Anger as suspected herders kill 100 in fresh Benue attack

    • At least two soldiers among the victims
    • Weeping Deputy Gov flays killings as barbaric

It was another day of deaths and misery in Benue State yesterday after suspected herdsmen killed about 100 people in a renewed attack. Many others were maimed.

Yelewata, a community in Guma Local Government Area of the state, was the scene of the pre-dawn attack, the latest in the recurring wave of mayhem by gunmen.

Deputy Governor Sam Ode broke down in tears yesterday on sighting the pile of corpses from the mayhem.

    He called it barbaric.

The border community between Benue and Nasarawa states lies on the Makurdi-Lafia highway.

The Yelewata casualties included Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), women and children.

An unconfirmed report said at least two security men were killed while trying to repel the gunmen.

The invaders reportedly struck at about 2am yesterday while it was raining and operated unhindered for about two hours, killing, maiming and destroying foodstuff and property.

A resident James Utor who escaped the attack said the people were fast asleep when the first gunshot was fired.

Benue Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Edet Edeme, an ASP, confirmed the incident, saying the Commissioner of Police had deployed a tactical squad to the community to deal with the situation.

He was silent on the casualty figure.

Officials of the state government gave conflicting figures.

Anadolu, the Turkish news agency, quoted  Joseph Har, Special Adviser to the Benue State governor on security and internal affairs, as saying “we have recovered 102 bodies”, while Tersoo Kula, spokesman for the governor, told another foreign news agency that “no fewer than 45 people have been confirmed killed.”

“We are aware of the ugly incident that happened in the early hours of today, and we are investigating the killing of more than 100 people. We have recovered 102 bodies,” Har said.

The Chairman of Guma Local Government Area in Benue State, Maurice Orwough, simply said many people were killed while more than 26 others had been hospitalised.

The attack came days after residents allegedly received information of planned coordinated attacks by marauders.

One account said the gunmen entered the community from two points and succeeded in overpowering the youths and the police personnel who confronted them.

They then proceeded to open fire on defenceless IDPs who were sleeping in market stalls and other residents.

Simultaneously, another band of gunmen reportedly made for another community in the local government area, Daudu, but met a strong resistance by the youths and security personnel.

A community leader in Yelewata, Mr. Matthew Mnyan, said the terror began at about 11pm on Friday when the gunmen “came from the Western part of Yelewata and started shooting.”

Mnyan, a former acting Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), added: “The policemen and young people who were there tried to engage them. Suddenly, another group came from the Eastern part of the community, and they overwhelmed those trying to resist them.

“They killed our people, poured petrol on the stalls in the market and burnt them.

“In those stalls, we had people who moved from places like Branch Udei and people displaced from nearby villages, who slept in them because of the proximity of the police and soldiers there.

“And we learnt no soldier came out to defend the people.

“As of now, from the names they are putting together and the number of families and people that were burnt and killed are running to over 200.

“They killed and burned people in the houses.

“They will pour petrol and burn the whole place where people were sleeping.

“We had a family of 15, some families of 12, men with their two wives, children and every one of them burnt. It is a terrible sight.

“I have asked them to search for the families and put the names together because some have been burned to ashes.

“Those who were rushed to the hospital were up to 46.

“So far, I learnt that about 20 have died and we are still putting the reports together.

“For over one week we received reports from Nasarawa State that the terrorists planned to attack Yelewata, Ukoho, Ortese, Yogbo and Daudu.

“So they are moving to attack these places simultaneously.

“Fortunately, that same day, the ones at Daudu were dislodged, and we learnt five soldiers and police personnel were killed, sadly.

“We learnt more than 300 terrorists were camped close to Daudu.

The President of the Association of United Farmers Benue Valley, AUFBV, Chief Dennis Gbongbon, claimed that Lakurawa bandits were responsible for the carnage.

He said the casualty figure might be more than what was being speculated yesterday.

He said:”I am right here on the ground. Eighty-five per cent of the victims are IDPs who ran from Antsa, Dooka, Kadarko, and Giza areas, and took refuge in various stores in Yelewata market and among residents. Many have been hospitalised.”

“The IDPs in Yelewata are still farmers. They only ran to take refuge there.

“While it is important to separate them, it would help us understand the deteriorating situation farmers are confronted with.

“Even having run from sacked homes to IDPs camp, terror still followed them unabated.”

The Benue State Police Command spokesman, Udeme Edet, said the attack occurred “in the early hours of today (yesterday), where suspected bandits invaded Yelewata town.

“The Police and Tactical Teams posted to the town and reinforcement responded swiftly to the attack and engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange, and some of the attackers were killed in the process.

“But it is with great sadness that we report that some individuals lost their lives and others sustained injuries.

“The Police, however, have not relented and are still in pursuit of the attackers and will continue to keep everyone safe.”

Chairman of Guma Local Government Area in Benue State, Maurice Orwough, told Channels Television after visiting the scenes of the attack that herdsmen carried out the attack unprovoked, following an early attempt to attack Daudu town before the military halted the attack.

According to Orwough, the herdsmen then moved towards Yelewata at about 11.30 pm to attack Yelewata, where there were just four soldiers posted, while over one hundred of the herdsmen opened fire on the people.

He called for increased surveillance in the area to protect his people.

Deputy Governor Ode, during an assessment tour of the scene yesterday, assured the people that government would do everything within its power to provide maximum security for them.

Paul Omale, a civil rights activist, called on the Federal Government to deploy more troops to the state to secure the lives of farmers who are at the receiving end of the attacks.

James Ukeyima told The Nation that attacks have caused untold hardship to farmers as they no longer go to farm.

Ukeyima said: “The sustained attacks on farmers have depleted Benue as the food basket of the nation.

Ex-commissioner wants FG to construct highway along River Benue corridor

President/Founder of Apa Legacy Sustainability Initiative in Benue State, Dr. David Olofu, has urged the Federal Government to construct a highway along the corridor of River Benue from Lokoja through Benue communities to Taraba State as part of the effort to stem the wave of insecurity and killings in the state.

Dr. Olofu made the call during a visit to parts of Apa Local Government Area in Benue State, which were recently attacked by herdsmen.

He noted that the ungovernable space within the corridor has contributed significantly to the murderous activities of herdsmen.

“These criminal elements take advantage of the vulnerability of the spaces as their habitat where they hide to carry out their nefarious activities,” he said.

He emphasised that constructing a coastal highway along the corridors of River Benue from Lokoja through Benue communities to Taraba would not only deter criminals but also generate economic activities along the corridor.

Dr. Olofu also donated cash relief to the victims and expressed sympathy to the communities.

He asked the federal and state governments to focus on providing good roads in rural areas as a precursor to tackling herders’ criminality.

“If we have good roads, our military and security agencies can easily and swiftly rush to rescue our communities if they are timely informed about any attack,” he said.

Dr. Olofu described the frequency of these unprovoked attacks by suspected herdsmen as an epidemic and called on the people to unite against the menace.

He also urged the youth not to abdicate their responsibility of policing their communities to the elders and vulnerable, saying they should organise themselves into vigilante groups.

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia recently accused unnamed politicians and federal legislators of instigating violent attacks in the state.

He said that the interim report of a judicial panel he set up indicted many big names.

“Some politicians who are very functional and are in the National Assembly, and are in Abuja, are the architects and arrowheads of not just instigating but harbouring and keeping these people; keeping them in the bushes and taking care of all their bills and buying all the gadgets for them,” he said.

He alleged that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume and his associates had not spoken out or taken action on the wave of killings and violence, particularly in the Sankera region.

However, the Office of the SGF in a swift reaction, debunked claims that Akume was silent or inactive in the face of the insecurity plaguing the state.

Alia vowed to take up the matter as soon as he received the full report.

The Benue State National Assembly Caucus also denied the governor’s allegation.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the caucus, speaking through the senator representing Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, Comrade Abba Patrick Abba, dismissed the allegation as baseless, reckless and irresponsible.

    • Lagos warns of imminent heavy rainfall
    • Mokwa monarch fears outbreak of epidemic

The skies opened up yesterday across several states of the federation rendering some roads flooded

The rain began early in the day just hours after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) warned of thundery and rainy weather activities between yesterday and tomorrow across Nigeria.

A similar warning came from the Lagos State Government yesterday

The NiMET weather outlook predicted early morning thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna and Adamawa states in the north yesterday.

According to it, thunderstorms with rains were anticipated over parts of Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Borno, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe and Bauchi states later in the day.

“In the North-Central region, early morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of Benue, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa states,” it said.

It followed up the warning with a post on its X account yesterday, drawing attention to the likelihood of flash floods in Akwa Ibom,Sokoto, Zamfara, Plateau, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Abia, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ekiti, Delta and Rivers states.

It said: “As the rainy season intensifies, flash flooding remains a growing concern across Nigeria.

“Several states are already showing signs of significant rainfall accumulation, leading to a higher risk of flash floods.”

It listed Akwa Ibom as a high risk area, especially in urban and low-lying communities.

It warned residents to clear drainage systems, keep gutters, storm drains and canals free from debris to prevent blockages and local flooding.

Yesterday rainfall lasted several hours in Lagos metropolis.

Rainwater took over many roads and streets, slowing down vehicular movement.

The country is still reeling from the tragic effects of the recent flooding of Mokwa,Niger State.

Over 200 lives were lost in the incident which President Bola Tinubu described as distressing.

Lagos warns of imminent heavy rainfall

Lagos State Environment and Water Resources Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab warned residents of the state to prepare for potential flash floods and intense rainfall expected in  the coming days.

The Commissioner, in a statement through the ministry’s Director Public Affairs, Mr. Kunle Adeshina, cited weather forecasts showing geostationary imagery with indications of thunderstorms, dense cloud cover, and widespread convective rainfall.

These conditions, according to him, could result in flash flooding in many parts of the state, particularly in low-lying areas and communities located near rivers and lagoons.

Wahab urged residents to remain alert, explaining that the forecast is a continuation of earlier warnings issued at the start of the rainy season.

He noted that the coastal nature of Lagos, combined with rising lagoon levels during periods of heavy rain, often causes tidal locks that can prevent effective drainage, worsening flood situations.

Besides, the Commissioner advised parents and guardians to closely monitor their children, particularly those currently on mid-term break, to prevent them from playing in floodwaters or attempting to swim in drainage channels — a practice that poses serious risks during such periods.

Motorists and pedestrians were also cautioned not to attempt to wade through flooded roads, as the depth and strength of the water may lead to vehicles being submerged or individuals being swept away by strong currents.

Wahab stressed the ongoing efforts of the state government to maintain and clear drainage systems year-round but added that when rainfall exceeds normal levels, community cooperation becomes crucial.

He also warned against the dangerous habit of dumping refuse in drains, reminding the public that such actions block waterways and increase the likelihood of flooding.

Offenders will be held accountable, he added.

We’re prepared in Anambra, says commissioner

The Anambra State Government yesterday expressed its preparedness for any flood-related emergency.

Environment Commissioner Felix Odimegwu told reporters in Awka that his ministry, in collaboration with relevant agencies, had intensified the sensitisation of the people to this year’s rainfall and likely flooding.

A downpour on Monday had caused severe flooding around Zik’s Avenue, Iweka Road near the popular Ochanja Market in Onitsha, the commercial centre of the state.

The situation disrupted business activities in the area.

Odimegwu said the campaign and sensitisation was in response to early warnings from NiMET which listed  Anambra among the states at high risk of flooding during the rainy season.

He said: “After the first six months seasonal prediction by NiMet, we disseminated the information and notified residents, especially those living at the coastal areas about the upcoming rainfall and flooding consequences, and urged the general public to be absolutely careful and prepared for it.

“The state government has consistently sensitises the people to desist from blocking water channels and drainages in and around surroundings of their houses to pave way for easy flow of flooding.

“The blockage of water drainages is the root cause of man-made flooding.

“What we are doing is that whatever would cause flooding in the urban areas by man, we will try to prevent it.

“But if it is the flooding caused by river rising above the sea level, we will give warning to people living in the riverine areas to prepare on how to vacate.”

Mai Garin Mokwa seeks urgent fumigation to avert outbreak

The Mai Garin Mokwa (Ndalile of Mokwa), Alhaji Muhammed Aliyu, has called for urgent fumigation of the area to prevent the possible outbreak of diseases.

He made the call when he received the officials of the National Council of Women’s Societies (NCWS) who paid him a sympathy visit at his palace in Mokwa, following the recent flood disaster that claimed over 200 lives and displaced many.

Ndalile of Mokwa said the call for the fumigation became necessary due to the discovery of some decomposing bodies in different parts of the community.

According to him, the major issue was the strong odour emanating from the area, which he said was suggestive of the presence of decomposing bodies under debris

“If nothing urgent is done, it is capable of causing a major health disaster,” he said.

He commended the members of the NCWS for providing vital support to the flood victims, particularly women and children through their timely donations.

The National President of NCWS, Mrs Justina Yakubu, expressed sympathy to the families of those that lost their loved ones, homes and means of livelihoods.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and property, and our heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods.

“We wish to, on behalf of our members, extend our deepest condolences to you, the people of Mokwa, and the families affected by the recent flood disaster.

“We pray that God should take care of the orphans and the widows and give them open doors so that they will be able to rebuild their homes and settle down,” she added.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that officials of the NCWS also visited the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps where they donated relief items including clothes, food and toiletries to the flood victims.

One of the victims, Felicia Abba, thanked the NCWS for the visit and the support given to them.

  • Soyinka to Tinubu: Unveil killers of Kudirat Abiola, Dele Giwa, Bola Ige

Soyinka to Tinubu: Unveil killers of Kudirat Abiola, Dele Giwa, Bola Ige

    • Warns against trivialising June 12

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka yesterday called for a fresh investigation into the unresolved murders, including those of Mrs. Kudirat Abiola, Dele Giwa and slain Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige.

He lamented that the clues to the assassinations were polluted in the past, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reopen the files.

Giwa, a journalist, was killed after receiving a parcel bomb at his office in Ikeja in 1986.

Kudirat was killed at the Lagos/Ibadan toll gate on his way to the American Embassy in Lagos.

Ige was murdered in his bedroom in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, in 2001.

Soyinka, who spoke on ‘June 12: Romancing the embers,’ cautioned against trivialising the anniversary of the historic June 12, 1993 poll won by the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Chief Moshood Abiola.

He also warned against the trend of fake news about the June 12 struggle, saying they are misleading and confusing.

The Nobel Laureate, who spoke with reporters at the Freedom Park on Lagos Island, Lagos, rejected the former military President Ibrahim Babangida’s account on June 12, saying that he should be courageous to tell the truth in his future books.

He described June 12 as a multidimensional struggle involving the academia, unions, clergy, professionals, politicians, military and the civil society, stressing that those honoured by President Tinubu, including himself, were representative of the lot.

Alluding to the tension between power and freedom, he said the will of the people to achieve freedom would always wax stronger.

Soyinka, who said the President released a thematic list of honours, added that June 12 meant several things to several people.

The 91-year-old former university lecturer paid tribute to Abiola’s wife, Kudirat, who he said came out like the Aba women of those days to fight for justice and freedom.

He doubted if any healing process can erase the memory of the gruesome murders from the memory of their loved ones.

Soyinka decried the abolition of history in the curriculum by the military regime, noting that it has prevented the youth from knowing the antecedents of their country.

He recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari once promised to unravel some unusual murders, lamenting that they were not eventually investigated.

Soyinka urged President Tinubu to pick up the files and commence fresh investigations into the murders of Giwa, Kudirat and Ige and bring their killers to justice.

Stressing that there are clues, he said if the murder of an Attorney-General had happened in the United States, the authorities would have left no stone unturned in apprehending the killers.

Soyinka recalled that the American Embassy had offered to assist in unravelling some of the murders, recalling that the Federal Government turned a deaf ear.

He said: “Let us enter it as a challenge for Tinubu. Let us investigate and call witnesses.”

Soyinka said there are some misconceptions about June 12 among the participants, adding that people came into the struggle with different motives.

He said many were brutally treated by the conduct of the military while many were involved in the agitations for gains.

Soyinka added: “Many negative things happened with the struggle, and there were a lot of mistakes and inconsistencies.

Noting that June 12 began before the poll day and subsequent struggles, he lamented that it is now being trivialised by false claims and for the advancement of political ambition.

However, he explained that the struggle affected the key actors differently, recalling that those who were big men in Nigeria had to endure discomfort in exile.

He hailed Chiefs Ralph Obiorah and Raloh Uwuche for refusing to listen to their people who discouraged them from fighting for justice, adding that they fought based on their convictions.

Soyinka also paid tribute to his cousin and compatriot, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, a quiet and brave fighter who undertook a suicide action by procuring a device with the aim of physically confronting the maximum ruler, the late Gen. Sani Abacha.

He said: “I persuaded Beko to stay outside because I knew that the killers were after his head.”

Soyinka recalled that when Abacha accused him of training people to topple him, Radio Kudirat was used to counter the misinformation.

He said healing for many pro-democracy crusaders is difficult because of the prolonged trauma.

He dismissed Babangida’s account of the annulment, urging the former military President to give the correct account in another book.

Soyinka said:”I called Babangida and I told him that his account is deficient. His account should be read side by side with that of Prof. Omo Omoruyi.

“At a time, he became a General without an Army. Military people and civilians, monarchs visited him and said he should not de-annul June 12.

“I told him that he had not finished his memoir. He should try to write another book.”

Soyinka decried the demolition in Ilaje Bariga, saying that people should not be dehumanised in the quest for development.

He said development is possible without inflicting pains on the people.

My visit to Tinubu not for personal gain – Bakare

Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, Tunde Bakare, has dismissed speculations that his recent visit to President Bola Tinubu was driven by personal ambition or political gain.

Bakare, a former APC presidential aspirant, met with the president last week at the State House—a move that stirred rumours of possible political alignment or interest in appointments.

Addressing the claims during a church sermon, Bakare clarified that his meeting with Tinubu was strictly in the interest of national development.

“Some people think I went there to settle myself. What have I ever taken before? What they gave me, I returned. What am I looking for?” he said.

Speaking to journalists after the visit, Bakare said the discussion focused on national progress. “It’s not just about criticism; it’s about ensuring the country works. My vision is to see Nigeria function in my lifetime.”

He noted that while he made recommendations to the president, it was up to Tinubu to act on them.

  • Six European countries international students should avoid in 2025

Six European countries international students should avoid in 2025

As international education continues to evolve, many African students—especially from West Africa—are increasingly looking to Europe for affordable and high-quality education. While some European countries offer student-friendly visa processes, post-study opportunities, and part-time work options, others are becoming increasingly challenging for prospective international students.

In 2025, several European nations have tightened entry processes, made visa appointments nearly impossible to secure, or created unfavorable conditions for international students. Whether due to bureaucratic bottlenecks, high rejection rates, or restrictive student policies.

Here are six European countries international students may want to avoid in 2025, especially if you are applying from Africa.

    1. Germany: Tougher access without scholarships or strong grades

Germany has long been a favorite for international students due to its tuition-free public universities. However, the story is changing rapidly. For those without scholarships or outstanding academic records, securing a visa appointment is becoming a major hurdle. The demand is extremely high, and German embassies in Africa—especially Nigeria—are overwhelmed. If you don’t have stellar results or a DAAD scholarship, your chances of timely processing are slim.

    2. Poland: Long waiting time for appointments

Poland is another popular destination for affordable education, but getting a student visa appointment as a new applicant has become increasingly difficult. With long queues at the embassy and limited slots, many students find themselves stuck in limbo—admitted into a Polish university but unable to secure a visa appointment in time. This is a growing concern, especially for Nigerian and Ghanaian applicants.

    3. Czech Republic: One Embassy for nine countries

One major bottleneck for West African students applying to the Czech Republic is that there is only one embassy serving the entire region, and it’s located in Nigeria. This embassy handles student applications from about nine countries, including Ghana, Cameroon, and others. As a result, getting an appointment is incredibly difficult, with wait times stretching several months or more.

    4. Luxembourg: Only the top performers stand a chance

Luxembourg may be a high-income country with a robust education system, but it is highly selective about the kind of students it admits. The country prioritizes applicants with exceptional academic records. Without top-tier credentials, it is very unlikely to secure a visa appointment—making it a frustrating destination for average students with limited funding.

    5. Malta: Soaring Denial Rates Due to High Demand

Malta stands out as one of the few English-speaking countries in Europe, which makes it an attractive destination for students from Anglophone Africa. However, this popularity has caused a surge in visa applications, and unfortunately, the denial rate has also skyrocketed. Many applicants, even those who meet the requirements, are turned down as the Maltese embassy becomes increasingly selective. Students are advised to consider this risk carefully before applying.

    6. Finland: Language Barrier and Work Restrictions

Finland offers innovative programs and a safe environment, but its work restrictions for non-Finnish speakers pose a major challenge. Unlike other European countries where international students can work part-time regardless of language, Finland generally requires students to understand Finnish to access most part-time jobs. This makes it hard to support oneself while studying, especially for those without financial backing.

  • 2027: Again, Tinubu tells opposition, put your houses in order

2027: Again, Tinubu tells opposition, put your houses in order

    • Wike: Coalition died on day of conception
    • PDP will be hammered, carried on stretcher if internal crises persist— Ikechukwu

From President Bola Tinubu came a fresh warning yesterday to opposition parties to put their houses in order before the 2027 general election.

“The opposition should put their houses together before the next election so that nobody will accuse anybody of trying to stifle the opposition,” the President said in Abuja, 24 hours after his Democracy Day speech in which he said it was not his responsibility to help opposition  parties organise their affairs.

His speech yesterday was at the commissioning of the newly constructed Left-Hand Service Carriageway of Outer Southern Expressway OSEX Stage II from Ring Road 1 Junction to Wasa Junction, also known as Apo-Wasa Road, Abua where he was represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, whose ministry executed the project, said at the ceremony that he had no regret for naming the newly refurbished International Conference Centre Abuja after the President.

Akpabio, speaking for the President yesterday, said: “The President wants you to come together. If you cannot come together, the President cannot help you to come together.

“This is politics. And you will never come together when you continue to tell lies on a daily basis. Everything, you condemn. Nothing is good in your country. Was Nigeria like this in 1960? Was Abuja like this three years ago?

“Last year, you (Wike) gave us numerous projects and this year you repeated the same thing.

“Nobody will remember you for the way you answered your critics. They will remember you for the legacies that you are leaving on ground. And we are seeing the legacy.

“Because it is you. If they were the ones, they would have seen. But I can tell you that even the blind that walk through this Wasa Road will know that the President is working.

“This road stretching from Ring Road 1 junction all the way to Wasa Junction is a significant addition to the road network in the heart of Abuja.

“This very vital infrastructure fully demonstrates our commitment. It demonstrates our commitment to sustainable urban development, enhanced mobility, and improved quality of life for the people of the federal capital, and by extension to all Nigerians and visitors alike.”

Wike, responding to criticism over the naming of the International Conference Centre after Tinubu, said the President had done much for the FCT and was therefore deserving of the honour.

He also denied allegation that the contract for the refurbishing of the complex was inflated.

Built in 1991 at a cost of N240 million, the conference centre was rehabilitated with N39 billion.

Wike, who attributed the increase to inflation, also explained that the 15-kilometre Left-Hand Service Carriageway of Outer Southern Expressway OSEX Stage II was awarded in 2017 at a cost of N6 billion, but that in 2021, the cost was increased to N21 billion after variation.

His words: “Except you have chosen not to see; if God gave you eyes to see and you say, ‘I will not see’, then be blind. It is nobody’s fault.

“You know, there are people naturally, they don’t have good taste. They don’t have good taste. Everything in that International Conference Centre, everything was changed. If you love this country, you cannot criticise.

“I don’t normally watch them. I don’t like to know people’s names who don’t have anything to offer. If you want to die, I have a lot of land. I have land to give you where they will bury you. So if you want to die, you die.

“Why would you not commend somebody who has done well? You are not happy that they named ICC after Mr. President. Go and kill yourself.”

Wike said he is entitled and has the capacity to defend his boss.

“If you did not do well to defend your boss when you had the opportunity, it’s not our fault. I am here, I will defend my boss. And I have the capacity to defend my boss.

“I am not here to please unnecessarily critical people. I am here to please the residents of Abuja. In fact, I will continue to give you high blood pressure,” he said.

The minister also took a swipe at opposition figures, calling them ineffective.

“People have made promises to you. Nobody has fulfilled the promise. You are giving attention to those who you don’t know whether their name will be on the ballot or not. Coalition that was born and died the same day,” he said.

Speaking specifically on the achievements of his ministry in the last two years, Wike said: “Seventeen days, it has never happened in the history of this country, where a President will commission projects from day one to day 17.

“I am talking about commissioning; not flag-off.”

2027: PDP is doomed, if internal crises persist, says Ikechukwu

Reviewing the internal crises in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 elections, the Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, Okey Ikechukwu, said the opposition party has failed to provide formidable opposition owing to its internal crises.

He said the once robust party that used to run impressive campaigns has now “shrunk into a whimpering collection of confounded men and women who are pretending to have a political party.”

He added: “What else does the PDP do today other than talk about its quarrels? Well, occasionally, it makes press releases attacking the APC, thinking that that is political opposition.”

According to him, the real opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s administration comprises activists, civil society groups, concerned commentators, and elder statesmen who speak on national issues.

“The whole point of opposition is that you present a profile that will make you attractive to the next person, that will make somebody say to themselves, ‘No, no, no, I need this man to replace this other guy; they don’t know what they are doing.’

“Please, tell me what makes the PDP attractive today. Internally, it is in total disarray,” he said.

The professor said that the party’s current preparations for the 2027 general elections, amid the internal crises, do not show that it will perform better at the polls, except it manages the problems.

“So, in the next election, it will participate but it will not contest; it sounds contradictory.

“You are taking part in an event but your preparation is such that we know that you are going to get there and get beaten thoroughly and carried out on a stretcher, except a dramatic reconfiguration occurs within that party, with clear attention to the need to modify the optics of people you see in the party,” he said.

On the role of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in PDP, Ikechukwu said: “Wike, whether you like him or not, you must ask yourself: is this man a fool? The answer is no. Does he know what he is doing? Maybe. Can you disregard him? The answer is no.

“ It is the PDP that should be embarrassed that Wike is still a member, given all that he has done and all that he’s doing.

“It’s the PDP that should be embarrassed that it has not been able to manage such a man because Wike will be a political asset to anybody he works for. For those he is working for now, he is a political asset.

“But to allow him to bestride both lanes and be doing 160 kilometers per hour shows there is nobody controlling the traffic.

“The PDP, with all due respect to the distinguished people in that party, is making itself look more ridiculous, not every day but every hour as the next hour comes. They should stop kidding themselves.”

Addressing concerns over alleged plot by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to turn Nigeria into a one party state, President Tinubu in his Democracy Day speech on Thursday had said there was no such plan.

“To those who ring the alarm that the APC is intent on a one-party state, I offer you a most personal promise. While your alarm may be as a result of your panic, it rings in error,” he said.

Continuing, the President declared: “At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and at no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria.

“I have never attempted to alter any political party registration with INEC.

“Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist.

“For me, I would say try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you do so. It is, indeed, a pleasure to witness you in such disarray.”

  • Rivers: Wike, Fubara in fresh reconciliatory meeting

Rivers: Wike, Fubara in fresh reconciliatory meeting

    • State’s Reps caucus blasts Dickson over emergency rule position

The suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reached out afresh to his estranged godfather, Nyesom Wike, as part of  ongoing effort to patch up their soured relationship.

Fubara is understood to have visited the Federal Capital Territory Minister in his Abuja residence on Monday for peace talks.

Details of their discussion were not immediately available, but the meeting came amid fresh calls from some quarters for the reinstatement of the suspended governor.

Some of Fubara’s supporters had even hoped that President Bola Tinubu would lift the governor’s suspension and terminate the emergency rule in the state during his Democracy Day speech at the National Assembly on Thursday.

One of them, Senator Seriake Dickson, expressed disappointment that President Tinubu did not declare an end to the Rivers State emergency rule on Thursday. He likened the current administration in Rivers to a military government because it is headed by a retired military officer.

But Dickson’s statement yesterday drew a sharp response from the Rivers State caucus in the National Assembly.

The legislators questioned the rights of the former Bayelsa State governor to speak on the emergency rule, saying that the state’s Administrator is a retired military officer.

Leader of the caucus, Kingsley Chinda, told reporters that the emergency rule was clearly a matter of necessity aimed at restoring law and order in the state.

He said this was attested to by the suspended governor who recently thanked the President for declaring the state of emergency.

They accused Dickson of deceiving Fubara to make continuous mistakes that allegedly got him suspended.

Chinda asked the Senate Committee on Ethics to immediately commence an investigation into what he called Dickson’s un-parliamentary utterances.

“Let it be categorically stated that Rivers State is not under military rule. The current Administrator of the state, Vice Admiral Retired Ibok-Ete Ibas,  is a retired military officer, just as Senator Seriake Dickson is himself a retired Police Corporal, but a serving senator,” Chinda said.

“Both of them cannot be serving personnel of the Armed Forces. The implication of retirement is clear.  Once an officer retires, he becomes a civilian, and any leadership role he occupies is subject to civilian laws, norms and democratic oversight.

“To label the current administration as military rule is therefore misleading and intellectually disingenuous.

“The declaration of the state of emergency in River State was a necessary constitutional intervention aimed at preserving peace, protecting lives and restoring institutional order.

“The decision was not taken lightly. It was prompted by the rising tide of political instability and executive rascality within the state.

“Also, the disregard for democratic institutions was one of the reasons why we had that declaration.

“This position was also affirmed by the Supreme Court judgment of February 28, 2025, wherein the Supreme Court clearly stated that there was indeed no government in the state the way it was being operated then.

“It is imperative to highlight that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, acted swiftly and decisively to prevent the escalation of violence and systemic breakdown that loomed over our beloved state. The bold step averted a full-blown crisis.

“Without that timely intervention, orchestrated chaos would have overwhelmed the mechanism of governance and civil society in the state.

“The state of emergency declared in Rivers State is not a breach of the constitution. Rather, it is a legitimate tool provided in section 305 of our constitution to restore sanity when democratic structures are under serious threat.

“In fact, only recently, the suspended governor himself, Governor Sim Fubara, publicly thanked Mr. President for saving the day when he declared the state of emergency in River State.

“Therefore, Senator Sereike Dickson, the retired Police Corporal, cannot cry more than the bereaved.

“It is extremely unfortunate that a former governor, a serving senator and a retired police corporal, who by virtue of his police training is supposed to maintain law and order, decided to make undemocratic utterances capable of causing a breakdown of law and order in River State, whilst indigenes of the state are still on the path of seeking for peace for us to ensure that we protect the lives of our people in this state.

“It is on record that Senator Dickson, in one of his numerous visits to the suspended governor, promoted ethnic bigotry and biases that misled the governor and ultimately led to his suspension.

“Senator Dickson is at it again.

“With the antecedent of Senator Dickson, we clearly hold that he is not qualified. He is grossly incompetent and unfit to claim to protect democracy.

“When he had the opportunity as a chief executive, his records are there. They speak for themselves.

“Consequently, the caucus questions Senator Seriake Dickson, the River State caucus, unequivocally and clearly sends a clear caution and warning to Senator Seriake Dickson to stay clear from inciting Rivers people into any form of violence or attempting to cause any breakdown of law and order in our state.

“He is from Bayelsa State. If he wants to cause problem or crisis anywhere, let him go back to his home and do so.

“We will also call on the security agencies to put a tab on him and his actions, which are likely and capable of causing a breach of peace, particularly now that the state is working towards restoring peace amongst our citizens.”

Also speaking, Senator Orwell Onyesor said it was their collective decision to condemn the actions of Senator Dickson, adding that Bayelsa West where Dickson represents needs more of the activism he was exhibiting in Rivers matters

The Nation gathered that Fubara’s supporters called The Simplified Family had made elaborate preparation in expectation of his reinstatement by the President on Thursday.

Many of them were said to have watched the President’s session at the National Assembly on television, waiting eagerly for his pronouncement on Fubara which never came, although he later transmitted communication to the Senate seeking confirmation for some appointments made by Ibas.

President Tinubu in the letter sought confirmation for Ibas’ appointment of members of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC), Rivers State Primary Healthcare Board, Rivers State Civil Service Commission and Rivers State Local Government Civil Service Commission.

The letter was read on the floor of the Senate by Akpabio and was referred to the Ad-hoc Committee on Emergency Rule.

Dickson described the letter read by Akpabio as provocative and wondered why the Senate President could read what he described as an undemocratic document on Democracy Day.

Dickson later on that day delivered his Democracy Day address accusing President Tinubu of missing a golden opportunity to restore democratic rule in Rivers State.

He said that by not mentioning anything about Rivers in his address, Tinubu had displayed undemocratic tendencies.

But some people quickly replied Dickson and reminded him of how he allegedly led thugs to harass and beat up a judge and lawyers including a pregnant lawyer at the Federal High Court in Yenagoa over a case he was interested in.

A member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Timi Agala-Omubo, criticised Dickson’s democracy day sanctimony and recalled how he failed to recognise minority opposition lawmakers in Bayelsa when he was the governor.

He accused Dickson of frustrating the inauguration of three members elected on opposition party platforms.

He wrote: “I admire Senator Henry Seriake Dickson for his dogged disposition to whatever course he believes in, and his courage to speak eloquently without fear.

“However; like most mortals if not all, he also has the two or many sides of man: probating and reprobating, blowing hot and cold depending on the circumstances when it favours him, and when it does not.

“I picked the above part of his video as he bemoans his minority status in the Senate as he claimed to have been ignored by the Senate President.

“The Senator Dickson today is not different from the Governor Dickson who prevented three Assembly members-elect from being inaugurated into the 5th Bayelsa State House of Assembly for several months for no other possible reason than that they were of the minority APGA, Labour, and ADC, and not of his ruling party, PDP.

“He is also not different from the Governor Dickson who in 2019 declared in public that he recognised only the 19 PDP members-elect into the 6th Assembly; and that the other four APC members-elect including myself were unknown to him, and unrecognised.”

Sources told The Nation that Fubara has failed to meet with the pro-Wike state legislators who were also suspended under the emergency rule.

A principal officer of the suspended House of Assembly said: “You’ll recall that he met with his predecessor and Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, who told him to meet with other aggrieved stakeholders.

“He met with President Tinubu after meeting with Wike. But since then till now, the suspended governor has not met with anybody.

“He recently went to see the President in Lagos, but that will not guarantee his coming back. Even if he comes back, remember that the National Assembly has not passed the Rivers Budget.

“This means that the House of Assembly will also come back and the National Assembly will return the budget to the state Assembly and the crisis will continue.

“As we speak, Fubara has not even met with those he himself called the three wise men. These men, OCJ Okocha, Sargent Awuse and Ferdinand Alabraba, were instrumental to his election.

“So, no reconciliation has taken place”.

A former Local Government Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Dr Chidi Lloyd, said there was nothing exciting about Fubara returning to office without reconciliation.

Lloyd said there has been no reconciliatory meeting between Fubara and the state legislators.

He insisted that Fubara was playing the ostrich.

“What is the hullabaloo about his coming back? He has been told many times to go and make peace. Assuming he comes back, has the problem with the House Assembly been resolved?

“The lawmakers will throw him out because there is nothing like the Chief Judge setting up any panel. The Supreme Court has already itemised all his sins.

“I am bothered about governance in Rivers. Others have moved on. See what is happening in Enugu and Delta states. That is our priority.

“Fubara is playing the ostrich. Going to see the President and taking photograph, does it stop the problem?

A former President of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide has been courageously advising Fubara to show leadership in the reconciliation by driving the process.

He said it would be dangerous for Fubara to return to office without first dispensing with the reconciliation process.

He recalled that he had earlier advised Fubara to deepen the reconciliation after his first meeting with Wike.

Fubara first visited Wike last April to seek reconciliation.

He also met with the President and told his supporters that the President meant well in declaring the state of emergency in Rivers.

The situation, according to him, saved the state from chaos.

  • Keyamo orders probe of Air Peace/Oshiomhole face-off

Keyamo orders probe of Air Peace/Oshiomhole face-off

    • Release footage of incident, AON challenges FAAN

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has directed aviation agencies to investigate the incident involving Senator Adams Oshiomhole and officials of Air Peace Airline at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

A row broke out on Wednesday at the domestic wing of the Airport Terminal 1 in Lagos between Sen. Oshiomhole and Air Peace Airline officials  who alleged that the Senator arrived after the boarding process had ended, and the plane departed.

Senator Oshiomhole on the other hand  alleged that he and other passengers were victims of sharp practices by the airline staff members who redirected their tickets to other passengers at higher rates.

He denied barricading the terminal, disrupting flight operations or being unruly as alleged by the airline.

Oshiomhole said he only decided to fight for Nigerians who were being ‘extorted’ by the airline under the pretext of coming late.

Reacting to the development yesterday via a post on his official X handle @fkeyamo, the Keyamo directed aviation agencies to thoroughly probe the issues and revert to his office.

He noted that the investigation would enable the sector to deal with the issue in such a way as to guide future conducts in similar situations.

The minister, however, did not give a timeline for the conclusion of the investigation

The post reads: “In the wake of the incident at the Lagos Airport last Wednesday involving AIRPEACE Airline and His Excellency, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, I have been in direct contact with both parties since that morning.

“I also directed the aviation agencies to exercise restraint in jumping to conclusions in line with the time-honoured legal principle of ‘hear all sides’ before reaching judgment.

“Whilst appealing to both sides to halt the public accusations and counter-accusations, I am further directing the relevant aviation agencies to thoroughly look into the issue, collect all available evidence and revert to my office so we can deal with the issue in such a way as to guide future conducts in similar situations.”

Meanwhile the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), has challenged  the Aviation Security Personnel attached to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), to release the video footage of the incident.  The spokesperson  of the umbrella body of indigenous carriers, Professor Obiora Okonkwo  stated this yesterday while responding to questions on the action proposed by the body on the recent fracas between the former Edo State governor and Air Peace staff on the circumstances leading to the drama at the airport.

Okonkwo said the details of such video footage would go a long way in establishing the veracity of the claims by the former governor  that he did not disrupt the operations of Air Peace or other carriers on the day of the incident at the airport.

The AON spokesperson said the refusal / delay by FAAN, which personnel are in charge of security at the airport to produce such evidence, will go a long way in attempting to cover up alleged unauthorised conduct by passengers.

He said from the investigations so far carried out by AON, it is clear that the affected airline did not set out to deny the prominent politician access into the aircraft, but that the laid down procedures for check – in protocols were not fully complied with.

Okonkwo called on passengers to assist airlines in meeting up with on – time departure by coming to the airport early , as the intense logistics involved in flight operations requires compliance with the rules of carriage.

He said though the fracas is being resolved politically, there is need for aviation authorities to mount a serious campaign against unruly passenger behaviour, which has led to destruction of airline equipment and other infractions at the airport.

Also condemning the incident, the South South Zonal Organizing Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Blessing Agbomhere, called on the aviation minister to direct the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to urgently investigate the faceoff in order to save Nigeria’s local air services from being turned into a bastion of inefficiency and corruption.

He also called on the NCAA to wake up from its long slumber, saying the world has gone beyond Nigeria’s poorly regulated airline industry which gives local operators the leeway to delay, cancel and round trip tickets purchased by unsuspecting customers, thereby denying them the opportunity to travel on schedule, without any sort of sanction on erring

    Airlines by the regulator.

Agbomhere made the call in a statement released in Abuja, in reaction to the incident.

  • Tinubu, Oborevwori, Mbah,  others  celebrate ‘Uncle Sam’ at 90

Tinubu, Oborevwori, Mbah,  others  celebrate ‘Uncle Sam’ at 90

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, describing him as “a doyen of journalism” and “an elder statesman whose influence transcends the newsroom.”

In a tribute to the media icon he released yesterday, President Tinubu lauded Amuka-Pemu—fondly known as Uncle Sam—for his outstanding contributions to journalism and national development over the decades.

“Today, I celebrate Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on his 90th birthday. Uncle Sam remains a shining example of dedication, resilience and integrity within the media industry,” President Tinubu stated.

Tracing the media veteran’s illustrious career, the President highlighted Amuka-Pemu’s early days at Daily Times, his co-founding of The Punch alongside the late Chief Olu Aboderin, and his eventual establishment of Vanguard in 1984—now one of the country’s most influential newspapers.

“Mr. Amuka-Pemu has devoted most of his life to journalism. It is to his credit and managerial acumen that Vanguard is alive today, 41 years after its founding, despite the crisis in the media industry,” the President remarked.

Describing the 90-year-old as not only a pillar of Nigerian journalism but also a respected leader in his home state of Delta and across the South-South region, President Tinubu said Amuka-Pemu’s influence extended far beyond the pages of his newspaper.

“Today, he is not just a leader of the profession; he is a doyen. His leadership, from the altar of journalism, has influenced the media landscape and extended to his role as a respected leader in Delta State and the South-South geopolitical zone, making him an elder statesman,” the President said.

The President also noted that in recognition of his enduring contributions, Amuka-Pemu was among the distinguished Nigerians recently honoured at the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, where he was conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

“I urge younger journalists to emulate this highly respected publisher and leader. I wish Uncle Sam continued God’s grace and more years of impact. Our country is deeply grateful for his invaluable contributions to journalism and his enduring legacy”, the President added.

Also eulogizing the iconic publisher,  Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, in Asaba, praised Amuka-Pemu, a distinguished son and leader from Delta State, for his remarkable contributions to the media industry and nation-building.

The governor lauded Amuka-Pemu’s unwavering commitment to ethical journalism, his consistent fight against corruption, and his strong advocacy for good governance and the rule of law.

His words: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Sam Amuka-Pemu, our father, leader, and esteemed statesman on his 90th birthday, on behalf of my family, the government, and the good people of Delta State.

“Uncle Sam, as he is fondly called, has made a lasting and significant contribution to the Nigerian press, evident in the growth of Vanguard  Newspapers and his principled stance on issues of law, good governance, and anti-corruption.

“We owe you a debt of gratitude for your lifelong dedication to transforming journalism in Nigeria through sharp editorials, factual reporting, and impartial coverage.

“It gives me great joy to join your family, friends, and well-wishers in thanking Almighty God for His steadfast provision, protection, and guidance throughout your remarkable 90 years.”

Oborevwori’s counterpart,  Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State , in a congratulatory message to Amuka on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle @PNMbah yesterday, said the nonagenarian represented the best of Nigeria’s media industry.

He also hailed the veteran journalist on the conferment on him of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON, by President Bola Tinubu, describing it as a fitting tribute to a man who had given his all to his chosen career and nation building.

“I congratulate a man who many call Sad Sam, but who in reality dedicated himself to drawing away sadness from men.  Through his years as a newspaper columnist, he navigated life issues with a biting sarcasm that confounded perpetrators of evil and brought comfort to others.

“I celebrate an icon and a perfect gentleman, who is not only a media giant, but has also nurtured giants through his mentorship.

“His establishment of Vanguard with a motto of better life for the people was for him a continuation of using the media space to enthrone good.

“For a man, who refuses to celebrate himself despite the opportunities available to him, it is only proper that those who he has positively affected have chosen the occasion of his 90th birthday to celebrate his positive passion for mankind,” he stated.

Concluding, he said, “Amuka is indeed worthy of the national honour for his immense contributions to national development and the positive influence he has had in shaping minds through the power of the press.

“I enjoin younger journalists to draw lessons of integrity, resilience, and service from his life.

“It is in this light that I wish Uncle Sam a happy birthday and also many more years of good health and continued impact.”

Former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, in a goodwill message, lauded Amuka’s monumental contributions to the journalism profession and to Nigeria’s socio-political development. He noted that both the media industry and the nation owe Amuka a debt of gratitude for his lifelong dedication and service.

Reflecting on Amuka’s illustrious career, Mark highlighted his influential column in the defunct Daily Times of Nigeria, which he said played a significant role in shaping national discourse and guiding the country’s development, even before the founding of Vanguard newspapers.

Senator Mark urged Amuka to continue to share his vast experience and wisdom in leadership and journalism with the younger generation, noting that his legacy remains a valuable resource.

He prayed for God’s continued grace upon Amuka’s life, wishing him good health, peace, and enduring wisdom in the years to come.

Uncle Sam’s constituents, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, described his  birthday as a testament to his enduring wisdom, legacy, and commitment to the journalism profession.

The Guild explained that as the founder of Vanguard Newspapers Group, has played a pivotal role in shaping the media landscape.

According to editors, “Uncle Sam’s commitment to excellence and robust journalism has inspired generations of journalists and media audiences alike.

“Under your guidance, Vanguard Newspaper has become a beacon of truth, reliability, and excellence.

“Your unwavering commitment to journalistic ethics has earned the respect and admiration of your peers, government, and readers. “

The Guild noted that Prince Amuka-Pemu’s contributions extend beyond journalism, citing his efforts to promote social justice, education, and civic engagement in Sapele and the Niger-Delta region, through his media platform.

“As we celebrate your 90th birthday, we honor not only your achievements but also your life. Your legacy will continue to inspire and motivate us and future generations,” the Guild said.

The Guild wished Prince Amuka-Pemu a happy 90th birthday, filled with joy, love, and celebration, and prayed for his continued good health, happiness, and fulfillment.

  • ‘How I became lone survivor of plane crash that claimed 246 lives’

‘How I became lone survivor of plane crash that claimed 246 lives’

Vishwaskumar Ramesh, the only survivor of the United Kingdom bound Air India plane that crashed after take-off from Ahmedabad, India and left all 241 other passengers and crew dead, has expressed shock at his survival, saying “I thought I would die”.

Recovering from the hospital a day after the tragedy that claimed five other lives on the ground, Ramesh said in an exclusive interview with NDTV yesterday: “Everything happened in front of my eyes. I thought I would die.

“The side where I was seated fell into the ground floor of the building. There was some space. When the door broke, I saw that space and I just jumped out.

“The door must’ve broken on impact.

“There was a wall on the opposite side, but near me, it was open. I ran.

“I don’t know how. I don’t know how I came out of it alive.

“For a while, I thought I was about to die. But when I opened my eyes, I saw I was alive, and I opened my seat belt and got out of there. The airhostess … died before my eyes.”

The Air India airliner carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members was en route to the United Kingdom and crashed into a building shortly after takeoff on Thursday, leaving 246 dead, officials said.

The victims include 241 passengers and crew members as well as five medical students who were inside the medical college and hospital the aircraft crashed into, according to hospital officials.

Many others inside the building were injured — some seriously — and are receiving treatment, hospital officials said.

Ramesh’s brother, Nayankumar Ramesh, said it is a “miracle” his brother survived.

He said: “Our plane’s crashed. I don’t know where my brother is. I don’t see any other passengers. I don’t know how I’m alive, how I exited the plane,” Nayankumar Ramesh told ABC News about his brother’s escape from the plane.

“Just hearing about the crash, I’m scared to fly now, to even stay on a plane now.”

The plane, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed in the Meghaninagar area near Ahmedabad airport, in India’s Gujarat state, the city’s Police Commissioner G.S. Malik said Thursday.

Boeing’s Dreamliner planes had not previously been involved in an incident where passenger fatalities were reported. This plane had more than 41,000 hours of flying time, which is considered average for this aircraft, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics firm.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of the passengers and crew on board Air India Flight 171, as well as everyone affected in Ahmedabad.

“I have spoken with Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran to offer our full support, and a Boeing team stands ready to support the investigation led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau,” Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg said in a statement.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement that he’d been in touch with local officials after the crash.

“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us,” he said in a statement on social media. “It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it.”

    Survivor shares shocking account

Ramesh, who lives in London with his wife and child, is being treated at a hospital in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad, where he told doctors that immediately after the plane took off, it began descending and suddenly split in two.

Dr. Dhaval Gameti, who examined him, told the Associated Press that he was disoriented with “multiple injuries all over his body”, but that he “seems to be out of danger.”

Speaking to Indian broadcaster Doordarshan, Ramesh recounted his horrific ordeal, and spoke of how he witnessed two air hostesses die “in front of my eyes”.

He said: “I don’t know how I came out of it alive,” he said from his hospital bed.

“For a while, I thought I was about to die. But when I opened my eyes, I saw I was alive. And I opened my seatbelt and got out of there.”

His seat was placed right next to the emergency door, which he says came off when the plane hit the ground.

“The side where I was seated fell into the ground floor of the building,” Ramesh recalled.

“There was some space. When the door broke, I saw that space and I just jumped out.

‘The door must’ve broken on impact.

“There was a wall on the opposite side, but near me, it was open. I ran. I don’t know how.”

When the plane hit the ground yesterday, seat 11A, where Ramesh was sat, collapsed into the ground floor of the building, instead of the upper levels where the jet’s main body was badly destroyed.

Ramesh also described how just moments after take-off, it “felt like the plane had got stuck”.

He recalled how the pilots tried to raise the jet, but it “went full speed and crashed into the building”.

Ramesh explained how the plane quickly caught fire following the crash, saying that he burnt his arm.

Astonishing footage taken near the crash site yesterday showed Ramesh with visible injuries hobbling away from the jet before he was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Ramesh, whose brother was also on the flight and is presumed dead, described yesterday how he heard “a loud noise” before the plane crashed.

“When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran.

“There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.”

India’s prime minister met the plane crash survivor yesterday, as well as those who were injured on the ground.

India’s leader was also pictured visiting the site of the crash.

“We are all devastated by the air tragedy in Ahmedabad. The loss of so many lives in such a sudden and heartbreaking manner is beyond words,” Modi said on social media after his visit.

“We understand their pain and also know that the void left behind will be felt for years to come.”

The Indian government has launched an investigation into the fatal crash of the London-bound plane.

Officials said most of the bodies were charred beyond recognition.

There was no news yesterday on the cause of the crash or on efforts to retrieve the black boxes – the flight data and cockpit voice recorders – as authorities continued to search the crash site.

The plane hit a building housing medical students and burst into flames, killing several college students on the ground.

Shocking images and videos showed how black smoke billowed from the site where the plane crashed near the airport in Ahmedabad, a city of more than five million and the capital of Gujarat.

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has initiated a probe into the disaster in line with global protocols set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, said Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu in a statement on social media.

A team from the United States is expected to arrive in India to help. The National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation Administration, Boeing and General Electric are all sending experts.

Medics are conducting DNA tests to identify those killed, the national president of the Federation of All India Medical Association, Akshay Dongardiv, said.

Meanwhile, grieving families gathered outside the civil hospital in Ahmedabad yesterday.
