The federal government plans to roll out advanced technology in its bid to reclaim territories, particularly forests, from terrorists and bandits across the country, President Bola Tinubu has said.

A coordinated response by all tiers of government to the menace of the gunmen is evolving, he said during a state dinner hosted in his honour at the Government House in Katsina on Friday night.

According to him, enhanced surveillance and security technologies will be deployed to neutralise threats in rural and forested regions across the country.

He emphasised that the persistent insecurity in parts of the country, particularly the Northwest, was not just a local or regional matter but a national concern that required a united front involving federal, state and local governments.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, quoted him as saying technological solutions would play a key role in dismantling criminal strongholds and restoring confidence among investors.

He described insecurity as one of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges, noting that without addressing it comprehensively, economic growth and foreign investment would remain elusive.

The President explained that banditry and terrorism have created an atmosphere of fear that deters local and international investors.

He had earlier on Friday addressed troops and personnel of the armed forces deployed in the fight against terrorism in Katsina, assuring them of full government’s support in carrying out the assignment.

Katsina is one of the states most affected by rural insecurity which has claimed many lives and forced thousands off their farms and homes.

He particularly took note of comments by a former governor of the state, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari, on the security situation, and said: “Yes, I agree that security is a challenge for the country.

“I addressed the men and women of the armed forces earlier today and assured them that we will do everything to fight terrorism and banditry.

“We will invest more in technology and take over the forests. Security is a national issue, not just at the local or regional levels. If we genuinely need investment in Nigeria, we must address security.

“Investment is cowardly, and it will not go where there is banditry and terrorism. We will solve the problem together with the states and local councils,” he said.

President Tinubu said encouraging signs of Nigeria’s economic recovery were beginning to manifest.

He credited bold policy decisions taken by his administration for this development.

The President said the federal government would consider upgrading the Katsina airport with a view to creating jobs and expanding the economy.

He also pledged that victims of terrorism would receive support to enable them pick up their lives.

The President thanked Aminu Bello Masari for his role in ensuring that he got the endorsement of the North West and emerged as the APC presidential candidate.

He also thanked the governors who honoured the invitation of the Katsina State Governor Radda for the commissioning of projects and his daughter’s wedding.

The governors were those of Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Benue, Yobe, Sokoto, and Kwara states.

President Tinubu acknowledged the leadership roles of Katsina indigenes in the country and described President Muhammadu Buhari as a man of integrity who contributed significantly to Nigeria’s development.

“I wish him well,” he said.

In his remarks, Governor Dikko Radda said the state had established a security outfit that gathers and supplies intelligence.

He said the proposed airport expansion, including the cargo terminal, customer terminal and fire truck, would create 2,700 direct jobs and cost N54 billion.

Former Governor Masari thanked the President for appointing two ministers from the state to the Federal Executive Council.

Masari also thanked the President for appointing Katsina indigenes as special advisers, chairmen of boards and heads of regulatory agencies such as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

On why he supported the President’s ambition to contest the 2023 elections, he said:

“You have the political will and courage to face the challenges of this country.

“You know the problem with humans: There will be resistance when new changes and a new social order are coming. And if you are not strong enough and determined, you will succumb, and the problem continues.

“But leadership is not about when it is all well. The hard way is the best. You know leaders during hard times.

“I know and believe you can do it. You have the courage.”

Masari said the insecurity in the North West must be tackled holistically from the bottom up.

Army in ‘fierce battle’ against ISWAP in Yobe

The Nigerian Army yesterday said its men were locked in what it called a fierce battle against Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Yobe State.

“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI currently in a fierce battle against ISWAP attack at Buni Gari, Yobe State. Details later,” the Army said on its official X handle.

Benue may defy House of Representatives over summons

The House of Representatives’ invitation to the Benue State House of Assembly over the prevailing insecurity in the state may be ignored by the state legislature, The Nation gathered yesterday.

A similar invitation was extended to Zamfara State House of Assembly and the governors of the two states by the HoR to appear before it on Thursday, May 8.

This is sequel to a petition filed with the HoR by Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law.

The Head of Media, House Committee on Public Petitions, Chooks Oko, said on Friday that the invited executive and legislative arms of the two states are expected to explain why their constitutional functions should not be taken over by the House of Representatives because of the security situation.

There has been no official reaction from the governors and the local assemblies, and efforts to get officials to respond to the invitation in Benue State were unsuccessful.

The Benue State House of Assembly declined to honour a similar invitation by the Senate earlier in the year over the “purported removal of the Chief Judge” of the state by the assembly.

In a March 5, 2025 letter to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary on the matter, Speaker Aondona Dajoh said while the assembly has ‘utmost respect’ for the Senate’s commitment to judicial independence, constitutionalism and due process, the Red Chamber lacks power of “direct supervisory or oversight authority over State Houses of Assembly in matters that are exclusively within their jurisdiction.”

Dajoh added: “We recognise the Senate’s Committee’s commitment to upholding democratic tenets. We reiterate that any resolution on this matter must be guided by constitutional jurisdictional boundaries and the necessity of respecting federal-state legislative autonomy.”

Alleged N8b deals: Aisha Achimugu yet to meet EFCC’s bail conditions

Detained businesswoman Aisha Achimugu is yet to meet the bail conditions set by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) because her two sureties have no landed property in Abuja.

Aisha was still in custody at the weekend over alleged N8.71billion oil bloc transactions.

The EFCC will on Monday verify the claims of new two sureties.

A top EFCC source said: “Aisha is still in detention until she meets the bail conditions.

“The court mandated the EFCC to set bail conditions.  We asked her to bring two sureties with landed property in Abuja.  Her sureties could not meet our terms.

“She produced new sureties on Friday. We will verify the claims of those standing for her on Monday.

“If these sureties do not fulfill the required conditions, she will remain with us.”

She, however, will account for how she came about 136 bank accounts, especially corporate types.

Mrs. Achimugu was declared wanted by the EFCC in March 2025 on allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

According to an affidavit by an EFCC investigator, Nr. Chris Odofin, Mrs. Achimugu was under investigation for alleged conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, money laundering, corruption, and possession of property reasonably suspected to have been acquired through unlawful means

The affidavit also showed the applicant operates a total of 136 bank accounts across 10 different banks, both personal and corporate.

Achimugu, in her statement according to the affidavit, said the inflow of N8.71 billion into her corporate bank accounts was an ”investment fund” for acquisition of an oil bloc.

She said the cash was transferred to the Federal Government’s account through her company, Oceangate Engineering Oil and Gas Limited, referencing documentation from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

But findings by the EFCC confirmed that Achimugu’s company actually acquired two oil blocs, Shallow Water PPL 3007 and Deep Offshore PPL 302-DO at the cost of $25.3 million.

The payments were allegedly made through bureau de change operators.

The EFCC was looking at clues on the likely sources of the funds.

The commission also alleged that the acquisition of the oil blocs was not transparent enough.

  • FULL LIST: Countries that offer Nigerians five-year multiple entry visa

FULL LIST: Countries that offer Nigerians five-year multiple entry visa

Nigerian passport holders seeking long-term access to foreign countries for business, tourism, or family visits can now benefit from more liberal visa policies offered by several nations.

Some countries grant Nigerians a five-year multiple entry visa, allowing holders to enter and exit the destination several times without applying for a new visa for each trip.

These long-duration visas significantly ease the burden of frequent travel, reduce costs, and enhance convenience, especially for business professionals and diaspora families.

Frequent travelers, business professionals, and individuals with consistent international travel history are generally more likely to qualify for long-term visas.

Here is a list of countries that offer Nigerians a five-year multiple entry visa.

    1. United States of America (USA)
The U.S. offers a B1/B2 visa, which covers business and tourism, with a validity of five years for eligible Nigerians. It allows multiple entries, and applicants must apply through the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. An in-person interview is usually required, and approval depends on the travel history, financial status, and purpose of travel.

    2. United Kingdom
The UK offers a Standard Visitor Visa with long-term options of two, five, or ten years. Nigerians can apply for the five-year version, which allows multiple entries but limits each stay to six months. Applications are submitted online through the UK government portal, and approval requires evidence of a genuine travel purpose, financial means, and intent to return to Nigeria.

    3. Schengen Countries (Europe)
Several Schengen countries, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain, grant Nigerians five-year multiple entry visas under the Schengen Visa Code. These are C-Type short-stay visas that allow stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen zone. While not automatically granted, applicants with previous Schengen visas, clean travel records, and valid reasons for frequent visits may be approved for the five-year validity.

    4. South Africa
South Africa offers multiple entry visas valid for up to five years for Nigerians who frequently travel for business or official duties. Applicants must apply through the South African High Commission and provide documentation such as invitation letters, proof of business activities, or travel history to justify the long-term access.

    5. India
India provides up to five-year visas for tourism or business purposes to eligible Nigerians. The visa permits multiple entries and is issued based on a solid travel record, financial capability, and a clearly stated reason for travel. Applications are submitted online through the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC).

    6. Kenya
While Kenya’s standard eVisa is short-term, it issues long-term multiple-entry visas, including five-year options, upon request and proper justification. These are often given to frequent travelers, business people, or those with family or project commitments in the country. Applications can be made through the Kenyan eVisa portal or directly through immigration services.

    7. United Arab Emirates (UAE)
The UAE offers a five-year tourist visa to Nigerians who meet specific requirements. This visa allows multiple entries and stays of up to 90 days each, extendable to 180 days per year. Applicants must show proof of financial means, previous travel history, and a valid reason for seeking long-term access. Applications are typically handled online or through approved agents.

Let your results speak for you, Tinubu urges Governors

President Bola Tinubu has called on the 36 Governors to focus on delivering tangible results to their people, asserting that performance, not popularity, is the true test of leadership.

Speaking during a two-day working visit to Katsina State, the President charged Governors to “let the people be at the heart of your programmes,” while dismissing distractions from what he termed “armchair critics.”

“Your hard work and concrete achievements will answer any criticism. Ignore distractions — your results will speak for you,” Tinubu stated at the commissioning of major infrastructure projects.

Among the projects unveiled during the visit was the 24-kilometre Eastern Bypass Road, which stretches from Dutsin-ma Road through Kano and Daura Roads to Yandaki in Kaita Local Government Area. The project was completed in just 18 months under the administration of Governor Dikko Radda.

Tinubu also inaugurated the Katsina Agricultural Mechanised Centre, a key initiative aimed at boosting farming productivity and transforming agriculture in the state.

Commending Governor Radda’s performance across sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and infrastructure, Tinubu said, “Significant progress has been made in less than two years.”

The President acknowledged the insecurity challenges facing the region but praised the Katsina governor’s courage and resilience. “We have decided for peace and stability. I know you face terrorism and banditry attacks in the state, but you have shown determination and courage to move Katsina State forward. You will not walk alone. The Federal Government will be with you,” he assured.

Tinubu emphasised that hunger and poverty remain the most urgent threats to national stability, underscoring his administration’s commitment to agricultural development. “The economy is sailing in the right trajectory. We are witnessing an effort to banish hunger. Small and large-scale farming will be encouraged. Once we liberate ourselves from hunger, we will appreciate peace and harmony,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of adopting modern methods, the President stated: “The old style of agriculture is gone. We must invest in mechanisation and water management. Agriculture is the heart of our progress and must be for all.”

He also revealed plans to revive the Bank of Agriculture to provide accessible financing for farmers across Nigeria. “The Bank of Agriculture is being revitalised. When resuscitated, the bank will make funds available for large, medium and small-scale farming,” he said.

Calling on other States to follow Katsina’s lead, Tinubu noted: “You have introduced a great, progressive movement in Katsina State by just tilling the land and putting it to use. Farming will be our source of prosperity and growth. We must remove ourselves from reliance on oil and commit to agriculture.”

He concluded his visit by thanking former governors Ibrahim Shema and Aminu Bello Masari, along with other political leaders in the state, for their warm reception and continued contributions.

“Thank you for the great honour you have given me. Your coming to the airport to receive me made me feel so welcome. I am your son, and I am one of you. This is homecoming, and Katsina is home — home to progress, development, and freedom for good,” Tinubu said.

Fubara returns to Rivers after Germany vacations

Suspended Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has returned to the State after a two-week vacation overseas.

It was gathered that Fubara touched down at the international wing of the Port Harcourt Airport, Omagwa, around 7pm.

A viral video showed the Governor at the airport being received by some aides.

The suspended Governor was escorted to a waiting Sports Utility Vehicle, which immediately zoomed off.

During his vacation, Fubara was said to have held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in London when he was outside the country.

But before he travelled, Fubara was said to have met with his estranged predecessor and benefactor, Chief Nyesom Wike.

Sources privy to the meeting said the peace meeting between Wike and Fubara was brokered by two Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a former Governor from the West.

President Tinubu suspended Fubara, his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu and members of the Assembly when he declared a state of emergency following protracted political conflict in the state.

    • Tinubu, target of fight against Akpabio, says Duru

    • Alleges senator offered her N200m to accuse Senate President of organ harvesting

    • Natasha: Duru’s allegations unfounded, voice effects untrue

An activist, Dr. Sandra Duru, has claimed that the sexual allegation brought against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was targeted at preventing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from being re-elected for a second term.

This is even as Duru, also known as Professor Mgbeke, said she had submitted evidence of phone conversations between her and the suspended Kogi Central Senator to relevant authorities in the United States and other parts of the world for forensic analysis.

But in a swift response yesterday, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described Duru’s allegations against her as unfounded.

She also disowned the voice effects used in a livestreamed video Duru posted on Facebook, saying they are false.

Duru, an activist based in the United States, who made her claims in a Facebook live broadcast session on Thursday night, had also alleged that Akpoti-Uduaghan also offered her N200 million to accuse the Senate President of organ harvesting in order to link him with the death of a young girl who died a few years ago, as she was not getting anywhere with her sexual harassment allegation.

She called on international security agencies, which she claimed she had petitioned, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Nigeria Police Force to probe Natasha’s false allegations and what she claimed to know about the murder of Umoren, having kept mute for years before allegedly attempting to hang the death on Akpabio.

The activist said: “The Nigeria Police should handle the case of Natasha and her false allegations.

“She said she wants to force the Senate President to step down so that they will have their way to remove what they call Yoruba government.

“Umoren died in 2021. Autopsy was done and there was no organ harvesting.

“I already wrote the international agencies about a senator that claimed to have known something about the murder of a young lady and she kept it to herself.

“She must explain what she knows about the death.

“She said the reason for the fight was not really about the Senate President but about the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that they don’t want Yoruba government to go beyond four years.

“She said no sexual harassment evidence of any kind,” Duru said.

According to her, during one of their conversations, Akpoti-Uduaghan allegedly revealed that she had been promised the governorship of Kogi State or Minister of Petroleum Resources if she could accomplish the mission of getting the Senate President out.

While displaying some of the evidence, she said the conversations revealed the lies behind the sexual harassment allegation levelled against Senate President Akpabio by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

She exposed call logs and conversations to counteract  Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claim that she had never spoken to her before.

The activist and journalist, in the one hour eight minutes live broadcast, alleged that Akpoti-Uduaghan was out to destroy men, insisting that the suspended Senator had revealed she had no evidence of harassment against Akpabio.

She displayed call logs and messages sent to her Whatsapp by Natasha.

“One, there is no sexual harassment of any kind. Two, there is no evidence of organ harvesting. I told Natasha, you are a pathological liar, you have disgraced us Nigerians.

“She said Nigerians were G and H (gullible and hungry), and you want to add to their problems?

“I told her to make peace with the Senate members but she insisted that they want to destroy Yoruba government. I don’t know what she meant by that.

“A lawyer that is very lousy and careless in her utterances. Natasha is not teachable, Natasha lacks humility. Natasha lacks moral values. She does not care. If it doesn’t go Natasha’s way, you are her enemy.

“Natasha is on a mission to destroy men… I cannot watch her destroy our men, I cannot watch her destroy our sons, I cannot watch her destroy our girls who are following her blindly.

“She called Dr Oby Ezekwesili a ‘useful idiot’,” Duru claimed.

Natasha to Duru: Your allegations unfounded, voice effect untrue

The suspended Kogi Central Senator, however, described Duru’s allegations against her as unfounded.

She also disowned the voice effects used in a livestreamed video Duru posted on Facebook, saying they are false.

In a statement she issued yesterday, Akpoti-Uduaghan said she would in due course respond to the allegations made in the Facebook post against her.

She said: “I have carefully watched a livestream which was done by one Sandra C Duru on facebook, on May 1st, 2025.

“The content of the livestream including the voice effect credited to me are entirely untrue, and most manipulated to serve Sandra Duru’s ulterior motive of playing the script of Senator Godswill Akpabio.

“To the best of my knowledge, those words used are false and did not emanate from the natural cause of any contact involving me.

“It was from recent research that I also found out that the person who now represents herself as Sandra Duru is the same person who operated as Prof. Mgbeke on Facebook.

“In the nearest of time, I will respond to the unfounded allegations made therein.”

Tinubu to saboteurs: Nigeria will not bow to fear, terror

    • President joins armed forces on frontline in Katsina

    • Says local, foreign saboteurs will be defeated

    • Reiterates support for troops’ welfare, logistics

President Bola Tinubu yesterday stormed the frontline to motivate soldiers currently locked in battle against terrorism in parts of the country.

Tinubu personally met with the troops stationed in Katsina, one of the states worst hit by terrorism, and warned those pushing to destabilise Nigeria that the country “will not bow—not to fear, not to terror, and not to treachery.”

There has been a surge lately in terrorist attacks and violence, particularly in Plateau and Benue states, which left scores dead and thousands displaced.

Tinubu, speaking on day one of his visit to Katsina to personally assess the security situation there, declared that enemies of Nigeria, be they “domestic collaborators or foreign agents,” would not succeed in breaking the nation’s resolve.

“To those who seek to destabilise our nation, be they domestic collaborators or foreign agents—hear this: Nigeria will not bow. Not to fear. Not to terror. Not to treachery,” the President said.

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, recently blamed foreign mercenaries for repeated attacks on his state, echoing a growing concern about the transnational dimension of insecurity in the region.

Tinubu described the Armed Forces as the “shield of Nigeria” and hailed their sacrifices in the face of persistent threats.

He said: “You are the brave sons and daughters who stand between our people and the forces of terror. Every inch of ground you hold, every terrorist you neutralize and every community you secure is a victory for justice, freedom and the future of our children.

“Your resilience in the face of danger inspires the entire nation. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed.

“You have left behind your families and the comforts of civilian life to wear the uniform of honour and duty. You face danger not for wealth or recognition, but for the love of our dear country.

“That, my brothers and sisters in uniform, is the highest form of patriotism. You are the silent guardians of our democracy, and I salute you.”

The President emphasised that the battle against insecurity was not merely a territorial contest but “a battle for the soul of Nigeria.”

He acknowledged the military’s resilience and called their patriotism “the highest form,” lauding their commitment to serve without expectation of material reward.

“My dear soldiers, this is a defining moment in our history. The threats of terrorism, banditry and insurgency have persisted for too long.

“Nigerians are counting on us and on you to end this menace and reclaim every inch of our territory,” Tinubu charged.

He assured the troops that their welfare remained a top priority for his administration.

He spoke of plans to improve their housing, healthcare, insurance coverage, family support and prompt payment of allowances.

“We are taking bold steps to equip you with advanced equipment, superior intelligence and robust logistical support not only to defend this nation but to dominate and defeat every adversary,” Tinubu said.

With growing pressure on the government to curb attacks in states like Plateau, Benue, and Borno—where bandits and insurgents have targeted rural populations—the President’s visit underscores the administration’s intent to reinvigorate the military campaign against insecurity.

Tinubu also rallied the troops with a call to action, asking, “Let me hear you loudly: Are you ready? Are you committed to ending this insecurity once and for all? Let your resolve echo through every valley and forest.”

The President reaffirmed his unwavering support for the Armed Forces, promising to match their courage with investment and leadership.

His words: “You, the Nigerian military, are the spearhead of this fight. With your valour and discipline, peace shall prevail.

“Let the enemies of Nigeria know their time is up.

“As your President, I will match your courage with action, investment and unwavering support.

“Stand tall. Be proud. Nigeria depends on you, and I am with you—today, tomorrow and always.

    FG’ll complete Kano-Maradi 284km rail project by 2026

Also yesterday, President Tinubu promised that the Federal Government would complete the 284 kilometre Kano-Jigawa-Katsina-Maradi rail project by next year.

He spoke during the inauguration of the Katsina State Agricultural Mechanisation Centre and a 24-kilometre Eastern Bypass.

He said that the Kano-Jigawa-Katsina-Maradi rail project, when completed, would “ease the transportation of persons and goods, thereby relieving the pressure on our roads.”

Tinubu also said that the government has awarded contract for the total rehabilitation of the Marabar Kankara-Dutsinma-Katsina Road.

Contract in respect of the construction of Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi-Dayi-Gidan Mutumdaya Road has similarly been awarded.

“We are determined to deliver these roads on schedule,” the President vowed.

He also assured the people of the state that the Federal Government would complete the remaining second phase of Katsina-Kano Road.

“We have resolved the previous technical and bureaucratic challenges, work is ongoing,” Tinubu said.

The President commended Gov. Dikko Radda for the giant strides in the agriculture and infrastructure development in the state.

Radda thanked the Federal Government for providing over 6,000 water pump machines to irrigation farmers.

He said that the state had spent over N2 billion on the purchase of 448,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser for farmers in 2024.

Radda added that the government would on Monday launch the distribution of about 400,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser to farmers for 2025.

He also said that the government had increased the number of extension workers from 72 to over 778.

Troops neutralise five bandits’ leaders in Zamfara

Simultaneously, the Nigerian Army announced that troops of One Brigade, Gusau, Zamfara State neutralised five bandits’ leaders in the state.

The  Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations,1 Brigade, Gusau, Capt. Suleiman Omale named the killed bandits as Auta Jijji, Dankali, Sagidi, Kachallah Rijaji, and Kachallah Suza.

Weapons were recovered from them, he said.

He said: “The troops under the command of Brig-Gen. Timothy Opurum, has recorded a major operational success in its ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry in Talata Mafara and Kaura Namoda local government areas of Zamfara.

“In the early hours of Thursday, May 1, the troops of Combat Team 6 (CT 6) on a fighting patrol encountered a large number of armed terrorists who had infiltrated Mai Kwanugga village in Talata Mafara LGA.

“The terrorists have been attacking locals and setting houses ablaze before the arrival of troops.

“Upon contact, the troops decisively engaged the criminals in a fierce gun duel, successfully neutralizing several terrorists, including five notorious bandits’ leaders.

“Reinforcements from 1 Brigade Quick Response Force (QRF) and 1 Brigade Special Forces (1 BSF) pursued the fleeing terrorists, resulting in the recovery of a cache of weapons,” he said.

The recovered weapons include four AK-47 rifles, one PKT Machine Gun, two RPG tubes,6 RPG bombs,28 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and 43 rounds of PKT ammunition.

He said during post-operation exploitation on May 2, locals handed over additional arms and confirmed further details about the neutralized terrorist leaders.

“Unfortunately, two civilians were caught in crossfire by stray bullets.

“The situation is being closely monitored, and efforts to clear the area of residual threats continue,” he explained.

The statement further said that on May 1, troops of Combat Team 2 (CT 2), in coordination with other security agencies, effectively responded to a protest by residents of Dayau village in Kaura Namoda LGA.

“The villagers, expressing frustration over recent bandit attacks, had blocked a major supply route by burning tires and obstructing traffic.

“The security team conducted a non-violent crowd dispersal operation, restored calm, and reopened the road.

“Normalcy has since returned to the area, and routine activities have resumed,” he added.

Brig. Gen. Timothy Opurum commended the gallantry and professionalism of the troops and reassured citizens of the Brigade’s unalloyed commitment to restoring peace and security across the state.

Last month alone, gunmen repeatedly attacked several communities in Benue and Plateau states, killing over 100 people and displacing thousands of others.

Some of the communities attacked in Plateau were Zikke and Kimakpa villages in Bassa district, and Otobi in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue.

IPOB: Simon Ekpa will soon be returned for trial, court told

    • ‘No weapons found with Kanu during 2015 arrest’

Simon Ekpa, an associate of the detained self acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, will soon be brought back to Nigeria for trial, a Federal High Court was told in Abuja yesterday.

An official of the Department of State Services (DSS), who was testifying at the resumption of proceedings in Kanu’s ongoing trial, disclosed this.

The witness, identified with the acronym PWAAA, said he knew Ekpa as an associate of Kanu and that he (Ekpa) would soon be brought back to the country for prosecution for supporting Kanu in his pro-Biafra agitation.

The witness, who was being cross-examined by Kanu’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), said he was not aware that any other person besides Kanu was being tried in relation to the pro-Biafra agitation.

He said that he learnt from the newspapers and social media about those backing the defendant in the agitation.

The witness said he could not remember Kanu complaining about corruption in high places, unemployment among youths and tendering apologies to the President for insults directed at him and the negative remarks against Igbo leaders.

He further said that he could not remember when Kanu described IPOB as s voluntary organisation that was not involved in carrying arms against the nation.

We will not bow to fear, terror, Tinubu warns

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has warned Nigeria “will not bow—not to fear, not to terror, and not to treachery.”

His warning comes amid ongoing attacks by terrorists and bandits in the North-Central and Northeast regions, including recent waves of violence in Plateau and Benue States that have left scores dead and thousands displaced.

Addressing frontline troops in Katsina State on Friday during a morale-boosting visit, Tinubu emphasised that the enemies of Nigeria, whether “domestic collaborators or foreign agents,” would not succeed in breaking the nation’s resolve.

“To those who seek to destabilise our nation, be they domestic collaborators or foreign agents—hear this: Nigeria will not bow. Not to fear. Not to terror. Not to treachery,” the President declared.

His remarks followed recent statements by Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia, who alleged that foreign mercenaries were responsible for repeated attacks on Benue communities, echoing a growing concern about the transnational dimension of insecurity in the region.

In his address to the troops stationed in the front lines of Katsina, Tinubu praised the Armed Forces as the “shield of Nigeria” and honored their sacrifices in the face of persistent threats.

“You are the brave sons and daughters who stand between our people and the forces of terror. Every inch of ground you hold, every terrorist you neutralise, and every community you secure is a victory for justice, freedom, and the future of our children,”he said.

The President emphasised that the battle against insecurity is not merely a territorial contest, but “a battle for the soul of Nigeria.”

He hailed the military’s resilience and described their patriotism as “the highest form,” lauding their commitment to serve without expectation of material reward.

“My dear soldiers, this is a defining moment in our history. The threats of terrorism, banditry, and insurgency have persisted for too long. Nigerians are counting on us and on you to end this menace and reclaim every inch of our territory,” Tinubu charged.

He assured the troops that their welfare remained a top priority for his administration, announcing that improvements were underway in housing, healthcare, insurance coverage, family support, and prompt payment of allowances.

“We are taking bold steps to equip you with advanced equipment, superior intelligence, and robust logistical support not only to defend this nation but to dominate and defeat every adversary,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu also rallied the troops with a call to action, asking, “Let me hear you loudly: Are you ready? Are you committed to ending this insecurity once and for all? Let your resolve echo through every valley and forest.”

The President reaffirmed unwavering support for the Armed Forces, promising to match their courage with investment and leadership.

“You, the Nigerian military, are the spearhead of this fight. With your valour and discipline, peace shall prevail,” he said.
