Six countries with highest number of billionaires in 2025

In 2025, the global billionaire landscape continues to reflect shifting tides of innovation, industry dominance, and economic resilience. Despite market volatility and geopolitical challenges, a select group of nations still lead the world in wealth creation — with the United States, China, and India maintaining their stronghold at the top.

Here’s a detailed look at the six countries with the highest number of billionaires in 2025, based on the latest wealth reports:

    1. United States

The United States remains the undisputed global leader in billionaire wealth, home to 902 billionaires with a combined fortune of $6.8 trillion.
This dominance is powered by the country’s thriving technology, finance, and entertainment industries, which continue to produce record numbers of ultra-wealthy individuals.

Top names include Elon Musk ($342 billion), Mark Zuckerberg ($216 billion), Jeff Bezos ($215 billion), and Larry Ellison ($192 billion). America’s deep-rooted entrepreneurial culture and robust capital market make it the ultimate billionaire hub.

    2. China

China ranks second with 450 billionaires, collectively worth $1.7 trillion.
Although slightly below its 2023 peak, China’s billionaire count rebounded from last year’s dip, showcasing the country’s continued economic vitality.

Major players include Zhang Yiming ($65.5 billion), founder of ByteDance, and Zhong Shanshan ($57.7 billion), whose bottled water and pharmaceutical ventures have made him one of Asia’s richest men. Despite regulatory challenges and slowing growth, China’s innovative spirit remains strong.

    3. India

India holds the third position with 205 billionaires valued at $941 billion in total.
Leading figures such as Mukesh Ambani ($92.5 billion) and Gautam Adani ($56.3 billion) continue to shape the country’s industrial and economic trajectory.

India’s wealth surge is fueled by its expanding technology, renewable energy, and consumer markets, positioning it as one of the fastest-growing wealth centers in the world.

    4. Germany

Germany sits in fourth place with 171 billionaires, whose combined fortunes reach $793 billion, up by about $150 billion from last year.

The backbone of Europe’s industrial power, Germany’s wealth stems from manufacturing, retail, and logistics.
Among its richest citizens are Dieter Schwarz ($41 billion) of Lidl and Klaus-Michael Kühne ($39.6 billion) in global transport. The country’s commitment to industrial innovation and economic stability keeps it firmly among the world’s elite economies.

    5. Russia

Russia follows with 146 billionaires, up from 125 the previous year, collectively worth $625.5 billion.

Despite ongoing sanctions and economic hurdles, Russia’s oil, gas, and metals industries continue to produce immense wealth.

Prominent billionaires include Vagit Alekperov ($28.7 billion), Alexei Mordashov ($28.6 billion), and Leonid Mikhelson ($28.4 billion) — all key players in the nation’s energy sector. Russia’s economic adaptability has helped sustain its ultra-rich population amid global pressure.

    6. France

France rounds out the list with 68 billionaires, who together control around $550 billion in assets.
The country’s billionaire base thrives on its luxury, fashion, and cosmetics industries, led by Bernard Arnault ($233 billion), the chairman of LVMH and one of the richest individuals on Earth.
With iconic brands like Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Hermès, France remains the undisputed capital of global luxury, consistently turning creativity into immense wealth.

We know our son, Godswill, we also know what he can do – Ibibio Traditional Council

The leadership of the Ibibio Traditional Council in Akwa Ibom State, has declared Senate President Godswill Akpabio, “is well known to us, the people of Akwa Ibom State and we know what he can do.”

The Special Assistant to the President of the Senate on Media, Jackson Udom, who disclosed this in a statement in Abuja, added that Akpabio also pledged 100 per cent support for Governor Umo Eno’s second term bid in office.

Speaking while receiving Akpabio, (whom he referred to as “my son”) and his entourage made up of some members of the National Assembly, in his palace in Nsit Ubium, on Friday, the Oku Ibom Ibibio, His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk, said “this is our son and we, as a people are very happy to receive him in this Palace. We know what he can do and we are very proud of his achievements in his current office as the Senate President”.

In what could be seen as a veil reference to the campaign of calumny, lies and falsehood against the person and office of the Senate President by some disgruntled individuals from the state in the social media, Ntenyin said: “I am delighted to have you and your colleagues in this Palace. You have come to pay homage to your fathers here. We know you. We know who Godswill Obot Akpabio is. We testify that we know who you are. If we don’t know who you are, it therefore, means we are not yours.”

“As a king, I know every of my children. I know the good and I know the bad ones, but the good and the bad should stay together with the hope that they will change for good in the future.

“As a child of grace, we have seen where grace has led you to. When you get back to Abuja thank President Bola Tinubu for us. Anything that is good is good. We as a people are happy that he is carrying you along in the administration of this county. To whom much is given, much is expected and one good turn deserves another,” he noted.

The monarch pleaded with the Senate President to ensure that the dream of Akwa Ibom State having its Seaport becomes a reality. He thanked the Senators for all the good works they have been doing as lawmakers, especially the recently passed bill on defilement of minors and its legal consequences.

Akpabio thanked the royal fathers for the grand reception even without any prior notice, describing him as a man of peace.

According to him: “I am very happy to be here and I thank you my fathers for this grand reception of me and my entourage even at a very short notice. I am here today with my colleagues and family members, which shows that I am from here and my home is intact.

“Let me thank you for being a peace-loving father. You are a man of peace. The most costly peace is better than the cheapest war. I made an appeal to him without seeing him physically and he listened to me and today, there is peace in Akwa Ibom State. Kindly extend my greetings to your son, my governor and our leader, Pastor Umo Eno, another man of peace, who not only say it, but does it.”

Akpabio stated further that his visit to the palace was a major reconciliation move among the people of the state, saying, “my visit to this Palace today is a major reconciliation move and will rekindle peace, love and unity in Akwa Ibom State.

“Akwa Ibom State under Governor Umo Eno is united because of his decision to link us to the centre by joining the APC. Let me assure you that I will support him 100 per cent to succeed as a second term governor.

“Don’t listen to nay sayers and blackmailers. We are solidly behind him and that was why immediately he joined the APC, I personally handed over the structure of the party in the state to him, because when I was the governor I controlled the structure. I will continue to work for the peace, unity and development of Akwa Ibom State,” he declared.

At the end of the visit, the royal fathers prayed for Akpabio and his family and his success in office.

    • Names Oluyede Chief of Defence Staff;

    • Appointment of new helmsmen routine exercise – Presidency

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday approved major changes in the leadership of the armed forces with a charge to newly appointed service chiefs to be vigilant and unifying.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Chief Sunday Dare, yesterday, the President named former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff replacing Gen. Christopher Musa.

Maj-Gen. W. Shaibu was appointed the Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice-Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as the new Chief of Naval Staff.

Maj-Gen. E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as the Chief of Defence Intelligence.

All appointments, the statement said, take immediate effect.

President Tinubu, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expressed deep appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Musa, and other retired Service Chiefs for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership” during their tenure.

He charged the newly appointed military heads to justify the confidence reposed in them by demonstrating “enhanced professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship” in the discharge of their duties.

The shake-up in the military hierarchy comes as part of ongoing efforts by the Tinubu administration to reposition the security sector, improve coordination among the services, and sustain momentum in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other security challenges across the country.

In a post on his verified X handle, @officialABAT, on Thursday, the President charged the newly appointed service chiefs to deepen professionalism, vigilance, and unity within the Armed Forces as they serve the nation with honour and dedication.

He said the new appointments were part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture and enhance operational effectiveness.

He said: “I have approved changes in the hierarchy of our Armed Forces to further strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture.

“I charge the new Service Chiefs to deepen professionalism, vigilance, and unity within our Armed Forces as they serve our nation with honour.”

President Tinubu also expressed appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other former Service Chiefs for their “selfless service and dedicated leadership,” assuring that the new appointments reflect his administration’s resolve to ensure a secure and stable Nigeria.

The Presidency clarified that President Tinubu’s appointment of new service chiefs was a routine administrative exercise carried out in line with his constitutional powers as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Mr. Sunday Dare, stated this while reacting to media reports suggesting that the leadership changes signaled internal discord within the administration.

He described the appointments as part of the President’s ongoing efforts to recalibrate and strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture for greater efficiency and effectiveness.

He emphasised that appointments and reappointments in the security sector remain the exclusive preserve of the President, guided by his duty to safeguard national security and ensure effective leadership within the Armed Forces.

“It is a routine. The President, as the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic can make such appointments just as he changed ministers a few months ago,” he added.

The latest changes mark another strategic recalibration of the country’s security leadership under President Tinubu’s watch, aimed at consolidating gains in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other threats to national peace.

Shake-up in military remarkable  – Gen. Atolagbe

Maj-Gen Anthony Atolagbe (rtd), a former Commander of Operations Safe Haven, yesterday commended President Tinubu for the shake-up in the military amid the security challenges facing the country.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Atolagbe, a former Director of Peace-keeping Operations with the Nigerian Army, said the President, in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief, did something remarkable by replacing the service chiefs.

“This is a very bold step; it is going to make the military align properly with the procedures and the necessary steps that need to be taken in the career progression of officers. When you allow officers to overstay, you dim the light of the other ones that are behind.

“But this President has done something that is remarkable. I know that the system will be quite excited with this development,” he said.

Asked if Tinubu made some special considerations by retaining some senior officers, he said the appointments were made because the officers met the requirements for their new positions.

“They fit appropriately to where they are right now. Career progression allows for continuity in the operations that are being carried out in the country.

“Both the Chief of Army Staff and the CDS are people who are coming from the theatre and broadly aligned with the security situation within the country.

“The Chief of Defence Staff is an infantry officer, the Chief of Army Staff is an armoured officer. This aligns with proper steps that are being taken,” he added.

ADC urges transparency in changing service chiefs

On its part the African Democratic Congress (ADC) called on President Tinubu to provide clear and honest explanations to Nigerians on the reasons behind the recent changes in the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC acknowledged that the President, as Commander-in-Chief, has the constitutional authority to appoint or remove service chiefs.

However, it expressed concern that the decision came abruptly, amid public speculation about an alleged coup attempt.

The party noted that government responses to these rumours had so far lacked clarity, saying that an issue of such national importance required openness and transparency rather than what it described as “mixed signals and confusion.”

Noting that most of the outgoing service chiefs were appointed only a few months ago, making the sudden changes more surprising, it stressed that such decisions have far-reaching implications for morale and stability within the military, and therefore should be based on strong and clearly communicated reasons.

“The Federal Government owes Nigerians a categorical explanation about what truly happened,” the statement said, adding that public trust and national cohesion depend on transparent communication, especially during sensitive times.

The party reiterated that, as a responsible opposition, its primary concern remains the stability of Nigeria and the protection of democratic governance.

It expressed worries that developments in neighbouring countries such as Chad and across the Sahel underscore the need for vigilance and steady leadership at home.

While acknowledging the security challenges across different regions of the country, the ADC cautioned that the federal government appeared distracted by political considerations rather than focusing on restoring public confidence and addressing the resurgence of insecurity.

It warned that the near wholesale replacement of the military’s top hierarchy without a clear explanation could further fuel rumours and conspiracy theories, thereby undermining confidence in the government’s handling of national security.

The party urged the government to communicate openly with citizens, dispel growing speculations, and reassure the public that Nigeria’s democracy remains stable and secure.

It affirmed that transparency, accountability and responsible leadership are essential to maintaining peace, unity and public confidence in the country’s governance institutions.

Wike to PDP govs: sidelining me will bury party

    • Says Jonathan hasn’t informed him about running in 2027

    • Despite challenges, PDP will reclaim power in 2027 – Lawal

    • Party’s Northwest elders forum kicks over mass defection

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, yesterday warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors that their strategy of excluding him from key party decisions will lead to the party’s collapse.

Wike, who gave the warning at a monthly live media parley monitored by our correspondent in Abuja, expressed his frustration at being sidelined from major consultations despite his long-standing influence in the party.

“Have I not said it before now that the booby trap you are setting will consume you? The way these present governors are doing, they will bury this party,” he said.

The FCT Minister directly challenged the logic of his exclusion, asking whether his current role as a minister or his past contributions rendered him irrelevant.

“I am the FCT Minister. Are you telling me that because I am not a governor, you will hold a PDP stakeholders’ meeting and exclude me, and then expect the party to survive?” he asked.

Wike dismissed the idea that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was to blame for the PDP’s internal crises, asserting that the problems were self-inflicted.

He said: “All these talks about APC are rubbish. Is it APC that makes you take wrong decisions? You mean two or three people, because they are governors and receive large allocations, will go and decide, and you tell me to follow? Follow who?”

On the upcoming PDP national convention, the minister accused the party leadership of failing to complete essential groundwork.

“If they do the right thing, will anybody stall the convention? They have not done the congresses and other things that should be in place,” he said.

His warning comes as the PDP grapples with internal defections and legal battles threatening its planned convention slated for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

He said: “Have I not said that so many governors will leave? Is this the first time you have heard me say so? It is very embarrassing. The governor was the Chairman of the Convention Committee. It is very embarrassing.

“Diri was the Chairman of the Zoning Committee, even though I knew from the beginning that they were all playing games. I knew from the beginning. I said it before. There is nothing I said that has not come to pass,” he said.

With what is going on politically, Wike said, PDP will continue to lose if there is no change.

“It is very embarrassing. I knew from the beginning that some PDP members were playing games. The house has (collapsed) since. PDP did not do the right thing. They should follow due process to the national convention.

“If you think you will sideline people to hold the convention, it will not be possible. If a proper convention is to be held, I will attend. But if the convention is not a proper one, I will not attend.

Wike said the leadership had failed to complete necessary congresses and other key processes, which he claimed were stalling progress.

“If they do the right thing, will anybody stall the convention? They have not done the congresses and other things that should be in place,” he said.

The PDP has, in recent months, faced internal crises and a wave of defections involving top members including Governors Peter Mbah, Sheriff Oborevwori and Umo Enoh of Enugu, Delta and Akwa Ibom states respectively.

The party is also battling multiple legal suits over its forthcoming convention.

He added: “Assuming I am not a minister, by the role I have played in the PDP till now, is it right to say I cannot be consulted in taking decisions of the party? Certainly not.”

Wike further criticized the notion that internal crises could be blamed on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that PDP’s problems were self-inflicted.

“All these talks about APC are rubbish. Is it APC that makes you take wrong decisions? You mean two or three people, because they are governors and receive large allocations, will go and decide, and you tell me to follow? Follow who?”

On the stance of Wike on Jonathan running for the 2027 presidential elections, the minister disclosed that former President Goodluck Jonathan has not informed him about any plan to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The minister said: “You’re the one telling me here. Jonathan has never told me; he has never called me one day, ‘Look, I’m being pressured to run, what’s your thinking’? If he calls me and asks me, I will be able to tell him my mind and what I feel.”

He added: “I will not because you people put something on the pages of the newspapers, just like you said they flew me out of the country—then, I now assume it’s correct.”

On the emergence of former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as the consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike distanced himself from the development, saying he knows nothing about it.

“I don’t know about Tanimu Turaki becoming chairman; maybe he becomes chairman for another faction—it’s not the PDP I know,” he stated.

The PDP northern stakeholders had recently endorsed Turaki as their consensus candidate ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Speaking further, Wike dismissed the upcoming convention as illegal, hinting that he would not attend.

“How do you want me to attend a convention that I know by law that there is no convention?” he queried.

On the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the minister said he was ready to appear as a witness of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader if subpoenaed by the court.

His comment followed a motion filed by Kanu at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, notifying the court of his plan to open his defence on October 24, 2025.

The IPOB leader indicated his intention to call 23 witnesses, including Wike, former Minister of Defence Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), and former Chief of Army Staff Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd).

Wike, however, clarified that he had not requested to be named as a witness and had not received any legal notification from the court. He said he would only appear if formally summoned.

“If you see Nnamdi Kanu, ask him why he listed me. I did not go to him to say I want to be a witness; you are the one saying that. So, if you see him, ask him why did you list Wike as one of your witnesses?

“You don’t become a witness by reading a newspaper. Nobody has served me process; nobody has subpoenaed me.

“So, because I saw Wike has been listed, therefore, I begin to run helter-skelter. No, you do not do that. If I am served, if I am subpoenaed to come and witness or to give evidence, I must obey the court, I must appear,” he said.

Wike also reacted to recent comments by a former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on the poor state of public schools in the FCT.

The Nation reports that Obi, during a recent visit to the LEA Primary School in FCT, had decried the deplorable condition of learning facilities, noting that he was shocked to find classrooms without chairs or toilets.

The former Anambra State governor described the situation as “unacceptable and unworthy of a responsible nation.”

Responding, Wike said his administration was aware of the infrastructural decay in some parts of the FCT but insisted that it was unrealistic to expect every problem to be solved immediately.

Wike said: “I heard him when he was saying that public schools are in dilapidated nature across the Federal Capital Territory. We cannot solve every problem as far as development is concerned. Government is a continuum. There were several administrations before we came, and other administrations will come after us.”

The minister maintained that the FCT Administration was making steady progress under the Renewed Hope agenda of President Tinubu, particularly in infrastructure, education, and health care, noting that development would be implemented in phases.

Wike added that while constructive criticism was welcomed, stakeholders should acknowledge ongoing efforts to improve living standards across the federal capital territory.

PDP will reclaim power in 2027 despite challenges – Lawal

Zamfara State governor, Dauda Lawal, said yesterday  that Leaders of the main opposition People’s Democraatic Party (PDP) must lay aside personal interests and prejudices to rebuild a party ready to reclaim from the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Governor Lawal, who spoke shortly after the inaugural meeting of the accreditation sub-committee for the elective national convention in Ibadan, said history favours the party to reclaim power in 2027 despite the challenges it is presently confronted with.

He said: “Let me take you back to history. In 2015, when PDP had over 29 to 30 governors, what happened at the end of the day? I’m sure you’ll be the judge. So as I said, no shaking, no alarm.

“Our great party is a family, and like any family, we may have disagreements. It is inevitable no matter what we do. It’s just a matter of time. But the overall interest of this collective family must supersede individual ambitions.

“We as leaders remain steadfast in our resolve to provide unbiased and selfless service to consensus and build a convention that is truly all-inclusive. A great thinker once said alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. This word resonates deeply today.

“We must stand together, we must work together, we must heal together. As you come on this way to your assignment, I pray for the divine intervention and wisdom, as well as guidance from each one of you.

“I wish to make a heartfelt appeal to all of us. Leadership comes with a lot of responsibility. But I believe all of us were carefully selected because we have what it takes to provide that leadership.

“Let us set aside our differences. Let us embrace the spirit of genuine reconciliation.”

Reacting to a statement by the National Organising Secretary about the choice of former Minister for Special Duties as the consensus candidate of the North as Chairman of the PDP, Governor Lawal said: “I don’t think that should be something we should be concerned about, because politics is about give and take.

“No matter who is selected, there will always be agitation from the other members. So it’s normal. It is something that is internal and we are working on making sure everybody is on board so that we can have a very, very successful convention.”

Speaking on the work of the accreditation committee, he said: “We are here to lay the foundation for an event that will define our future. The national convention in Ibadan come November 2025 under the able leadership of His Excellency Rt Hon Omar Madufintri, the executive governor of Adana state as well as the chairman of the national convention organising committee.

“We have begun a journey and today we are bringing on board one of the most vital engines, which is the accreditation committee. To the men and women selected to serve on this sub-committee, I extend a special welcome.

“You have been chosen not for a routine task but for one of the most critical assignments in our democratic process.

“The work you are about to undertake is the very foundation upon which a credible transparent and successful convention will be built.

“The mandate of this committee is a very heavy burden and your responsibilities are very clear.”

Party’s Northwest elders’ forum kicks over mass defection

The recent defection of thousands of opposition PDP members wooed by the Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Bello Matawalle to APC has stirred a fresh round of lamentation by the Northern Elders Unity Forum of opposition party.

They have accused the Minister of coercing officials and ardent supporters of the PDP holding positions in Zamfara and Kaduna states respectively to join the ruling APC at the centre, urging President Bola Tinubu to call the minister to order.

The Forum described the actions of the minister as attempt to bring disrepute to the survival of the opposition party in the Northwest.

The PDP alleged that the minister lured innocent supporters of the party, using excessive resources to curry his way; a development they described as unhealthy for democracy.

The National Secretary of the Forum, Dr Abbas Sadauki (Dan Madamin Tofa), who condemned the actions and the process, said they were attempts to bring to disrepute the survival of opposition in the Northwest.

Sadauki spoke in Gusau, Zamfara State capital shortly after holding a meeting with party elders from Kaura Namoda, Zurmi, Tsafe and Bungudu local government areas of Zamfara State.

He described the Minister as a desperate politician who by all means wanted to destroy PDP in Zamfara and other states of the Northwest for the 2027 political ambition of his party, APC.

“It is evident that Matawalle has targeted some particular leaders of the party in the Northwest geopolitical zone,” he stressed.

However, Sadauki said the Minister’s antecedent of use of power and political appointments to coerce many of the PDP hard working and loyal members was clear.

“It has created a great vacuum within the party leadership, particularly in the Northwest,” he added, saying it is never a good omen for the country’s democratic process and progress.

“Taking this direction by Matawalle is crippling our party and democracy by misguiding them into believing that there is greener pasture defecting from PDP to ruling APC at the centre. This is injurious to the genuineness and progress of democracy in Nigeria,” the Forum Secretary said.

    • I’ll testify in Kanu’s trial if formally summoned- Wike

A Federal High Court in Abuja has threatened to invoke its powers “to make the necessary orders” should the detained self acclaimed leader of the proscribed separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, fail to utilise the opportunity accorded him to conduct his defence in the terrorism charges against him.

Justice James Omotosho said this while adjourning further hearing in Kanu’s terrorism trial till October 27 following an oral application for adjournment by the defendant, who is currently conducting his case after sacking his lawyers on Thursday.

At the resumption of proceedings on Friday, prosecuting lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, told the court that the case was scheduled for defence and that he was ready.

When it was his turn to speak, Kanu said he would be representing himself, and then told the court that he would not be able to open his defence as earlier planned, because he had not been able to access the case-file.

He said his lawyers left him on October 23, and since then he had not been given the case-file.

Kanu said those who were to bring the case-file to him in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where he was being held, were unable to do so.

He prayed the court for an adjournment till Monday, October 27 to enable him access the case-file and familiarise himself with its contents.

Kanu told the court that he was expecting witnesses from all over the world, including the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Kenya and Ethiopia.

He applied for an order that the DSS should allow him access to people even on Saturday and Sunday for the purpose of preparing his defence.

When asked by the judge if he was aware that Kanu was calling witnesses from outside the country, Awomolo said he did not know where the defendant’s proposed witnesses were coming from, but he knew that Kanu listed a number of people who he planned to call.

Awomolo said the prosecution was only interested in the defendant bringing his witnesses to court to conduct his defence as ordered by the court.

He urged the court to note that Kanu has expended two, out of the six days allocated to him to open and close his defence, without being able to begin his defence.

Awomolo said: “The court should note that he (Kanu) has six days. He has spent two days, including today. I urge the court to stick with the case schedule earlier announced.”

In his intervention, Justice Omotosho expressed doubt if the leader of Kanu’s former legal team, Kanu Agabi (SAN) would hold on to the defendant’s case-file after he announced his withdrawal from the case.

He noted that the defendant did not raise the issue the previous day (Thursday) when Agabi and other senior lawyers in his former legal team were in court.

The judge recalled that when he granted accelerated hearing in the case, none of the parties objected. He said days were accordingly allocated to each side to conduct its case. He added: “I will still stick to those numbers of days.”

Justice Omotosho said although he did not believe that Agabi would keep the case-file after withdrawing from the case, he would grant the adjournment sought by Kanu in the interest of justice and fair hearing.

The judge said: “The defendant has sought an adjournment till Monday for him to open his defence. The court will grant that request.

“The right under Section 36 of the Constitution is a sacred right. The right is more than giving opportunity to the defendant. The right is not that the defendant must be compelled to exercise the right.

“Now that the opportunity is not being used, I want to beg the defendant in the name of the Almighty God to utilise this opportunity.”

Justice Omotosho noted that Kanu’s failure to utilise the opportunity was denying other defendants in other cases before his court the opportunity to have their cases heard.

He added: “If the opportunity is not utilised, the court will not hesitate to invoke its powers.

“We should make use of the judicial time given to us. The court will not continue to waste its time.

“At the appropriate time, the court will invoke its powers and make the necessary orders,” the judge said.

Justice Omotosho noted that although Kanu did not provide evidence that the DSS was eavesdropping on his interactions with his lawyers, the court granted his request to meet with his lawyers in the courtroom on October 22.

The judge said he was surprised that the defendant and his legal team did not fully utilise the time allocated to them for that meeting, which was between 9am and 2pm.

He then declared: “Henceforth, this court will not grant such an opportunity again. The claim that the DSS is eavesdropping on his interactions with his lawyers was not supported by evidence.

“The DSS should provide him with opportunities to meet with his counsel. The DSS should give him access to his counsel even on Saturday and Sunday,” the judge said and adjourned till October 27.

Court grants Sowore, 13 other pro-Kanu protesters bail at N500,000 each

A Magistrate’s Court in Kuje, Abuja has granted bail to politician and online publisher, Omoyele Sowore, and 13 others arrested during Monday’s protest staged by them in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to compel the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, who is undergoing terrorism trial.

They were arraigned on Friday before Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id on two First Information Reports (FIRs) filed by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Named along with Sowore in the FIR are: Barrister Aloy Ejimakor (a member of the legal team sacked by Kanu on Thursday), Prince Emmanuel Kanu (said to be Kanu’s relative), Joshua Emmanuel and Bishop Wilson Anyalewechi.

Others are: Barrister Okere Kingdom Nnamdi, Clinton Chimeneze, Gabriel Joshua, Isiaka Husseini, Onyekachi Ferdinand, Amadi Prince, Edison Ojisom, Godwill Obioma and Chima Onuchukwu.

The 13 are charged with criminal conspiracy, disobedience of order promulgated by public officer, inciting disturbance and disturbance of public peace.

The police said the offences are contrary to sections 152, 114 and 113 of the Penal Code Law.

    The FIRs read:

*That on 20 day of October, 2025, you (1). Barrister Aliyu Ejimakor, (2). Prince Emmnauel Kanu, (3). Joshua Emmanuel, (4). Bishop Wilson Anyalewechi, (5). Barrister Okere Kingdom Nnamdi, (6). Clinton Chimeneze, (7). Gabriel Joshua, (8). Isiaka Husseini, (9). Onyekachi Ferdinand. (10). Amadi Prince, (11). Edison Ojisom, and (12). Godwill Obiama, all male adults of FCT Abuja were arrested by a team of security agents in different locations within FCT while involving yourselves in inciting disturbance, and breach of public peace in disobedience to a court order, denying other citizens the freedom of movement, disrupting free flow of traffic while chanting war songs and requesting for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who is undergoing lawful trial at the Federal High Court in a manner that threatens national security.

You thereby committed the above mentioned offences.

*That on 20th day of October, 2025, you Chima Onuchukwu male adult of Ebonyi state, was arrested by a team of police officers at gate 8, Aso Villa, FCT Abuja, while carrying placards written, “Free Nnamdi Kanu” and inciting disturbance, and breach of public peace in disobedience to a court order, and denying others citizens the freedom of movement, disrupting free flow of traffic while chanting war songs and requesting for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who is undergoing lawful trial at the Federal High Court in a manner that threatens national security. You thereby committed the above mentioned offences.

They pleaded not guilty when their alleged offences were read to them during yesterday’s proceedings. Shortly after, their lawyers argued their bails, which the court granted with conditions.

Each of them was granted bail at N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. They were each required to submit their passports, present a verified National Identification Number (NIN) and a three-year tax clearance certificate as part of the conditions.

The court adjourned further hearing till December 15.

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed October 27 for the arraignment of Sowore and two others on a separate charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) in which he is accused of making false claim against President Bola Tinubu by calling him a criminal.

The two other defendants listed in the five-count charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025 are X Incorp (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook) Incorp.

The charge was filed on September 16, few days after an earlier request by the DSS on Facebook and X, the platforms allegedly deployed by Sowore for the said false claim, to pull the misleading message down.

In the charge, Sowore, a serial presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), is accused of contravening the provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act, 2024 and the Criminal Code Act.

Their arraignment was to be held before Justice Mohammed Umar on September 30, but was postponed to October 27 when a defence lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, told the court that his client was not yet served with the charge sheet as required.

Abubakar, who represented Sowore, noted that one of the defendants – X Incorp – was not represented by either a lawyer or an official and claimed that his client was not yet served with the charge.

The defence lawyer contented that in a criminal case, it is mandatory that all the defendants are present in court for a proper arraignment to take place.

At that point, the judge, Justice Umar, looked through the case-file and confirmed that X and Meta were served with the charge electronically, through their email addresses.

On noting that Sowore was yet to be served personally (as required), the prosecuting lawyer sought the court’s permission to serve Sowore (who was in court) during the proceedings, a request the judge granted.

Sowore’s lawyer, however, prayed for an adjournment to allow his client, who was just served the charge, adequate time and opportunity to prepare for his defence as provided under Section 282(6) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.

    Counts in the charge read:

*That you, Omoyele Sowore, adult, male on or about the 25th day of August, 2025 did use your official X handle page, @Yele Sowore, to send out a message/ tweet as : ‘This criminal @officialPBAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. *That you, Omoyele Sowore, adult, male on or about the 25th day of August, 2025 using the instrumentality of X, via your official X account @Yele Sowore, did knowingly published defamatory material on your online platform viz: ‘This criminal @officialPBAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. By David Adenuga (Bauchi) and Daniel Kwabena Mantey (Ghana)

    • Millions of heart-related diseases patients sitting on time bomb, experts warn

Every morning, before the first light of dawn, 65-year-old Malam Idris Bunun Fadan Mai checks his blood pressure. The resident of Misau, the headquarters of Misau Local Government Area in Bauchi State, lives several kilometres away from the nearest hospital. But thanks to the tireless visits of community health volunteers, Malam Idris can now monitor his condition and stay healthy.

“I check myself every morning and take my medicine. If not for these volunteers, it would have been very tough,” he said, his face calm yet marked by years of quiet endurance.

Narrating how he was diagnosed with hypertension and had to be on medications to regulate his blood pressure, he said: “There was a time I hit my head on the door while going to the toilet. Fortunately, I was working with the Ministry of Health then, and the Permanent Secretary asked me to go to the hospital.”

Across West Africa, from Bauchi in northeastern Nigeria to Suhum in Ghanas Eastern Region, men and women like Idris rely on local volunteers for their survival.

These are the Community Health Influencers, Promoters and Services (CHIPs) and grassroots health workers — ordinary citizens filling the gap where health systems fall short.

They bring essential health services straight to people’s homes — from blood pressure checks to health education and treatment referrals. But despite their impact, they work under immense strain, facing little or no government support, misunderstanding from residents, and the daily challenges of unpaid labour.

Battling the silent killer in Bauchi

When 45-year-old Amina Abdullahi began experiencing dizziness and headaches, she assumed it was stress. It was not until some health volunteers visited her home in Misau that she discovered her blood pressure was dangerously high.

“Yes, I used to feel dizzy and had frequent headaches. When they tested me, they confirmed that I had high blood pressure. It has been about a year now, and we are very grateful for their support,” she said.

Amina and Idris are among hundreds in Bauchi whose lives have been transformed by CHIPs volunteers.

Many Nigerians sitting on time bomb — Health experts

Hypertension has become alarmingly prevalent in Bauchi State. In January 2020, Governor Bala Mohammed revealed that about 150 people died in Azare — Katagum Local Government Area — within 30 days, from hypertension and related illnesses.

Worried by the prevalence of hypertension in the country, a Nigerian cardiologist, Dr. Ahmed Abdulrahman Mohammed, revealed that hypertension, caused by persistently high blood pressure, has become the leading cause of death in Africa after road accidents.

Dr. Mohammed, who was the overall best graduate of cardiology in 2012 from the Memorial Saad Medical Centre, University of Cairo, Egypt, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists in Bauchi.

The Bauchi-born medical expert lamented that Nigeria’s health sector continues to suffer setbacks due to poor technological advancement, irregular power supply and inadequate medical equipment in hospitals.

According to him, his decision to specialise in cardiology was driven by the shortage of heart specialists in the country and the frequent death of patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases.

“I chose cardiology because I was disturbed by the number of lives lost daily to heart-related illnesses. Nigeria needs more trained experts in this field,” he said.

Dr. Mohammed stressed that countries that have made significant progress in medicine are those that invested heavily in modern technology.

He therefore urged the Nigerian government and medical institutions to give more priority to the health sector to encourage young people to pursue medical specialties like cardiology.

Similarly, a Consultant Cardiologist at Providence Multi-Specialty Hospital, Abuja described hypertension as a silent killer that often shows no symptoms until it leads to stroke or heart failure.

Many people don’t know they are living with very high blood pressure, said Dr. John Asekhame. If not detected and managed early, it can make someone slump and die suddenly.

The American Heart Association (AHA) also warned that sudden cardiac arrest — one of the complications of untreated hypertension — can occur without prior symptoms and accounts for nearly half of all heart-related deaths.

In a 2016 article titled Heart-stopping conditions could come with warning signs, Prof. Sana Al-Khatib of Duke University Hospital noted that people with risk factors such as diabetes, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease should take any warning signs seriously.

“Even if the symptom seems minor, don’t ignore it. Go to the hospital and ask the right questions,” she advised.

    Volunteer network saving lives

In Bauchi State, volunteers like Comrade Yusuf Aliyu Fada, Chairman of the Ibrahim Ali Pate Usman Foundation, lead local health outreaches, visiting homes and checking people’s blood pressure for free.

“We try our best to check BP for people around the PHC. Even without payment, we still help those in need.

Some call us to their houses; others come to our outreach centres. We just want people to stay alive,” he said.

He recalled a case where his 50-year-old neighbour suffered constant headache.

“When I checked his BP, it was 200/250. I told him to start treatment immediately. Now, he is fine, he said.

“Yet, the work comes with challenges. People think the government pays us, but that is not true. Only one local government gives us a small allowance, he added.

Another volunteer, Abdullahi Muhammad Mubarak, noted that residents often misunderstand their mission. “Some people think were showing off., but we are farmers and small business owners. We just want to help our community,” he said.

    Parallel effort in Ghana

Across the border in Suhum, Ghana, a similar story unfolds. The Youth Aid Initiative (YAI), founded in 2015 by two university graduates, leads volunteer-led campaigns against diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, HIV, and neglected tropical skin infections.

However, the volunteers do not conduct tests on suspected clients themselves. Instead, when they identify a potential case, they promptly notify the disease control officers at the nearest health centre.

The officers then accompany the volunteers to the affected communities to examine the clients and collect samples from those requiring laboratory testing.

Diagnosis is made by the disease control officers based on both laboratory results and physical examinations. Once confirmed, the clients are supported by the volunteers and the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to access treatment at designated health facilities, while follow-up monitoring is jointly carried out by the volunteers and the disease control officers.

“We use local volunteers because they know the people and understand their language,” said founder Bright Owusu.

“That trust helps us to reach communities where hospitals can’t.

“However, sustaining the work is tough. Our volunteers started with so much energy, but now, due to the economy, many struggle to continue,” Bright lamented.

“Still, their dedication keeps us going,” he added.

Like many grassroots health organisations, the Youth Aid Initiative in Ghana has struggled with limited funds, volunteer fatigue, and logistical constraints.

    Government’s response in Bauchi

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Government has expanded its hypertension screening programme from 24 to 132 primary healthcare centres as part of efforts to curb the rising cases of the disease across the state.

Deputy Director of Public Health at the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board, Umar Hassan Waziri, disclosed this in an interview with our reporter, noting that hypertension remains a major health concern not only in Bauchi but across Nigeria.

According to Waziri, the state records a hypertension prevalence rate of about 23 to 24 per cent, prompting the need for an intensified response.

He said the intervention by Population Services International (PSI) through its Healthy Heart Africa programme, launched in January 2023, has been instrumental in improving screening and early detection.

“PSI began screening in 18 states, including Bauchi, selecting six local government areas—Bauchi, Toro, Alkaleri, Ningi, Katagum, and Gamawa. In each LGA, three primary health centres were designated for daily screening, with a general hospital serving as a referral point. That gave us 24 active facilities”, Waziri explained.

He said that before the intervention, the state lacked clear data on hypertension cases.

“With PSIs support, we’ve been able to detect and manage cases that would have otherwise gone unnoticed,” he added.

According to him, between 2023 and now, 1,284,662 people have been screened, out of which 125,162 showed elevated blood pressure while about 54 were confirmed hypertensive.

Waziri said PSI has also donated essential materials such as weighing scales, BP apparatuses, and free drugs to the 24 facilities.

He commended PSI for providing free services, drugs, and capacity-building for health workers, adding that proper training had long been overlooked in managing the condition.

‘With the support of Dr. Rilwanu Muhammad under the PHC Board, we’ve gone this far’, he said.

Waziri revealed that PSIs involvement followed an advocacy visit to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, after which Bauchi leaders approved collaboration due to the silent rise in hypertension cases.

He said the government has now incorporated the programme into its Annual Operational Plan (AOP) to ensure sustainability beyond PSIs presence.

“We are scaling up to 132 PHCs out of the 212 in Bauchi. This step shows the governments commitment to sustain the project by funding it directly”,he said.

    A region’s lifeline

Whether it is volunteers like Yusuf Fada in Misau or Conne David in Suhum, one truth binds them — their unpaid service keeps hundreds alive.

In places where hospitals are miles away and ambulances never come, they have become the first responders, counselors, and sometimes the only hope for patients battling chronic illnesses.

But the question remains how long can goodwill sustain a service the state should guarantee? Until West African governments strengthen rural healthcare systems, these volunteers — unsung and unpaid — will continue walking dusty roads, carrying blood pressure cuffs, and saving lives one household at a time.

“Whether in Misau or Suhum”, Idris said with a faint smile, “they are the reason many of us still wake up to see another day.”

JUST IN: Jonathan has not told me he wants to run in 2027 — Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, said former President Goodluck Jonathan has not informed him of any plan to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Wike stated this during a live media parley monitored by our correspondent, in Abuja while responding to questions about speculations that Jonathan was being pressured to return to the presidential race.

The minister said: “You’re the one telling me here. Jonathan has never told me; he has never called me one day .’Look, I’m being pressured to run, what’s your thinking?’ If he calls me and asks me, I will be able to tell him my mind and what I feel”.

He added: “I will not because you people put something on the pages of the newspapers, just like you said they flew me out of the country — then, I now assume it’s correct.”

“I don’t know about Tanimu Turaki becoming chairman; maybe he becomes chairman for another faction — it’s not the PDP I know,” he stated.

The PDP Northern stakeholders had recently endorsed Turaki as their consensus candidate ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Speaking further, Wike dismissed the upcoming convention as illegal, hinting that he would not attend.

“How do you want me to attend a convention that I know by law that there is no convention?” he queried.
