Kwankwaso, Governor Yusuf part ways over defection plan

    • As governor marks birthday, NNPP leader opens loyalty register
    • Federal lawmakers split

The rift between Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader Senator Rabiu Kwakwanso has deepened.

In reaction to the governor’s readiness to defect from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kwankwaso opened a loyalty register for political office holders to ascertain their allegiance and fidelity to his leadership.

The former governor began taking stock of his loyalists in Kano at the time Yusuf was celebrating his 63rd birthday in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

With the governor were top government officials and party chieftains.

Kwakwanso,  who shunned the ceremony, was busy in his Kano residence with “engagement meetings” with NNPP stakeholders, particularly members of the Kwakwansiyya Movement.

A source said moves and counter-moves by Yusuf and Kwankwaso have polarised the party and divided members of the NNPP in the National Assembly.

The governor has already secured the support of the 40-member House of Assembly, led by Speaker Jibril Isma’il Falgore, and all the 44 local government chairmen.

However, NNPP federal legislators have not openly indicated their willingness to defect to the APC along with the governor.

There are 21 House of Representatives from Kano state, out of which 13 are in NNPP.

Sources said Yusuf and Kwankwaso have polarized the NNPP federal lawmakers over the defection disagreement.

Out of the 13 NNPP representatives, Umar Mukhtari Zakari, who represents Tarauni Constituency, has publicly opposed the planned defection.

However, Aliyu Sani Madaki (Dala), Abdulmumin Jibrin (Bebeji/Kiru), Yusuf Rabiu (Sumaila/Takai), and Sani Abdullahi (Karaye/Rogo) have already moved to the APC.

Also, Kabiru Usman, who won a rerun in Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Constituency under the NNPP, and Sagir Ibrahim Koki (Kano Municipal) have defected to APC.

Although the defection was scheduled for yesterday, it was postponed by the APC national leadership till January 12.

In the earlier arrangement, Vice President Kashim Shettima and the national chairman of the APC Nentawe Yilwatda were billed to receive Yusuf into the party.

Party sources said the event was rescheduled to allow further consultation with the National Assembly lawmakers from the state and key stakeholders who are yet to fully commit to the move.

A close aide of the governor said the governor is yet to officially register at his ward and he has not obtained the APC membership card for formal defection.

The defection is part of a larger political realignment that will enable Yusuf to potentially take on a significant leadership role in the state chapter of the party, and as well seal his bid for the  governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

The move, a strategic decision to strengthen the APC’s position in Kano State, has been rejected by Kwankwaso, who is speculated to be on his way to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in protest.

The sources said Yusuf defection will be a significant blow to the Kwankwaso-led Kwankwasiyya Movement.

The former governor had publicly threatened that no one betrays the Kwankwasiyya movement and goes free.

The disagreement between Yusuf and Kwankwaso led to the sack of Hashimu Dungurawa (a pro-Kwankwaso chieftain) as state chairman of the party.

Yusuf has picked Alhaji Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya as Acting State Chairman.

A Kano State High Court ruling upheld the suspension of the embattled chairman and barred him from acting in that capacity, pending the determination of the suit.

But the national secretariat of the party has described the change in the leadership as a nullity and went ahead to dissolve the entire executive committees at the ward, local government and state levels indefinitely.

The APC is treating Yusuf’s defection move as a major political gain. It has significant implications for Kano State politics and beyond, including stripping the NNPP of its only governorship seat and potentially reducing its influence and viability as a national party.

The defection will bolster APC’s dominance in Kano and enhance its chances in the 2027 general election.

The existing power bloc of the Kano APC, led by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, had openly expressed their readiness to work with Yusuf.

Ganduje and the APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, have urged him to feel free to join the ruling party.

Yusuf’s much awaited arrival in APC may spark rivalry within the APC. It will ultimately neutralise the chance of Deputy President of the Senate Barau Jibrin who has been aspiring for the ticket, a development that will likely influence negotiations, future alliances and voter alignments in Kano State.

Barau, who represents Kano North, has remained indifferent to the governor’s move, apparently because of his ambition.

Senator Rufai Sani Hanga (Kano Central) remains in the NNPP with Kwankwaso, while Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila (Kano South) defected from NNPP to APC last year and he is certainly not with Kwankwaso.

Wike to APC national secretary: steer clear of Rivers politics

…says they should stay off Rivers

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, to steer clear of political affairs in Rivers State.

Wike’s warning followed comments attributed to Basiru, who had cautioned the APC National Vice Chairman (South-South), Victor Giadom, against what he described as disrespect towards Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, allegedly to curry favour with Wike.

Basiru’s remarks came after the minister’s recent “thank you” visit to Gokana Local Government Area.

Reacting while addressing residents of Oyigbo Local Government Area, Wike advised Basiru and other politicians to desist from actions capable of igniting tension in the state.

He stated that both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were now working towards a common objective of ensuring the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

The minister also expressed displeasure over what he described as attempts by politicians to position themselves to benefit from the N600 billion Rivers fund, warning against politicising resources meant for the development of the state.

Wike said, “Let me warn those who came to Rivers State, because you have heard that we have N600 billion. You come here, you collect, and you open your mouth to talk anyhow.

“I say it here, take this message to your National Secretary, leave Rivers State alone. Go and ask those who have done it before. Don’t take our support for Mr. President for granted. You have to be careful with the statements you make.

“Today, you are enjoying in Osun, you don’t know those who did the work. You are opening your mouth to talk about Rivers State. Anything you see, take it.

Tinubu nominates Abe, Adeniji to chair NUPRC, NMDPRA boards, seeks Senate confirmation

…submits 21 nominees for oil and gas regulators

…urges expeditious approval following CEOs’ confirmation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Senator Magnus Abe and energy expert, Adegbite Ebiowei Adeniji, as board chairmen of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), respectively, and has asked the Senate to confirm their appointments.

According to a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President, in two separate letters to the Senate, sought confirmation of 21 nominees to serve on the boards of the two key petroleum-sector regulators established under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

For the NUPRC, President Tinubu nominated Abe, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District for two terms, as board chairman.

Abe is a former board member of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and currently chairs the National Agency for the Great Green Wall.

Other nominees for the NUPRC board as non-executive commissioners are Engineer Paul Yaro Jezhi, a former chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Kaduna State, and Mr Sunday Adebayo Babalola, a former deputy director of the defunct Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).

The President also nominated seven executive commissioners for the NUPRC.

They are Muhammed Sabo Lamido (Finance); Edu Inyang (Exploration and Acreage); Justin Ezeala (Economic Regulation and Strategic Planning); Henry Darlington Oki (Development and Production); Indabawa Bashari Alka (Corporate Services and Administration); Mahmood Tijani (Health, Safety and Environment); and Ms Olayemi Adeboyejo as Secretary and Legal Adviser.

While Lamido and Adeboyejo were first appointed in 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, and Alka in 2023 by President Tinubu, Inyang, Ezeala, Tijani, Babalola, and Jezhi are new nominees.

In the second letter, the President nominated Adeniji, a lawyer with over 30 years’ experience in energy and natural resources, as chairman of the NMDPRA board.

Adeniji previously served as special technical adviser to the Minister of State for Petroleum on upstream and gas issues and was part of the World Bank Oil and Gas Policy team that advised Nigeria on petroleum-sector reforms.

The Senate had earlier confirmed Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan as CEO of the NUPRC and Engineer Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as CEO of the NMDPRA.

Rivers State Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu, and the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Benibo Anabraba, have formally dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Odu officially registered as a member of the APC in her ward at Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA).

She completed her e-registration at Akabuka, Ward 8, Unit 11, on Sunday and later toured the six zones of ONELGA to sensitise the people on the ongoing APC e-registration exercise.

She urged residents to demonstrate their support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara through massive registration in the party.

She said the registration exercise came after the governor declared for the APC and was intended to further consolidate political support for both the President and Fubara at the grassroots.

The deputy governor said six zonal meetings had already been held to ensure effective mobilisation and smooth implementation of the registration process across the local government area.

“Today, I came to sensitise the people, and everywhere we went, there were large crowds who came out to receive us. They said wherever I go, they will go with me, and wherever Governor Fubara and President Tinubu go, they will go,” she said.

Odu noted that the tour covered all six zones of the local government area, such as Egi, Omoku, Osomini, Igburu, Egbema, and Ndoni, adding that the enthusiasm and turnout reflected growing acceptance of the APC in the area.

The SSG, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, resigned his membership of the PDP in a letter dated January 5, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of Ward 1, PDP, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The letter was submitted through the party’s ward office at Bob-Manuel’s Compound, Abonnema.

In the letter, Dr. Anabraba said that his decision to withdraw from the PDP was purely personal, stressing that the move was taken after careful personal consideration.

  • Hunt down terrorists, Tinubu orders

    Hunt down terrorists, Tinubu orders

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered a manhunt for terrorists responsible for the killing of scores of civilians and the abduction of women and children in Niger State.

The directive followed coordinated terrorist attacks on communities in Agwarra and Borgu Local Government Areas of the state.

No fewer than 42 people were killed in brutal raids on villages and a busy market.

Security forces also intensified counter-terrorism operations that led to the killing of over 50 bandits across Kano, Katsina and Kogi states.

The Niger attack occurred on Saturday at Kasuwan Daji market in Sukumbara village.

Reacting yesterday, President Tinubu condemned the killings and kidnappings, describing them as a “grave assault on innocent Nigerians.”

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President directed the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to track down the attackers and ensure the immediate rescue of abducted victims.

He said: “These terrorists have tested the resolve of our country and its people. They must face the full consequences of their criminal actions.

“No matter who they are or what their intent is, they must be hunted down.

“They, and all those who aid, abet or enable them, will be caught and brought to justice.”

President Tinubu extended condolences to the families of the victims and the government and people of Niger State, assuring them of the Federal Government’s resolve to restore peace.

He directed security agencies to scale up operations around vulnerable communities, particularly those close to forests used as terrorist hideouts.

The President said: “These times demand our humanity. We must stand together as one people and confront these monsters in unison.

“United, we can and must defeat them and reclaim peace in our communities.”

The terrorists were said to be fleeing intensified military pressure from air strikes in the Northwest.

They stormed the community around 4:30 p.m., firing sporadically, burning stalls, looting shops and abducting residents, including schoolchildren.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers came from the Kainji Lake National Park forest along Kabe District, spreading terror across villages in Agwarra and Borgu council areas.

Local accounts initially put the death toll at 42, with residents claiming that 37 people were killed in Kasuwan Daji near Papiri, while five others died in Kaima village.

A joint security assessment later confirmed 30 fatalities, with several people still missing.

The terrorists also attacked a Catholic mission house and school in Sukumbara village, destroying property and stealing motorcycles and cash.

A resident said: “The government and security agencies should come to our aid. These terrorists have been coming out of the forest for about a week now, wreaking havoc.

“Some of the abducted children are pupils of St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri.”

Confirming the attack on the Catholic mission, the Director of Communications of the Kontagora Diocese, Rev. Fr. Stephen Kabirat, said the parish priest narrowly escaped abduction.

“They came to abduct the parish priest, but he escaped before they gained access to his quarters.

“They destroyed religious items, carted away two motorcycles and cash worth over N200,000, and abducted villagers, including children,” he said.

Another villager said many communities had fled into the bush out of fear.

“Some villagers are now sleeping in the forest because of continued terrorist activities,” he said.

The terrorists struck in the Agwarra local government in November when they abducted pupils, teachers and workers of the St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri. They were freed from the abductors custody about a month after.

    Bago: attack ‘cruel’

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, described the attacks as “cruel and nefarious”.

He lamented that victims were Muslims and Christians from diverse ethnic backgrounds.

“It is disturbing and worrying to begin the year with such unfortunate incidents,” the governor said through his Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Obed Nuhu Nana.

He said the attackers were terrorists fleeing Kainji Lake National Park towards Kebbi and Rijau areas, allegedly out of fear of further military strikes.

“They killed innocent traders, attacked a police outpost in Shafacci village and a Catholic missionary school in Sukumbara, carting away motorcycles and destroying property,” the statement said.

Bago assured residents that a joint security task force was already trailing the terrorists with a view to rescuing abducted victims.

    Abiodun demands justice

Ogun State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Prince Dapo Abiodun, condemned the massacre, describing it as “callous, senseless and a crime against humanity.”

He commiserated with Bago and the people of Niger State, urging security agencies to hunt down and prosecute the perpetrators.

“This cowardly onslaught on innocent citizens going about their lawful business represents a stain on our national conscience,” Abiodun said.

“The perpetrators must be completely crushed with all the resources available to the Nigerian state.”

Military strikes back in Kano, Katsina

As outrage mounted over the Niger killings, the Nigerian military recorded significant successes against terrorists in the North-West and North-Central.

Troops of the Joint Task Force, supported by the Air Component of Operation Fansan Yamma, neutralised at least 23 bandits fleeing Kano State after coordinated attacks on Shanono and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas.

According to the Nigerian Army, the bandits launched the attacks late Thursday night into Friday morning but were repelled by ground troops.

Intelligence later revealed that the fleeing terrorists regrouped in Karaduwa village, Matazu LGA of Katsina State, to bury their dead.

“A precision air strike was conducted, resulting in the neutralisation of at least 23 terrorists,” said Major Zubairu Babatunde, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade.

Several weapons and motorcycles were destroyed in the strike

Troops kill bandits, arrest logistics supplier in Kogi

In Kogi State, troops of 12 Brigade Nigerian Army killed three bandits and arrested a suspected logistics supplier during coordinated patrols in Kabba-Bunu and Yagba West Local Government Areas.

Acting on intelligence, troops laid ambushes along known bandit routes, recovering AK-47 rifles, ammunition and locally fabricated weapons.

The arrested suspect, identified as Sunday Adedotun, was found with supplies allegedly meant for bandits.

“These operations underscore sustained pressure on criminal networks and their enablers,” the Army said.

    Army destroys armoury in Taraba

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) intercepted the wife of a notorious criminal kingpin, John Gata, and neutralised a major arms cache in Amadu Village, Takum Local Government Area, Taraba.

A credible source at Army Headquarters told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that actionable intelligence indicated the suspect’s wife was moving from Amadu Village through Wukari, Kyado, and Zaki-Biam toward Gboko.

The source said the troops of Sub Sector 1A promptly established a snap roadblock at Zaki-Biam, successfully intercepting the woman without incident.

He said the suspect later led troops to the criminal’s hidden armoury, where they recovered 13 AK-47 rifles, 38 magazines, 690 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and four hand grenades.

According to him, the facility was subsequently destroyed to deny further use by the criminal network.

He confirmed that troops returned safely to base and noted that the security situation in the area remained calm but unpredictable, with civil-military relations cordial.

“Troops’ morale and operational readiness continue to remain high as fighting and confidence-building patrols persist in the region,” he said

The military high command lauded troops for their professionalism and assured Nigerians of continued aggressive operations.

The Army urged citizens to provide timely intelligence, stressing that collaboration remains vital to defeating terrorism.

    Atiku, Obi seek action

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-presidential candidate Peter Obi condemned the attacks, calling for urgent and decisive action to halt the worsening insecurity.

In a statement, Atiku described the attacks as heinous and deeply troubling.

He said the brazen assault on defenceless rural communities underscored the fragile security situation in parts of the country.

The former vice president extended condolences to the victims’ families and expressed solidarity with the people and government of Niger State.

He urged security agencies to act swiftly to secure the safe and unconditional release of all abducted persons, particularly the schoolchildren, and to restore confidence in affected communities.

Atiku stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the foremost duty of any government, calling for a strengthening of Nigeria’s security architecture and the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attacks.

Obi condemned the violence and renewed his call for leadership anchored on unity, truth, accountability and compassion.

He said Nigeria must confront insecurity with honesty and resolve, noting that leadership thrives on trust and transparency.

He urged authorities to place the welfare of citizens, especially the poor, weak and vulnerable, at the centre of national priorities, stressing that a nation’s true measure lies in the dignity and safety it offers its people.

Obi also called for a shift in national priorities toward investing in hospitals, schools, jobs and productivity, rather than waste and extravagance.

He said addressing insecurity requires not just force, but a recommitment to justice, accountability and shared sacrifice.
