I’ve not heard Tinubu complain about challenges he inherited, says Mohammed

The United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has said she has not heard President Bola Ahmed Tinubu complain about the challenges he inherited from his predecessor since he assumed office as President.

Mohammed said this at an award dinner at Nigeria House in New York to celebrate Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary and the Independence Day Parade and Carnival.

The UN deputy chief said President Tinubu “fought hard to get to that seat”, even though he said “it was his turn”.

She added: “But he also told us that he wasn’t going to complain about what he got. I have not heard him complain.

“People around him complain about what he inherited, but he doesn’t.”

Mohammed stressed that Tinubu “is the President of Nigeria. It is God that put him on that seat. It is, therefore, incumbent upon us to get behind him and do the best we can for Nigeria, except you’re trying to tell me that God made a mistake”.

The UN deputy secretary-general congratulated Nigeria and Nigerians on the nation’s attainment of its 65th independence anniversary.

She expressed the confidence that the future is bright for the country.

“We are a work in progress, and we are 65 years old as a country.

“However, unless you are part of building a nation, no one else is going to do it for you.

“It doesn’t matter whether you are in the country or outside the country,” Mohammed said.

She called for concerted efforts to build the country and not pull it down, saying: “If we get into the pull-down syndrome, then who else is going to pull us up?

“What else are we telling our children? What else are we telling people that we want as our partners?

“If we are the first people to say that we’re no good, we’re not good enough, and I hope that we just stop doing that.

“This is because Nigerians are the hardest working, most ambitious, and proud people.”

House of Reps Minority Caucus boils over leadership

    • Pro, anti-Kingsley Chinda groups set for showdown
    • Crucial meeting holds today

The simmering crisis within the minority caucus of the House of Representatives has boiled over ahead of tomorrow’s resumption of plenary.

Minority Leader,  Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers), under threat of removal from a section of minority members, obtained an injunction stopping the leadership of the House and the Minority Caucus from removing him.

He is targeted for removal because of his affiliation with Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, it was learnt.

Today, members of the caucus have slated a “crucial meeting” to decide Chinda’s fate.

The meeting, billed for one of the conference rooms in the House of Representatives wing of the National Assembly, is expected to be attended by all caucus members.

The notice of the meeting was signed by leaders of four of the minority parties.

These are: Frederick Agbedi (PDP), Afam Victor Ogene (LP), Muktar Umar-Zakari (NNPP) and Peter Nzokwe (YPP).

But supporters of Chinda are not relenting. They are fighting back under the ‘Active Minority’ group, which claims to have the majority of members.

They have, in fact, prepared for a showdown with the anti-Chinda group.

Defendants in Chinda’s suit are the National Assembly, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Clerk to the House of Representatives, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Labour Party (LP), All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Africa Democratic Congress (ADC)  and Young Progressive Party (YPP).

Justice J.O. Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued an interim injunction asking all parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of the suit.

The notice for the meeting reads: “You are hereby invited to an emergency meeting to discuss recent developments in the minority leadership, particularly to review the lawsuit instituted by Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, against all members of minority parties in the 10th House of Representatives.”

The items on the agenda are to prepare a “response to the lawsuit instituted by Chinda, against all minority parties and any other business (AOB).”

In an order of interim injunction, the court ordered all parties in the suit filed on behalf of Chinda by Dr. J.Y. Musa (SAN) to maintain the status quo, pending the determination of the suit.

Chinda is seeking “an order restraining the defendants, their servants, privies, officers, agents, members, howsoever described, from removing him as Minority Leader of the House of Representatives without compliance with the due process of the law or accepting/recognising any exercise by any person(s) purportedly removing him from his position as the Minority Leader.”

Justice Abdulmalik ruled: “It is my considered firm opinion that in order to ensure all the parties listed in these processes have equal playing ground by virtue of their constitutional rights enshrined in Section 36 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as Amended), as well as the need to protect the res sought in the application, I hereby order as follows: “THAT the applicant shall forthwith serve on all the defendants/respondents the Motion on Notice with Suit No:- FHC/ABJ/CS/1936/2025 filed on 16th September 2025, along with all relevant processes filed in this matter, so as not to foist a fait accompli on the outcome of the reliefs sought in this application, which are also exact same reliefs prayed in the Motion on Notice with Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1936/2025.

“That the hearing of the Motion on Notice with Suit No:- FHC/ABJ/CS/1936/2025 filed on 16th September 2025, shall pursuant to Section 6 (6) (b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) be expediently resolved on its merit by this Honourable Court for the attainment of Justice in this matter.

“THAT all the concerned parties listed in this application shall maintain status quo in respect of the res prayed on the face of the Motion Ex-Parte pending the hearing and determination on its MERIT of the Motion on Notice with Suit No:- FHC/ABJ/CS/1936/2025 filed on 16th September 2025.

“THAT all the Defendants/Respondents SHALL be served with Hearing Notices in respect of this matter.”

    Preparing for a showdown

Pro-Chinda members of the minority caucus under the aegis of ‘Active Minority’ are set for a showdown with their colleagues over the removal plot.

No fewer than 89 members have thrown their weight behind Chinda, vowing to resist any attempt to remove him.

A member of the Active Minority, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they were prepared to counter the moves by certain interests in the PDP and the ADC bent on replacing Chinda because of his affiliation with Wike.

He said: “We have stumbled on a plot by certain leaders in the PDP and ADC to replace Chinda. His only sin is the allegations that he is close to Wike.

“But I can assure you, we are ready for those sponsored to come to the floor and execute this insidious plan.

“Our group, the Active Minority, is prepared to resist this because Chinda has discharged his responsibilities as an opposition leader very well.

“As I speak with you, the Active Minority has a membership strength of 89 members and more members are identifying with us.

“All opposition lawmakers are about 140, and we have an overwhelming majority to counter any undemocratic move.”

When asked to unveil the identities of the Active Minority, the lawmaker said: “We are keeping our identities under wraps until the House resumes. We don’t want to let the cat out of the bag now. Our strategy is also within us until we meet on the battlefield.”

On why they chose to support the minority leader, the lawmaker said: “Chinda’s unwavering commitment to upholding democratic principles and advocating the rights of the Nigerians has set him apart as a beacon of hope in times of uncertainty.

“Chinda has since 2023 vehemently stood against the defection of opposition lawmakers to the APC.

“One of Chinda’s notable contributions lies in his staunch opposition to members of the opposition defecting to the ruling party, citing violations of constitutional provisions and electoral laws.”

  • Nigeria’s oil rigs increase by 762.5 %

    Nigeria’s oil rigs increase by 762.5 %

    • 400 oil fields dormant

Nigeria’s crude oil rigs have risen astronomically from eight to 69 in the past four years.

The 762.5 per cent leap, said Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), indicates renewed investor confidence in the nation’s energy sector.

NUPRC, in a statement highlighting its successes in the last four years, expects the number of rigs to increase in the coming months.

The commission, however, revealed that it identified 400 dormant oil fields during the period.

The statement yesterday by its spokesman, Eniola Akinkuotu, was titled:  ‘’Rising Rig Count: As a testament to the renewed vigour in Nigeria’s upstream oil and gas sector.’’

NUPRC also explained that it approved 79 Field Development Plans (FDPs) between 2024 and 2025, with estimated investments valued at $39.98 billion. This comprises $20.55billion in 2024 and $19.43billion in   2025.”

The commission, which put current crude oil production at 1.65mbpd, projected the figure to   2.5 Mbpd in 2027.

It added that crude oil theft has dropped by 90 per cent with the combined efforts of  ‘’General Security Forces and a private security contractor, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited.

The statement partly reads: “The latest rig count of 69 which comprises 40 active rigs, eight  on standby, five  on warm stack, four  on cold stack and 12 on the move, represents a 762.5 per cent increase in barely four years.’’

On dormant oil fields, the commission said:  “We  successfully identified 400 dormant oil fields and have also propelled complacent oil companies to take quick action.”

NUPRC explained that its successes in the past four years align with the charge of President Tinubu that Nigeria is ready for business and that the right investment climate prevails now in the Nigerian upstream sector.

NUPRC   listed 16 high-impact post-Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) successes, saying they were attained despite challenges it inherited from the pre-Petroleum Industry Act era.

One of the achievements was surpassing the revenue targets.

The commission said that in  2022, 2023 and 2024, it surpassed its revenue target by 18.3 per cent, 14.65 per cent and 84.2 per cent, respectively.

On transparent bid rounds, NUPRC recalled that before its establishment,  licensing rounds were clouded by political influence.

NUPRC said in line with the PIA and with the support of President Tinubu, it began implementation of the ‘Drill or Drop’ policy which prescribes that unexplored acreages are to be relinquished.

The commission added: “  We approved divestments running into billions of dollars in 2024. From the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) to Oando Energy Resources; Equinor to Chappal Energies; Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited to Seplat Energies; and Shell Development Company Nigeria Limited to Renaissance Africa Energy.

“The divestment is about investor portfolio re-ordering to focus on deep-offshore development.’’

To give meaning to the intent of the PIA,  the commission, in consultation with stakeholders, developed 24 forward-thinking Regulations out of which    19 have been gazetted.

On gas flare commercialisation, NUPRC said it has completed awards of flare sites to successful bidders under the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP).

The programme is aimed at eliminating gas flaring and attracting at least $2.5 billion in investments.

It also said that Host Community Development Trusts have remitted N122.34billion and over $168.91 million as of the first week of this month to oil host communities.

NUPRC added that it was currently overseeing at least 536 projects, including schools, health centres, roads and vocational centres in the oil host communities.

The projects, according to the commission, are being funded by the trust fund.

  • Tinubu, PDP hail Okpebholo’s road infrastructural revolution

Tinubu, PDP hail Okpebholo’s road infrastructural revolution

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded the infrastructural strides of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, particularly the ongoing building of the state’s first-ever flyover.

He described it as a landmark intervention in easing urban traffic and modernising Edo’s transport system.

The President extolled the governor’s foresight in embarking on the one-kilometre flyover project at Ikpoba Hill in Ikpoba Okha Local Government, noting that its completion would transform vehicular movement and strengthen the urban fabric of Benin City.

Tinubu praised Okpebholo’s early performance in office, affirming that the governor had set a new standard of governance in Edo.

The President, represented by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, said the governor’s bold approach to road and bridge construction in the state underscored the All Progressives Congress’ (APC’s) progressive agenda.

“This is a 24-span structure, each span measuring 20 metres, amounting to a one-kilometre bridge. The quality and pace of work are impressive. Edo is witnessing a first, and I believe more of such projects should follow in Benin City to address the heavy traffic,” Umahi said on behalf of the President.

He contrasted the efficiency of state-driven projects with some federal contracts, lamenting that contractors often displayed greater discipline when working under governors than when handling federal assignments.

He pledged to enforce stricter accountability standards at the federal level, to ensure value for money and timely delivery.

“I commend Governor Okpebholo for insisting on concrete technology. Roads built with reinforced concrete last 50 to 100 years, saving scarce resources. Nigeria cannot continue to spend on recurring reconstruction. We must invest in durability,” Umahi stressed.

Describing Okpebholo as “a man of courage, destiny and vision,” the President lauded the governor’s interventions on federal road corridors in the state.

He said such leadership reflected not only political will, but also a deep commitment to the welfare of the people.

Governor Okpebholo, visibly elated, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support to Edo State, crediting the President’s encouragement as a key factor behind his administration’s early successes.

“We are succeeding because of the President’s backing. His DNA of progressive leadership flows in us. I cannot sleep without thinking of what to do for my people. We will continue to embark on projects that directly improve the lives of Edo people,” the governor said.

He admitted that Edo’s infrastructure had suffered years of neglect, with many roads washed away and institutions weakened. He, however, pledged to rebuild with renewed zeal, assembling teams with the knowledge and dedication to restore Edo’s pride.

In a rare bipartisan endorsement, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Segun Sowunmi, also commended the governor’s performance, noting that transformative governance transcended party lines.

“When Edo people are happy, Nigerians are happy. Development must proceed state by state to truly reform the country,” he said.

  • NDLEA smashes cocaine cartels behind six UK-bound shipments, arrests arrowhead, five others

NDLEA smashes cocaine cartels behind six UK-bound shipments, arrests arrowhead, five others

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully dismantled two major drug cartels behind six different consignments of cocaine in a series of intelligence-led operations that lasted over three weeks across Lagos.

The drugs were concealed in walls of stainless cups, body cream and hair gel containers, leading to the arrest of five suspects and ultimately the arrowhead of the syndicate, Alhaji Hammed Taofeek Ode, who parades as a businessman and real estate developer.

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Femi Babafemi, made this known in a statement on Sunday.

According to the statement, the beginning of the end of the criminal syndicate’s operations began on 16th September 2025, when NDLEA operatives at the export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, intercepted 174 parcels of cocaine weighing 13.40 kilograms. They were concealed in the walls of cocoa butter body cream containers. A cargo agent was promptly arrested.

The statement reads, “Further investigations revealed Alhaji Hammed Taofeek Ode as the mastermind of the shipment, and after weeks of intelligence, it was established that the drug baron had reported a dispute at the Zone 2 headquarters of the Police in Lagos, after which the Agency sought the cooperation of the police to get the suspect into custody.

“During his preliminary interview, Alhaji Hammed Ode admitted ownership of the consignment, which he claimed he bought at over N150 million. He claimed to be a businessman and estate developer following his return from the United Kingdom in 2024. He had lived for over 27 years in many European countries, including Austria, the Netherlands, France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, before settling in the UK.

“In like manner, five other desperate attempts by another criminal syndicate to export cocaine consignments to the United Kingdom were also thwarted by operatives of the MMIA Strategic Command of NDLEA. The unravelling of the gang started on 26th September, following the seizure of 2.10kg cocaine concealed in the walls of hair cream containers at the export shed of the Lagos airport.”

According to the statement, the apprehension of a cargo agent led to the arrest of the consignor, Smith David Korede, a furniture maker, on Tuesday, 30th September, at his 3 Arowojobe Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos base, where another consignment of 1.40kg cocaine meant for export to the UK was recovered from him.

It reads, “Same day, another consignment of 1.00kg cocaine with a similar mode of concealment going to the UK was also intercepted at the export shed of the airport. The cargo agent arrested in connection with the 1.00kg cocaine also identified Smith David Korede as the consignor, bringing to three the number of seized cocaine consignments linked to the suspect.

“Two other cocaine laden consignments going to the UK were also intercepted by NDLEA operatives at the export shed of the MMIA on Thursday, 2nd October. Two suspects, Ogunbiyi Oluseye Taiwo and Popoola Francis Olumuyiwa, linked to the seizures, were promptly arrested. One of the consignments contains crayfish, and 12 pieces of stainless cups used to conceal 1.00kg of cocaine, while the second consignment also contains crayfish, and 36 containers of hair cream used to conceal 1.60kg of cocaine.”

Babafemi said the bid by another criminal gang to smuggle into Lagos 6.3 kilograms of Loud, a strong strain of cannabis concealed in a bed sheet and hibiscus flower from Thailand, was equally thwarted by NDLEA operatives attached to some courier companies.

He added that while a joint operation between NDLEA officers and Customs Service personnel at a checkpoint along Danbatta-Daura road, Kano, on Thursday, 2nd October, led to the arrest of 38-year-old Sa’adu Ali and seizure of 290,450 pills of tramadol 250mg and pregabalin capsules.

The statement reads, “In Lagos, a notorious drug dealer, John Igbe, operating under the nickname: SammyBless, to distribute illicit drugs in Lekki and Ajah axis, was on Tuesday, 30th September, arrested at Admiralty road, Lekki. At the time of his arrest, 550 grams of Colorado, a synthetic strain of cannabis, packaged in retail plastic cups, were recovered from him.

“Three other suspects: Idris Lukman, Fuad Abdulsalam, and Mobolaji James were nabbed the same day in the Mushin area of the state, with 109kg skunk, 20 bottles of codeine syrup, and 2kg of nitrous oxide seized from them. At the Trade Fair Complex, Alaba area of the state, 3,700 bottles of codeine syrup and 550,000 caplets of expired 225mg diclofenac were recovered.

“While a total of 27,700 pills of tramadol 100mg/225mg were seized from a suspect, Salisu Abubakar, 25, at Bode Saadu, Morro LGA, Kwara state, on Monday, 29th September, Blessing Ovaka, 50, was caught with 498.5kg skunk at Kudandan, Chukun LGA, Kaduna, same day, just as Dahiru Salisu, 27, was arrested in possession of 34,180 capsules of tramadol at Gwargwaje along Kaduna – Zaria road on Thursday, 2nd October.

“In Ogun state, NDLEA operatives on Monday, 29th September, raided Isheri, Obafemi Owode LGA, where a suspect, Abubakar Audu, was arrested with 112kg skunk and 16grams of tramadol. Three suspects: Chuimieze Shedrack, 28; Sunday John, 25, and Solomon Okopko, 27, were nabbed by NDLEA officers on Thursday, 2nd October at Owena/Ijesha forest reserve, Osun state, where they destroyed 14,000kg skunk on 5.6 hectares of cannabis plantation and recovered 142kg of the same psychoactive substance.

“In Edo, NDLEA operatives on Wednesday, 1st October, intercepted a Toyota Sienna vehicle marked KUJ 47 NW loaded with 22 bags of skunk weighing 244.5kg at Igbanke, Orhionwon LGA, and a suspect, Ineh Excellent Obindi, 28, was arrested. A total of 10,897.35kg skunk was destroyed on four farms measuring 4.358938 hectares at Ugbodo forest, Ovia North East LGA, on Friday, 3rd October, with two suspects: Michael Ayang, 40, and Bernard New Year (a.k.a Don), 47, arrested. Not less than 223.5kg of processed cannabis and seeds were recovered from the farms.

“Operatives on patrol along the Okene/Lokoja highway intercepted a waybill parcel coming from Lagos to Abuja containing 3.272kg Loud and a sachet of Colorado. A follow-up operation at Gwagwalada park in Abuja led to the arrest of the owner, Tobi Odubote, 34, while another suspect, Ismail Abdurrahim, 32, was arrested in possession of 25.5kg skunk along Abaji- Abuja expressway on Thursday, 2nd October.

“In like manner, Commands and formations of the Agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities to schools, worship centres, workplaces, and communities, among others, in the past week. These include: WADA sensitization lecture to students and staff of Government Day Secondary School, Hammawa Toungo, Adamawa; Government Day Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina; Day Secondary School, Unguwan Nasarawa, Kontogora, Niger; and traders at Ladega market, Ikorodu, Lagos, while the Imo state command of NDLEA paid a WADA advocacy visit to the State First Lady, Barr. Chioma Uzodinma at Government House, Owerri, among others.”

“We’ll continue to target and dismantle every identified drug cartel at every level of their operations, from the mules to the dealers in between and up to their leadership.

“These successful operations should serve as a warning that NDLEA will not relent until the threat posed by the menace of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking is eliminated because every arrest, seizure and assets forfeited by the criminal syndicates signifies innocent lives saved and communities protected either here in Nigeria or in other jurisdictions”, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) stated.

He commended the officers and men of MMIA, DOGI, Kano, Edo, Kwara, Kaduna, Ogun, Osun, Kogi, and FCT Commands, as well as their compatriots across the country, for their tenacity, professionalism, and balanced approach to the drug control efforts of the Agency.

    • Vows to unite country under shared vision of peace, prosperity
    • Says administration prevailing in war against insecurity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,  yesterday, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fairness among Nigeria’s diverse religious communities, pledging to unite the country under a shared vision of peace and prosperity.

Speaking at the headquarters of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Jos, Plateau State, President Tinubu told Christian leaders from Northern Nigeria that his government is dedicated to ensuring justice and inclusivity for all citizens regardless of faith.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President said: “I have a mission to unite this country, ensure its prosperity, and we are making progress.”

He urged clerics to have faith in his leadership, adding that religious harmony remains essential to national stability.

“As leaders, we have the responsibility to manage religious issues for the benefit of all,” he added.

President Tinubu also assured the gathering that his administration is determined to end insecurity and criminality.

“We are defeating bandits, and we will defeat them. We will deal with them and combat the farmers-herders clashes,” he declared, noting that ongoing economic reforms are being executed to benefit every Nigerian.

The President was in Jos to attend the funeral prayers for Nana Lydia Yilwatda, mother of the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who died at the age of 83.

Paying tribute to the late matriarch, Tinubu described her as “a devoted mother and humanitarian.”

“In our family, we have a strong Muslim background, and I married a Christian, a pastor for that matter, and I have never forced her to change her religion,” the President said, stressing his belief in mutual respect and coexistence.

He recalled his political journey through Jos during the Social Democratic Party (SDP) era and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return as President to honour the late Mrs. Yilwatda.

He made the assertion while fielding questions from journalists amidst cheering crowds at the Secretariat Junction flyover.

“We are indeed thrilled by the peaceful and orderly conduct exhibited by the people of Plateau State, members, and APC supporters during the funeral visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We are also grateful to Mr. President for deeming it important to accord our mother a befitting state burial in recognition of her contributions to nationhood,” Baba Hassan said.

“Right on arrival at the airport, coming through the major ways to the church, we noticed that our President was happy, and on behalf of the mobilisation committee that I chaired, we are happy,” he said.

He further assured that Plateau State will reciprocate President Tinubu’s gesture in the 2027 general elections.

  • I never said Buhari, Boko Haram were connected —Jonathan

I never said Buhari, Boko Haram were connected —Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has refuted reports quoting him as saying that the late former President Muhammadu Buhari was once nominated by the Boko Haram terrorist group to represent them in a dialogue with the federal government.

Jonathan, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Media and Public Affairs), Ikechukwu Eze, said his comments at the public presentation of Scars, a book authored by former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, in Abuja on Friday, were “grossly misrepresented”.

The statement said: “The attention of the Office of Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been drawn to misleading reports circulating in sections of the media suggesting that Dr. Jonathan alleged that Boko Haram nominated the late President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to represent them in dialogue with the Federal Government, and therefore this made him somehow complicit in the Boko Haram crisis.

“We wish to make it abundantly clear that the former President’s comments were grossly misrepresented. At no time did Dr. Jonathan suggest, imply, or insinuate that President Buhari had any connection with Boko Haram or that he supported the group in any form.

“Dr. Jonathan’s remarks, made in the course of a broader discussion on Nigeria’s security challenges, were meant to illustrate the deviousness and manipulative strategies employed by Boko Haram in their early years.

“His reference was to a well-documented episode when various individuals and factions falsely claimed to represent the terrorist group and purported to name prominent Nigerians as possible mediators: without those individuals’ knowledge or consent.

Read Also: We’ve not been served court order on tinted glass permit – Police

“The point Dr. Jonathan sought to make was that Boko Haram, in its characteristic deceit, often invoked the names of respected public figures to sow confusion, exploit political divisions, and undermine public confidence in government.

“His comments were therefore an illustration of the group’s duplicity, not an accusation against the late former president or any individual for that matter.

“The former president’s position was that if indeed Buhari was their choice negotiator, why didn’t Boko Haram expeditiously bring their evil terrorist agenda to an end when the retired General became president?

“For the avoidance of doubt, Dr. Jonathan recognises that President Muhammadu Buhari, like every patriotic Nigerian, stood firmly against terrorism and was himself a target of Boko Haram violence.

“Both men, during their respective tenures, shared a common commitment to restoring peace and stability to Nigeria.

“The Office of the Former President therefore urges the public to disregard any misinterpretation of his remarks.

“Dr. Jonathan remains committed to peace, unity, and the strengthening of democratic values in Nigeria.

“He believes that the nation’s progress depends on a truthful understanding of its challenges, not on the distortion of facts for political or sensational purposes.”

Jonathan had said at the book launch: “One of the committees we set up then, the Boko Haram nominated Buhari to lead their team to negotiate with the government.

“So, I was feeling that oh, if they nominated Buhari to represent them and have a discussion with the government committee, then when Buhari took over, it could have been an easy way to negotiate with them and they would have handed over their guns.

“But it (the problem) is still there till today.”
