confidence, and offer mutual protection for businesses operating in both countries.

UAE ranks among Nigeria’s top five trading partners.

The agreement is expected to unlock major investments in key sectors, with a pipeline projection of more than $10 billion.

In 2024, non-oil commodities trading between Nigeria and the UAE reached $4.3 billion.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, briefing journalists yesterday in Abu Dhabi, said the CEPA was a critical deliverable of President Tinubu’s participation in the sustainability summit.

READ ALSO; Between Wike and Fubara

He noted that several UAE investors had been eager for the agreement to be concluded to guarantee the safety and predictability of their investments in Nigeria.

He said: “President Tinubu is going to have a bilateral meeting with President Nahyan.

“One of the things to be discussed there is the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which is expected to be signed during that bilateral meeting.”

He explained that beyond attracting UAE investments into Nigeria, the agreement would also safeguard Nigerian interests abroad, particularly in Dubai, where many Nigerians run businesses and factories.

“It also protects the investments of Nigerians. We have a lot of Nigerian businesses in Dubai. Some actually even have factories. “This further protects them, dignifies the Nigerian and ensures that Nigerians are respected wherever they go to invest or visit,” Tuggar said.

On priority sectors for Nigeria–UAE collaboration, Tuggar identified gas development for electricity generation as a major focus, stressing that inadequate investment in converting Nigeria’s vast gas resources into power has contributed to persistent electricity outages.

He said: “We’re looking to invest further in gas for electricity. We have a lot of gas, and we need to develop it to generate electricity.

“That is why we now have a lot of pipelines being constructed and a licensing round going on for acreage.”

He added that the agreements would also open more opportunities for exploration and production.

Tuggar also pointed to expanded trade relations, including agricultural commodities and manufacturing, as well as improved financial and aviation frameworks.

He recalled that challenges faced by airline operators over trapped funds were resolved after President Tinubu assumed office, easing travel and financial transactions for Nigerians abroad.

He described Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week as a strategic platform that sits between global climate conferences, such as the recent COP, and helps participating countries move from declarations to implementation.

He noted that Nigeria’s participation was driven by the need to translate climate commitments into tangible outcomes, including funded and implementable projects, especially in areas where the country faces a deficit in project preparation.

Tuggar said: “This presents an opportunity to come with identified projects and try to source funding from some of the countries and organisations that are in attendance.”

Tuggar said President Tinubu’s address at the forum would outline Nigeria’s climate change priorities, nationally determined contributions, and the drive to make climate-related projects bankable to attract global funding.

“He will talk about Nigeria’s focus in terms of deliverables, our goals and commitments, and ensuring that the projects we bring forward are viable and can convince funders,” Tuggar said.

He added that Nigeria’s engagement at the forum underscores its commitment to sustainability, not only in tackling climate change but in doing so in a way that supports long-term economic growth and development.

Nigeria secured 14 investment deals worth $5 billion with the UAE last year.

Also, the two countries reached an agreement to collaborate on digital education and skills development as part of efforts to deepen participation in the global digital economy.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development for Nigeria, while UAE Digital School, under the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), signed for the UAE.

The agreement sought to expand access to digital education and practical skill development for Nigerian youth through the Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA).

Lawmakers, PANDEF initiate Fubara, Assembly reconciliation

Reconciliatory moves to starve off the impeachment proceedings initiated against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, began yesterday.

A seven-member peace committee was set up by the Pan-Niger Delta Elder’ Forum to resolve the crisis between the governor and the House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule.

Also yesterday, two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly called on their colleagues to back down on the initiated impeachment.

PANDEF National Chairman Dr Godknows Igali,  who set up the panel headed by former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), said it has two weeks to submit its report.

Other members of the committee are  Senator Obende Domingo, who represented Edo North District in the Senate, (Vice Chairman); former Housing Minister Chief Essien Nduese, retired Federal Permanent Secretary Dr. Timiebi Koripamo-Agari, former Director of Department of State Service Chief Mike Ejiofor,  former Cross River State Attorney-General Mrs. Nella Rabana-Andem (SAN),  and Prince Godwin Okotie, who will serve as secretary.

The political crisis got to a head last week after leading to the the lawmakers serving impeachment notice on the governor and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct.

Both were given seven days to respond to the allegations.

Fubara’s supporters, who decried the proceedings, attributed them to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove him from office.

But the Northcentral All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum said the call for the minister’s sack or resignation was wrong, adding that it could derail the development of  the FCT.

A source said President Tinubu had intervened in the Rivers logjam after Fubara met with him outside the country.

This claim could not be independently confirm last night.

According to the source, the President told the governor to implement the agreement he reached with the lawmakers.

It was gathered that Fubara, who had continued to call for calm, left Rivers on Sunday for Abuja to make consultations with All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.

The source said the governor, who is now Rivers APC leader,  left the state immediately after attending the Interdenominational church service  commemorating the Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

At the church, Fubara vowed to do everything possible to bring back peace to the state.

But an official of the House of Assembly said the lawmakers’ minds were made up on Fubara’s impeachment, adding that the lawmakers can only rescind their decision if the agreements are implemented by the governor.

He said: “I am sure that President Tinubu’s intervention will be dependent on the willingness of the governor to implement the agreements he reached with the lawmakers.

“We love the President and we respect him, but we also know that the President being an agreement keeper would not call the assembly to withdraw the impeachment notice unless Fubara has started implementing the agreements he entered into with the lawmakers.

“So, the only way the Assembly will back down is when the governor implements the agreements, otherwise nobody will save the governor this time around.”

    Two lawmakers beg for Fubara

The members of the Assembly – Sylvanus Nwankwo, Majority Leader and Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency) – pleaded with their colleagues to tamper justice with mercy.

Sylvanus said in Port-Harcourt that following pleas from various elders and leaders within and outside the state, there was a need to amicably resolve the crisis.

He said: “You are all aware that the Rivers State House of Assembly issued a notice of impeachment on the governor and his deputy. But we are appealing to our fellow colleagues to tamper justice with mercy.

“Let us see how we can solve this matter outside impeachment proceedings. We are appealing to the conscience of our colleagues, having listened to many pleas, calls from our elders and leaders both within and outside the state pleading for leniency.

“We are begging our colleagues to reconsider our steps and see how this matter can be resolved amicably, although the governor and the deputy governor had infringed the constitution”.

Abbey urged Fubara to stop taking steps that could lead to the violation of the Constitution to facilitate the resolution of the matter.

He said: “The governor has infringed on parts of the constitution. But we are human beings and we want to plead with our colleagues to please reconsider. You don’t swing an axe the way you raise it. But the governor must also take steps not to infringe further on the constitution to bring an amicable solution.”

In the PANDEF arrangement Igali  noted that Wike and Fubara are automatic  members of PANDEF Board of Trustees by the virtue of their positions, adding that they could be accorded that position once they are out of government.

He said all former governors from Southsouth states are automatic BoT member.

King Alfred Papapraye Diete Spiff, former Governor of Rivers State and Amayanabo of Town Brass in Bayelsa State, who inaugurated the peace committee, said there is nothing that cannot be resolved.

Spiff who is the Co-chair of PANDEF BoT  urged both parties to sheathe the sword for the unity of the state and region.

As part of the terms of reference, the committee is charged to  identify main actors in the crisis and reach out to other stakeholders.

The committee is also expected to open dialogue between Fubara and the lawmakers.

    Other terms of reference are:

“ Fully identifying the main actors in the crisis between the Governor and the Speaker of the House of Assembly.

“ Reaching out to other critical players, especially the Minister of the FCT, other former Governors, elders and traditional rulers and top political leaders.

“Facilitating Dialogue especially by encouraging open communication between Governor Fubara and the State House of Assembly to address grievances and work towards a peaceful resolution.

“ Recommending steps to restoring reconciliation and Stability.

“ Finding ways to restore law and order in Rivers State, ensuring the welfare and safety of citizen.

“ Encouraging tolerance, compromise, and political balance among. stakeholders to prevent further escalation.

“ Ensuring that any resolution respects the democratic will of the people and adherence to constitutional norms.

“ Ensuring that sensitive information shared during the reconciliation process is kept confidential to foster trust and facilitate open dialogue.

“ Consulting Stakeholders: Engaging with all stakeholders, leaders, and groups directly or indirectly involved or impacted by the crisis to gather perspectives to sustainable peace building consensus.”

Agabi, who spoke on behalf of the committee, assured that peace will be restored.

Lamenting that the crisis had lingered for so long, he said the members of the panel heeded the  call of the 97 years old monarch to mediate in the crisis.

However, Agabi said:“ The committee is not appointed to sit in judgment over the parties. We have no competence to do so. Our duty is to appeal to the parties to be reconciled with one to another, and we now do so.

“We appeal to the parties to embrace reconciliation. We urge them, we beg them, we appeal to them. Sacrifices are called for. Make them and let there be peace.

“We are appointed to explore ways of bringing the escalating political crisis in Rivers State to an end. This crisis has persisted for too long. If it continues any further, it will call into question the commitment of the parties involved to the interest of the people of Rivers State and of the nation that is compelled to share in the pains and anxieties of that state.”

He added: “We cannot afford to stand by and do nothing or pass by on the other side as Rivers state, a state whose talents and resources have blessed and continue to bless the nation struggles with issues of political power.”

APC forum rejects calls for Wike’s resignation

The North-Central APC forum cautioned against the call for Wike’s resignation or removal, saying that it could derail the ongoing development in Abuja and undermine the gains recorded under the Tinubu administration.

The Forum also cautioned against pressure on the President  to redeploy the minister, describing the agitation as politically motivated and detrimental to the interests of the Northcentral zone.

The Chairman of the Forum, Saleh Zazzaga, said Wike should be allowed to continue his work in the FCT, which is an integral part of the Northcentral region.

He said: “The North-Central All Progressives Congress, APC, Forum rejects calls for the resignation of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

“The minister is performing well in the FCT under an APC administration and we frown at such calls, especially as it concerns the development of the FCT, which is part of the North-Central.

“Some people stayed eight years as FCT minister without anything to show for it, but under two years, Wike has turned the FCT around.”

Disquiet, heavy security as Kano Gov joins APC

There was a tense atmosphere and disquiet in Kano state on Monday, following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was rescheduled to Monday after the January 5 date.

Governor Yusuf won the 2023 election on the platform of the NNPP but decided to join the ruling APC to improve on his development efforts in the state, his aides say.

It was also learnt that Yusuf’s decision stems from the unresolved leadership crises and multiple court cases within the NNPP that could jeopardise his mandate.

Although, there was no official speech from the State Government or formal ceremony heralding the defection, it was clear that the Governor and his administration were no longer of the NNPP platform.

Unlike before the defection, some government officials were walking around the Government House premises with caps emblazoned with the infinity insignia of the famous President Bola Tinubu’s freedom cap.

The Tinubu cap had surfaced since Sunday at a Government House function attended by the Governor and cabinet members.

The NNPP flag at the main entrance to the seat of power was removed leaving the pole naked, while new national flags were flying.

The NNPP flag at the Deputy Governor’s Office was also seen removed when The Nation correspondent visited the two premises.

Senior government officials were not in their offices, except their junior counterparts spotted holding talks in groups.

The discussants did not wear the Kwankwasiyya caps and their discussions were not without the defection.

Heavy security apparatuses, including armoured tanks and personnel, were deployed at the State Government House.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Service (DSS) and those of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were seen tightening security at the gate of the State House.

A grapevine source told The Nation that the Governor skipped the ceremony to prevent violence.

“We are no longer in NNPP. The most important things about the defection to APC have been done and the process is still ongoing,” a member of the cabinet told The Nation on Monday.

Credible sources told The Nation that Yusuf was billed to fly abroad with his loyal stakeholders to brief President Tinubu, having defected.

It was gathered the ceremony was skipped to avoid violence between the governor’s supporters and those of his benefactor Rabiu Kwankwaso who has kicked against the defection.

Kwankwaso, a former Governor of Kano, who doubles as factional leader of the NNPP, has vehemently disapproved the move, insisting that the governor should relinquish his position if he must defect.

The disagreement between Yusuf and Yusuf has divided the state.

It was however, gathered Governor Yusuf decamped with all the chairmen of local government councils and all NNPP House of Assembly members to the APC.

JUST IN: Heavy security in Ijebu-Ode as Fusengbuwa ruling house begins nomination process for next Awujale

There was a heavy security on Monday at the Bisirodipe Hall in GRA, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, as the Fusengbuwa ruling House commenced its nomination process to select the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

Dozens of operatives drawn from the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were stationed within and around the venue ahead of the exercise, which was scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon.

The hall premises were crowded with members of the ruling house, including the head, Otunba Lateef Adebayo Owoyemi, delegates, observers, and residents keen to follow the proceedings. Security personnel had difficulty managing individuals who lacked entry clearance or could not justify their presence.

A group believed to be supporters of Fuji musician and Olori Omooba of Ijebuland, Wasiu Ayinde (KWAM 1), also arrived at the gate but were denied access for not having the required pass.

Ayinde has recently raised concerns over alleged attempts by the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to exclude him from the selection process.

In a petition to Governor Dapo Abiodun, the musician, who is said to belong to the Fidipote Ruling House, alleged that the family had taken steps contrary to the Chieftaincy Declaration and the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State.

His allegations were captured in a letter dated January 8, 2026, issued by his counsel, Dr. Wahab Shittu, SAN.

The claims followed an earlier suit filed at the Ogun State High Court in Ijebu Ode, where Ayinde sought to halt the process.

The court declined to grant an interim injunction, and he later withdrew the case without explanation.

The nomination process is resuming after an earlier suspension, with the Fusengbuwa Ruling House directed by the Ijebu Ode Local Government—through a letter dated January 6, 2026—to conclude the exercise within 14 days.

Ayinde said he was taken aback when the family’s Public Relations Officer, Prince Adeleye Lateef Ademuyiwa, issued a notice directing aspirants to obtain nomination cards and appear before a screening committee, scheduling the exercise for Monday, January 12, 2026.

Scores of princes have indicated interest in succeeding the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away at 91 on July 13, 2025, after a 65-year reign.

The letter read, “It is a matter of deep concern to our client that all these directives, which contravene the Chieftaincy Declaration, Obas and Chiefs Law, and the letter from the Secretary of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, were included in the family’s letter dated January 6, 2026.

“It is clear that there are plans by the leadership of the ruling house to disenfranchise members desirous of participating in the nomination of candidates for the Awujale stool.

“We wish to emphasize that all members of the ruling house are entitled to attend the meeting to nominate candidates of their choice.

“A group of people in the ruling house cannot usurp these rights. The directive providing for screening and nomination by delegates is inconsistent with both the spirit and letter of the Chieftaincy Declaration and the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State 2021.

“In the interest of justice and compliance with due process, we urge timely intervention to address these concerns, ensuring the integrity of the process and protecting our client’s rights.”

    • Olukoyede: I inherited investigation into ex-AGF tenure

Immediate-Past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), is facing a fresh investigation over the arms and ammunition found in his house.

The Nation learnt that the arms were uncovered at his Kebbi country home by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during a search.

The anti-graft agency, it was further learnt, handed them over to the Department of State Service (DSS) for a comprehensive probe because it is not within its remit to do so.

The number of arms and ammunition could not be immediately ascertained, but it was gathered that they are high in number to attract a full DSS investigation.

Malami, who was granted bail last week along with his sons – Abdulaziz, Abiru-Rahman, and others – is still in the Kuje correctional centre, having been unable to perfect his bail conditions.

But, sources said he might be taking things slowly to stall the DSS investigation into the weapons found in his house.

“The former minister is being separately investigated for allegedly having arms in his house in Birnin Kebbi. The inventory of the shock find has been handed over to the DSS.

“It is now left to Malami to explain to the DSS how he came about the arms. That’s why he is yet to perfect his bail conditions. He is holed up in prison to avoid arrest by the DSS.

“DSS operatives are within the precincts of Kuje Correctional Service to invite Malami. He got wind of their presence and raised the alarm.  But the law must take its course.”

Another source within the EFCC said Malami had yet to meet his bail conditions.

“By our records, the ex-AGF is still in custody. We saw all manners of fake clips on social media on his purported arrival and rousing reception in Kebbi State,” the source said.

The source added: “The investigation into Malami’s activities during his tenure began when former EFCC Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu was in office.

“Investigation continued through the administration of another Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Chukkol, to the present Executive Chairman. Chukkol, who works in the agency, was in charge briefly before Olukoyede’s appointment.

“There is nothing vindictive about his investigation since 2019. It is an inherited case, and the ex-AGF knows this.”

Olukoyede confirmed that he inherited the Malami case during an interview last night on a national television.

A Federal High Court in Abuja last week ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 assets linked to Malami and his two sons.

The assets have been valued at N213, 234,120,000.

The court has, however, given Malami and the sons or any other claimant a 14-day leave to show proof that the assets were legally acquired.

Failure to present legitimate claims within 14 days may lead to the permanent loss of the assets to the Federal Government.

The court’s order was based on the invocation of the Non-Conviction Asset Forfeiture Clause in the EFCC Establishment Act.

The EFCC had applied to the Federal High Court to seize the suspicious properties in Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, and Birnin-Kebbi.
